Some buildings can leave you wondering how on earth they were built. Read on for examples of creative buildings in the world.
Wonder Works, Tennessee
INSPIRATION: What if a laboratory was thrown into the air in an experiment and landed upside down?
Looking at the cracks, you might think “Is it about to collapse?” But it’s all an illusion (错觉). This indoor amusement park is actually pretty normal. The upside-down features are just for show. Inside are more than 100 hands-on activities.
Cube Houses, Netherlands
INSPIRATION: Trees in a forest, with each block being a tree.
The Cube Houses are a popular attraction, but they are also real houses so that tourists can accommodate here! The blocks have concrete foundations and floors with a wood living space on top. Shiny metal panels add visual appeal. The furniture is tailor-made to fit the odd angles where the walls meet.
Bubble Palace, France
INSPIRATION: “Habitology”, an idea that habitats could use nature’ s flexible lines instead of straight lines and sharp angles.
This house may look like a space settlement, but it’s a 10-bedroom palace where travelers can stay shortly. Made of cave-like bubbles, it also has ponds, waterfalls, swimming pools, an outdoor theater that seats 500 people, and views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Krzyw y Domek, Poland
INSPIRATION: Fairy-tale illustrations.
With its curved walls and colored glass, its outside might make you dizzy! Inside, though, is a typical mall and office building where people can shop, eat and get their hair cut. A favorite feature is the Wall of Fame, with signatures from Polish celebrities. It’s modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
1. What is special about Wonder Works?
A. It is designed to look like a real laboratory. B. It is an amusement park built in a laboratory.
C. It gives people an illusion of its appearance. D. It has over 100 different types of buildings inside.
2. What do Cube House and Bubble Palace have in common?
A. Visitors are provided accommodation. B. Visitors can enjoy picturesque sea views.
C. Visitors can experience hands-on activities. D. Visitors can take advantage of customized furniture.
3. In which column can you read this article?
A. Architecture. B. Travel. C. History. D. Entertainment.

I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
Then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. It became clear to me that performing was what I wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by playing the role of the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status, and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
4. How did the author feel in the early years of school?
A. Impatient. B. Uneasy. C. Relieved. D. Relaxed.
5. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR?
A. He risked his neck doing it. B. He took to it like a duck to water.
C. He thought of it as stressful. D. He did it against his will.
6. Why does the author like performing on stages?
A. It makes him forget his troubles. B. It allows him to show his skills.
C. It gives him a sense of belonging. D. It helps him make more friends.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My Life in the Big Apple Circus B. The Influence of Circus on My Job
C. Stages: Where I Find My Freedom D. Circus: A Home Forever in My Heart
B 5. B 6. C 7. D

Scientists in Australia thought they had developed a new tracker that cost dear and would not cause flying problems to help them monitor magpies (喜鹊), who are known to be quite clever and live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in, but these birds had other ideas.
The team equipped five magpies with small backpack-like harnesses attached to the trackers, each of which weighed less than one gram. Once the trackers were on, scientists could guide the birds that previously received their instructions back to an outdoor ground “feeding station” where the trackers could charge wirelessly, and the team could download the data.
Scientists planned the pilot experiment to learn more about how far the highly intelligent creatures travel and if they have any patterns or schedules of travelling. The scientists are concerned that magpies may have a hard time adjusting as the world warms up because of climate change.
However, within ten minutes of placing the tracker on the fifth experiment, one clever female magpie without a tracker began picking at the harness of another younger bird. Finally, the female bird succeeded, and the behavior was repeated in the following hours. By day three of the experiment, none of the birds had trackers anymore. “The birds beat us, ” said Dominique Potvin, one of the scientists.
The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but they realized that the magpies had taught them an unexpected lesson that magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird that is helping doesn’t get a reward. This is called “rescue behavior”, which is not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. The scientists think this is the first-time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies.
The scientists are glad they’ve learned about the fact. But now they need to try again to figure out a good way to track these clever birds to get what they really want.
8. What did scientists do to the magpies before the experiment?
A. They trained them. B. They weighed them.
C. They grouped them. D. They named them.
9. What was the original purpose of the experiment?
A. To explain magpies’ teamwork. B. To track magpies’ movement behavior.
C. To test the trackers’ effects on magpies. D. To make magpies adapt to climate change.
10. Which of the following best describes a magpie with “rescue behavior”?
A. Polite. B. Aggressive. C. Honest. D. Selfless.
11. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. New tracking devices disappoint scientists. B. Magpies prove to be cleverer than scientists.
C. Magpies teach scientists an unexpected lesson. D. Science experiments don’t always go as planned.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第二段中“Once the trackers were on, scientists could guide the birds that previously received their instructions back to an outdoor ground “feeding station” where the trackers could charge wirelessly, and the team could download the data. (一旦追踪器打开,科学家们就可以将之前收到指令的鸟类引导回室外地面“喂食站”,在那里追踪器可以无线充电,团队可以下载数据。)”可知,科学家们在实验之前对喜鹊进行了训练。故选A。
根据第三段“Scientists planned the pilot experiment to learn more about how far the highly intelligent creatures travel and if they have any patterns or schedules of travelling. (科学家们计划进行这项试点实验,以进一步了解这些高智商生物的旅行距离,以及它们是否有任何旅行模式或时间表。)”可知,科学家进行这个研究是为了了解喜鹊的运动习性。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but they realized that the magpies had taught them an unexpected lesson that magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird that is helping doesn’t get a reward. (研究小组没有得到他们想要的数据,但他们意识到喜鹊给他们上了一个意想不到的课,那就是喜鹊能够也愿意互相帮助,即使帮助的鸟没有得到奖励。)”可知,没有得到奖励也会进行救援,说明喜鹊的“救援行为”是无私的。故选D。
11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but they realized that the magpies had taught them an unexpected lesson that magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird that is helping doesn’t get a reward. This is called “rescue behavior”, which is not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. Researchers at the University of Sussex have used AI to look at online records from Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Bing to see how much hunting and trading of bats is happening around the world. They want to use this information to help protect bats better.
The team developed an automated system which allowed them to conduct large scale searches across multiple platforms. With the help of AI, they sorted through many results to find important details. Any stories or examples of people using bats were used to create a big list of “bat use records. ”
To better understand threats to bats, the team compared online records with academic records, knowing that data and information shared online is influenced by factors including global events and where people have access to the Internet.
Lead author, Bronwen Hunter at the University of Sussex says: “Using data sources like this provides a low-cost way to help us understand threats to wildlife globally. AI allowed us to access the data and complete a global analysis, which isn’t something we would have been able to achieve using traditional field studies. ”
“Another benefit of using online data combined with automated data filtering is that more information can be got in real-time, ensuring that we can keep up to date with current threats. ”
Bats are about one-fifth of all mammal species in the world and play a very important role in nature. They help plants grow by spreading seeds, and they also eat pests. More than half of bat species are thought to be in danger of extinction or we don’t have enough information about them, according to the International Union for Nature Conservation(IUCN). We know less about how hunting and trading affect bats compared to other animals. However, their low reproductive rates and relatively short lifespans keep them at a risk of survival crisis to a degree more commonly seen in much larger mammals such as chimpanzees, bears, or lions.
Using information from the Internet to learn more about how bats are being used can help us find out which bat populations need the most help. This information can also be used to update global assessments, like the IUCN Red List.
12. How did the team use AI to gather relevant data for their study?
A. By conducting interviews with experts in the field.
B. By manually searching through social media posts.
C. By sorting through results across different platforms.
D. By using research data only from academic records.
13. Which is the advantage of using online data according to Bronwen Hunter?
A. It reduces the cost of conducting wildlife studies. B. It allows for real-time updates on wildlife threats.
C. It enables the data collection from remote areas. D. It increases the accuracy of the field studies.
14. Why might bats be easily endangered by threats?
A. They are easily hunted for economic value. B. They are more affected by natural disasters.
C. They have a lower birth rate and lifespan. D. They depend on some specific habitats.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Bats lives are in greater danger. B. Bats hunting should be banned.
C. AI provides help to wildlife protection. D. AI helps identify global threats to bats.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段“The team developed an automated system which allowed them to conduct large scale searches across multiple platforms. With the help of AI, they sorted through many results to find important details. Any stories or examples of people using bats were used to create a big list of “bat use records. (该团队开发了一个自动化系统,使他们能够在多个平台上进行大规模搜索。在人工智能的帮助下,他们对许多结果进行了分类,以找到重要的细节。人们使用蝙蝠的任何故事或例子都被用来创建一个“蝙蝠使用记录”的大列表。)”可知,团队利用 AI 在不同平台筛选结果来收集相关数据。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Another benefit of using online data combined with automated data filtering is that more information can be got in real-time, ensuring that we can keep up to date with current threats. (使用在线数据与自动数据过滤相结合的另一个好处是,可以实时获得更多信息,确保我们能够及时了解当前的威胁。)”可知,使用在线数据的一个好处是可以实时获取信息,及时了解当前威胁。故选B。
14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“However, their low reproductive rates and relatively short lifespans keep them at a risk of survival crisis to a degree more commonly seen in much larger mammals such as chimpanzees, bears, or lions. (然而,它们的低繁殖率和相对较短的寿命使它们面临生存危机的风险,这种风险在黑猩猩、熊或狮子等大型哺乳动物中更为常见。)”可知,蝙蝠繁殖率低、寿命长的特点使它们更容易受到威胁。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Researchers at the University of Sussex have used AI to look at online records from Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Bing to see how much hunting and trading of bats is happening around the world.

How To Deal With A Bully
Bullying is when someone misuses his authority( 权威) or power inside a relationship.____16____This behavior can cause physical and emotional harm on others and often leaves the victim feeling helpless.
It is never easy to deal with all the unwanted bullying even when you have done nothing wrong.____17____Here are some helpful ways to deal with a bully when you get bullied.
Ask Them To Stop
____18____Sometimes when we do not speak up for ourselves, the bullies continue with their behavior thinking of us as easy targets. Telling them to stop in a firm and confident voice can make them reconsider their actions. This will work only if they have not yet established a pattern of bullying you. It is important to keep in mind that you are trying to de-escalate(弱化) the situation.
____19____
Bullies usually hunt for people who are alone or have isolated themselves from their surroundings. If you are with your friends, or if you are in the company of someone, it is least likely that the bully will disturb you. We are not asking you to make a huge circle of friends, but sometimes all it takes is one loyal friend who will stay by you no matter what.
Ignore Them
Another effective measure to ignore a bully is by ignoring them. They think of it as a game, and when they get an emotional response from you, it satisfies their ego. ____20____So if they get nothing, they will stop bothering you because they will know you are not an easy one to attack.
A. Be Accompanied
B. Make More Friends
C. Asking the bully to stop is sometimes an effective measure to deal with them.
D. It can be outside of a relationship too as this behavior knows no bounds.
E. Such bullies will go around spreading rumors and false news.
F. However, doing nothing in return will only result in more intense bullying.
G. When you do not react to what they say or do no matter how hurtful it may be for you, they start to lose interest in you.
D 17. F 18. C 19. A 20. G

根据空前内容“It is never easy to deal with all the unwanted bullying even when you have done nothing wrong(即使你没有做错任何事,也不容易处理所有不必要的欺凌。)” 而空后内容“Here are some helpful ways to deal with a bully when you get bullied.(当你被欺负时,这里有一些有用的方法来对付欺负你的人。)” F“However, doing nothing in return will only result in more intense bullying.(然而,不做任何回应只会遭来更强烈的欺凌。)”
根据空后内容“Sometimes when we do not speak up for ourselves, the bullies continue with their behavior thinking of us as easy targets. Telling them to stop in a firm and confident voice can make them reconsider their actions.(有时候,当我们不为自己说话时,恶霸继续他们的行为,认为我们是容易攻击的目标。用坚定而自信的声音告诉他们停下来,可以让他们重新考虑自己的行为。)”可推断,空处指的是遭受欺凌时,要让对方停下来。选项C“Asking the bully to stop is sometimes an effective measure to deal with them(要求霸凌者停下来有时是对付他们的有效措施。)”

We are not asking you to make a huge circle of friends, but sometimes all it takes is one loyal friend who will stay by you no matter what.(霸凌者通常会寻找那些孤独或与周围环境隔绝的人。 选项A“Be Accompanied(有人陪伴)”与下文内容一致。故选A。
根据空前内容“Another effective measure to ignore a bully is by ignoring them. They think of it as a game, and when they get an emotional response from you, it satisfies their ego.(另一种无视欺凌者的有效措施是无视他们。他们认为这是一场游戏,当他们从你那里得到情感回应时,这就满足了他们的自我。)”可知,作者认为如果霸凌者从你那儿得到情感回应,就会满足他们的自我,会继续欺凌你。而空后内容“So if they get nothing, they will stop bothering you because they will know you are not an easy one to attack.(所以如果他们一无所获,他们就会停止打扰你,因为他们知道你不是一个容易攻击的人。)” G“When you do not react to what they say or do no matter how hurtful it may be for you, they start to lose interest in you.(不管他们的言行对你有多伤人,当你对他们的言行没有反应时,他们就会开始对你失去兴趣。)”

My parents ran a small grocery store near my house in San Francisco. They always kept a big box by the entrance where people could donate cans of soup and stuff to our local food bank.
“For some reason, our food-donation box just isn’t filling up lately, ”said my dad. “Maybe it’s time to think of a way to remind folks about the food bank, ” replied my mom. We talked about having fireworks, but Mom smilingly said it was a little outside our budget. Dad suggested a talent show because it was fun and people could pay for tickets with food donations. We all gladly agreed.
Word for the talent show got out. While my parents posted information online about the event, we kids made some signs. My friend Mareya came over to help out. “I’d like to do an act in the show, but I don’t know what to do, ” I told Mareya. “Well, since the food-bank thing is about sharing, ” said Mareya, “Why not write a song about that? ” I told Mareya that writing a song was not a problem. But I’d be too nervous to sing it. Plus, I didn’t think I was good enough! She shrugged. “What if we sang it together? ”
Since Mareya had the world’s prettiest voice and also happened to play the guitar, I agreed. The act would be a huge success. You wouldn’t believe how many people came by the store over the next week to sign up to perform: dancers, Hula-Hoopers, banjo players, comedians, poets, and a boy who did tricks with his adorable poodles Salt and Pepper!
Mareya and I practiced and practiced, and I was feeling pretty good about our act. But on the morning of the performance, Mareya called with bad news. She had a serious stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

Para 1: “There’s no way I’m going on without you,” I told her. But Mareya insisted that I should perform alone. “You’ve practiced so hard, and the song is beautiful. The audience will love it,” she encouraged me. Though my heart was pounding, I decided to give it a try. As I stepped onto the stage, the spotlight felt blinding, and my hands trembled. I took a deep breath and began to sing. To my surprise, the audience started clapping along, and their smiles gave me the courage to continue. By the end of the song, the room erupted in applause. I couldn’t believe I had done it!
Para 2: Once I was off the stage, ashamed, my mom wrapped me in a big hug. “You were amazing!” she said, her eyes shining with pride. I told her how nervous I had been and how I almost didn’t go through with it. “But you did, and that’s what matters,” she replied. Just then, Mareya called again. She had been listening to the performance over the phone and was thrilled. “I knew you could do it!” she exclaimed. The event was a huge success, and the donation box was overflowing with cans of soup and other items. I realized that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to something truly special.

4 How did the author feel in the early years of school?
A. Impatient. B. Uneasy. C. Relieved. D. Relaxed.
