Ⅰ. 1.In the doorway of a store stood a man, with an unlit cigar in his mouth.(P2,Line 3) 结构分析:本句是简单句。主语是a man,表示地点的介词短语放在句首,引起句子的完全倒装;with an unlit cigar in his mouth是with的复合结构作状语。 2.There used to be a restaurant where this store stands(stand)—“Big Joe” Brady’s restaurant.(P2,Lines 7-8) 结构分析:本句是复合句,句中where引导地点状语从句。 3.Well,we agreed that night that we would meet(meet) here again exactly twenty years from that date and time,no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come.(P2,Lines 16-18) 4.But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he’s alive, for he always was the truest and most reliable(reliable) fellow in the world.(P2,Lines 22-24) 结构分析:本句是由for连接的并列复合句。 5.The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, set with small diamonds.(P3,Line 26) 结构分析:本句是简单句。waiting作前置定语,修饰man;set with small diamonds为过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰watch。 6.Chicago police thought you might have dropped over our way and wired us.(P3,Lines 52-53) thought后是省略that的宾语从句;might have dropped over表示对过去事实的推测。 7.When you struck the match to light(light) your cigar I saw it was the face of the criminal wanted in Chicago.(P3,Lines 56-57) when引导时间状语从句;I saw后为省略that的宾语从句;wanted in Chicago为过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰criminal。 Ⅱ.研典句 学用法 形容词/副词+enough+to do sth Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change the shape of a man’s nose.(P3,Lines 48-49) 二十年确实很长,但还没长到可以改变一个人鼻子的形状。 结构分析:此句是简单句,句中含有“形容词+enough+to do sth”结构,to do在句中作结果状语。 ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— •形容词/副词+enough+to do sth意为“足够……可以做……”,该结构可与so/such...that... ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— (1)Would you be kind enough to take(take) my bag upstairs for me? (2)The boy is not old enough to understand(understand) these complicated principles. [写作佳句] (3)(话题写作之人物介绍)Our English teacher is so generous and responsible that he offers us top tips on how to improve our English. →Our English teacher is generous and responsible enough to offer us top tips on how to improve our English.(用 “形容词+enough+to do”改写) 课文重点词块默写 1.值勤的/巡逻的警察the policeman on the beat 2. 二十年前定下的一个约定 an appointment made twenty years ago 4.曾经有 there used to be 5. 发财make one’s fortune 8.保持联系 keep in touch 9. 赴约,践约keep an appointment 12.衣领竖到耳朵上 with collar turned up to one’s ears 13.臂挽着臂arm in arm 14.概述……的历史outline the history of 15. 负责;控制,掌管take charge of 17.被逮捕under arrest 18.与某人聊天 have a chat with sb 19.在约定的地点 at the appointed place 20.按时,准时on time 21.让某人做某事 get sb to do sth 训练2 Welcome to the unit & Reading [分值:50分] Ⅰ. (worthwhile) It is worthwhile getting/to get along with Tom because he is a reliable man. 2. (resign) Since he went to school,he has never been resigning himself to difficulties. 3. (adj.+enough+to do) He is decent and ready enough to help those in trouble out of difficulty. 4. He always keeps an appointment and this is why he is highly thought of by those around him. 5. Such is Tom,a person well worth respecting. It is worthwhile getting/to get along with Tom because he is a reliable man.Since he went to school,he has never been resigning himself to difficulties. Not only is he decent and ready enough to help those in trouble out of difficulty, but he also always keeps an appointment, making him highly thought of by those around him.Such is Tom,a person well worth respecting. Ⅱ.阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共20分) A Communications technologies are far from equal when it comes to conveying the truth. The first study to compare honesty across a range of communications media has discovered that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in emails. The fact that emails are automatically recorded—and can come back to haunt(困扰) you—appears to be the key to the finding. Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca New York asked 30 students to keep a communications diary for a week.In it they noted the number of conversations or email exchanges they had lasting over 10 minutes and how many lies they told.Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14 percent of emails,21 percent of instant messages,27 percent of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37 percent of phone calls. His results have surprised psychologists. Some expected emailers to be the biggest liars reasoning that because lying makes people uncomfortable, touchless emailing would make it easier to lie.Others expected people to lie more in face-to-face exchanges because we are most practiced at that form of communication. But Hancock says it is also crucial whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread and whether it occurs in real time.People appear to be afraid to lie when they know the communication could later be used to hold them to account,he says. This is why fewer lies appear in email than on the phone. People are also more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call say—than if they have time to think of a response, says Hancock. He found many lies are spontaneous(脱口而出的) responses to an unexpected demand such as: “Do you like my dress?” Hancock hopes his research will help companies work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance the phone might be the best medium for sales where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But given his result work assessment, where honesty is a priority,it might be best done using email. 1.What is Hancock’s study centered upon? A.The consequences of lying in various communications media. B.People’s preference in selecting communications technologies. C.People’s honesty levels across a range of communications media. D.The success of communications technologies in conveying viewpoints. 2.Why are people more likely to tell the truth through certain media of communications? A.They believe that honesty is the best policy. B.They tend to be relaxed when using those media. C.They are most practiced at those forms of communication. D.They are concerned about leaving behind traces of their lies. 由第四段中的“People appear to be afraid...This is why fewer lies appear in email than on the phone.” 3.What do the underlined words “hold them to account” in the fourth paragraph most probably mean? A.Do them a favour. B.Catch up with them. C.Keep them informed. D.Let them take responsibility. 4.Why does Hancock view the telephone as a preferable medium for promoting sales? A.Salesmen may feel relaxed to overstate. B.Salesmen can talk directly to their customers. C.Salesmen may pass on instant messages effectively. D.Salesmen can impress customers as being trustworthy. 由最后一段中的“For instance the phone might be the best medium for sales where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth.” 故选A项。 B (2024·河北石家庄高二上期末) Most people don’t lie very much.It makes sense.By being honest with people, you not only build up goodwill, but also save a lot of brainpower since your brain doesn’t have to do anything out of the ordinary when you tell the truth. You just think of what you want to say,and you say it. Actually, lying takes much more work.Imagine you’re late for class and the teacher asks why.If you decide to lie,you have to make up a story on the spot, think about the various directions the conversation might take and figure out what you need to say to keep this whole lie from falling apart. You might not be aware of it,but you just give your brain a lot of extra work.“A lot of that brain work is done in a region called the prefrontal cortex. It’s the part in charge of working memory,” explains Jennifer Vendemia,a scientist from the University of South Carolina. Working memory keeps something in mind just for a little while, such as remembering instructions for how to play a game or some other specific tasks. It stores things for only a short while as you’re using them, and it doesn’t put them in long-term storage.Besides working memory, the prefrontal cortex also takes care of tasks such as planning,problem-solving and self-control.Scientists describe these as executive function tasks.Executive function lets you think a step or two ahead to make sure the lie you’re telling will likely hold up to questioning.“Spending so much brainpower trying to keep a story straight means there’s less available for other things,” says Vendemia.“Lying is especially harmful to young people as the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until around age 25.When the prefrontal cortex is busy with tasks related to lying, younger people have a harder time doing other tasks.” Lying has social costs, too.People generally value honesty and don’t like liars. So if people view you as untrustworthy,it can be bad for your relationships. 5.What is the first paragraph mainly about? A.The costs of lying to people. B.The true meaning of honesty. C.The benefits of being truthful. D.The difficulty of being a good liar. 根据第一段中“By being honest with people, you not only build up goodwill, but also save a lot of brainpower”可知,这一段主要写了诚实的好处。故选C项。 6.Why is a lying student mentioned in the second paragraph? A.To analyze a case. B.To introduce a topic. C.To provide the background. D.To give an example. 根据第二段内容尤其是第一句“Actually, lying takes much more work.” 7.Which of the following is the function of working memory? A.Remembering a life-long lesson. B.Storing information for a short time. C.Pushing oneself to face difficulties. D.Processing information in the brain. 根据第三段中“Working memory keeps something in mind just for a little while...” 8.What is the passage mainly about? A.The reasons why people lie. B.The harmful effects of lying. C.The part of brain in charge of lying. D.The ways to avoid being caught lying. Ⅲ.完形填空(每小题1分,共15分) My son Darcy,10,begged “No more needles”,tears rolling down his cheeks.Seeing him so 1 broke my heart.Darcy had a surgery and the needle would provide a blood transfusion(输血).It looked like the 2 was successful, but Darcy only got sicker.
