I started playing the piano when I was around four years old—that was 15 years ago!—and since then, the longest I haven’t touched piano keys was probably two months. This was an enormous amount of devotion to something that I wasn’t even planning to make money off of—so there must have been something worth holding on to, right?
The easy guess is that I was always so purely in love with music and piano that I couldn’t bear to let them go. However, it’s a bit more complicated than that. I struggled a lot with piano. I felt pressure to improve, innovate, and be the best in order to prove something to others. The seed of my musical interest was grown with competition and doubt.
It’s difficult to learn to love something that you didn’t choose in the first place. But somehow, sometime, love grew. And by high school, it was strong enough that I found the strength to hold on tighter, dig further, and find something of my own to grow. In a way, I had to start over.
And so, I took a pause. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who encouraged me and helped me tunnel into what I loved, not what I was told I should learn. Anything I had was good enough to be loved.
This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted to learn on my own—this was just for me, to form a new relationship to music. Even though my guitar skills are miles lower than my piano skills, I feel I can express myself even more wholly through strings than keys. There’s just something about doing it all for myself that has helped me heal the damages to my relationship to music.
The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something you once loved—or something you never chose—remember that with dedication, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
4. What can we learn about the author’s experience from Paragraph 1?
A. He probably spent two months in playing the piano.
B. He began to play the piano when he was 15 years old.
C. He thought it necessary to start playing the piano early.
D. He committed himself to the piano not for financial factors.
5. Which of the following words best describes the author’s relationship with the piano?
A. Bittersweet. B. Harmonious. C. Painful. D. Passive.
6. What inspired the author to learn the guitar?
A. His teacher’s constant encouragement. B. His desire for a new relationship with music.
C. His interest in strings rather than keys. D. His talent for playing musical instruments.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Practice makes perfect B. Love cannot be forced
C. Love is a thing that grows D. There is no end to learning
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

I struggled a lot with piano. 以及最后一段中“The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted to learn on my own—this was just for me, to form a new relationship to music. (今年夏天,我开始学吉他。我有意地想要自己学习——这只是为了我自己,与音乐建立一种新的关系。)”可知,作者渴望与音乐建立一种新的关系而学习吉他。故选B项。

Marathon runner Gerima Mustafa of Uganda walked some 664 kilometers across East Africa earlier this year to call attention to threats to the shea (乳木果) nut tree, a source of food, medical products and income for the many living from West Africa to Somalia.
Now research scientists studying the shea tree in Burkina Faso have found that it is the natural ecosystem that is getting degraded in this region that might do harm to the shea, which is often targeted by charcoal (木炭) traders who kill and sell the trees for far less than the long-term worth of their benefits. The habitats are lost to ever-increasing agricultural shifts too, with a clear overall link to the impacts of human activity.
Scientist Aoife Delaney of the UK, along with Burkinabe researchers and British ecologists, studied 10 different parkland locations in Burkina Faso where the trees are planted. They say the tree — able to produce nuts for 200 years — relies on pollinators (传粉者) that thrive when other trees and shrub (灌木) species around it create a habitat to support the pollinators, especially bees.
“Consequently, shea productions are likely to benefit from the preservation of a range of different tree and shrub species in parklands,” Delaney and the research team said. Their work was recently published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.
The authors recommend maintaining a range of native woody species throughout their lifespans, and planting new ones into farmland when cleared. The idea is to be intentional and active about protecting the trees.
“Only separate parts of semi-natural habitat in the surrounding landscape may not be sufficient to provide the necessary pollination services,” they concluded. “In a region that is subject to nutritional poverty and where the fund required to supply local foods is lacking for most families, maintaining natural ecosystem services that support food provision must be a priority.”
8. Why is Gerima Mustafa mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To describe a marathon runner’s experience. B. To suggest the popularity of Gerima Mustafa.
C. To introduce the importance of shea nut trees. D. To explain an approach to protecting the wildlife.
9. What is a great threat to the shea nut trees in Burkina Faso?
A. The agricultural development. B. The illegal hunting of animals.
C. The disturbance of human activity. D. The pollution in their natural habitat.
10. What does the underlined word “thrive” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Increase. B. Spread. C. Escape. D. Change.
11. What do the scientists recommend locals to do to protect the shea nut trees?
A. Provide hand-pollination services. B. Keep the biodiversity within ecosystem.
C. Replace the old shea trees with new ones. D. Open up more natural habitats for pollinators.
C 9. C 10. A 11. B

In my childhood memories, when my classmates asked me how to pronounce those foreign sounds in our English class, I always said that it was easier to sing them. I was trained in music, so it seemed natural to use music as a way to learn new sounds. But I wondered, was there any truth in what I recommended?
Later, I found that a growing body of research has proved that adult musicians’ brains are indeed functionally different from non-musicians’ brains. The differences were largely explained by the amount of music training they received as children. However, an important question remained: Were these effects driven by genetics (遗传学) or by personal experience?
In a research program, we invited 9-month-old babies and their caregivers to our lab for 12 separate 15-minute visits over a month. We randomly assigned (随机分配) half of the babies to attend music lessons. During the process, their caregivers actively connected with the babies, such as moving them in time with musical beats. The other half just played freely. At the end of the month, we measured the babies’ brain activity in response to musical and speech sounds. We found that the babies attending the music lessons showed improved brain responses. These responses reflected their detection (察觉) of small differences in both musical and speech sounds: The result suggests that my earlier suggestion on learning foreign sounds through music might be reasonable.
Then what would happen in babies’ everyday lives? We collected daylong audio recordings made in North American babies’ home environment when babies were 6, 10, 14, 18, and 24 months. Much to our surprise, we found that babies’ listening environment is mainly filled with speech rather than music. Further, the music that babies hear is largely from an electronic product that is not intended for them.
Despite the ever-growing market for music, our youngest children are missing out on quality musical interactions at home that could be highly beneficial to their development. It’s clear that we should focus on improving these opportunities to make a positive impact on millions of families.
12. Which method of language learning did the author suggest during childhood?
A. Working with a partner in class.
B. Using singing to aid pronunciation.
C. Practicing sounds by loud repetition.
D. Memorizing words by listening to music.
13. What does the music training for babies in the study show?
A. It improves sound recognition abilities.
B. It drives communication with parents.
C. It helps develop better concentration.
D. It greatly reduces stress levels.
14. What came as a shock to the author?
A. The shortage of online music education.
B. The age-related speech differences.
C. Babies’ limited contact with music.
D. Digital products’ harm to babies.
15. What does the author recommend to support children’s development?
A. Adding speech-related exercises.
B. Increasing musical toy production.
C. Offering professional music training.
D. Enriching early musical experiences.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

故填the。
故填from。
故填their。
故填is planted。
故填how。

Having worked at a small food store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager called “customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “sir”, “madam”, “thank you” and “sorry” would see me through any situation. But on a Christmas night an old woman shook my belief that such a glib response (巧言应对) could smooth over any difficulty while dealing with other human beings.
The moment she entered the store, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door. On such a zero-degree night, she was wearing only a faded print dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined legs.
After walking around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables. She looked at the row of cans, finally picked up a can of corn and stared at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good and polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain. An unpleasant smell of sweat rose from her torn clothing.
“I need some food,” she muttered in reply to my bright “Madam, can I help you?”
“Are you looking for corn, madam?”
“I need some food,” she repeated, looking down at the can in her hand, “Any kind.”
“Well the can of corn is ninety-five cents, madam.” I said in my most helpful voice. “Or if you like, we have a special on bread today.”
After a short pause, she lifted her head and said, “But I can’t pay.”
For a second, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that she could take the corn.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph1:
Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: remain polite but do not let the customers get the best of you.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version 1:
Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: remain polite but do not let the customers get the best of you. At the thought of that, I managed a friendly smile and automatically blurted out, “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t give away anything for free.” Hearing this, the old woman nodded her head, her face darkened and eyelids dropped. Unwillingly, she put the can back on the shelf, shuffled past me toward the door and vanished into the distance. It was at that moment that a ripple of regret welled up inside me. How I wished I hadn’t said those words! (81 words)
Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn. Fortunately, the gaunt figure of the old woman was still in sight, so I went running up to her. “Madam, Merry Christmas!” said I, thrusting the can of corn into her hand. For a second, I could feel that her hand quivered. Without waiting for her reply, I just waved her goodbye before trotting straight away. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman constantly reminded me that while dealing with other human beings, it was sincere concern rather than a glib response that could smooth over any difficulty. (92 words)
Possible version 2:
Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: remain polite, but do not let customers get the best of you. For a moment, I even entertained the idea that this was some sort of test, and that this woman was someone from the head office, testing my loyalty. I responded dutifully, “I’m sorry, madam, but I can’t give away anything for free.” The old woman’s face collapsed a bit more and her hands trembled as she put the can back on the shelf. She shuffled past me toward the door, her torn and dirty clothing barely covering her bent back. (80 words)
Moments after she left, I rushed out the door with the can of corn. But she was nowhere in sight. While I was dragging myself back, what kept me company was merely biting wind. For the rest of my shift, the image of the woman haunted me. I was so young, healthy and smug while she was so old, sick and desperate. Wishing with all my heart that I had acted like a human being rather than so merciless an employee, I was saddened to realize when facing dilemmas how difficult it was for a heart to stay gold. (85 words)

C He thought it necessary to start playing the piano early.
C His interest in strings rather than keys. D. His talent for playing musical instruments.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Practice makes perfect B. Love cannot be forced
C. Love is a thing that grows D. There is no end to learning
C

A. The shortage of online music education.

“Well, the can of corn is ninety-five cents, madam.” I said in my most helpful voice. “Or if you like, we have a special on bread today.”
After a short pause, she lifted her head and said, “But I can’t pay.”
For a second, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that she could take the corn.

Moments after she left, I rushed out of the door with the can of corn.
