It’s 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (闹钟) rings in my ears. I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. It’s not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.
Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you”, or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no”. I shouldn't feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat.
So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a. m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self-confidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.

C. Because she feels a sense of achievement.
D. Because she enjoys the interesting DVD.
5. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?
A. She doesn’t treat others politely.
B. She likes to make others surprised.
C. Others try to help her by offering her food.
D. Others don’t understand what she does.
6. What does the underlined word “Commitment” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Good health. B. A strong power
C. Firm belief D. A regular habit
7. What can we learn about the author from the text?
A. She aims to develop a good body shape.
B. She acts in a strange way.
C. She wants to look different from others.
D. She has difficulty getting along with others.
C
Music has long been recognized as an important part of human culture. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have focused on the impact of music education on students’ overall development.
Research shows that learning to play a musical instrument can enhance cognitive abilities. For example, it improves memory, as students need to remember musical notes, rhythms, and sequences. A study conducted at a leading university found that students who took music lessons for at least two years had better long-term memory compared to their peers who didn’t. They were able to recall information more accurately and quickly.
Moreover, music education also has a positive effect on students’ language skills. Learning to read music involves understanding symbols, just like learning to read words. This process helps students develop better reading skills. Additionally, singing and playing instruments require proper breath control, which is beneficial for speech production. Students who are engaged in music often have more articulate speech.
In the social aspect, music can bring people together. School bands, choirs, and music clubs provide opportunities for students to interact, cooperate, and build relationships. They learn to work towards a common goal, such as performing a piece of music flawlessly. This collaborative experience helps students develop teamwork skills, which are essential in both their academic and future professional lives.
However, in some schools, music education is facing challenges. Due to budget cuts, some schools have reduced or even eliminated music programs. This is a shortsighted decision, as the benefits of music education far outweigh the cost.
8. What cognitive (认知) ability can be improved by learning to play a musical instrument?
A. Visual perception. (视角感知) B. Mathematical skills
C. Spatial (空间) awareness D. Memory
9. How does music education benefit students’ language skills?
A. By improving their writing skills and speech production.
B. By helping them understand grammar better.
C. By making them more confident in speaking.
D. By promoting reading skills directly.
10. What can students gain from participating in school music groups?
A. Teamwork skills B. Problem-solving skills.
C. Leadership skills. D. Time-management skills.
11. Why is it a shortsighted decision to cut music programs in some schools?
A. Because music is a popular subject among students.
B. Because the cost of music education is very low.
C. Because music programs attract more students to the school.
D. Because the benefits of music education are significant.
D
Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger” (视频博主). The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting with their fans about everyday life.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that's enough for him.
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Most young Britons choose to be vloggers as their job.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’career choice.
C. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios.
D. Young Britons can not find jobs without the Internet.
13. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Vloggers can earn greater fame and more money on the Internet.
B. There is too much competition in the traditional show business.
C. The Internet makes it convenient to enter show business.
D. Anyone with a computer will surely become a star.
14. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. Only a few vloggers can be famous and wealthy.
B. A vlogger can not earn fame and fortune.
C. People often see the bright side of being a vlogger.
D. Dreams will always remain dreams.
15. What do young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Learn from others. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Combine jobs with hobbies.

C Leadership skills. D. Time-management skills.
11. Why is it a shortsighted decision to cut music programs in some schools?
A. Because music is a popular subject among students.
B. Because the cost of music education is very low.
C. Because music programs attract more students to the school.
D. Because the benefits of music education are significant.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
