The Best Ice Rinks (溜冰场) in Europe
Zero Degrees, London, the UK
The Maritime Museum in Greenwich has opened an ice rink this year for the first time. It’s outside the Queen’s House (where Elizabeth II was born) and has a great view of the River Thames, creating a wonderful skating experience. It’s a little cheaper than competing museum ice rinks, and less busy, too. There is no need to book tickets online. You can simply turn up and buy tickets there. Next to the outdoor ice rink there is an indoor bar for those who simply wish to watch, and it’s open until late.
●Ticket prices: adult from £13.50, child from £6.75
Skating Heroes, Hungary
Budapest’s City Park ice rink opens daily from November to February of the following year: it’s one of the largest and oldest open-air rinks in Europe and it is beautiful. It is easily reached by train or subway. A cafe serve hot chocolate, wine and traditional chimney cakes. If you are fortunate, you may see some of Budapest’s older residents ballroom dancing on the ice.
●Ticket prices: adult from £3.50, child free
Bite-Size, Poland
Among the old townhouses and shops of Warsaw’s Old Market Place is a unique Polish rink — shaped like a bagel (面包圈). Skaters glide around a statue of the mermaid (美人鱼) who stands for the city. Once you’ve burned all those calories on the ice, you’ll be pleased to see the square is packed with Warsaw’s best cooks, serving street food until late.
●Ticket prices: from £2
Spikersuppa, Norway
It is a great skating rink in downtown Oslo. For the best skating, you should go there late in the evening, as the kids all head home — it’s lit until 9 pm, the music will play and the hot chocolate will flow. It’s free if you bring your own skates, or you can spend £13 renting a pair.

A. It doesn’t allow children to skate late.
B. It is a new ice rink situated in London.
C. It is the cheapest ice rink in Europe.
D. It is crowded and you need to book tickets in advance.

This is the heart-warming moment a girl was reunited with her beloved wolf toy after it was lost when they moved house.
Three-year-old Avalon Mulcahy and her family moved from California to Hawaii after her father changed his job. They spent time in two temporary lodgings (落脚处) before finally making the big move to their new house. But along the way, with the two house moves, Avalon’s beloved soft toy, Violet, went missing. And despite her mother’s best efforts to try and find it, they never did. Avalon kept asking her mother where Violet was — even hoping Santa would bring her one for Christmas.
Her mother Jennifer looked online, but the toy — which they had bought at Great Wolf Lodge Anaheim, California, an activity center for children — wasn’t available online, only in the store. Jennifer contacted the store to see if one could be shipped to their new address and one arrived the next day.
Avalon was excited as she held a cardboard box — unaware what was inside it. Her mother told her to open the box. Avalon tore off the plastic wrapping to see her beloved toy. Avalon let out a scream as she realised she had been reunited with Violet.
And as an extra surprise, the company even packed Violet an item of clothing as Avalon said: “It’s her dress!” Moments later, Avalon broke down into floods of tears as she held Violet close to her chest.
In a special message, Avalon said thank you to the company for sending her a new wolf toy. Jennifer said: “Violet went just about everywhere with Avalon. In fact, the original Violet was a little old, so I had to make repairs several times. When Violet went missing, I thought that Avalon would find another animal toy to love, but I was wrong, very wrong.”
24. Why did Avalon Mulcahy and her family move house?
A. Because Avalon’s mother managed to find a new job.
B. Because they had to follow her father to a new place.
C. Because they had to find Avalon’s lost pet.
D. Because Avalon wanted to spend Christmas somewhere else.
25. How did Avalon feel when Violet was lost?
A. Sad. B. Indifferent.
C. Disappointed. D. Angry.
26. What can we learn about Violet from the passage?
A. It had seldom been played with by Avalon.
B. It was ordinary and sold online in large quantities.
C. It was so loved by Avalon that it broke several times.
D. It was new and had many clothes to wear.
27. What did Avalon do after she received the new toy?
A. She expressed her love to her mother in a special message.
B. She burst into tears as it was not the original one.
C. She cried with joy.
D. She asked her mother to make some repairs to it.

Many homes today are equipped with security cameras to warn the owners if someone is moving in their houses or gardens. French company Netatmo has designed a smart home camera that recognizes familiar faces and warns owners if a stranger has entered their home.
“Current security cameras are not that smart. They can tell you if something is moving but they don’t necessarily know whether it’s a stranger or your kid; they don’t know the difference. So, they will remind you all the time, even when lighting conditions change and it can be very annoying,” explained the manager of Netatmo.
When family members enter a home, the smart camera “recognizes” them and sends information to the owner’s phone. The owner can check the information at a convenient time. But if a thief enters a home, the camera will send a warning that will sound an alarm on the owner’s phone.
That’s what happened recently to smart home camera owner Damien in Paris.
“On a Friday I was at work. When my phone rang, it told me that there was a movement in my house and also a face that the app did not recognize,” said Damien.
So the French businessman turned on the video and was shocked at what he saw.
“I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on, which is totally forbidden in my home. I was watching it live on video. So I felt totally frozen. I asked a colleague to take me back home as fast as possible and I called the police on the way,” he said. In the end, the thief was sentenced to nine months in prison.
28 How does a smart home camera differ from current security cameras?
A. It is smaller than current security cameras.
B. It has more functions than current security cameras.
C. It can help catch a thief more quickly.
D. It is cheaper than current security cameras.
29. Through current security cameras, we can know ________.
A. whether someone is moving in our house
B. whether someone is angry or not
C. whether someone is a stranger or not
D. whether the lights need to be turned on
30. A smart home camera will _______ when it sees a stranger in the home.
A. send the stranger’s identity information to the owner’s cellphone
B. inform the owner by sending a text message to the owner’s phone
C. get in contact with the police at once
D. send a warning to the owner’s cellphone
31. The example of Damien aims to show ________.
A. smart home cameras can protect owners from being hurt
B. current security cameras work better than smart home cameras
C. smart home cameras cannot work unless they are connected to a cellphone
D. smart home cameras can protect people’s belongings from being stolen
D
There is evidence that stress can lead to sleepless nights, so it makes sense that people with especially demanding jobs may have more trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Interestingly, however, researchers from the University of South Florida find that having too few job demands can lead to sleeplessness as well.
Study authors explain the ideal job situation when it comes to sleep is something in the middle; moderately (适度地) demanding jobs predict the best sleep health. People working in such roles report both a more regular sleep schedule and falling asleep faster.
Importantly, researchers add that the amount of control an individual feels they have over their working conditions plays a big role in sleep quality as well. The more in control one feels about their job, the better their chances of sleeping well.
“The finding of previous study that demanding work reduces sleep quality may be over-simplified,” says senior study author Soomi Lee, an assistant professor in the USF College of Behavioral. The new findings move beyond the previous study that job demands should be minimized as much as possible to protect workers’ health.
In the new study, nearly 3,000 adults (average age of 48) was analyzed by study authors to reach these findings. About half of these people possessed at least a four-year college degree. Participants were asked about five specific aspects of their jobs: intensity (强度), role conflict, work overload, time pressure, and interruptions. Additionally, they were asked to respond to questions in relation to five aspects of their sleep patterns: regularity, satisfaction/ quality, daytime alertness (机敏), efficiency, and duration.
All in all, study authors say people sleep best when they enjoy moderate job demands and proper control over their work. Specifically ,that means one’s commitment on work tasks, making decisions about one’s work environment, and learning new things on the job. The research team believes this study can help raise awareness about the importance of job demands &job control balance and is of great help for employers to settle on ideal work environments that promote healthy sleep among employees.
32. Who are most likely to have the best sleep quality according to the new study?
A. People who are under the least pressure.
B. People whose jobs are beyond their control.
C. People who are doing properly demanding jobs
D. People whose jobs are extremely stressful.
33. What is Soomi Lee’s attitude towards the finding of previous study?
A. Supportive. B. Negative.
C. Objective. D. Unknown.
34 What can we learn from the last paragraph but one?
A. The majority of the participants are in their fifties
B. Participants were required to tell their salaries.
C. Around 1,500 participants hold a college degree.
D. Participants were asked which sleeping position they like most.
35. What is the significance of the new study?
A. It can help reduce people’s job pressure.
B. It can help people balance their work and life
C. It can help solve people’s sleeplessness.
D. It can help employers create good work environments for employees.

A teacher decided to honor (表彰) her students in high school by telling them the difference they have made. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time and told them how the student made a difference to her and the class. She presented each of them with a blue ribbon (丝带) imprinted with gold letters which read, “Who I Am Makes A Difference.”
Afterwards, the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of influence recognition (表彰,赞誉,承认) would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this recognition ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results and report back to the class in a week.
One boy in the class went to a manager in a company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and said, “We’re doing a class project on recognition, and we’d like you to find somebody to honor, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can appreciate a third person to keep this ceremony going.”
Later that day the manager went in to see his boss. He sat his boss down and told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius (天才). The boss seemed very surprised. The manager asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss accepted it delightedly.
As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, “Would you do me a favor? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honoring somebody else? The young boy who first gave the ribbon to me is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people.”

28. How does a smart home camera differ from current security cameras?
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31.

A. Supportive. B. Negative.
C. Objective. D. Unknown.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph but one?
A. The majority of the participants are in their fifties
B. Participants were required to tell their salaries.
C. Around 1,500 participants hold a college degree.
D. Participants were asked which sleeping position they like most.
35. What is the significance of the new study?
A. It can help reduce people’s job pressure.
B. It can help people balance their work and life
C It can help solve people’s sleeplessness.
D. It can help employers create good work environments for employees.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. C 35. D

Paragraph Ⅰ: That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and told him about his day.
