A (选自人教版选择性必修第四册 Unit 5) WORKING OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO As an adult, one of the first questions you are asked when meeting someone new is,“What do you do?” This is because your career is a very important part of who you are.The career you have defines your life, and so taking time to think about it is an essential exercise for young people. The best time to start thinking about possible careers is while you are still at school, before you make any choices about your further education. This, however,is not always easy. Some people know what they want to do from a young age,but many others just have a few ideas bouncing around in their heads. One of the most effective ways to get some insight on a possible career path is to complete a “career aptitude test”.The results of the test will tell you about your strengths and interests, and some tests also suggest careers that you may be suited to.Having this information will provide you with a better chance of finding a job you like. There are many free tests online,so give one a try.Getting a head start in considering your future career may help you for the rest of your life. You don’t want to look back in years to come and say,“I wish I had thought more about what I really wanted to do.” There are many different kinds of career aptitude tests. Some ask questions about your personal interests and attitudes.Others focus more on asking you to rate different kinds of work scenarios, like working as a librarian or a lawyer.Of course, while completing these sorts of tests,it is very important to be honest—and don’t worry—there are no right or wrong answers. Career Aptitude Test examplePage 1 of 10 How do you feel about the work tasks below? 1 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Assemble a chest of drawers 2 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Drive an ambulance 3 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Help develop a cure for breast cancer 4 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Analyse the elements hydrogen and radium 5 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Design a new range of wrist accessories 6 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Design clothes for brides and bridegrooms 7 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Teach children geometry 8 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Help and advise people in serious debt 9 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Manage a hair and nail shop 10 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Provide investment advice 11 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Check and edit education materials 12 ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Categorise employee profiles One popular test asks the participants to grade their preferences for a variety of work tasks.Their answers are then analysed and divided up between six different types of work personalities. The participant is then given a chart showing their score for each type of work personality. The top three scores are used to make a code that indicates the participant’s overall work personality. This code is then used to generate a list of career suggestions. The career suggestions are also based on your education and experience level, but you can look at higher-level careers as well, which is very useful for high school students. For example, you could look at the basic careers to see what work you might like now,and then look at the more advanced careers so you know what you may like to aim for in the future. This is a great tool to help plan your career and let you know what targets you need to reach to get there. In conclusion, career aptitude tests are clearly a very useful tool. However,it is important to remember that they are only meant for guidance. The secret to a good career is finding something that you are passionate about. So try a few tests online and start thinking about your future career right now! 词汇积累 1.aptitude n.天资;天赋 2.be suited to适合于 3.head start起步前的优势 4.scenario n.设想;方案;预测 5.assemble vt.组装;装配 vt.& vi.收集;聚集;集合 6.bridegroom n.新郎 1.Why is an adult asked a question about their work by a new person? D.The top two scores. 答案 B B (选自译林版选择性必修第四册Unit 3) If you were asked the question,“Do you work to live or live to work?”,what would your answer be? Some might say that we work because we have to,not least because we need the salary that enables us to be financially independent. It is certainly true that most of us do join the labour force once our studies are completed.Indeed,it could be argued that our education is geared towards preparing us for a life of work. However, earning a living is by no means the only reason why we work—there are other important reasons that motivate us to enter the world of work. Through the work we do,our goals can be attained and our dreams achieved. All of us have had dreams of one kind or another and work often enables us to pursue those dreams.Henry David Thoreau said,“...if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined,he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Yang Liwei, for example, driven by his passion for flying, became a pilot and then China’s first astronaut in space.Wherever our interests may lie and whatever our career choices might be,work allows us the opportunity to be engaged in something we are fond of,and consequently,it can give us a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. Work can also help develop our skills, thus providing room for personal growth. When we work,we must practise our skills constantly and continuously until we excel in what we do.Our rapidly changing workplace makes it necessary for us to keep up and develop new skills.Twenty years ago, positions in social technologies or energy efficiency did not even exist, and it is difficult to anticipate the new positions which will emerge twenty years from now. However,it is certain that no one can afford to be satisfied with the status quo.In order to better adapt ourselves to new circumstances,we must be ready and willing to acquire new skills. This can add to our sense of achievement and our knowledge that we are developing as individuals while we move along our chosen career path. Not only does work benefit us personally,it also contributes to the health of society. At the most basic level, different types of jobs are like gears in a machine. They work to ensure that the machine we call “society” functions properly. In a successful, stable and productive society, all jobs are equally important and no one is superior to another,so we should not have prejudice against any of them.Whether we are scientists, lawyers, doctors, public servants, consultants, clerks, receptionists or butchers,we all make our respective contributions. Moreover, there are people who choose to step out of their comfort zone and commit themselves to working for the benefit of others. For example, teachers in remote rural areas are devoted to changing the lives of the people with less access to the advantages enjoyed by many others. In this way,we work to advance our communities and bring success to our nation. Wherever life takes us and whatever choices are laid out before us,something worth remembering is that our work, when done well, will not only help us make a living but also help make a life for ourselves and for others. We can take pride in the knowledge that hard work is essential for our individual well-being as well as for the benefit of our society as a whole. 词汇积累 1.labour n.劳工;劳动,(尤指)体力劳动;分娩期,分娩 vi.努力做;干苦力活 2.earn a living 谋生 3.by no means 决不,一点儿也不 4.endeavour vi. 1.Why does the author use the example of Yang Liwei?
