This is a letter by Selena Bieber to the students in her school.

Later Is Better!
Selena Bieber
Northville High School
Do you feel it’s hard to get up early for school and even harder to listen well in the first class at 8 a.m.? Well, this happens to most of us and is not helpful for our learning!
Some studies show that teenagers’ brains make melatonin, the hormone (荷尔蒙) that helps sleep, between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. So it’s better for us to sleep during these nine hours. But here comes the problem. We’re asked to get to school by 7:30 a.m. That means we have to get up before 7 when our brains should still be sleeping. That’s why we’re always so tired and can’t think clearly in early morning classes. No clear head, no good learning, right?
If we can’t change how our body works, why can’t school start later? In this way, we can not only sleep more but also learn better!
Want to help us make it happen?
Visit www.nvhsstudsup.org/later-better to learn more.
18. What problem is Selena Bieber trying to fix?
A. High school lessons are too difficult. B. Classes start too early in the morning.
C. Too many students are late for school. D. Lunch break is too short for taking a rest.
19. What can we learn from the letter?
A. Too much melatonin can hurt teenagers’ brains.
B. The brain stops making melatonin after 11 p.m.
C Sleeping longer helps the body make more melatonin.
D. It is easier to fall asleep when the brain is making melatonin.
20. Below is some information from another study.
We studied 48 high school students and found that the students who went to bed earlier did better on their school tests. This is not only true for those who slept nine hours, but also true for those who slept less. And some of them agreed that they learned better in early morning classes.
Do the ideas in Selena Bieber’s letter agree with the information?
A. Yes, because her letter says it is better to sleep from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.
B. Yes, because her letter says getting up early is not helpful for learning.
C. No, because her letter says students are asked to get to school by 7:30 a.m.
D. No, because her letter says teenagers’ brains do not work well in early morning classes.
B 19. D 20. D

根据“Some studies show that teenagers’ brains make melatonin, the hormone (荷尔蒙) that helps sleep, between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.”和“it’s better for us to sleep during these nine hours”可知,青少年的大脑在晚上11点到早上8点之间产生有助于睡眠的褪黑激素。
根据“This is not only true for those who slept nine hours, but also true for those who slept less. And some of them agreed that they learned better in early morning classes.”可知,另一项研究表示早睡学生成绩更好,但部分人认为清晨课堂学习效果更佳;根据“That’s why we’re always so tired and can’t think clearly in early morning classes.”

Why Is There No E Grade in Exams or E Seats on Trains?
When students receive their exam results, they often see grades like A, B, C, D, and F. But have you ever wondered why there’s no ___35___ grade? Similarly, if you’ve traveled ___36___ train, you might have noticed that seats are labeled (标签) A, B, C, D, and F, but E is missing. What’s the reason behind this?
The Missing E Grade in Exams
In the grading system used in many schools, A is the highest score, followed by B, C, and D. F stands for “fail”, meaning the student didn’t ___37___ the exam. But why is there no E? The answer lies in history. When the grading system was first ___38___ (create), educators wanted to make a clear distinction (区分) between passing ___39___ failing. They decided to skip E to avoid confusion (混淆). E is too close ___40___ F, making it harder for students and parents to understand whether they passed ___41___ failed. By skipping E, the difference between D (the lowest passing grade) and F (fail) became clearer.
The Missing E Seat on Trains
The ___42___ (same/different) logic applies to train seats. When trains were first designed, seat labeling followed the order of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, and so on. However, E was often skipped to avoid confusion. For example, on planes, ___43___ /si:ts/ are labeled A, B, C, D, F, and so on, with E missing. This is because E could be easily confused with F, especially in noisy or crowded environments. By skipping E, passengers can find their seats more ___44___ (quick) and avoid mistakes.
Next time you see your exam results or board a train, you’ll know why E is missing!
E 36. by
37. pass 38. created
39. and 40. to
41. or 42. same
43. seats 44. quickly

根据“Why Is There No E Grade in Exams or E Seats on Trains?”
故填by。
根据“F stands for ‘fail’”和“educators wanted to make a clear distinction (区分) between passing”可知,此处指考试没通过。

故填or。
根据“When trains were first designed, seat labeling followed the order of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, and so on.” 故填same。

They travel more than 100 kilometres every day. They bring about 200,000 meals on bikes or on foot to hungry workers, all at exactly 12: 30 p. m. Many of them can’t read or write. But only one in every around 6,000,000 lunch boxes ever goes missing in one of the biggest cities in the world.
Who are they?
They are dabbawalas, the lunch carriers in Mumbai, India. To people working in the centre of Mumbai, home-cooked meals are like a greeting from their family. But it’s not easy to travel a long way with a lunch box.
Thanks to dabbawalas, they can enjoy a hot, fresh and healthy meal from home far away.
Kiran, an experienced dabbawala, tells the story. “Our method is simple but works well. In the morning we pick up lunch boxes at people’s homes by bike. Then we meet at the local railway station to sort the boxes out. We use colours, numbers and letters to help each other remember the customers’ names and addresses. We won’t get it wrong even in our sleep! When in Mumbai, each of us sends away meals in a certain area. The streets can be busy. The weather can be bad. But the lunch will always be on time. We work hard to serve people. We get back their trust and respect. We feel proud of ourselves.”
Reporter: I’ve heard you’re of the most experienced dabbawalas. Can I ask you some questions?
Kiran: Of course.
Reporter: You work hard to _____ people and get back their trust and _____. What are the biggest challenges in your job?
Kiran: Well, many of us have never learned to read or write, so we have to think of a _____ method to sort out the lunch boxes. Besides, it’s not easy to deliver meals _____ when the weather is bad or when the train is late.
Reporter: Now we have modern ways to deliver meals. Are you afraid of the future of the job?
Kiran: No, I’m not. You know we hardly make mistakes in our work. Only one in every around 6,000,000 lunch boxes _____ goes missing.
Reporter: That’s really amazing!
We won’t get it wrong even in our sleep! __________________________________________
45. ①. serve ②. respect ③. simple ④. on time ⑤. ever
根据“We work hard to serve people. We get back their trust and respect.” 因此第一二空分别为serve和respect;根据“Our method is simple but works well.”可知是简单的方法,因此第三空是simple;根据“When in Mumbai, each of us sends away meals in a certain area. The streets can be busy. The weather can be bad. But the lunch will always be on time.” 但午餐总是准时的,因此当天气不好或火车晚点时,按时送餐并不容易,因此第四空是on time;根据“But only one in every around 6,000,000 lunch boxes ever goes missing in one of the biggest cities in the world.” 故填serve;respect;simple;on time;ever。
We“我们”;won’t get it wrong“不会出错”;even“即使”;in our sleep“在我们睡梦中”。
The Importance of “The Last Time”
We’re always talking about “the first time”—the first day of school, the first time we shook on a bike, or the first time we set foot in some foreign land. These moments are like fireworks, bright and loud, and we can’t help but remember them. But here’s the kicker: we hardly ever talk about “the last time”—the last day of school, the last time we held that old toy, or the last time we saw someone dear to us. They’re just as important, but they pass by like a quiet river, unnoticed.
Why Do We Ignore (忽视) “The Last Time”?
Well, for starters, we don’t have a crystal ball, do we? We don’t know when something’s going to happen for the last time. Take toys for example. As kids, we play with them every day, and then one day, poof! We just stop. And it isn’t till years later that we realize, “Hey, that was the last time.” Another reason? “The last time” can be a pill to eat. Saying goodbye to a favorite teacher or leaving the house you grew up in—those things really touch your heart. So, we’d rather not think about it.
Examples of “The Last Time”
Think about the last time your mama or papa read you a bedtime story. At the time, it probably felt like any other night, but looking back, it was the end of something special. Or how about the last time you played with your best buddy before they moved away? You didn’t know it was the last time, but now those memories are worth more than gold.
Why Should We Value “The Last Time”?
Paying attention to “the last time” helps us value what we’ve got right now. It’s a reminder that life’s always changing, and we’re going to hold on to the good things while we can. Imagine if you knew it was the last time you’d see your grandpa or grandma, you’d probably hug them a little tighter, or say “I love you” one more time. By noticing “the last time”, we can live with fewer regrets and more love.
So, while “the first time” may catch everyone’s eyes, “the last time” should also get a loud cheer. It teaches us to treasure the people and moments that make life worth living. Next time you’re doing something, ask yourself: Could this be the last time? If the answer’s yes, then make it count, my friend. Make it count.
47. What are the moments of “the first time” and “the last time” like?
___________________________________________________
48. Why do people ignore “the last time”? Give one reason.
___________________________________________________
49. How do you understand the underlined sentence?
___________________________________________________
50. Share one “last time” experience you have had. (No more than 20 words. )
___________________________________________________
47. The moments of “the first time” are like fireworks, bright and loud, while the moments of “the last time” are like a quiet river, unnoticed.
48. Because people don’t know when something will happen for the last time.
49. It means that although “the first time” attracts more attention, “the last time” is equally important and deserves recognition.
50. I played with my childhood friend before he moved away.
根据“These moments are like fireworks, bright and loud”和“but they pass by like a quiet river, unnoticed.” The moments of “the first time” are like fireworks, bright and loud, while the moments of “the last time” are like a quiet river, unnoticed.
根据“We don’t know when something’s going to happen for the last time.” Because people don’t know when something will happen for the last time.
根据“It teaches us to treasure the people and moments that make life worth living.” It means that although “the first time” attracts more attention, “the last time” is equally important and deserves recognition.

Hey, guys! I have a lot of things I don’t need, so I’m thinking about having a yard safe. What do you think?
Having a yard sale is not easy. You have to collect things, put prices on them, put them out on tables and then wait for people to come. And usually you have to sell things at VERY low prices. For all that time and work, you make very little money. Why not just sell your things online for higher prices?
Debby’s right. But I think, it’d be even better to just give your things to people who need them. I just sent out a lot of things last week.
Hey, I love yard sales! It’s a great chance to make big money if Albert you pick the right day In my experience, Saturday is the best.
I agree with Albert. You can make money and meet interesting people, I made some good friends at my last yard sale.
16 What can we learn about Buffy’s friends?
A. Matt has experience of yard sales.
B. Jamie had a successful yard sale last week.
C. Albert thinks weather is important for yard sales.
D. Debby thinks things are cheaper online than at yard sales.
17. What do Buffy’s friends think about having a yard sale?
A. Albert and Matt think it’s a nice way to make friends.
B. Debby and Albert think it’s difficult to make money from it.
C. Matt agrees with Jamie that it’s a good chance to help people.
D. Jamie agrees with Debby that it’s a lot of trouble to prepare for it.

C. Sleeping longer helps the body make more melatonin.

Why Is There No E Grade in Exams or E Seats on Trains?
When students receive their exam results they often see grades like A, B, C, D, and F.
