Studying Abroad
Every year, thousands of students travel to foreign countries to study. More than 30 percent of these students go to the United States. Around 15 percent go to Italy, and 10 percent to both England and Germany. A little less than 10 percent go to Australia, and around 5 percent go to Canada.
No matter where a student chooses to study, there are some things universities around the world need. First, all students must graduate (毕业) from high school before they can apply (申请) to a university. Most universities also need some kind of test for students to enter the university. Universities in the United States, Australia, and Canada usually need some kind of standardized exam, such as the SAT in the United States. Students who do not come from English-speaking countries also must take a test such as the TOEFL in the United States and Canada to show they know enough English to study in English. England and Australia require students to take the IELTS.
In most countries, students must apply to each university they hope to go to. However, students applying to universities in England can use one form to apply to six universities at one time through the British Council (英国文化学会). Many students like this because it can save them a lot of time and money. For universities in other countries, students must fill out different forms for each university and pay a fee with each application (申请).

The Importance of Trees
As we all know, trees are very useful. They are of great benefit to man as follows: First, trees provide us with wood and other products; Second, their roots can allow the rain to sink in and keep the soil, so they help to prevent droughts and floods. Trees can clean air and beautiful life.
Unfortunately, nowadays in many parts of the world lots of people fail to realize the importance of trees. They have cut trees down in large numbers without a plan, which makes the soil washed away. They don't know where there no trees, the rain washed away the surface of the soil and this causes floods.
We ought to plant trees each year and carefully look after new trees in order not to make the forest slowly disappear. Only' in this way can we make the forest serve man forever.
Water----- the Source of Life
Water is important because only one-third of the water on the Earth is drinkable. If there is no water, there will not be any living things on the earth. In our daily life, we need water for cooking food. We use water to plant crops. So we must stop washing and polluting water. We should turn off the tap when we are bushing our teeth. We mustn't pour harmful chemicals into the rivers. Let's value and protect water together.
The Importance of electricity
Everybody knows that electricity is very important for us. And it helps us a lot in our daily life. Without electricity we can not use the lamp, TV, computers or other things. Then it will be not very convenient for us. Our world may be in the dark. But in fact, the electricity isn't plentiful. So we all should save the energy. For example, when we leave rooms, we should turn off the lamp. When we are not using the computer we should turn it off. All of us should save the energy from the bottom of our heart.

Nowadays, more and more people don’t realize the importace of trees, they cut down and burn them. As far as I’m concerned, we should try our best to protect the trees.
As we all know, trees play an important role in our daily life. They remove dust for us as well as produce oxygen back into the air. What’s more, they provide many useful things for us such as wood, fruit and so on. In return, we should protect them by not cutting them down or burning them. In addition, we should stop using plastic bags. All in all, trees are our friends. We should protect them. Without trees, we can’t live.

A scientist who had examined the ears of hundreds of children in Europe found that about one quarter of the children were a little deaf.
These children didn’t know it themselves; they thought they should hear as well as anybody. The teachers said so , too, only they were quite sure that those special children were the dull ones at school. No doubt they were rather surprised when they knew that generally the dull ones were also the deaf ones .
The same man next went to a school in England. There he asked the teachers to pick out seventy bright children and seventy dull children for him to examine. He found about twice as many deaf children among the seventy who were dull as among the seventy who were bright. Dullness and deafness often go together.
From there he went to another school, where he found that most of the bright children could hear his watch tick when it was as far from their ears as fifty inches, while most of the dull children could not hear it unless it was as near to them as thirty inches.
All these experiments showed that when children are a little deaf they seem dull. But very often deaf children are not really dull . After doctors cure them. they can be as bright as anybody. The chances are that the better we heal the quicker a boy understands.

must have made up fax missing out on my childhood," he says."But the idea of
money ---putting a price on your childhood--- is ridiculous (可笑的).You will never get those years back.Don't you think you can put a price on them?"
"And to me,fame is not a positive thing. The idea of being famous is a lot
better than the reality."
The youngest of four brothers brought up in a middle-class home in Epsom,
Surrey,he honestly says that no one in the family knew what to do with all the money he was making. His mother invested some of it in property (不动产)
but told him the rest was his to do with what he wanted.

A. Choose the best answer.
In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner-a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents know what their children want. Cath , a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they don’t like to have school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”
However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have a always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them.”
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as good stews and curries for the children instead.
So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
Anna, a pupil, told us, “We used to have a fast food window where you got chips and coke, but they stopped that this year. There’s a salad restaurant, which is good, so it’s healthier than it was.”

"I want ten tickets, eight for children and two for adults ." said the father to the ticket lady.
The ticket lady told him the price. When he heard that, the man couldn't believe his ears. He asked again, "How much?"
The ticket lady spoke again. The father looked sad. Clearly, he didn't have 3 money.
My dad took a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he 4 the bill, and said to the man, "Sir, this fell out of your pocket."
The man knew what was going on. He looked into my dad's eyes and took the bill ."Thank you, thank you, sir. This 5 means a lot to me and my family."

“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”
Perhaps it may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them b__1____. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the d__2____ between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In s_3_____, we touch things we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to c___4___ your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them! However, if you want to see more clearly, reach out and t__5____ . you will really see!

Tammy Tan sat near the window and enjoyed the evening gentle breeze. Her jaws ached after a whole of painting. But she didn’t care because she was such a painting lover. She was pleased with the painting. She put down the brush from her mouth and thought of how gently her life had changed since the sad accident a year ago.
On that unusual evening, she was on her way home when she was knocked down by a speeding car. She was seriously hurt and was in hospital for several months. Before that day, the world was rather pretty to twenty-two year old Tammy. She had an amazing job in an advertising company and was interested in surfing, jogging, and mountain. She also had a group of friends who were as active as she.
When the doctor told her that her body from the neck down couldn’t move any longer, Tammy wished that she had died in the accident. She could no longer take part in the outdoor activities that she loved. In addition, she had become completely dependent on others. She could not even feed herself and had to use a wheelchair.
With her family’s help and encouragement, Tammy was able to deal with her physical problem. Her mother encouraged her to take up painting and she discovered that she was good at it. Since she could not use her hands, she held the brush in her mouth. It was tiring but she made it.
