I used to lose my temper at my wife when I got blues, she just suffered silently. When our daughter was born into the world, I was not at her side. It was not because of my job that I was not there. 3 I enjoyed myself with some friends. Never did I change a wet diaper. How selfish I was! 5 years later, she gave birth to our son. And I moved to another place; seldom did I stay with her. She lived in her unit, looking after our daughter with no one around to help her. What’s 4 , there was no one living in the unit during the night. I could never 5 how she managed to be so courageous. “A woman is like a teabag, you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water”. I think that my wife is even so, but I would rather I myself get into hot water instead of her. “You can not just love someone by saying you love someone wholeheartedly while doing nothing for her.” Actions speak louder than words. I am 6 successful, but it is my responsibility to make sure my wife and children live a happy life. It is her dream to buy a decent car so that we can improve our life quality, but the flats cost us a huge amount of money, and we are still in debt. But in some countries, you’ll need 1 money to tip people who help you. How much should you give? North America In the USA and Canada, failing to tip is extremely rude. Waiters and waitresses often earn low wages, so they 2 tips. Give them at least 15 percent of the cost of your meal before tax. If the service is really good, tip 20 percent. You should also tip hotel housekeepers, tour guides and taxi drivers. Africa In most African countries, tip waiters 10 percent of the bill. But in South Africa, give them 15 percent. In hotels, the concierge (看门人) may offer services 3 booking show tickets. For these services, give the concierge a tip in advance. And don't forget to tip porters and taxi drivers. Europe Tipping customs in Europe are different from country to country. In France, waiters 4 receive tips because the cost of service is included in the bill. Many English restaurants also include a service charge. In Germany, there is no service charge, so a 10 to 15 percent tip is proper. Make sure you tip in cash, so the money gets to your waiter. Asia In Southeast Asia, tips are not usually given. But people may appreciate them if you choose to, give them. Perhaps you are too busy with your schoolwork to 1 consider these chances. I encourage traveling at a young age. The earlier you travel widely, the more you can learn. As young people, most of us live with mom and dad. Our community knows us well, too. The idea of 2 this comfort zone can be scary. However, one learns the most in strange situations. But once you work out that, you can connect with people in spite of differences, you become 3 and more confident. You should learn to face this discomfort. It will help you to grow. By traveling wide and far, you will also develop cultural sensitivity (文化敏感性). Being culturally sensitive is very important. And it is not enough to just know “People from that country are like this.” When I was in Spain, 4 , I found the people there took a two-hour break in the middle of their workday. Many foreigners consider the Spanish people 5 . Few of them know people there place great value on family time. To the Spanish people, eating together as a family is more important than anything else. Cultural sensitivity will help you with your 6 on both business and daily personal affairs. We do not know for sure. In 1997, the American spaceship Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were sent into space. The spaceship carried messages of greeting for any intelligent life forms. There was a difficult question to answer before the messages were sent. How could you “talk” to an alien on another planet? However, some people think it’s cruel for people to post videos of pets. Students in Rose Garden school have a debate and here are their opinions. Yes—pets are cute, funny and even beneficial. Research shows that watching pet videos can reduce stress and make people feel happy, in the 1 way as being with an animal. This is really good for people who can’t have their own pet. Some research shows that videos may even encourage people to buy or adopt a pet. Some vets say taking videos of pets behaving naturally or performing simple tricks is probably harmless. Why shouldn’t pet owners 2 their animals and have fun making videos with them? 6 a pet video gets lots of views, the owner could also earn money, which would be better for both the owner and the pet. Some of my friends joined the newspaper team immediately and enjoyed it. I’d always loved creative writing and drawing cartoons, so I signed up too. My dad, who’s a reporter, was pleased and thought it would be a great opportunity for me. He was right—I loved it! Dad often gave us 2 , which was popular with the students. During the London Marathon in 2018, 47, 000 plastic bottles were thrown away, although some were recycled. This is becoming a big issue for cities——how to host a worthwhile event, encouraging people to exercise and help charities, while protecting the environment? Several cities have developed sustainable (可持续的) plans. 5 , London Marathon tried to reduce the number of drink stations on the running route, giving out water in paper cups and offering some drinks in containers which can be eaten itself. They also created new bottle belts made from 6 plastic so 700 runners could carry water bottles with them during their run. Reproducing means creating more 1 of their group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this. The simplest way is gravity (重力). Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too 2 , it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread this way. Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions (蒲公英) are a good 3 of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are 4 with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly farther from the tree. Some animals help plants spread their seeds. After several months of treatment, Brian’s doctors said that he would never talk again and would have to 1 the rest of his life in a nursing home. However, according to Brian, his two pet parrots didn’t 2 easily. They kept talking to him day and night, until one day, he said one word, then another, and all of a sudden was talking like a normal person again! Brian was so 3 that he decided to set up a home for birds which are not wanted by their owners. Now 15 years later, his house is home to about 80 birds, which included a great variety of birds like several macaws, cockatoos and African grays. The birds fly around from room to room, some cackling (发出咯咯声), others talking like humans. Though they all have big cages, Brian lets them fly freely inside the house. Over the years, Brian has developed a special relationship with birds. The birds who bite other humans, seem to 4 him and can get along with him well. He is now called a bird whisperer (鸟语者). Brian pays for most of the costs of looking after the birds from his own money, but has recently established a foundation (基金) to 5 money. Mike was a quiet boy living with his mother in a shelter (收容所) for the poor. Because he was the 1 reader in his class, he became one of my Reading Help students. Mike knew letters but he couldn’t read at all. However, he worked very hard and made progress very 2 . I often gave him books to take home every night so that he could read them with his mother. One day, Mike didn’t bring his book back. He looked so upset that he was about to cry. When I asked why, he told me that someone had taken his book bag during the night. I put my arm around his shoulders and 3 that I would give him more books to take home. “Maybe the person who took your books,” I said, “will become a good reader just like you.” A few weeks later, I learnt Mike and his mother were moving to a different shelter across town for safety. I began to worry what his future would be if he couldn’t finish the program. Mike’s mother was worried, too, so she put him on public transportation every day and sent him all the way across town to 4 with me. Mike finally graduated from the program as a strong reader. We had a small celebration and I gave him a book to keep. That was the last time I saw Mike. 5 I may never see him again, I’m certain that learning to read changed his life forever. The sun is our greatest source of a vitamin that is essential for good health-vitamin D. During brief winter walks, we receive the greatest benefits when we wear no sunscreen and expose as much skin to the sun as possible. Vitamin D can also be obtained (获得) from 4 . Salmon (三文鱼) is one of the best sources of the vitamin. Egg yolks, cheese, mushrooms and beef liver contain smaller quantities (量) of it. To attract consumers, food companies add vitamin D to some of their milk products. The 5 of putting the vitamin into milk began in the 1930s. At that time, many children were suffering from rickets (佝偻病), an illness that is caused by a vitamin D deficiency (缺失). It made the children’s bones soft and weak. Adding vitamin D to milk helped to solve the problem, and it has been available ever since. For people who still need more, there is another option (选择): take vitamin D supplements (补给品). The weather is getting hotter and you’ll be getting 1 after playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you pour down your throat; something that looks cool may not be good for your health. There are plenty of so-called energy drinks on the market. Most of them have an attractive color and cool name. But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have high levels of caffeine (咖啡因). These drinks are aimed at people of different jobs and ages, 2 young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.   Caffeine raises your heartbeat. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited their use. The amount of caffeine in most energy drinks is 3 as high as in a strong cup of coffee or strong tea. 4 by Australian scientists has found that many teenagers are affected by caffeine. Her exam paper is made by an artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) model according to her 1 . When she finishes her paper, she hands in her paper to her teacher who will later use another AI model to 2 the paper. Then based on the test result, a new learning plan will be made for the girl. This is personalized education at its best. Could this be the future of AI in education? Certainly! With the development of high technology, the realization of an AI classroom will come earlier than we 3 . Here comes the question: How does AI help students learn better? In a classroom with AI technology, both the learning plans and the tests are personalized, and this allows students to learn at their own speed and in their own way. During the learning process, AI models keep monitoring students’ facial expressions to 4 discover when students get into trouble. More amazingly, AI can even predict signs of trouble before students themselves are aware of it. This early prediction enables AI to offer timely (及时的) solutions to problems and suggestions about a better learning plan. 5 , AI technology has made it possible to develop special programs for those who struggle with learning. A company in Massachusetts used AI technology and created a well-known software—Dragon Speech Recognition. With the 6 of voice recognition (识别), students can complete tasks just by speaking. This may be a great helper to those who have difficulty in writing. The role of AI in education may become more and more important. Perhaps, we will see an AI classroom in the near future. Newspapers, magazines and sports programs on TV frequently broadcast boxing matches. Professional (专业的) boxers earn a lot of money, and successful boxers are thought as big heroes. It seems to me that people, especially men, find it exciting because it is an aggressive (攻击性的) sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer, and this gives them the feeling of being a 1 themselves. It is a fact that many people have feeling of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them a chance to use up their aggression. 2 , there is a negative side to boxing. It can be a very dangerous sport. Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur (业余的) boxers 3 have to wear helmets which protects the head, there have frequently been accident in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic results. Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and sometimes, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring. Furthermore, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing, in the form of serious brain 4 , even if a boxer has never been knocked out. I am personally not at all in 5 of aggressive sports like boxing. I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV, and we welcomed more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes and heroines in our society.
