IT was time to return home as David was getting in the boat. He was stung by a jellyfish. His foot became red and swolen. He felt sick and weak. You will have to find away home. A long time ago, way finders traveled all over the pacific ocean. Now I had to finish the trip. I did not feel ready, but I had to become a way finder. I had to find a way home. The Jellyfish Sting
David and I got the boat ready. It was time to return home. As David was getting in the boat, he was stung by a jellyfish. His foot became red and swollen. He felt sick and weak.
"You will have to find our way home," he said to me.
We were in trouble. David was training me to be a wayfinder. A wayfinder can guide a boat across the ocean without a map or compass. A long time ago, wayfinders traveled all over the Pacific Ocean.
Now I had to finish the trip. I did not feel ready. But I had to become a wayfinder. I had to find our way home.
Read the Stars
That night, I used the stars to find our way. There are many stars a wayfinder can use to find the right way. David said the name of each important star. He told me to point to each one as he named it.
I found them all. David never tells anybody they have done a good job. He never smiles.
After David fell asleep, I stayed awake. Wayfinders can't sleep. They have to see how the waves move the boat during the night.
The sun came up in a red and yellow burst. It was morning.
"Time to check the wind," ordered David.
The wind gave direction to the ocean waves. It filled our sail.
Follow the Birds
During the day, I did not have the stars to guide me. I had to remember how the wind blew. I had to figure out how the waves moved.
To my left, I saw seabirds flying in a straight line. I steered the boat to follow them.
"What are you doing?" asked David.
"Following the birds," I said.
"The waves are pushing us east. We'll be lost if we travel too far north," David said.
"One of those birds had a fish in her beak. It is food for her chicks. She is going home. Her home is our home, too," I said.
David stared at me. Then he smiled a little.
"Well done. Take us home," he said.
It was the first time I saw him smile.

The New Dog
Buck was the newest member of the sled dog team. Buck was excited to be on the team. The lead dog, Spitz, did not give Buck a kind welcome.
"My name is Buck!" the new dog said.
"We'll call you New Dog until I say otherwise," Spitz growled. Spitz stared at the new dog, and Buck was frightened.
