“The one boy gets on the bus and he goes ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘I’ m making a hat.’ He said, ‘That would be great having such a warm hat in icy winter.’ So I said, ‘What color do you like?’ That started everything,” Miss Patty told the local newspaper.
Several years have passed since that day and Miss Patty has already knitted 7083 hats for students in her spare time. Sometimes she will get the student’s favourite color before she begins the project.
What is more moving is that Miss Patty buys all the materials using her own money. Some people do give her gift cards around the holidays to help, but she still puts in a lot of her own money.

Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields. Although he was tired after his daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. However, there were very few in the village. After Mo left his hometown and joined the army in 1976, he began to read widely, including works by Lu Xun and many other famous writers. He studied from these writers but did not copy them. Instead, he developed his own style. “I grew up in an environment filled with folk culture. It enters my novels whenever I pick up a pen,” Mo told reporters.

If a friend helps you a lot, what do you do in return? You could just say “thank you”. Or you could write a thank-you note, which is more formal and polite. But most people don’t do this. “People don’t seem to walk around giving thanks to people quite often,” Amit Kumar from University of Texas says.
Why are people hesitant (犹豫的) about sending thank-you notes? And how do most people react (反应) when they receive one?
Kumar and his team asked some students to each write a letter of thanks to another person. Then, they questioned both the writer and the recipient (接收者) about the letter and how it made them feel.
They found that people don’t like to write thank-you notes because they feel like they have to think too much about it. They worry about what to say and how to say it. They overthink the “correctness” of what they are writing.
But people really like receiving thank-you notes. “When you are a recipient, you pay attention to the warmth of the thank,” Kumar says. “How heartfelt was it? How friendly and warm?”
“They feel especially positive when they were in the receiving end of these expressions,” Kumar says.
“If people knew that writing a thank-you note can have such a big influence on the recipient, they would do it more often”, Kumar says.
“Simple, small changes in our everyday lives can make a big difference in how we treat other people and how we feel,” he says.

Can you imagine what the human body in the future will be like? Our class had a discussion about it. Tian Tian, an AI robot, also joined us. Here are our guesses.
____17____ Humans are now 10 centimeters taller than 150 years ago. So in the future, people will probably be even taller. Why? Because most of us today have much better food than those in the past.
You must say that people will be stronger according to the first guess. ____18____ With the development of science and technology, we won’t have much physical work to do. If people get used to this kind of lifestyle, we will probably lose most of our muscles (肌肉).
Next, let’s come to our hands and feet. We are already using our feet less and our hands more. ____19____ At the same time, our fingers and our eyes will both get better because they will have to do more work together.
Here comes the most interesting one—it’s very possible that people will have four toes (脚趾), not five. The little toe really isn’t needed any more. Let’s wait and see.
Last but not least, people won’t have as much hair on their bodies as now, since we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm.
What do you think of our guesses? ____20____ With the rise of AI, will we lose the ability of thinking independently?
A. But you are wrong.
B Will all these things happen?
C. Let’s start with people’s height.
D. Will they still be there in the future?
E. So we can expect our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller.

Writing a good story is not an easy task. What’s the secret? Mo Yan, the 2012 Nobel Prize winner in literature (文学), believes his success comes from doing a lot of reading.
Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong Province. He grew up listening to folk stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later became the inspiration (激励) for Mo’s writing.
Mo left school at the age of 12 and started to work in the fields. Although he was tired after his daily hard work, Mo was always hungry for books. However, there were very few in the village. He read his older brother’s textbooks and even dictionaries. He also helped others with farm work in exchange for books. “When I finished reading all the books around, I thought I was the most knowledgeable man in the world,” he told Xinhua.
As the first Chinese person to win a Nobel Prize in literature, the organization spoke highly of his works. They said his writing is where fantasy and reality meet.
9 What inspired Mo Yan’s writing?
A. Working in the fields. B. Stories he heard as a child.
C. His education at school. D. His family members.
10. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Mo loved reading. B. Mo was helpful to others.
C. Mo got little education. D. Mo enjoyed farm work.
11. What do we know about Mo Yan’s writing style?
A. It is the only one that focuses on folk culture.
B. It is very similar to Lu Xun’s writing style.
C. His life experience in the army influenced it most.
D. His childhood environment had a big effect on it.
12. What can you learn from Mo Yan’s success in literature?
A. Keeping doing what we love may lead us to success.
B. Never try to copy others’ styles in life.
C. We should be thankful to the people around us.
D. It’s important to choose our living environment carefully.
D
If a friend helps you a lot what do you do in return?
13. The underlined word “this” refers to (指代) “________”.
A. receiving thanks B. reading a thank-you note
C. saying “thank you” D. writing a thank-you note
14. According to Kumar, people may ________ when they write a letter of thanks.
A. feel like they have too much to say B. worry too much about what they write
C. feel awkward to give thanks themselves D. think it is no use expressing their thanks
15. Kumar’s study shows that ________.
A. we should give thanks to people quite often B. a thank-you note can make a difference in life
C. writing a thank-you note is difficult for the writers D. saying “thank you” is very important in our lives
16. What is the best title for the text?
A. Take time to thank B. The importance of “thank you”
C. Rules of saying “thank you” D. How to write a thank-you note

B. Will all these things happen?
C. Let’s start with people’s height.
D. Will they still be there in the future?
E. So we can expect our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller.

Ask others.
The people around you may see your talents more clearly. Ask your friends, family, or teachers what they think you’ re good at. You may be surprised by their answers.
Try new things.
Trying new activities can help you discover new talents. You can start by trying something easy, like a one-day pottery (陶艺) class. Last weekend, my friend Tom tried a new sport called Pickleball.
