Daddy's Little Bear

A deep snore rumbled around the rocks as the morning sun flickered into the cave.
Daddy Bear was sound asleep.
Shhh!
Suddenly, four furry paws bounced across the den.
"Wake up!" said Little Bear, lifting Daddy's chin.
Daddy Bear growled gently.
"What time is it?" he mumbled.
"It's playtime!" replied Little Bear.
"Come on, Daddy!"
Slowly, Daddy Bear crawled out from the cave.
"Not so fast," he groaned, as Little Bear skipped across the meadow. Daddy Bear plodded behind, the sun shining on his dark golden fur.
Little Bear took Daddy to the tallest tree in the forest.
"Watch me, Daddy," he said. "I can climb right to the top!"
Daddy Bear watched from the ground as Little Bear scrambled up through the branches.
But uh-oh! Little Bear got stuck!
"Do you need my help to get down?" asked Daddy Bear.
"No," replied Little Bear. "I can do it..."
And he did.
Next, Little Bear led Daddy to the widest part of the lake.
"Watch me, Daddy," he said. "I can jump all the way across!"
And Little Bear hopped,
from one
stepping stone,
to the next.
But uh-oh! Little Bear got stuck!
"Do you need my help to get back?" called Daddy Bear.
"No," replied Little Bear. "I can do it..."
And he did.
Little Bear took Daddy to the deepest part of the river.
"Watch me, Daddy," he said. "I can swim all the way across and back again!"
And Little Bear sprang into the water.
Daddy Bear stretched out on the riverbank. "Little Bear doesn't need me to watch over him," he thought. "I'll just have a quick snooze."
But uh-oh! Little Bear got stuck in a whirlpool! The water swirled round and round, and Little Bear swirled with it. He tried to swim away but his legs weren't strong enough.
"Help!" wailed Little Bear.
Daddy Bear quickly awoke and leaped into the water with a tremendous SPLASH!
"Don't worry, Little Bear!" he yelled. "Daddy's coming!"
But Little Bear's legs were getting tired.
"Grab hold of that branch," said Daddy Bear calmly. "Then climb onto my back."
Little Bear did as Daddy said.
Safely away from the whirlpool, Daddy held his cub in his arms.
"I'm sorry," sobbed Little Bear. "I wanted to show you how big and brave I am."
"I know," said Daddy Bear. "But no matter how big you grow and how brave you become, you will always be Daddy's Little Bear."
The bears clambered out of the water and rolled on to the warm riverbank.
Little Bear snuggled up to Daddy Bear's chest. "I'm glad you're my Daddy," he whispered.
"I'm glad you're my Little Bear," replied Daddy.
And they were both very happy indeed.
Good night, Little Bear.
Little Bear has grown brave and confident and is keen to show Daddy Bear his best new tricks. Just when Daddy Bear thinks he's not needed any more, Little Bear gets into a spot of trouble, and learns that sometimes it's alright to ask for help.
