Wendell Berry was almost30 when he packed up his life as a New York intellectual(知识分子)
and moved to Port Royal,a tiny community in Kentucky where generations of his forebears()
had farmed the land. His friends thought he was mad.But he felt it was his inner calling to record the
history of the place.
Since moving to Port Royal in 1964,he has lived as if he were in the 19th century, writing by
hand and ploughing ()his fields with horses. His eight novels and more than 50 short stories are
usually set in Port William,a stand-in for Port Royal.Nick Offerman,an actor,wanted to
adapt his work for the screen. However, the actor was refused.
In Mr Berry's opinion, humans must take care of the earth that grants them life."The soil is the
greatest connector of lives,"he has written."Without proper care for it we can have no community."
This philosophy dominates his writings. In The Unsettling of America, published in 1977,Mr Berry
criticized the natural damage caused by large agribusinesses. He thinks capitalism has separated
farming from culture and disconnected people from nature.
Mr Berry's fiction explores the decline of values by following Port William's interconnected clans
(as they enter the modem age.In Dismemberment,a short story,Andy Catlett loses a hand to a
harvesting machine and becomes a loner. He sees his withdrawal is mistaken and reconnects with the
town, finding "the wealth of an intimate history"in belonging to "his ancestral place".In Hannah
Coulter,Mr Berry's seventh novel, the main character Hannah Coulter grows old after a sad life and
anticipates loneliness when her children leave to find work in the city.Instead her hope is restored
when her grandson returns to run the farm.
These stories offer insightful advice for readers living through ecological disaster.Though few
can return to farming basics,Mr Berry's messages of building communities, being a good neighbor
and resisting the invitation of modern life are still valuable.
24.Why did Mr Berry's friends think he was mad?
A.He turned down Offerman's request.
B.He moved to live in the countryside.
C.He wrote most of his novels by hand.
D.He gave up his career as an intellectual.

Daniel Matthews is a paramedic(急救医生)in the province of New Brunswick,Canada He keeps
a busy schedule, working 12-hour shifts, sometimes during the day and sometimes at night.
When he and his partner arrive for a shift,"we first have to go through a'truck check'to see that
the ambulance has all the necessary equipment,"Matthews tells Your Hot Job."Once we're ready to
go,we're given a post."Then he and his partner respond to 911 calls made from that area.
Emergency calls require a quick response."When our medical dispatch()center receives the
911 call, they send it to a phone that we carry,"Matthews says. The phone has all the information he
and his partner need about the type of emergency they're responding to.
A paramedic's job is unpredictable. You go from relaxing to rushing to an emergency."It can be
difficult, sitting in a chair one minute, and the next, you will be on the side of a highway doing CPR,"
Matthews says.
As for the emergency,Matthews mentions that"In the winter,we respond to car accidents due to
bad weather or winter sports accidents."In the summer, there are calls about shortness of breath due to
heat,as well as recreational vehicle(旅行房车)accidents.
Matthews never knows what kind of emergency he'll face.So he has to be ready for anything
Being a first responder "comes more naturally for me and many paramedics,as we often remain
calm in these situations,"he says."Not everybody has a personality that can remain calm for a job like
this."A paramedic's work can be stressful.Staying centered and controlling your emotions are
important for this job.It isn't just about saving lives,Matthews says. It's about treating patients with
respect.Staying calm is a big part of being able to help people when they're scared or hurt.

Across the flat plateau of AlUla in Saudi Arabia, shades of gray-brown soil are dotted with areas of
dark rock-and a clearly defined circle of stones.Unmistakably constructed by humans, this
structure,called "standing stone circles"by archaeologists,was built around 7,500 years ago by a
people we barely know for a purpose we have long misunderstood.
In 2019,archaeologists from the University of Western Australia began excavating (these
standing stone circles.Their initial idea was that these were structures built by Neolithic nomads
石器时代的游牧民)for some long-forgotten religious practices.However,excavating at multiple
sites, they found what turned out to be archaeological pay dirt-domestic rubbish. The remains of
discarded animal bones, household tools, and even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles
as Neolithic homes.
Standing stone circles seem to have sprung up around 5,800 to 5,500 B.C.This coincided with a
warmer climate in the region that brought more regular rainfall and a landscape of rich grasses and
trees, good conditions for raising cattle and goats. But these were also good conditions for building
permanent structures.More abundant vegetation meant less pressure to keep moving the animals to
fresh grasslands, which made building homes more worthwhile. This, and the plateau's abundance of
stones, may have encouraged the nomads to stay a while and build.
Excavations of these settlements are revealing something of this people's way of life. They kept
cattle and goats for meat, but continued to hunt and gather to expand their diet with hare, fruits and
nuts. The many grinding()stones found on the sites suggest inhabitants were regularly grinding
grains, but these were likely to be gathered rather than farmed. The plateau sites have also revealed
tools made with materials from the sandstone valleys and jewelry shaped from shells from the Red
Sea-these Neolithic people had a complex culture involving travel and probably exchange.
The revelation overturns many of our assumptions about Neolithic AlUla.Here was a people more
settled and more civilized than history has given them credit for.Their story is just beginning to be
revealed, but already a very different picture of early AIUla is emerging.
32.What did the 2019 excavation finally identify the "standing stone circles"as?
A.Domestic buildings.
B.Religious sites.
C.Rubbish stations.
D.Natural wonders.
33.What was a contributing factor in the building of the standing stone circles?
A.The worsening climate.
B.The richness of plants.
C.The desire to raise more animals.
D.The need to store goods.
34.What is most likely TRUE about Neolithic people's way of life in AlUla?
A.They planted crops and kept cattle and goats.
B.They relied entirely on hunting and gathering for food.
C.They had interactions with other groups
D.They made tools and jewelry purely from local materials.

We all know that studying is boring.Every time you have to read a textbook or review for a test,
you may start thinking of a million things you'd rather be doing like watching
TV.36
Let's go through them,shall we?
Get interested in the topic. To be able to dive into different aspects of any topic, you can't jump
straight into the details.37That's why we should teach children how to
build something in a video game before encouraging them to read through History and Theory of
Architecture.
Change your environment.Having an environment that's helpful to focus can make you enjoy your
work. One tip is to add in things that you enjoy. For example,I have carefully selected some music
that can help me focus.Another thing you can try is to go to your favorite coffee shop or your own
secret spot in the library when you need to study.38
Get a study partner.Studying with a partner is great for making the act of studying less
boring.39_You might distract(分散注意)each other.For example,I tried to study wit池my
roommate, but we usually ended up playing online games.Besides,if you have
some super-smart study partners, they will do all the homework and then you won't leamn anything.
40 Your desire to do a task partly depends on the reward you'll get for finishing it.Your
pre-planned rewards can encourage you to work harder because you know you'll get something fun
after completing it.
A.Instead, you have to be excited about it first.
B.Provide rewards for those who do jobs well.
C:Personally,I've also found that having a good drink next to me helps a lot.
D.However, there are two main points of failure that you have to watch out for.
E.The key to finding study partners is to get those who focus on learning.
F.Create mini-rewards for studying in advance.
G.Today,we'll be covering some tricks you can use to make studying more fun.

Dear Tom,
Recently we've learned how to appreciate poems from English lessons. It is believed that poetry is the combination of “sound” and “sense”. In terms of sound, rhymes and rhythm are two key elements in poetry. Thanks to them, a poem may seem much more easily understood. As for sense, it is the images created and emotions within that make poems beautiful and powerful.
I'm really interested in poems and I wonder if you have other suggestions on appreciating them. For instance, how to get the same feeling as the writer's when reading the poem?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
Lily sat down on the stairs next to him. "I thought what you did was very cool, Mike. I mean, bringing your grandma as a partner. That was very cool," she said. Mike raised his head, asking,“Really?”Lily nodded and explained, “Such a brilliant deed is it to help fulfill your grandma's long-cherished dream.” Plucking up his courage, Mike immediately jumped to his feet and rushed back towards the hall. When he returned with Lily, he instantly spotted Grandma in the crowd, who cast a broad smile at him.Ashamed but determined, Mike walked up firmly towards Alondra.
Holding her hands, Mike cried, “Gran, sorry! Thanks for being my dance partner." “All right,"Alondra grinned at him. “I'm so glad you're back." Then, the two moved slowly to music together with other dancers, immersing themselves in the beautiful melody. The other kids watched their elegant movement with great admiration. That night, both of them enjoyed the sweet night, their heart overflowing with great joy. After the prom came to an end, Alondra whispered to Mike on their way back,"It is one of the best days of my life." A surge of pride welling up in Mike's heart, he was delighted he made the right decision.
