I used to think that life in a small town, the USA, was filled with never-changing styles. I hated that everyone seemed to know everything about everyone else. Everyone seemed to enjoy talking about other people and their lives. I also didn’t like the fact that people seemed very close-minded (思想保守的). I felt like I lost many chances. So it seemed to me that city life would be the opposite.
Then I took my first trip to New York city. I couldn’t wait to experience the city. However, when I arrived in New York city, it wasn’t what I had imagined at all. I knew it was home to thousands of people, but I didn’t expect to see so many people on the street at one time. All the streets were filled with people. I also felt a little surprised to see that everyone was in a hurry and everything moved at such a fast pace (步伐). When I took the subway for the first time, I said hello to a middle-aged woman next to me. She looked at me with dislike and didn’t say a word.
After just one day, I realized how important my small town is to me. Now I appreciate (感激) the warm faces I see every day. I like the feelings of safety and belonging that my town offers. I realized just how much a simple hello does for a stranger — it really can make your day a little better.

During their trip, Gregg and Brooks rode through deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and ancient buildings. On the way they met other bicyclists from all over the world. Be polite. As one traveler told Gregg, “Always remember that nobody wants to fight or cheat a nice person.”

Hip hop started on the streets and in the clubs of New York City in the 1970s, but today many countries have their own kind of hip hop music. Actually, hip hop music is being played in more than 10,000 schools in the USA. Why? Nowadays, a large number of mobile and computer games come out one after another. People have more ways to relax, so few around us seem to mention traditional toys any more, but if you are willing to take time for them, you will find they can not only relax the mind but also develop the brain.
The Luban lock was first created by the well-known Chinese woodworker Lu Ban during the Spring and Autumn period. It was said that Lu used six wooden pieces to make it to test his son’s cleverness. It requires one’s sense of space to move the six pieces apart. Now there are Luban locks made up of nine or more pieces.
The tangram has seven pieces in different shapes. For each puzzle, players need to use all the pieces to make a shape, like an animal, a person, a plant or some other things. To do it, they have to know about space, shapes and sizes. The game was popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the 18th century, it was brought to the West and became popular.
The nine linked rings puzzle is made up of nine metal rings which set on a metal stick. Players have to take all the rings off the stick to win the game. The game appeared as early as the Warring States Period. It is regarded as “king of difficulty” among toys of its kind, which takes 341 steps and needs to use the knowledge of numbers.

My favorite trip showed me that my small town really had its own values in me that I didn’t even know before. I would never have known what a big place my town holds in my heart if I hadn’t taken that trip to New York City.

Many people dream of going on a challenging travel. Most of them keep dreaming; others make it happen. Gregg Bleakney dreamed of going bike riding from North America to South America after finishing a pleasant bike ride. So did Gregg’s friend, Brooks Allen.
To pay for the trip, the two friends worked for years. When they were on the road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in cheap hotels. In many places, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.
During their trip, Gregg and Brooks rode through deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and ancient buildings. On the way they met other bicyclists from all over the world. Brooks had to return to the USA near the bottom of South America and Gregg continued without him. In May 2007, Gregg finally reached his goal. He traveled twelve countries and finished the 30, 500-kilometer trip.
Gregg and Brooks kept a record of their trips in a blog (博客). The trips taught both men a lot about traveling. Here is some of Gregg’s advice:
Travel light. The less baggage (行李) you have, the less you’ll worry about.
Be flexible. Don’t plan everything. Always be ready for something unexpected. Then you’ll be more relaxed and happy, even when there are challenges along the way.
Be polite. As one traveler told Gregg, “Always remember that nobody wants to fight or cheat a nice person.”
Anything worth doing requires time, energy and action. There is no exception (例外). If you hold on to your dream, you can make it like Gregg and Brooks and have fun while you’re at it.
