As I walked along the Edgware Road, I felt like the world was closing in on me. All the sounds I usually don’t think about were gone. I had entered a quiet world. This strange experience happened a few weeks ago when I agreed to be deaf for a day to support the work of the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. I’m an ambassador for this charity.
When I took a taxi to my manager Gavin’s office, I couldn’t hear what the taxi driver was saying to me. We couldn’t communicate. Then, when I got to the office, I had to ring the intercom five times because I couldn’t hear a response.
Everybody said I was shouting at them. I just didn’t know how loudly I was talking because I couldn’t hear my own voice. Gavin kept telling me my phone was ringing, but I didn’t notice. I was too busy trying to focus on reading his lips. And when he tried to tell me a code to put into my phone, I had to keep asking him to repeat it more slowly. Finally, he got frustrated and said, “Just give me the phone! ” I was really surprised.
People didn’t want to repeat things, so they kept trying to do things for me that I could easily do myself. I felt powerless.
Being deaf for a day was really tiring. I had to work so hard to “listen” with my eyes, get people’s attention, and use my other senses to make up for not being able to hear. It was a big, exhausting task.
Before that experience, I didn’t realize how much I took my hearing for granted or understood the challenges that deaf people face. If a deaf person asks you to repeat something, never think, “It’s not important.” It is important.
6. Why did the author go deaf for a day?
A. To test her hearing. B. To support a charity.
C. To enjoy silence. D. To have an adventure.
7. What problem did the author meet in the taxi?
A. She lost her way. B. She shouted at the driver.
C. She couldn’t hear the driver. D. She took the wrong taxi.
8. What can we infer from Gavin’s reaction?
A. He was impatient with the author. B. He was good at lip-reading.
C. He could communicate well with deaf people. D. He knew sign language.
9. What did the author mainly rely on to “listen” during the day?
A. Her sense of touch. B. Her eyes. C. Her sense of smell. D. Her mobile phone.
10. What did the author feel during the experience?
A. Excited and curious. B. Tired and powerless.
C. Happy and relaxed. D. Angry and confused.

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.
Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.
E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.
The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun, see a great movie perhaps — and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.
With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.
We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.
11. What does the writer spend most weekends and evenings doing?
A. Working at home. B. Working at the office.
C. Spending time with friends. D. Watching movies.
12. Why does the writer prefer e-mail over phone calls?
A. It is faster and cheaper. B. It is more personal and detailed.
C. It is convenient for group sharing. D. It is more fun and interactive.
13. What does the writer mention about the Internet and traditional communication?
A. The Internet replaces traditional ways. B. The Internet adds to traditional ways.
C. The Internet is less effective than traditional ways. D. The Internet is only for young people.
14. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To explain how to use the Internet.
B. To describe the writer’s joy of using the latest technology.
C. To tell the advantages and usefulness of the Internet.
D. To introduce basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet.
15 What is the best title for this passage?
A Computer: New Technological Advance. B. Internet: New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship.
C. Computers Have Been Easier to Use. D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication.

15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Computer: New Technological Advance. B. Internet: New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship.
C. Computers Have Been Easier to Use. D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication.

If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.(互联网也让与一群朋友分享想法变得轻而易举。 以及第五段“With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.(有了电子邮件,你只需在自己方便的时候,写一条关于你经历的信息,然后把它发给所有你认为可能感兴趣的朋友。

根据前文“You’ll make new friends in each stage of your life. Some of them will come and go, while others will last for the rest of your life.(你会在人生的每个阶段交到新朋友。其中一些会来了又走,而另一些会伴随你的余生)”结合下文陈述持长期友谊的好处,以及如何保持长期的友谊,所以空处应是引出长期朋友的话题,所以A项“Lifelong friendships are what most people desire.(一生的友谊是大多数人所渴望的)”符合文意。故选A项。
根据前文“There are many benefits of having strong friendships. According to experts, many people regret not keeping friendships going and end up living a life with no close friends or even enduring mental and physical sufferings.(拥有牢固的友谊有很多好处。据专家称,许多人后悔没有维持友谊,最终过着没有亲密朋友的生活,甚至忍受着精神和身体上的痛苦)”以及后文“People who have healthy friendships tend to enjoy life more and may even live longer.(拥有健康友谊的人往往更享受生活,甚至可能活得更长)”可知,本段主要在讲保持健康友谊的好处和重要性,所以E项“So making time for your friendships is vital to a healthy life.(因此,为友谊腾出时间对健康生活至关重要)”符合文意,起到承上启下的作用。故选E项。
根据后文“There are a lot of ways to make new friends that can stay with you for the rest of your life. Look for people who share things with you. If you have kids, join a mom’s group, or sign your child up for classes where you’ll naturally meet other parents.(有很多方法可以交到可以陪伴你一生的新朋友。寻找和你有共同爱好的人。如果你有孩子,加入一个妈妈的小组,或者为你的孩子报班,在那里你自然会遇到其他父母)”可知,此处是在讲如何交到可以陪伴你一生的新朋友。所以C项“If you are lacking in good friendships, it’s not too late.(如果你缺乏好的友谊,现在还不晚)”符合文意,引出下文。故选C项。
根据前文“If you have kids, join a mom’s group, or sign your child up for classes where you’ll naturally meet other parents.(如果你有孩子,加入一个妈妈的小组,或者为你的孩子报班,在那里你自然会遇到其他父母)”以及后文“You share your career and will have a lot to talk about while also having built-in opportunities to spend time with each other.(你们分享自己的事业,会有很多可聊的话题,同时也有内在的机会花时间在彼此身上)”可知,上文陈述和父母交朋友,下文陈述分享自己的事业,由此推知,我们还可以与同事交朋友。所以D项“You can also make friends with people you work with.(你也可以和同事交朋友)”符合文意。故选D项。
根据前文“Sometimes it’s a good idea to let a friendship go, even if you’ve been friends for a long time. If one party isn’t making an effort to keep things going, it can lead to feelings of hurt and betrayal, and it might be time to let things cool off and pursue other friendships. (有时候,结束一段友谊是个好主意,即使你们已经做了很长时间的朋友。如果一方不努力维持关系,可能会导致受伤和背叛的感觉,可能是时候让事情冷静下来,追求其他友谊了)”可知,此处是在讲必要时结束一段友谊。由此推知,空处陈述这样做的原因。所以G项“While this can be sad, it can actually improve your quality of life.(虽然这可能令人难过,但它实际上可以提高你的生活质量)”符合文意,且与下文“Besides, it can encourage you to focus on the partnerships that are healthy and where both of you are committed to keeping it going for your entire life.(此外,它可以鼓励你专注于健康的伙伴关系,以及你们两人都致力于终生保持这种关系的伙伴关系)”构成并列关系。故选G项。
