It was half past seven on Monday morning. Jay Stone got out of bed. He did some quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood (好莱坞), but with his beautiful brown eyes, his looks could turn girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste (牙膏) ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. He spent hours doing exercise in the gym, and it worked out well.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. When he sat, he was as tall as almost anyone. But when he stood, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls. He was one of the shortest boys in his class.
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs!
Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But in fact, his legs could do a lot. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the school football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby (短粗的) legs. Yeah, that’s me.” he said to himself with a little smile.

After college, I started working in an office and began to gain weight (增重). I would eat sweet bread and drink coffee on my way to work. I loved to eat snacks during work. I went out for lunch every day and ate all night after work. Within two years, I gained about 34 kilograms. I was always unhappy with my body and felt uncomfortable in it.
In September 2022, I went to a work event. The host asked us to write down the 10 happiest and saddest things in our lives so far that year. I couldn’t think of anything happy, but I wrote down 15 sad things. That made all my friends amazed. Most of them had something to do with my weight or my lack of confidence. That day, I knew I had to make a change.
The next day, I started my weight-loss journey. ________ For example, I added milk instead of creamer to my coffee. I started to make healthy lunches at home and bring them to work. Slowly, I adapted (适应) to a diet of mostly lean meats (瘦肉) and vegetables.
At the same time, I started exercising daily. I would, for example, take the stairs instead of the lift. I also started working out at the gym and at home.
After three years, I finally lost more than 30 kilograms of weight.

If you grew up in an unusual family and felt limited (受限的), how would you change your life story? In the book Educated, the US writer Tara Westover shows us how she deals with (处理) hard times.

With hard work, Westover went to college, and later got a PhD (博士学位) in History at Cambridge University.
Education changed her, her life, her way of thinking and even her luck. After reading the book, I come to feel the deepest thanks for my own family, and the education I got. Education allows girls like Westover to fly like birds toward their own goals. It allows us to get a different view, find new experiences, better understand others and explore the wider world. A:

I feel your pain. When I was in school, I was very overweight and had a really hard time. I felt so low about myself at times. And I know, for girls that can be even harder. But I’ll share what helped me and maybe it can help you too.

What I’m trying to say is that if you can be proud of yourself and love yourself for your good qualities (素养), other people can’t hurt you. Be proud of your good points and hold your head up high. And I’m sure you’re beautiful too in your own way, inside and out.

At the same time, I started exercising daily. I would, for example, take the stairs instead of the lift. I also started working out at the gym and at home.
After three years, I finally lost more than 30 kilograms of weight.

Dear David,

Junjun
A:
Dear Junjun,
I feel your pain. When I was in school, I was very overweight and had a really hard time. I felt so low about myself at times. And I know, for girls that can be even harder. But I’ll share what helped me and maybe it can help you too.
When I got to about 13 years old, I discovered an after-school drama (戏剧) club. I was good at drama and it brought me out of my shell (突破自我). People started to see there was more to me, and for the first time in my life, I started to become popular, overweight or not.
What I’m trying to say is that if you can be proud of yourself and love yourself for your good qualities (素养), other people can’t hurt you. Be proud of your good points and hold your head up high. And I’m sure you’re beautiful too in your own way, inside and out.
