I never paid any attention to the girl because she was so common, even ugly-dark skin with a big face and small eyes that never seemed to open. Her grades were also poor, and the words she wrote were messy and hard to read. All the teachers paid little attention to her. Her seat was in the last row, near the corner, as if she were in her own small, silent world.
One day in class, I let the students study on their own while I walked around to answer their questions. When I went to the last row, I suddenly smelled a fragrance (香气) of flowers, thick and sweet.
After searching, I found a small white flower, like a white butterfly, falling in her hair. It was gardenia (栀子花), my favorite flower. I couldn’t help bowing my head to her and said “Hi”. Hearing my voice, she looked up at me in surprise. When she saw a smile in my eyes, her face quickly turned red and she closed her mouth in embarrassment. At that moment, shed smiled beautifully. For the rest of the time, I found her sitting upright and seriously doing the test. She even raised her hand to ask me a question she didn’t understand.
The next day I found a gardenia was in my textbook. I guessed it was from her. Looking at her, I met her smiling eyes. I smiled back at her to show my thanks. She was nervous, then smiled widely. The other students didn’t know why and just laughed.
We kept the secret between us. And what surprised me was she became much more lively, loved to sing and dance, and her classmates also liked her. Her grades improved so rapidly that all the teachers who taught her could no longer ignore her. A few years later, she unexpectedly entered a famous university.
Sometimes, you don’t need a whole garden; just a gardenia flower is enough for a lifetime.

Have you ever had to give a speech in front of your class? How did it make you feel? Did you have butterflies in your stomach? Did your heart beat fast? Did your hands get all wet? Did your mouth feel dry? Did you forget what you wanted to say? If so, you are experiencing stage fright (怯场).
Stage fright happens when you have to do something in front of a large crowd, like giving a speech or putting on a play. Many people get stage fright, even famous actors, singers and players. They also feel nervous when they have to perform in public.
The good news is that there are ways to deal with stage fright. One of the best things to do is to get ready. It’s easier to feel sure of yourself if you know what you’ll say well. You can practice your speech or performance over and over until you have it down pat (了如指掌).
Another piece of advice is to take some deep breaths before you step out in front of the crowd. Breathing slowly and deeply can help you relax. You can also give yourself a talk that cheers you up. Positive (积极的) self-talk can go a long way.
It’s important to remember that everyone gets stage fright sometimes. So don’t be hard on yourself. Just hug those “butterflies”, take a deep breath, and give your all. When everything is over, you’ll be proud of yourself for having faced your fears, and you will feel as cool as a cucumber (泰然自若)!
