The 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the 1983 Westfield Sydney-Melbourne Ultra-marathon, which took runners days to finish, in Australia.
When Cliff showed up in the race, he stuck out like a sore thumb in his everyday clothes different from the other professional runners’, quickly attracting the attention of reporters present.
“I grew up on a farm where we couldn’t afford horses. Whenever the storms would roll in, I’d have to go out and round up the sheep,” Cliff told reporters. “Sometimes I’d have to run those sheep for two or three days, but I’d always catch them. I believe I can run this race.” No one actually believed him. Most competitors were in their 20s and early 30s, with years of training and marathon experience.
On the first day of the race, Cliff was left far behind. But he had one advantage that no one had expected. He didn’t plan on stopping until he reached the finish line while all the others had been training to run for 18 hours a day and then stop and sleep for the other six.
When dawn broke, the other runners were shocked to learn that the old farmer was in the lead and that they would have to catch up with him; Although running slowly, he was the first to cross the finish line and received 10, 000 as a prize. But he kept none of the prize and donated it to the homeless.
Cliff continued to run. In 1997, he set out to raise funds for homeless kids by running all 16,000 kilometers of the Australian coastline. In 2000, Cliff achieved a world age record in a six-day race in Victoria. Cliff Young died at 81, but his legend lives on,

D. His clothes were not like those of professional runners.
6. How did Cliff Young overtake other runners during the race?
A. He ran faster than others in short sprints.
B. He used his knowledge of the route to take shortcuts.
C. He maintained continuous movement while others slept.
D. He received special equipment from the organizers.
7. What can we learn from Cliff Young’s story?
A. Age is a key factor in determining one’s success in sports.
B Success only belongs to those with professional training.
C. Persistence and determination can lead to great achievements.
D. Donating money is the most important thing in life.
C
Nothing feels more like summer than a neighborhood barbecue. But the annoyance of summer gatherings remains: the buzzing (嗡嗡声) of mosquitoes around our ears.
“The buzzing in your ears is mostly just a side effect of the mosquito’s wings beating,” said Michael Riehle, a professor at the University of Arizona. "The sound doesn’t have a long range, so you notice it most when they are flying around your ears.”
“From a distance, mosquitoes track carbon dioxide that we give out.” Riehle told Live Science. “They fly back and forth to follow that concentration level back to the source.”
But in fact, that buzzing you hear is likely from a female mosquito. That’s because male and female mosquitoes lead very different lives. The males typically hang out and feed on the sweetest part of flowers; they couldn’t care less about the humans wandering about. The females, however, need to find a blood meal in order to have enough energy to produce eggs.
As she approaches, the female mosquito zeros in on body heat and the carbon dioxide to land on the victim. The female mosquito uses taste sensors on her feet to determine whether the human, or any blood-bearing animal, is adequate to tap for her next meal.
But while we feel mosquitoes buzzing around our ears, Riehle noted that most mosquitoes are not attracted to our heads. Rather, these bloodsuckers may be more likely to seek out our feet, which have bacteria that give off attractive smell to mosquitoes. However, most people probably don’t notice a mosquito buzzing around their ankles, he said.
Another study found that female mosquitoes were more attracted to men who had less diverse bacteria on their skin than to men with more diverse skin bacteria; these bloodsuckers also prefer those who wear dark colors, such as black.
8. How do mosquitoes primarily locate humans from a distance?
A. By detecting body heat radiation
B. By tracking carbon dioxide emissions
C. By following light reflections
D. By sensing vibrations in the air
9. What biological feature helps female mosquitoes assess blood suitability?
A. Taste receptors located on their feet
B. Antennae equipped with thermal sensors
C. Specialized vision for detecting skin tones
D. Wings capable of detecting blood flow
10. Why might mosquitoes be more active around ankles despite buzzing near ears?
A. Ankles produce higher-pitched buzzing sounds
B. Foot bacteria emit chemically attractive odors
C. Dark-colored shoes attract their attention
D Blood vessels are closer to the skin there
11. Which combination of factors makes a person most vulnerable to mosquito bites?
A. High body temperature and floral perfume
B. Frequent movement and sugary diet
C. Monotonic skin bacteria black clothing
D. Alcohol consumption and sweat secretion
D
Destructive earthquakes rock the world from time to time. Nothing can be done to prevent them from striking. The best way to ease these future disasters is to draw maps of the underworld, recording every fault and tracking its behavior.
To create those maps, researchers employ little machines that sense and record all sorts of vibrations (震动).
This work, historically, has been extremely careful and sometimes inaccurate. When Zachary Ross, an assistant geophysics professor, started in the field in the early 2010s, he sought a new way forward. “Even the best computer programs at the time missed certain earthquakes. There had to be a better way,” he says. He conducted the study in California which is so geologically active and there were more data than human experts alone could reasonably handle.
In 2017 Ross started to focus on tiny quakes. They might be harmless, but that doesn’t make them unimportant — their waves can clarify each fault they pass through, including the more precarious, stress-loaded ones that may one day crack and set off a disaster. Ross and his colleagues set an algorithm (算法) upon the seismic (地震的) record. The algorithm quickly identified nearly two million previously hidden tiny quakes.
However, his program could only find earthquakes in the seismic record that it was taught to recognize. So Ross turned to more advanced tools: self-learning programs, software that could take preexisting information and make predictions about the future-in this case, what a vastly wider variety of earthquakes might sound like. Very quickly, these programs found all sorts of unfamiliar-sounding quakes — later confirmed by human scientists. “You just see so many things that were completely missed,” Ross says.
These AI learning programs can also be used to boost the speed and accuracy (精确度) of earthquake early-warning systems — largely autonomous programs that forecast threats to life and property in the moments after an earthquake starts and send people emergency text messages before seismic waves reach them. But for all their promise, AI programs won’t replace human scientists. “They’re just tools,” Ross says — ones that in time, he suspects, will become as ordinary as seismometers (地震仪) themselves.
12. Why did Zachary Ross focus on studying tiny earthquakes in 2017?
A. They directly cause major property damage
B. Their seismic waves reveal stressed fault conditions
C. They are easier to detect with traditional seismometers
D. They provide data for early-warning system development
13. What breakthrough did self-learning programs achieve in earthquake detection?
A. Predicting exact earthquake time weeks in advance
B. Collecting seismic data 100 times faster than humans
C. Identifying previously unrecognized earthquake patterns
D. Eliminating the need for field seismometer deployment
14. How do AI programs enhance earthquake early-warning systems?
A. By preventing earthquakes from occurring
B. Through accelerating threat assessment accuracy
C. Via automatic building reinforcement mechanisms
D. Using satellite imagery to track tectonic shifts
15. What is Ross’s fundamental view on AI programs in seismology?
A. They function as supplementary detection tools
B. They will soon replace human geophysicists
C Their algorithms can independently conduct research
D. Their development should prioritize cost reduction

BE A GOOD TOURIST
Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.
One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited a destination. Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Oomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourist sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”. ____16____ If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.
Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life. ____17____ For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students, and disturbing their studies. Another example is Sanlifun, a neighbourhood in Beijing, China. Some tourists love to party there late into the night, making it difficult for locals to sleep. ____18____ Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
____19____. However, The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without thinking of local traffic laws, and many more. ____20____ Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible. Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing your country to the rest of the world.
A. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate.
B. Travelers should always follow local customs and traditions.
C. The only way to solve the problem of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one!
D. For instance, some tourists take photos of locals without permission.
E. I have three words for people like this: please stop it.
F. Tourists should avoid crowded places to reduce their impact.
G. These actions show disrespect to both the environment and local culture.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi. One time, I was called at midnight to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for one light in a window.
I walked to the door and knocked. After a long wait, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took her suitcase and gave her my arm. We walked slowly to the street. She kept thanking me for my kindness.
“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I try to treat my passengers how I want my mother treated.”
“You’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered.
“I don’t mind,”she said. I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).”
I saw her eyes shining with tears.
“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly turned off the meter (计价器). “What road do you want me to take?” I asked.
For hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighbourhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she asked me to just slow down while she sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the sun was coming up, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the hospice. As we pulled up, two nurses were waiting for us.
They helped her into a wheelchair.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
“How much do I owe you?” she asked me, reaching for her purse.

B By tracking carbon dioxide emissions
C. By following light reflections
D. By sensing vibrations in the air
9. What biological feature helps female mosquitoes assess blood suitability?
A. Taste receptors located on their feet
B. Antennae equipped with thermal sensors
C. Specialized vision for detecting skin tones
D. Wings capable of detecting blood flow
10. Why might mosquitoes be more active around ankles despite buzzing near ears?
A. Ankles produce higher-pitched buzzing sounds
B. Foot bacteria emit chemically attractive odors
C. Dark-colored shoes attract their attention
D. Blood vessels are closer to the skin there
11. Which combination of factors makes a person most vulnerable to mosquito bites?
A. High body temperature and floral perfume
B. Frequent movement and sugary diet
C. Monotonic skin bacteria black clothing
D. Alcohol consumption and sweat secretion
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. C

B Their seismic waves reveal stressed fault conditions
C. They are easier to detect with traditional seismometers
D. They provide data for early-warning system development
13. What breakthrough did self-learning programs achieve in earthquake detection?
A. Predicting exact earthquake time weeks in advance
B. Collecting seismic data 100 times faster than humans
C. Identifying previously unrecognized earthquake patterns
D. Eliminating the need for field seismometer deployment
14. How do AI programs enhance earthquake early-warning systems?
A. By preventing earthquakes from occurring
B. Through accelerating threat assessment accuracy
C. Via automatic building reinforcement mechanisms
D. Using satellite imagery to track tectonic shifts
15. What is Ross’s fundamental view on AI programs in seismology?
A. They function as supplementary detection tools
B. They will soon replace human geophysicists
C. Their algorithms can independently conduct research
D. Their development should prioritize cost reduction
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A

47. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I saw her eyes shining with tears

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“How much do I owe you?” she asked me, reaching for her purse. I shook my head and said, “Nothing. It was my pleasure to be with you on this journey.” She looked at me with a mixture of surprise and gratitude in her eyes. “You’ve been so kind to an old woman like me. You made my last night memorable,” she said softly. I bent down and gave her a gentle hug. “You take care, ma’am,” I whispered. She nodded, and then the nurses wheeled her away. I watched her go, hoping that she would find peace in the hospice.
As I drove back alone, the first rays of sunlight bathed the city. I thought about the woman and her story. It made me realize how important it is to show kindness and compassion to others, especially those who are in need. I felt a sense of fulfillment that I had been able to bring a little bit of joy and comfort to her in her final hours. From that day on, I made a promise to myself to always be more patient and understanding with my passengers. And whenever I see an elderly person, I will remember that woman and the impact she had on me. The experience changed me, and I knew that I would never forget her.
