A
Years ago, I feared traveling alone. But after taking several work trips on my own, I’ve realized traveling alone is not only easy but also fantastic.
Over the years, I’ve realized traveling with someone is all about compromise (妥协). You have to agree on which museums to visit, where to eat dinner and what time to start the day. When I travel alone, I don’t have to give up anything. If I want to wake up at 11 a. m., I can. If I realize I need a rest at noon, I don’t need to explain myself to anyone. I found the freedom to do whatever I want without someone saying yes is the best part of traveling alone.
Before traveling alone, I thought I’d hate it, for I would not be able to share experiences with someone else, but I learned the opposite is true for me. When I’m in a new city by myself, I get to stay in my own head and experience something without someone else’s ideas troubling mine. I can listen to music, read a book or find somewhere I can just sit and think. When I travel with another person or a group, these moments are few.
Although I seldom feel lonely on trips, I sometimes turn to social media to keep me connected with people. I found that taking a photo or a video and posting it on the Internet can start a conversation with friends. But I learned through my travels that I value connecting with the new place more than connecting with old friends.
Traveling alone not only helped me have confidence, but also helped better my mental health.
36. When did the writer change his view of traveling alone?
A. Before connecting with old friends.
B. After turning to social media.

D. After taking some work trips.
37. Which was the best part of traveling alone for the writer?

B. He prefers traveling with others nowadays.
C. He used to like sharing traveling experiences.
D. He finds it easy to sit and think when traveling in groups.
39. How did the writer keep in touch with his friends when traveling alone?
A. By making phone calls. B. By sending e-mails.
C. By posting photos online. D. By introducing new places.
40. What would be the suitable title for the text?
A. Enjoy Traveling Alone B. Go Traveling Online

As they were looking up at the ceiling, they saw that there were thousands of bats hanging there. They were so afraid that they started to quickly walk toward the other side of the room. They tried another way because they thought it was not safe to go back through the room with the bats.
However, as they walked on, they found they were lost. Becky started to cry wildly.
“Surely, your mother will see tonight that you haven’t come back,” Tom said. “She’ll send people out to look for vou.”
Becky thought for a moment and then started to cry even harder. “Oh, Tom. She thinks that I’m sleeping at the Harpers tonight. She won’t find that I’m missing until late the next morning!”
“Alright, Becky. Let’s not cry. We should just keep walking. As long as we walk, there’s hope.”
So they walked with no idea where they were going. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle in order to save it. And so much of the time they walked in total darkness. Tom tried calling out for help several times but never got any answer in return.
Tom had some kite string (风筝线) in his pocket. He took it out and tied one end to a rock. Then he told Becky to sit and wait for him. Tom lit the candle again and made his way down one of the roads. He didn’t get far when the floor in front of him suddenly dropped fast into the black world below. He stretched (伸长) his arm to feel how deep the drop was. I believe in the power of inspiration(激励). I like playing basketball. However, when I played in the boy’s club, I didn’t think I could do well in it. If somebody passed the ball to me, I would quickly pass the ball to another teammate. I dared (敢于) not shoot the ball myself. I was afraid that I would miss the shot and be laughed at by my teammates. I watched basketball games and felt the excitement of the players right after they made the shot. “Those feelings wouldn’t be the same,” I thought.
One day, I asked for some advice from my best friend about what team I should join. “Should I try out for basketball or wrestling?” She asked, “Don’t you love basketball?” I sadly replied, “Yeah, but I was never good at it.” She looked at me with disbelief, “Yes, you are!” I looked at her skeptically, “Am I?” Then she said these words, “If I love something, I will keep doing what I love to do so that I can get better.” Her words inspired me.
I decided to join another club to play basketball. What my friend had said stood in my mind. My teammate passed the ball to me. I received the ball and took a shot. I made it. As soon as I made the shot, I felt the excitement of an NBA player. My successful play was unforgettable. I’ll never forget that day.
I believe that everybody has something he or she loves, and inspiration will lead you there if you have trouble. People need to be inspired to find their passion. Their passion will most likely help them to achieve greater things in life, and to be the best people they can be.

49.What was his best friend’s opinion toward playing basketball?

How did you spend your winter holiday? Were you morning till night? Well, you’re not alone. 51 According to a new survey, on average Chinese spend five and a half hours on the Internet every day.
52 For many people (not just in China), the answer is just watching short videos and checking out new memes. Instead of helping us relax, this low-value content messes up our thinking. The Oxford Word of the Year, “brain rot (脑腐)”, best describes this global headache.
Watching these types of short videos and memes is like eating your favourite snacks. 53 It’s also an easy way to kill time why plan an outing or take up a new hobby since you can have “fun” without getting up from your sofa?
But this “easy fun” comes at a price. The more time we spend on our screens, the less real-life joy we experience. 54
It’s time to bring back “voluntary fun’”. Go outside with your friends or family and enjoy the beauty of nature. 55 Bathe in the warm sunlight. Brighten your day with pleasant birdsong. Just don’t let your screens take over your free time.
A.Breathe in the fresh air.
B.How did we get here?
C.Once you start, it’s hard to stop.
D.What do you usually do when you’re online?
E.Many people are now online nearly all the time.
F.Over time, we feel like our lives are getting more and more boring.
【答案】51.E 52.D 53.C 54.F 55.A

52.根据“For many people (not just in China), the answer is just watching short videos and checking out new memes.”可知,此处提问人们上网时通常做什么,选项D“你上网时通常做什么?”符合语境。故选D。
53.根据“Watching these types of short videos and memes is like eating your favourite snacks.”可知,此处用吃零食来比喻看短视频,说明一旦开始就很难停下,选项C“一旦你开始,就很难停下来。”符合语境。故选C。
54.根据“The more time we spend on our screens, the less real-life joy we experience.”可知,此处表示花太多时间在屏幕上会导致现实生活中的快乐减少,进而可能会觉得生活越来越无聊,选项F“随着时间的推移,我们会觉得生活越来越无聊。”符合语境。故选F。
55.根据“Go outside with your friends or family and enjoy the beauty of nature.”可知,此处建议人们走到户外去享受大自然,接下来应该会继续描述大自然的美好,选项A“呼吸新鲜空气。”符合语境。故选A。
第三节 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共5小题;56 - 59每小题2.5分,第60小题3分,满分13分)
E
A total of 23 spotted seals (斑海豹) were put back into the waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. Like migratory (迁徙的) birds, they appear around October every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often considered as the “panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached around 2,000, while the global population is between 400,000 and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources. They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.
56.Where were the 23 spotted seals put back into the sea?
57.What is the other name of the spotted seal?
58.With China’s protection, what has happened to the spotted seals in Chinese waters?
59.What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 5 refer to (指的是)?
60.As a student, what can you do to protect wildlife?
【答案】56.Off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province.

59.The Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands.

A
Years ago, I feared traveling alone.
C. Before getting information from books.

While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand. Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then appeared. It was the face of Injun Joe.
