When Afghanistan banned girls over 12 from singing publicly in March 2021, Nila, then14, refused to stay silent. In response to the controversial decision, she recorded a protest song, which went viral as part of the #IAmMySong movement, and then the policy was reversed soon afterwards.
Nearly four years later, her relentless advocacy earned her the 2024 International Children’s Peace Prize, honoring her dedicating her teenage years to fighting regressive restrictions against Afghan women and girls. “If women’s rights are suffering in one part of the world, the whole world will suffer in one way or another, ” Nil a stated before the award ceremony. “This is something that is left unrecognized when we talk about girls’ education in Afghanistan because we think of it as a problem just in Afghanistan. ‘Oh, it’ s just a country over there; it’ s far from our country, ‘ ” she added.
Despite the incredible hardship of leaving her homeland, Nila’s commitment to fighting for Afghan girls never ceased. Nila, now 17 years old, after fleeing to Canada, has worked to provide a voice for other Afghan girls through her organization, Her Story, a platform for girls from Afghanistan to share their stories and raise their voices.
“We were all impressed and amazed by the spirit of Nila,” said Marc Dullaert, the founder and chair of the KidsRights Foundation. “She had the courage to put her song online, to initiate and start the singing movement. But also the resilience after fleeing with her family to Canada, she still kept on advocating for Afghan girls, not only in Canada but also worldwide.”
“The resilience of Afghan girls motivates me,” she said. “With so much restriction and limitation they’re still going; they’re still holding onto that sense of hope. I think I should be the last person who thinks of giving up.” Nila is now in the process of applying for university and hopes to study law.
4. What did Nila do in response to Afghanistan’s ban on girls?

Wild animals are equipped with a variety of techniques to avoid becoming lunch for a bigger animal, also known as a predator (捕食者) in nature. The most well-known methods include the classic fight and flight as well as freeze.
A team of researchers wondered whether closeness to people might impact those survival strategies. “We often see that animals are more tolerant around us in urban areas, but we don’t really know why.” says evolutionary biologist Dan Blumstein. “Is it individual plasticity, meaning individuals change their fear of us and that leads to tolerance? Or can there be an evolutionary factor involved?”
To find out, Blumstein and his colleagues combined information from 173 studies of over 100 species, including mammals, birds, fish and even mollusks. It turns out that regardless of evolutionary ancestry, the animals react in a similar way to life among humans: they lose their anti-predator characteristics. That pattern is especially pronounced for plant-eating animals and for social species. This behavioral change is perhaps unsurprising when it’s intentional, the result of domestication or controlled breeding. But it turns out that urbanization alone results in a similar change, though around three times more slowly.
The main point is: we’re essentially domesticating animals by urbanization. We’re selecting for the same sorts of characteristics that we would if we were actually trying to domesticate them. If the urbanization process helps animals better co-exist with people, it could be to their benefit. But if it makes them more defenseless to their nonhuman predators, it could be a real problem. Either way, these results mean that city living has enough of an influence on wild animals so that evolutionary processes kick in. Those reductions in anti-predator characteristics become encoded in their genes. We’re changing the population genetics one way or another.
What the researchers now wonder is whether the mere presence of tourists in less urbanized areas can cause similar changes in wild animals. If so, serious questions exist for the idea of ethical, welfare-oriented eco-tourism. If we wish to help animals keep their anti-predator defenses, the researchers say, we might have to intentionally expose animals to predators. It’s just yet one other way that we’re changing the world around us.
8. The research conducted by Blumstein is aimed at _________.
A. explaining why animals exhibit increased tolerance to human presence.
B. exploring the mystery of animals’ well-known anti-predator behaviors.
C. studying how nearness to humans affects animals’ survival techniques.
D. comparing the roles of individual plasticity and evolutionary factors.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Domesticated animals in urban areas are less tolerant to humans.
B. Urbanization strengthens animals’ natural defenses against predators.
C. Wild animals living in cities rarely lose their anti-predator characteristics.
D. Plant-eaters and social species have weaker defenses against predators in cities.
10. What should animal caretakers do to prepare a rescued monkey for return to the wild?
A. Deliberately adapt the monkey to environments with predators.
B. Repeatedly expose the monkey to urban environments.
C. Train the monkey to tolerate human presence occasionally.
D. Intentionally keep predators’ defensive strategies.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To advocate for the coexistence of animals and humans in cities.
B To remind people to help animals survive properly.
C. To criticize the ethical, welfare-oriented eco-tourism.
D. To entertain people with a surprising scientific finding.
D
Mason Currey’s interest in rituals grew out of his inability to write without distraction. Currey, a Los Angeles-based writer, became fascinated with the working habits of famous writers whose days were seemingly occupied by creative work. How were they so devoted and consistent with their craft? What magical brain powers did they possess that he didn’t?
In 2013, Currey published Daily Rituals: How Artists Work, a compendium (汇编) of mini-biographies that documented the unusual habits and lives of artists. It turns out, even great writers like Franz Kafka and Virginia Woolf found writing to be an arduous task. What made the work a little bit easier, he discovered, was their commitment to a daily ritual. This practice, however, is not exclusive to the creative class, nor does — or should — it only operate in the realm of work. With life returning to normal, rituals, whether personal or shared, can help enrich people’s lives.
Anyone can devise a simple ritual and integrate it into their day, week, or even month. This encourages a mindful approach to basic tasks. It can be as simple as taking a walk at a certain time of day, baking bread, or cleaning your space. You might not feel moved or changed by a ritual the first time you attempt one; you might be self-conscious or distracted. This is where repetition or experimentation could help. Currey’s morning ritual for writing, for example, starts with him waking up at 5: 30 am. He goes to the kitchen, pours himself a cup of coffee and sits down to write at his desk with the hood of his sweatshirt pulled up. Some days, the process feels more like a slog than others, but the early morning habit installs a sense of calm. The repetition ensures an easy transition to his desired writerly mindset.
Currey describes a ritual as an activity that eases a person into a focused mindset, a state that is beneficial for thinking, creating, or just being. “Rituals create and mark a transition towards a different kind of mental or emotional state, ” he said. This can look different for every person, but it’s helpful to approach rituals as a calming, meditative activity that allows the participant to be physically and mentally present.
12. What initially sparked Mason Currey’s interest in rituals?
A. His desire to become a famous writer. B. His struggle to write without distractions.
C. His fascination with the lives of artists. D. His need to document unusual habits.
13. What can be learned about daily rituals from paragraph 2?
A. They are only effective for famous artists and writers.
B. They work miracles for nothing except people’s work.
C. They can benefit people beyond the creative field.
D They lose their value once life returns to normal.
14. How does repetition contribute to practicing rituals?
A. It helps individuals overcome initial distractions. B. It guarantees immediate emotional transition.
C It replaces the need for attempting new habits. D. It makes rituals integrated into daily routines.
15. According to Curry, what’s the key function of rituals?
A. To replace traditional meditation practices. B. To enhance creative thinking through repetition.
C. To help people achieve higher productivity. D. To enable shifts in psychological states.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The world is primarily designed for right-handed individuals, yet why does approximately one-tenth of the population prefer the left? ___16___
The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic component to it. ___17___ In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random.
Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. ___18___ In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. ___19___ A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.
___20___ People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well.
Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.
A. Left-handedness used to be perceived as a disability.
B. In other words, left-handedness is an inborn attribute.
C. Why do some parents encourage their left-handed children to embrace their natural tendencies?
D. In Ghana, using the left hand for gestures or exchanging items is considered offensive.
E. The unfavorable implications of the use of the left hand vary significantly across cultures.
F. What drives people to prefer their left hand for routine activities over their right?
G. Fortunately, modern societies have largely moved away from their past negative views of left-handedness.

Ethan was a single father, raising a seven-year-old son alone. Whenever his boy came back hurt after playing with his friend, he would feel deeply sorry for his dead wife, the helplessness and grief coming in waves.
This occurred on the day he was on business, leaving the child alone.
In order to catch the train, he hurried out without accompanying his child to breakfast. He was worried about the child all the way and upset, not knowing if he had his meal and cried. He kept phoning his child even when he arrived at the destination. But his child always sensibly told him not to worry about him. However, because he was worried and upset, he set foot on the way home after he hurriedly handled the affairs.
When he got home and saw the child had slept soundly, he sighed with relief. The journey made him tired out. When he was about to sleep, he was astonished to find there was an overturned (打翻的) bowl of soaked noodles under the quilt. “This child!” Flying into a rage, he fiercely spanked (打屁股) his son sleeping soundly. “Why don’t you obey to Daddy? You are so naughty, making the quilt dirty! Who will wash it for you?” It was the first time he punished his boy after his wife’s death.
“I haven’t . . . ” the child argued as he sobbed, “I’m not naughty. This . . . this is the supper for Daddy. ” It turned out that in order to meet the hour of Daddy’s return, the child soaked two bowls of noodles, one for himself, the other for Daddy. 【答案】Dear students,
As AI advances, some students rely heavily on it for assignments without engaging in deep thinking. While AI can facilitate learning, over-dependence on AI may weaken our critical thinking, limit originality, and reduce problem-solving skills, ultimately harming academic growth.
To use AI rationally, treat it as a supplement, not a replacement. It can be employed to spark ideas or clarify doubts. Nevertheless, simply copying AI-generated answers is inadvisable, as the material should be analyzed, reflected upon, and understood by our minds.
Let us combine AI with independent analysis, which will definitely enhance efficiency while fostering intellectual development on our learning journey!
Sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】参考范文
Hearing that, Ethan hugged his son tightly without a word, only pale moonlight spilling through the window. His hands trembled against the boy’s small back, tears streaming silently into the child’s hair. The overturned noodles, the dirty quilt—every detail now tore his heart like the messy noodles. “Forgive me, ” he choked out in a regretful voice. The child curled into his chest and murmured softly, “I just wanted you to eat warm food, Daddy. ” Ethan held his son’s face, wiped away his tears, and then pressed his forehead to the child’s.
The next morning, Ethan got up early and walked into the kitchen quietly. As he was preparing pancakes for breakfast, his son stepped into the kitchen. Hearing the small footsteps, he turned and smiled. “Let’s cook together! ” he said, handing his sleepy son a spoon. The boy’s eyes lit up, grinning with a wide mouth, and joined his Daddy excitedly in no time. “Look, Daddy! It’s a perfect pancake! ” the child exclaimed, pointing at the messy pancake he made. Ethan laughed, ruffling his hair. “Yes, teamwork makes perfect, just like ours. ” Ethan felt peace settled in his heart, a flicker of hope. He promised himself to face changes and challenges alongside his son.
