Designers and organizations from all over the world are working hard to make fashion better for the environment.
Many school backpacks are made of materials that could take hundreds of years to break down. To solve the problem, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in London came up with the world’s first biodegradable (可生物降解的) backpack in 2022.
Every part of the backpack, except for the zippers, which can be cut out and reused, can break down on its own. When children have finished using it, they can put it in a compost bin (堆肥桶). It will break down in less than a year. The material of the bag looks like leather, but it is made from plants and other green waste.
A clothing store made of recycled plastic opened in Spain in 2023. Spanish design studio Nagami made the store for a brand named Ecoalf. Inside the store, the walls, shelves, and tables were 3D-printedusing 3.3 tons of plastic waste. Most of this plastic came from hospitals.
Both Nagami and Ecoalf care about the environment. Nagami alsouses recycled plastic to make furniture. Ecoalf makes clothes and accessories (配饰) from recycled materials like plastic bottles and old tires (轮胎).
Junk Kouture is an international fashion competition on TV for students aged 12 to 19. In this competition, students make clothes from recycled materials.
On March 4, a 17-year-old student from Ireland named Clodagh Ramsey won the World Designer of the Year award at Junk Kouture. Her winning dress weighs 32 kilograms and is made from 2,000 mussel shells (青口贝壳) that she got from a local restaurant.

From friendships to work stress, more Chinese people are now using AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. They share feelings with the chatbot (聊天机器人) and get warm advice. This is called “AI therapy”, which is becoming popular online. But can robots really replace human therapists?
Around the world, 45 percent of people who needed mental health care in 2024 did not get it because it was too expensive or there weren’t enough doctors, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, a professor at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help fill this gap. “If people can find some support and ideas by talking to ChatGPT or chatbot Claude, then I think that’s wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek. Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people’s needs for emotional (情绪上的) support to a point.
However, AI has its limits. Human therapists understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create personalized (个性化) treatment plans—something robots can’t fully copy. Another problem is safety. AI might act like a therapist without proper training or rules. It can’t be as responsible as human therapists.
Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK. As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits (受益) and risks is important. While AI offers quick help, human connection remains irreplaceable (不可替代) for serious emotional needs.
24. What does the phrase “fill this gap” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Make AI tools cheaper to use. B. Train more mental health workers.
C. Solve the problem mentioned above. D. Provide therapists with great help.
25. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why AI therapy is good. B. The problems with AI therapy.
C. How AI works in hospitals. D. Rules to manage AI therapy.
26. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To encourage people to use AI therapy.
B. To show the disadvantages of AI therapy.
C. To compare AI therapy with human therapy.
D. To introduce the rise and challenges of AI therapy.

Li Yuexian, a college student, is having an interview with Shen Yizheng, who has been a planning editor (策划编辑) at a book publishing company in Beijing for years.
Li: What do you do as a planning editor?
Shen: I have to take care of every step in the publishing process. I need to know about the book market and find authors around the world. Then, I will reach out to the authors. We discuss what to write and who the target audience (目标读者) is to make sure that the book can sell well.
As the first draft (初稿) is prepared, my team and I will check it many times to make sure there are no mistakes. Then it’s time for me to work with the designers and my bosses to decide the cover, price and name of the book. That can take a while because everyone has different ideas!
After that, I will spend my time on printing. What kind of paper should be used? Have the colors been printed out correctly? I sometimes have to go to the printing factories to check these things.
Li: What do you think is the most important part of your job?
Shen: I carry the hopes of a lot of people, like the author, the readers and my boss. I always have to keep calm and be strict. To improve my understanding of the text and the market, I need to read books and news all the time.
“What book can become the bestseller” seems like a question of luck all the time. Even the most experienced editor can get it wrong. Always be true to good content (内容) —that’s the only way you can make a good book.
Li: What have you achieved from your job?
Shen: When I worked on a book about animal adoption, we made donations to an animal organization with the book’s profit (利润). The social value of my books is what keeps me motivated (有动力的).

29. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. The book content. B. The bestseller question.
C. The book price. D. The author’s hope.
30. What can we know about Shen from the passage?
A. She cares about helping society. B. She’s strict with the readers.
C. She cares little about books’ profits. D. She’s strict in her daily life.

He thought he was an important officer. He was very fat, but he had a beautiful uniform, which made him feel even more important. She pretended she was very pleased to see the beadle, whose name was Mr. Bumble, and gave him a glass of gin to drink. Mr. Bumble told Mrs. Mann that he was going to take Oliver away because he was now nine years old.
“We have never been able to find out anything about his father or mother,” he said. “We don’t even know their names. Oliver will work in the workhouse and earn his gruel (稀粥).”
Mrs Mann was surprised nobody knew who Oliver’s parents were and wondered how he got a name.
“I gave it to him,” said the beadle. “I made it up myself.”
Mrs. Mann brought Oliver to the beadle.
“Would you like to come with me Oliver?” asked Mr. Bumble.
31. How did Mrs. Mann deal with the money the government paid her?

A. Because they fought with each other.
B. Because they refused to do their work.

Hi, I’m David House, a Teens writer from the UK. I help solve teenage problems. I hope I can help with yours.
Dear David,
I’ve been feeling upset and bad about myself in the past few months. My classmates all laugh at me because I’m short and a little chubby(圆胖的). They say that I can’t reach 1.6metres. How can I deal with these bad feelings?
Antares
Hi Antares,
You know, I have a similar thing my whole life with my big brother! He’s always been taller and thinner and always made fun of me. He’d call me Napoleon Bonaparte, who was also short (at least in stories), and joked quite frequently, that I never reached my growth potential(生长潜力)because of my poor health as a child, so I feel your pain.
While keeping good health, taking regular exercise and eating right—fiber, vegetables, fruit and meat may help, you may have to learn to live with your height and accept it. The thing is, I look back on my brother’s and others’ comments(评价)with humor now. In the end, it was all character building. Everyone has something about them that they don’t like, or want to change, and that others will exploit(利用). But it’s who we are. Don’t let these comments get to you. Laugh them off and stand proud.

I also asked my teacher for advice and made some changes to my speech. As soon as I stepped onto the stage, I felt nervous, but I tried my best to stay calm and focused. When I finished my speech, the audience gave me a big round of applause.
From then on, I became more confident in speaking English. I realized that hard work and perseverance can help us achieve our goals. This experience taught me not to be afraid of challenges and to always believe in myself.
