Act Your Age
ring-around-the-rosy
Mary was blowing bubbles(吹泡泡) in her bedtime milk. “Act your age,” Aunt Augusta said loudly. It seemed that Aunt Augusta was a bit angry.
When Mary’s mother came back into the room, Mary was quiet. “Are you OK?” asked her mother. “Yes,” said Mary. But she felt better when Aunt Augusta finished visiting them.
The next day, Mary was playing ring-around-the-rosy with her five-year-old sister, Grace, and two of Grace’s friends on the playground.
Just then, Mary's friend Julie came along. “You’d better act your age,” said Julie. “What will Sandra and Susan think?”
Slowly, Mary said good-bye to Grace. She went with Julie to join their friends Sandra and Susan.
The next day was a Saturday. Mary went to her grandparents' house for dinner. Before dinner, Mary’s grandparents and her parents played ring-around-the-rosy with Grace. Mary just watched. When they sat down to eat, Mary saw that her grandmother had made her lots of tasty food. She began to feel a little better. Then Aunt Augusta started talking about her fights with her next-door neighbor(邻居) .
“...and yesterday I came home and found his dog burying a bone(埋骨头) right in the middle of my flowerbed! After the dog left, I dug up the bone, wrapped(包装) it, and put it in that man’s mailbox,” she said.
“Oh, Augusta,” said Mary’s mom. “You should learn to act your age.”
Mary laughed when she heard what her mom said. She kept laughing even though she tried to stop. Aunt Augusta finally got a smile on her face and said, “Well, I guess I should.”
hopscotch
The next afternoon, Mary was playing hopscotch with Grace when Julie walked by.
“Hopscotch?” asked Julie. “You still play a baby game?”
“Yes I do,” said Mary.
For a while, Julie watched Mary and Grace playing. Then, quietly she asked, “May I play, too?”

How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families, always making ourselves believe that this style of life is only a temporary (暂时的) state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English “Have a nice day”. They speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.
How often do we say to ourselves, “I’ll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher position”, only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter, I knew a man who gave up a very well-paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and work for a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was surprised by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area? I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser. I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains.
31. The first paragraph of the passage tells us that ________.
A. we always try to find some time to write a book
B. we always make plans but seldom finish them
C. we always enjoy many of life’s best moments
D. we always do what we really want to do
32. The underlined phrase “turn his back on” most probably means “________.”
A. give up B. keep on C. try out D. look for
33. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Find a Good Job B. Wait for Real Life
C. Value This Very Day D. Get a Higher Position
D
Following the crowd (随大流) may not always be in a person’s best interest. However, a new study shows that teens who go along with their friends may become healthier as adults. Scientists have known that close friendships help improve health. People who do their own thing may experience unpleasant feelings and get sick. Those findings inspired Joseph Allen, a scientist, to look at teen behavior. Allen’s group noticed that experiences during teen years might influence adult health.
Scientists interviewed 171 teens every year for five years starting at the age of 13. These teens became the focal (焦点的) teens in the study. They asked the focal teens about both positive and negative questions of friendship. The scientists also spoke to their closest friends. They asked the friends how likely the focal person was to follow the crowd, go along with the friends or keep on doing his or her own thing.
They interviewed the same 171 people again when they grew up, at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person’s overall health. The scientists found a correlation (相互关系) between a teen’s behavior and adult health. Firstly, teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Secondly, teens who held back (抑制) their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults than those who shared feelings with a close friend. What’s more, the study found that teens who went along with what their friends wanted, instead of being independent, also were healthier in their twenties.
The correlation held up (依然成立) even after the scientists included other possible influences on health, such as weight, family income and drug use. Study showed that such other things did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did. For those who wonder whether they should follow the crowd or not, now they have a legitimate (合理的) reason to say yes!
34. Scientists asked the focal teens ________.
A. if they experienced unpleasant feelings
B. if they always agreed with their friends
C. about the things they kept on doing on their own
D. about the positive and negative questions of friendship
35. What can we learn from the study?
A. Expressing feelings to a close friend can be good for you.
B. Other things can explain health as well as teen friendships.
C. Being independent is better than working with friends.
D. Teenagers shouldn’t follow the crowd and say no to others.
36. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Teens and Growth
B. Say Yes to Teens
C. Friendship and Health
D. Get along with Friends
37. Where can you probably read this passage?
A. Science novel.
B. Health report.
C. Fashion magazine.
D. Newspaper.

Around the world, about 450 million people are living with a mental (心理的) health problem right now. However, few people would like to talk about any mental health problem they have because they think it is a shame (羞耻).
To bring attention to mental health problems and help people to solve those problems, World Mental Health (WMH) Day was first celebrated in 1992. Now, more and more people celebrate WMH Day on 10th October.
It is important for us to look after our own mental health. Do you know how good exercise is for mental health? Doing exercise and spending time in nature can really help to deal with worries and depression (沮丧). So why not go for a walk in a park or the countryside?
Your diet can also change how you feel. If you eat candies, cake, chocolate, etc., your blood sugar will rise and fall, making you feel angry and tired. Make sure you eat enough vegetables and fruit, and you may feel good. It’s also important to drink enough water—being thirsty (口渴) can make it difficult to think clearly.
Also, it’s good to spend time with other people. Talking to others and asking them for support can help to reduce (减少) the shame.
World Mental Health Day encourages us to pay more attention to both our own mental health and other people’s. Anything you do on WMH Day will help us all to better understand and support people with mental health problems.
38. How many people are living with a mental health problem right now?

A. in B. on C. at D. with
【答案】B
【解析】
【详解】句意:你应该在你的学习上花费更多的时间。
考查介词辨析。in在……里面;on在……上面;at在;with和,用。“spend time on sth.”是固定短语,意为“在某事上花费时间”。这里表示在学习上花费时间,所以用介词“on”。故选B。

4. It’s windy outside now. ________ Mary nor I want to go shopping.
A. Both B. Either C. None D. Neither
【答案】D
【解析】
【详解】句意:现在外面刮风了。我和玛丽都不想去购物。

—Sure, no problem.
A. Could B. Should C. Must D. May
【答案】A
【解析】
【详解】句意:——汤姆,你能打扫一下房子吗?你奶奶要来这里。——当然,没问题。
考查情态动词。Could能,礼貌地请求别人做事);Should应该;Must必须;May可能。根据“…you please clean the house, Tom?”和答语“Sure, no problem.”可知,此处是礼貌地请求别人帮忙,应用委婉语气,主语是you,所以用could。故选A。

【答案】D
【解析】

A. Why not you B. Why don’t you C. How about D. What about
【答案】B

They speak slowly and seriously in their shops hotels and sandwich bars.
【答案】31. B 32. A 33. C
【解析】
【导语】本文主要告诉读者要在生活中珍惜每一天,享受每一天,要去做自己想做的事情。

词义猜测题。根据“When I first became a reporter, I knew a man who gave up a very well-paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and work for a small weekly newspaper.”及“How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area”可知,不明白怎么会有人会放弃一份体面的工作而选择了一份不起眼的工作,所以划线部分与gave up同义,故选A。
【33题详解】
最佳标题题。根据“This is life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments”可知,作者通过本文让读者珍惜和享受每一天,所以适合本文的标题是C选项“珍惜今天”,故选C。
