Many artists take inspiration from their travels, but Benjamin Sack found a unique way to make his way around the world. For the past decade, artist Benjamin Sack has been navigating the globe in an unconventional studio — a Holland American cruise ship (游轮). This platform enables him to dig into global architectural designs, which he then masterfully integrates into detailed pen drawings.
Sack first approached Holland America — a company known for its round-the-world cruises — after he finished university. He proposed a unique idea: an “artist residency” where he’d give drawing classes and lectures to passengers on art related to the ports of call. He also offered to create a large map-style drawing to be in memory of the voyage. Now, he’s affectionately known as King Neptune’s (海神的) court artist.
Sack’s shipboard studio offers sweeping, ever-changing views that inspire his work. At each journey’s end, he presents a final drawing to passengers and crew, catching the essence of their travels. On the ship, Sack interacts with a variety of people, bridging the gap between passengers and crew. This unique advantage enriches his artistic perspective, similar to how art bridges societal gaps on land.
His drawings catch architectural wonders like Florence’s Duomo, similar to M. C. Escher’s attractive lithographs (平板画). Sack sees architecture as music solidified, each structure a character in a grand symphony of movement and form.
Adventure is Sack’s constant companion, with months at sea weaving into his large, detail-rich works. From Himeji Castle’s majesty to Singapore’s Marina Bay modernity, his pieces mirror the globe’s architectural wonders.
“On land, the drawings are fixed to the studio. On the ship, the studio travels,” Sack thinks. His artworks literally grasp the essence of the voyage, with the ship’s gentle rocking deeply influencing each line. Through his stateroom window, sunsets and sunrises from various time zones adorn (装饰) his drawings, making each year’s work richer than the last. “It’s magic!” he says.
24.What is unique about Sack’s “artist residency” on the Holland American cruise ship?
A.He only offers drawing classes to passengers.
B.He gives lectures according to where the ship arrives.
C.He specially draws scenes from African cities.
D.He creates advertising materials for the cruise line.
25.What can be inferred about Benjamin Sack’s view on architecture?
A.He believes it should be uniform and consistent worldwide.
B.He thinks it should mirror societal structures and divisions.
C.He sees it as a form of frozen music with its own character.
D.He focuses entirely on modern architectural designs in his artwork.
26.How does Sack’s shipboard studio influence his artwork?
A.It limits the size of his drawings due to lack of space.
B.It exposes him to a limited variety of architectural styles.
C.It restricts him to using black and white colours in his artworks.
D.It allows him to integrate real-time sea motions into his artworks.
27.Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the text?
A.How challenging it is to become an artist at sea.
B.An artist drawing his incredible adventures aboard a cruise ship.
C.How travelling inspires artistic creation in Benjamin Sack.
D.The relationship between architecture and Sack’s artwork.

A Dartmouth-led study confirms the behavioral and physical effects of commuting on work quality. The study also shows how data from personal tech devices can help improve employee productivity and satisfaction.
Participants in the study used a Garmin vivo Smart 3 activity tracker and a smartphone-based sensing app to capture physiological and behavioral patterns during commuting.
Researchers analyzed data from 275 workers collected over a one-year period. The workers, close to 95% of whom drove, were monitored as they traveled. They were also monitored for 30-minute periods before and after commuting.
“We were able to build machine learning models to accurately predict job performance,” said Subigya Nepal, lead author of the paper. “The key was being able to objectively assess commuting stress along with the physiological reaction to the commuting experience.”
The study assessed workers using two recognized criteria of job performance: counterproductive work behavior and organizational citizenship behavior. Counterproductive behavior deliberately harms an organization, whereas citizenship behaviors are beneficial. Baselines for both measures were established regularly through self-reporting questionnaires.
“Compared to low performers, high performers display greater consistency in the time they arrive and leave work,” said Pino Audia, a co-author of the study. “This dramatically reduces the negative impacts of commuting variability and suggests that the secret to high performance may lie in sticking to better routines.”
This is the first study using unobtrusive wearables and smartphones to predict worker performance from commuting data alone. According to the researchers, previous studies have used more noticeable and expensive technology — such as headmounts and electrodes — to understand the commuting experience, but no study has previously connected commuting data with the impact on workplace performance.
The study also demonstrates that not all commutes can be bad. The research confirms that commuters who are involved in active forms of commuting typically experience increased productivity at work.
In the future, the researchers expect that ubiquitous sensing technology will be able to detect commuter stress and offer tailored interventions such as music, podcasts, connecting them to friends and family, or offering tips for short stops.
28.What’s special about the study?
A.It links commuting data to work quality.
B.It creates two criteria of job performance.
C.It uses Tech devices to interpret commuting.
D.It uses expensive technology to predict work efficiency.
29.Which paragraphs focus on the process of the research?
A.Paragraphs 1 and 2. B.Paragraphs 2 to 3. C.Paragraphs 3 to 5. D.Paragraphs 5 and 6.
30.What does the underlined word unobtrusive in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
A.not accessible. B.not noticeable. C.not acceptable. D.not predictable.
31.According to the study, which of the following helps improve work quality?
A.Developing good commuting habits. B.Increasing commuting stress.
C.Choosing new means of commute. D.Avoid commuting at rush hours.
D
In May, China Railway conducted a survey on the demand for pet transportation on high-speed trains. The survey gained widespread attention far beyond potential train passengers. While many pet owners looked forward to the possibility of bringing pets onboard, some people were worried that the pets might cause injuries and spread diseases.
The industry surrounding pets is considered to have begun in 1992, the year in which the country’s first organization devoted to small animal protection was founded. According to a recent report, China’s pet economy was valued at 592.8 billion yuan ($83 billion) in 2023. In May, some new standards for lost animal rescue and pet funerals were proposed. A month later, Shanghai became the first city in the country to issue rules for the display of animals in indoor commercial places.
These developments have highlighted the shifting role of animals in China’s cities and the necessity for more regulation of the pet economy. The rising number of pets in cities over the past three decades has caused heated debates over the use of public resources and spaces. As more and more people see pets as not just animals living under the same roof, but as close members of their families and communities, finding the right balance for people and animals to coexist in a city environment becomes an increasingly important task.
32.Why did China Railway conduct the survey?
A.To analyse the needs of pets traveling on trains.
B.To know the exact number of pets in China.
C.To find the cause of people’s keeping pets.
D.To conclude the response of the owners of pets.
33.What can we know about pet economy in China?
A.Most of the people are worried about it.
B.It was valued at 592.8 billion dollars in 2023.
C.It was first started in Shanghai before 2023.
D.More rules are needed for its development.
34.How does the author develop the second paragraph?
A.By following space order. B.By following time order.
C.By giving some examples. D.By making comparison.
35.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Pets in the city. B.China Railway’s survey.
C.Pets on the train. D.China Railway’s worry.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Throughout our lives, we usually look for just one answer to each question we encounter, like when we ask what 2+2 equals or what the capital of India is. 36 The “one-problem, one-answer” mindset is deeply rooted in how we think.
But what happens if we’re asked to generate different responses instead of one correct answer? 37 I asked them, “What if there is more than one way to record the answer to 2+2?” They voiced varied answers, such as ½ of 8, how Lincoln began “The Gettysburg Address”, the number of runners on a relay team, and the number following 3, etc. These kids weren’t “boxed in” by the artificial “requirement” of finding a single right answer. Rather, they were asked a question beginning with the two words “What if……?” 38
What lies behind the issue then? Ken Robinson has observed that our educational systems often don't help students develop their natural creativity. 39 Studies have shown that teachers claim to value qualities of independent thinking and curiosity, yet they reward behaviors of obedience. Thus, a workforce emerges that prioritizes conformity(顺从) over creativity. Simply stated, we tell students to color inside the lines and then expect adults to think outside the box.
40 Ask open-ended questions more often to encourage students to explore different ways of thinking. On top of this, a safe environment should be created where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. By doing so, students are better equipped to face complex problems with greater flexibility and innovation in the future.
A.Avoiding risks is a natural tendency.
B.However, they have the potential to succeed.
C.To find out, I approached a group of fourth-graders.
D.Instead, they promote uniformity and standardization.
E.The results, as you can see, were diverse and inventive.
F.Seldom do we consider the possibility of multiple answers.
G.It’s time to break free from the “single right answer” mindset.

Scientists at the international conservation charity Zoological Society of London (ZSL) have used historical records from China stretching back over 400 years 56 (track) changes in the distribution of gibbons (长臂猿), which today are some of China’s most 57 (threaten) species. This is one of the first instances 58 use ancient historical records to reconstruct the course of extinctions across several centuries.
59 (use) local government records dating from as early as 1600 AD, the researchers were able to infer the former presence of gibbons in different regions. They discovered that only a few hundred years ago, gibbons 60 (find) across almost half of China. 61 , gibbon populations declined sharply during the 20th century, and today they survive in only a few remote forests. One of China’s gibbon species, the Hainan gibbon, is now probably the 62 (rare) mammal species in the world, 63 a total population of only 26-28 individuals.
Dr Samuel Turvey, senior research fellow at ZSL, said, “China has a fantastically rich historical record, including 64 wealth of environmental data that has rarely been used for conservation 65 (manage). Because of the current global environmental crisis, we have to explore new ways to better understand the kinds of factors that put species in danger of extinction.”

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Our ten-year-old son, Eric, was a happy but hyperactive (多动症) child. Although he was quite bright and had a warm spirit with a bright smile lighting up his face, he had learning difficulties in focusing on reading and writing. He struggled with understanding instructions or remembering new information, causing him to fall behind in class. The psychologist did the tests that showed he liked animals, so we took in two rabbits, hoping that caring for them would improve his condition.
One Sunday morning, a warm little hand urgently patted my cheek. “Mom, wake up! There’s a big storm. We have to bring in Bucket and Captain!” Instinctively, I reached for my husband, Larry, but he was on a business trip.
I turned on the light. Eric leaped up on the bed to peek through the curtains. The window was covered with driving snow. “Let’s go, Mom. We have to save them!”
We stuffed ourselves into some winter clothes and hurried to the yard. Eric went charging out into the snow-filled darkness to the rabbit hutches. “You get Captain,” he shouted through the howling wind, already holding Bucket, a white male rabbit, back to the house.

I dragged Captain from the cage into the room and surprisingly found that Eric was busy preparing something. His face was serious and focused without noticing that the rabbit was eating the telephone cord (电话线).
Soon, the rabbits bounced around playfully, feeding on fresh vegetables. Eric took a moment to observe their behaviors and gently touched their fur, whispering southing words of comfort. He also got the rabbits to rest in a nest made of towels and blankets in front of the fireplace and even read them his favorite books. Time seemed to have stood still.
Larry returned ahead of time, “What is going on here?”, staring at Eric. “I got worried when I couldn’t reach you, so I caught an earlier flight,” he explained. “Did you know the phone is out of order?”

【答案】24.B 25.C 26.D 27.B

【答案】36.F 37.C 38.E 39.D 40.G

Rather, they were asked a question beginning with the two words “What if……?”(这些孩子不会被人为的“要求”所“束缚”,只需要找到一个正确的答案。相反,他们被问了一个以“如果……会怎么样?”开头的问题。)”可知此处指出孩子们没有被要求只需要找到一个正确的答案,而是被问了一个“如果……会怎么样?”的问题,孩子们就给出了各种各样的答案,E项The results, as you can see, were diverse and inventive.(结果,正如你所看到的,是多样化和创造性的。)对上文进行总结,与上文衔接紧密,选项中的The results指的是上文所提到问题的答案,diverse and inventive与本段第一句中的different相互照应,符合上下文语境,故选E项。

40.空处位于段首,应为主旨句。根据空后“Ask open-ended questions more often to encourage students to explore different ways of thinking. On top of this, a safe environment should be created where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. By doing so, students are better equipped to face complex problems with greater flexibility and innovation in the future.(多问一些开放式的问题,鼓励学生探索不同的思维方式。最重要的是,应该创造一个安全的环境,让学生敢于冒险和犯错。通过这样做,学生们能够更好地面对复杂的问题,在未来具有更大的灵活性和创新性。)”指出要多问一些开放式的问题并鼓励学生探索不同的思维方式及这样做的意义,换句话说就是我们要摆脱传统的唯一正确答案的模式,G项It’s time to break free from the “single right answer” mindset.(是时候摆脱“唯一正确答案”的思维模式了。)指出是时候摆脱“唯一正确答案”的思维模式了,概括全段内容,符合上下文语境,故选G项。

Dr Samuel Turvey, senior research fellow at ZSL, said, “China has a fantastically rich historical record, including 64 wealth of environmental data that has rarely been used for conservation 65 (manage).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Eric rushed to Larry and told him what had happened.

With days passing by, Eric had a big change.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Eric rushed to Larry and told him what had happened. His eyes were wide with excitement as he recounted the stormy adventure. “Dad, it was so scary! The snow was so thick, but we saved Bucket and Captain,” Eric babbled. Larry listened attentively, his initial confusion replaced by a warm smile. “You did a great job, son. Taking care of the rabbits in such a tough situation shows how much you’ve grown,” Larry praised. Eric beamed with pride, his cheeks flushed. Then, they laughed together about the chewed-up phone cord, with Eric promising to be more careful next time.
With days passing by, Eric had a big change. In school, he no longer fidgeted in his seat. His teachers were amazed at his new-found ability to focus during lessons. At home, he became more organized. He made a schedule for feeding and cleaning the rabbits, and even started to help with other household chores. His reading improved as he often read aloud to the rabbits. Moreover, his social skills blossomed. He shared stories about the rabbits with his classmates, making more friends.
