Once I tied one end of a string around a book and the other end around my waist climbed a tree and sat in the branches reading until dinner time. In college I thought I might major in journalism or history but when I took my first literature class I was deeply attracted to it. The calling to be an English major was in my heart and I couldn’t imagine spending my study hours without Shakespeare, Chaucer or Lewis by my side. I learned the art of making connections between literature and life and developed a love for writing. After graduation I taught English in a primary school in Canada for five years then I went to Australia and worked as a book editor. Three years ago I came to China. I’ve been teaching English in middle schools I love my job and I’m thankful for the gift of words for the life connection beauty and learning that come from language. 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) A A Selection of Museums and Attractions in Washington DC The Tidal Basin The basin part of the West Potomac Park, is surrounded by a path that’s perfect for walking, running or cycling. The memorials to Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King Junior are two highlights surrounding the lake. It is the location most associated with Washington’s Cherry Blossom (樱花) Festival that takes place each spring. National Museum of African American History and Culture The museum opened in late 2016 after more than a decade of planning. It is dedicated to African American history and culture and is organized like a vertical timeline, starting with the Atlantic slave trade on the 1400s and moving up to the 21st century. Higher up are exhibitions on African American music, theatre and art. It’s a powerful experience and also very popular: you’ll have to apply for a timed ticket to enter. The Newseum Further along Pennsylvania Avenue is the Newseum, loved for the 800 newspaper front pages from around the world that are hung outside every morning. Inside, there are moving exhibits showing how important historical events have been reported, such as the September 11 attacks. Alongside newspaper pages from the day after the attacks, there’s a video exhibit highlighting the work of journalists reporting on the Twin Towers falling. A must if you’re interested in journalism. National Gallery of Art The art gallery is an impressive space: two buildings, linked underground, and a sculpture garden next door. Inside the light-filed East Building there’s modern art, including a roomful of Jackson Pollock’s murals (壁), Andy Warhol’s Green Marilyn and Roy Lichtenstein’s Look Mickey. The classical West Building tends to house older artwork: the European impressionists and Italian Renaissance art (from artists including Da Vinci and Raphael) are two highlights. 21. Which of the following requires reserving a ticket in advance? A. The Newseum. B. The Tidal Basin. C. National Gallery of Art. D. National Museum of African American History and Culture. 22. What can visitors do at the Newseum? A. Learn about the stories about news. B. Learn how to report important events. C. Talk with journalists about the 9/11 attacks. 根据文章第二段“It’s a powerful experience and also very popular: you’ll have to apply for a timed ticket to enter.”(这是一次强烈的体验,也非常受欢迎:你必须申请一个定时的票才能进入。) 根据文章第三段“Inside, there are moving exhibits showing how important historical events have been reported, such as the September 11 attacks.”(里面有一些动人的展览,展示了重要的历史事件是如何被报道的,比如9月11日的袭击。) 故选A。 根据文章第四段“Inside the light-filed East Building there’s modern art, including a roomful of Jackson Pollock’s murals (壁), Andy Warhol’s Green Marilyn and Roy Lichtenstein’s Look Mickey.”(在光线充足的东楼里,有现代艺术,包括杰克逊·波洛克的一屋子壁画,安迪·沃霍尔的绿色玛丽莲和罗伊·利希滕斯坦的看米奇。) A。 B Two days after Alice Munro died, I went to an event in New York and found myself among strangers. A woman asked me if I’d heard that the great “Janet Munro” had died. Janet? The confusion was cleared up, and another woman told me that Munro wrote only stories, not novels. Next came the usual question, which people often ask of someone who writes novels and stories: “Which is easier for you?” Easy? That’s an adjective that I’ve never connected with literature. I felt uneasy, thinking that these people might only know Munro for her fame. For a moment I wanted to ask about their favorite Munro story, but I did not. Because I wouldn’t have known the answer, either. I first read Munro in my late 20s. Over the years I have become a revisitor of her writing. And between the revisits life kept changing: marriage different jobs, giving birth to and parenting two children, losing them six years apart, and now, still feeling sad. I last read Munro in the summer of 2022, on a family holiday near Lake Geneva. I had lost one child then; I did not yet know what was to come. I clearly remember the moment I underlined a sentence when a pair of swans moved effortlessly past me: “She doesn’t mistake that for reality, and neither does she mistake anything else for reality, and that is how she knows that she is reasonable.” The sentence reflected my emotions and touched me deeply. Rereading the passage today, I can’t say I am more clear-headed than I was then. Only, I’ve come further in life, with new knowledge about what is called reality. Stories, at least the kind Munro had written in her career that lasted more than 40 years, are life itself. Rereading Munro is demanding — it asks the readers not to shy away from life; rewarding, too, as I am certain many of Munro’s readers will agree. 24. What does the author think of the people at the event? A. They focused on Munro’s novels. B. They were professionals in literature. C. They knew a lot about Munro’s life. D. They hadn’t read Munro’s works deeply. 25. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The themes in Munro’s writing. B. Munro’s influence on other writers. C. The author’s favorite Munro story. D. The author’s personal reading journey. 26. Why did the author underline the sentence about reality? A. It mirrored her feelings. B. It was a famous saying. C. It was the only part she liked. D. It inspired her to reread it. 27. What is the author’s attitude towards Munro’s stories? A. Uncertain. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Appreciative. D 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第二段中“I felt uneasy, thinking that these people might only know Munro for her fame.(我感到不安,心想这些人可能只是因为她的名气才知道门罗)”可知,作者认为这些人知道门罗是因为门罗的名气,而不是因为门罗的作品。 根据第三段“I first read Munro in my late 20s. Over the years I have become a revisitor of her writing. And between the revisits life kept changing: marriage, different jobs, giving birth to and parenting two children, losing them six years apart, and now, still feeling sad. I last read Munro in the summer of 2022, on a family holiday near Lake Geneva. I had lost one child then; I did not yet know what was to come. I clearly remember the moment I underlined a sentence when a pair of swans moved effortlessly past me: “She doesn’t mistake that for reality, and neither does she mistake anything else for reality, and that is how she knows that she is reasonable.” The sentence reflected my emotions and touched me deeply.(我第一次读门罗的作品是在二十多岁快结束时。 根据第三段中“I clearly remember the moment I underlined a sentence when a pair of swans moved effortlessly past me: “She doesn’t mistake that for reality, and neither does she mistake anything else for reality, and that is how she knows that she is reasonable.” The sentence reflected my emotions and touched me deeply.(我清楚地记得,当一对天鹅轻松地游过我身旁时,我划下了一句话:“她没有把这当成现实,也没有把其他任何东西当成现实,这就是她知道自己是理智的原因。”这句话反映了我的情绪,深深地触动了我)”可知,作者划线的原因是这句话反映了她的感受,深深地触动了她。故选A项。 根据第四段“Rereading the passage today, I can’t say I am more clear-headed than I was then. Only, I’ve come further in life, with new knowledge about what is called reality.(今天重读这篇文章,我不能说我的头脑比那时更清醒了。只是,我在生活中走得更远,对所谓的现实有了新的认识)”和最后一段中“Rereading Munro is demanding — it asks the readers not to shy away from life; rewarding, too, as I am certain many of Munro’s readers will agree.(重读门罗的作品是要求很高的——它要求读者不要逃避生活;同时也是很有回报的,我相信门罗的许多读者都会同意这一点)”可知,作者认为门罗的作品能带给自己新的认知,能带来很高的回报,这说明作者对门罗的作品持欣赏的态度。故选D项。 C When the company OpenAI developed its new artificial intelligence (AI) program, ChatGPT, in late 2022, educators began to worry. ChatGPT could create text that seemed like a human wrote it. How could teachers discover whether students were using language created by an AI chatbot to cheat on a writing task? As a linguist who studies the effects of technology on how people read, write and think, I believe there are other more pressing concerns besides cheating. These include whether AI, more generally, threatens student writing skills, the value of writing as a process, and the importance of regarding writing as a tool for thinking. As part of my research on the effects of AI on human writing, I surveyed young adults in the U.S. about some issues related to those effects. One participant said that at some point if you depend on predictive text, you’re going to lose your spelling abilities. Enter “Was Rom” into a Google search and you’re given a list of choices like “Was Rome built in a day”. Type “ple” into a text message and you’re offered “please” and “plenty”. These tools complete our sentences automatically, giving us little chance to think about our spelling, and continuously asking us to follow their suggestions. Evan Selinger, a philosopher, worried that predictive texting reduces the power of writing as a form of mental activity and personal expression. “By encouraging us not to think too deeply about our words, predictive technology may change how we deal with each other,” Selinger wrote. “We give others more algorithms (算法) and less of ourselves. Automation can stop us thinking and the resulting text didn’t feel like mine anymore.” I asked ChatGPT whether it was a threat to humans’ motivation to write. The bot responded: “There will always be a demand for creative, original content that requires the unique viewpoint of a human writer.” It continued: “Writing serves many purposes beyond just the creation of content, such as self-expression, communication, and personal growth, which can continue to encourage people to write even if certain types of writing can be automated.” I was glad to find the program had seemingly admitted its limitations. 28. What is the author’s main concern about ChatGPT? A. Whether it will lead to students’ cheating. B. Whether it will shape students’ writing style. C. How students will make use of it at school. D. What effects it will have on students’ writing. 29. What will predictive technology do to us according to Evan Selinger? A. Give us more creative ideas. B. Make us write like a machine. C. Encourage us to think more deeply. D. Make us tend to ignore grammatical mistakes. 30. What can we learn from ChatGPT’s response? A. Writing will become completely automated. B. Robots will work with humans in writing. C. Robot writing will become more creative. D. Human writing will still matter a lot. 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. What impact will AI bring to writing? B. What is the future of modern literature? C. How to improve writing with AI’s help? D. How to apply AI technology to education? D 29. B 30. D 31. 根据文章第二段“These include whether AI, more generally, threatens student writing skills, the value of writing as a process, and the importance of regarding writing as a tool for thinking.(这些问题包括,更普遍地说,人工智能是否威胁到学生的写作技能,写作作为一个过程的价值,以及将写作视为思维工具的重要性)”可知,作者比较关心人工智能会给学生的写作带来的影响。 根文章第三段“Evan Selinger, a philosopher, worried that predictive texting reduces the power of writing as a form of mental activity and personal expression.“By encouraging us not to think too deeply about our words, predictive technology may change how we deal with each other,” Selinger wrote. ”(哲学家Evan Selinger担心,预测性短信会削弱写作作为一种心理活动和个人表达形式的力量。“通过鼓励我们不要太深入地思考自己的言语,预测技术可能会改变我们处理彼此的方式,”Selinger写道)”可知,预测性的写作会削弱人类自我思考,只是像一个机器一样写作。故选B。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“There will always be a demand for creative, original content that requires the unique viewpoint of a human writer.(对创造性、原创内容的需求总是需要人类作家的独特观点)”可知,创造性和原创性的内容还是需要人类作家的输出。 根据文章第一段“ChatGPT could create text that seemed like a human wrote it. How could teachers discover whether students were using language created by an AI chatbot to cheat on a writing task?(ChatGPT可以创建看起来像是人类写的文本。 A。 D Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents. This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the US and expected food production. The researchers found that cities in the Northwest in the United States had the greatest potential to raise their own food. Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre of agricultural land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room for agricultural spreading. The study revealed that the United States have extra agricultural land for feeding the domestic population. Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production would start a conversation about how that land gets used. In the words of Peters, lead author and associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, “It would be important to make sure policies for supporting local or regional food production benefit conservation and create opportunities for farmers to adopt more sustainable (可持续的) practices. Policies should also recognize the ability of the natural resources in a given local or region and consider the supply chain, including ability for food processing and storage.” Although it’s a far cry from the current reality, it is a nice thought to imagine cities surrounded by food production operations that transport freshly harvested food to nearby homes, and then make use of the leftover food to fertilize fields and generate heat for greenhouses. 32. Why do the cities along the Eastern seaside fail to provide enough food? A. Because citizens are unwilling to grow crops. B. Because the methods of food production are wrong. C. Because they don’t have enough land to grow crops. D. Because their climate limits the agricultural production. 33. What will the focus on local food production lead to? A. More job opportunities for citizens. B. Conversations with the local government. C. A discussion on how to make use of land. D. More specific policies about water resources. 34. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry from” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Closely related to. B. Very different from. C. Exactly the same as. D. Slightly different from. 35. What is the best title of this text? A. The US Government Stops Wasting Food B. Cities Learn to Grow Food From the Villages C. Farmers Have More Chances to Be Employed D. Many Cities in the US Can Grow Their Own Food 【答案】32. C 33. C 34. B 35. 根据第二段中“Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre of agricultural land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room for agricultural spreading.(东部沿海城市和西南部城市的潜力最小,即使每英亩农田都用于粮食生产,它们也无法满足自身对饮食的全部需求。 根据第三段中“Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production would start a conversation about how that land gets used. 根据第四段“Although it’s a far cry from the current reality, it is a nice thought to imagine cities surrounded by food production operations that transport freshly harvested food to nearby homes, and then make use of the leftover food to fertilize fields and generate heat for greenhouses.(尽管这与当前的现实 ,但想象一下被食品生产企业包围的城市是一个不错的想法,这些企业将新鲜收获的食物运送到附近的家庭,然后利用剩下的食物给田地施肥,为温室供暖)”以及其中but和imagine可知,前面的内容与实际情况是不一样的,所以猜测a far cry from应表示“与…… 根据第一段“Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents. This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the US and expected food production.(美国的许多城市可以在当地种植自己的粮食,种植足够的作物和牲畜来满足所有居民的需求。 故D项“Many Cities in the US Can Grow Their Own Food(美国的很多城市可以种植自己的粮食)”可以作为最佳标题。 Schools consume a large amount of energy, which has a bad effect on the environment.___36___, there are lots of ways that you can help your school save energy. D. Read 800 recently published newspapers. 23. Why is Green Marilyn exhibited in the East Building? A. It’s a painting of modern art. B. It is a painting of traditional art. C. It is a painting by a famous artist. D. It is a priceless painting of the gallery. B Two days after Alice Munro died, I went to an event in New York and found myself among strangers. C When the company OpenAI developed its new artificial intelligence (AI) program, ChatGPT, in late 2022, educators began to worry. D Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents.
