One afternoon, the frog decided that he was tired of this one-sided friendship. So the frog tied one end of a piece of string (细绳) to his leg and then tied the other end to the little mouse’s tail without him noticing.
The frog waved goodbye to the mouse and then jumped into the pond. All at once, the string pulled tight on the mouse’s tail and the mouse fell into the pond below. Splash!
The poor little mouse could not swim. After much fighting, he finally drowned in the pond. “That will teach you to make a fool out of me, you lazy mouse,” thought the frog.
But then, high up in the sky, a hawk (鹰) saw the mouse floating in the water below. Se the hungry hawk swooped down (俯冲) to catch the mouse for its dinner.
Suddenly, the frog realised that he was still tied to the mouse by the string. Up, up into the sky, went the frog. It was then that the frog realised the error of his ways. In setting a trap (陷阱) for his friend, the frog had also set a trap for himself.

Modesty is a valuable quality in many cultures around the world. In China, this is no different. However, the phrase “毛遂自荐” seems to disagree with this.
During the Warring States Period, the Qin army marched (进军) on Handan, the capital of Zhao. Seeing that Handan was in danger, Prince Pingyuan asked for help from the state of Chu. He wanted to pick 20 talented people to go with him. However, he could only find 19 people who were good enough. Then, a man named Mao Sui volunteered.
Prince Pingyuan looked at Mao Sui with doubt. “How long have you been here with me?” “Three years,” Mao Sui answered. “I hear that a person with talent is like an awl in a cloth bag. Its sharp point will soon pierce through the bag. You’ve been here for a long time, but I haven’t seen any of your achievements. Maybe you don’t have any talent,” said Prince Pingyuan.
“What I’m asking you now is to put me into that bag. If you do that, I will pierce through it. But not only the point—the whole awl,” Mao Sui said confidently.
Impressed, Prince Pingyuan allowed Mao to join his team, and Mao proved very helpful. Now the phrase “Mao Sui recommending himself” is used to describe someone who volunteers to do a task.
However, there is a fine line between self-confidence and arrogance (傲慢). It’s important to believe in yourself, but a strong ego (自我) can harm your career and professional relationships. So we recommend letting your work speak for itself.
8. Where did Mao Sui come from?
A. Qin. B. Chu. C. Zhao. D. We don’t know.
9. What does the underlined phrase “pierce through” mean?
A. cut or make a way through B. be on both sides of
C. be made up of D. make a slight shake
10. What is the phrase “Mao Sui recommending himself” used to describe now?
A. Feeling powerful B. Volunteering for a task
C. Being honest enough D. Showing modesty
11. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Talented people have no chances. B. We should believe in ourselves.
C. Modesty isn’t a valuable quality. D. A strong ego can do good to our career.
C 9. A 10. B 11. B

“I seldom watch TV mainly because of the boring advertisements (广告),” Song Ruiqi from Zhejiang said. “They always show up when a show or a movie is halfway through its run. So my family and I hardly turn on the TV at home.”
He Liyan from Jiangsu believes that mobile phones or computers can easily meet our needs for watching videos. TVs often have hidden fees and complex (复杂的) interfaces. These problems have led to (造成) situations where young people aren’t interested in them, while the elderly find them difficult to use.
“We have a busy day, leaving us with little time to watch TV. Also, the TV shows we enjoy are different from the ones our parents like. In my family, I can hardly get a chance to control the remote when they sit on the sofa,” said Zhang Linhui, Guangdong.
“Different from traditional TVs, which require us to be at home to watch, video websites can be seen anytime and anywhere,” Wang Hexuan, Sichuan, added. “Besides, their bullet-screen function (弹幕功能) allows people to express (表达) their opinions. This experience is a pleasure that traditional TV watching cannot provide.”

根据“A recent report said that China’s TV usage dropped from 70 percent to less than 30 percent in 2022.”可知,在中国,看电视的人越来越少,第一空应填watching,因为空前是are,是现在进行时;且根据“Also TV sales dropped from 48.94 million in 2019 to 36.34 million in 2022.”
根据“They always show up when a show or a movie is halfway through its run”可知,广告总是在节目或电影进行到一半时出现,appear“出现”,句子用一般现在时,主语是they,谓语动词用原形,第一空应填appear;且根据“TVs often have hidden fees and complex interfaces. These problems have led to situations where young people aren’t interested in them.”
根据“These problems have led to situations where young people aren’t interested in them”可知,这些问题导致了年轻人对他们不感兴趣的情况,lead to与cause“导致”同义,may后加动词原形,所以,第一空应填cause;且根据“Besides, their bullet-screen function allows people to express their opinions. This experience is a pleasure that traditional TV watching cannot provide.”
根据“Different from traditional TVs, which require us to be at home to watch, video websites can be seen anytime and anywhere.” 故填same;advantages。
根据“Different from traditional TVs, which require us to be at home to watch, video websites can be seen anytime and anywhere.”可知,不同于传统的电视,视频网站可以随时随地观看,所以,by time and place意为“随时随地”,第一空应为by;且根据“Besides, their bullet-screen function allows people to express their opinions.” 故填by;opinions。

Four beggars (乞丐) usually met at an old house at the end of the day. One day, they were very upset because none of them got much in their begging bowls.
“I only got this piece of meat today,” the first beggar said. The second beggar just picked up few vegetables outside the vegetable store. The third one said that all he had was a handful of herbs (一把香草) but he couldn’t eat them. The fourth beggar only got some dried beans.
As they sat around the fire, one of them had a great idea. “Let’s put all these things together and boil them. In this way, we can make a delicious dish and share it.” They all agreed.
However, the first beggar thought, “I don’t want to share. I’ll just pretend (假装) to throw my meat into the pot. They’ll never know and I’ll eat my meat later.” So he did it. The other beggars had the same idea and the house was so dim that no one could see what the others were doing.
Finally, when the dish was ready, each of them got a bowl in turn. They drank the hot water quietly, learning that selfishness (自私) didn’t taste that good.
