When photojournalist Jasper Doest arrived in the Transylvanian Alps to document the coexistence of humans and wildlife for his film, he planned on shooting in the forest of the Southern Carpathian woods. “It’s a beautiful mountain landscape with the forests — a very wild place,” says Doest. Instead, he found a story on the side of the road — he got up close and personal with a group of bears begging for food.
While driving on a mountain pass, Doest realized the bears hanging around on the roadside were waiting for human handouts. He stopped to observe the bears, but when he rolled down his window, a large brown bear headed directly for the vehicle and made his move, waiting for a tasty treat. “This is the shot,” thought Doest. He forced his fingers to press the button, getting six shots — one clear, five unclear. Then he realized just how close he’d been to the animal and its possible dangers.
The region’s brown bears are usually shy around people. It takes just a few meals to get hooked on human food. And, after that, they don’t stay wild long. They began to depend on humans for existence. Doest changed his ideas to the assignment after meeting a tourist who proudly told him she’d been feeding bears on the roadside in the conservation area. “It was the saddest thing,” he says. “It made us realize the bears had completely changed their behavior.”
In the days that followed Doest saw other examples of how tourists’ handouts had changed the delicate ecosystem they were visiting. As he watched people feeding bears snacks like doughnuts, he realized the story of conservation in the region was as much about people as wildlife. “It’s about how to accept nature in our lives, and how we could benefit if we do it the right way,” he says. So don’t feed the bears, says Doest — you could save an animal’s life, and a community’s commitment to wildlife conservation, along the way.
4. Why did Doest go to the Transylvanian Alps?
A. To go hunting. B. To prepare for his film. C. To go travelling. D. To interview visitors.
5. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Doest was never afraid of bears. B. Doest was impatient with the bear.
C. Doest wasn’t good at photographing. D. Doest felt thrilled when taking pictures.
6. What effect will humans’ feeding bring to the brown bears?
A. They tend to become humans’ pets. B. They have a higher risk of getting ill.
C. They are likely to attack people for food. D. They will become too dependent on humans.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote his new documentary. B. To record his encounter with bears.
C. To call on people not to feed wildlife. D. To attract more visitors to help bears.
C
Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.
Scientists have already linked low-cost, packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems. Three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health.
The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives(添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.
Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.
When fed less processed foods, people in the study produced more of a hormone that controls hunger, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the reaction is not clear. The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow”. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.
Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.
8. What kind of food do energy bars belong to?
A. Fairly health-friendly foods. B. Especially beneficial foods.
C. Relatively high-cost foods. D. Highly processed foods.
9. What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 4?
A. It does harm to people potentially. B. It can often result in death.
C. It makes people get less calories. D. It makes little difference to people’s health.
10. What is more likely to make people feel full?
A. Fiber added to packaged foods.
B. Fiber from fruit and vegetables
C. Highly processed foods like instant noodles.
D. Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Different Kinds of Processed Foods

D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods

We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done?
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
12 What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1?
A. We should not be too optimistic about the future.
B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.
C. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.
D. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.
13. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 2?
A. payment B. income C. encouragement D. method
14. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.
B. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.
C. There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.
D. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go
B. Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future
C. Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases

Tiffany Massey had just moved to the state of Maine last year and lived alone. She enjoyed the beach near the neighbourhood and jogging (慢跑) around in the evenings. It was during one of those evenings that she noticed Mrs Johnson. She’d never forget their first meeting.
Mrs Johnson had a dog named Max. Max almost attacked her one evening if it hadn’t been for Mrs Johnson. “Stop now, or you won’t get any food tonight!” she yelled at the dog from a distance.
“I’m sorry. Max didn’t mean it. He just doesn’t like strangers! You’d better stay away from him!” Mrs Johnson apologized, walking up to her. “Well...” Before Tiffany could say anything, the elderly woman and the dog walked away.
Days later, she was jogging along the beach again when Max barked (狗叫) at her like their first meeting. Tiffany tried to change her route (路线) to escape him. This happened even every time she went for a jog later, and Tiffany had had enough of him!
With weeks flying, things changed a bit as they met more often. Max no longer barked at Tiffany but followed her instead, obviously friendly. Gradually, Tiffany got used to jogging on the beach with Max running after her, and Mrs Johnson watching them run. And they began their conversation and Tiffany began to know about Mrs Johnson, who was in her late seventies and lived alone as well. Or rather, with Max, she was not alone.
One day, Tiffany went for her usual jog, but she didn’t see Max. She felt a bit upset that he wasn’t following her. However, in the following days, Mrs Johnson and Max still didn’t show up on the beach. “Where has he gone? Did they move somewhere?” Tiffany wondered. Mrs Johnson and Max had become a part of her daily routine, and their sudden absence left her uneasy.

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7.

C It makes people get less calories. D. It makes little difference to people’s health.
10. What is more likely to make people feel full?
A. Fiber added to packaged foods.
B. Fiber from fruit and vegetables
C. Highly processed foods like instant noodles.
D. Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.

12. What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1?
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

【答案】参考范文:
With curiosity, Tiffany decided to figure out what had happened. The next day, she went to knock Mrs Johnson’s door, however, receiving no response. Feeling more concerned, she then asked around the neighborhood. A neighbour mentioned that Mrs Johnson suffered a heart attack several days ago and had been brought to hospital. Tiffany’s heart sank. She quickly called the local hospital and finally found Mrs Johnson, who was resting in her hospital bed, looking weak but delighted to see Tiffany. Mrs Johnson said she missed Max terribly, who had to be left at home alone.
Tiffany offered to take care of Max until Mrs Johnson recovered. Mrs Johnson was more than grateful for her kindness. Over the next few weeks, Tiffany balanced her daily routine with caring for Max. She walked him to the beach, and he quickly connected with Tiffany. She even brought Max to visit Mrs Johnson, whose health gradually improved. When Mrs Johnson finally returned home, Tiffany and Max were there to welcome her. After that, Tiffany, Mrs Johnson and Max were often seen walking along the beach together. Tiffany realized that her move to Maine had brought her more than just a change of scenery — it had given her a new family.
