Malala Yousafzai is a young woman from Pakistan who has become a global symbol of courage and hope. Born in 1997 in the Swat Valley, Malala grew up in a region where the Taliban often prevented girls from attending school. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, was a teacher and a strong advocate for education. He encouraged Malala to speak out for her rights, even when it was dangerous to do so.
At the age of 11, Malala began writing a blog for the BBC under a false name. In her blog, she described the difficulties girls faced in getting an education under the Taliban’s rule. She wrote about how schools were being destroyed and how girls were forced to stay at home. She also co-founded the Malala Fund, an organization dedicated to helping girls around the world go to school and reach their full potential.
Today, Malala is a student at Oxford University, where she continues to balance her studies with her activism. Her story reminds us that one person’s voice can inspire change, even in the face of great hardships. C
There are certain songs that have the power to bring back memories of youth — sitting in the park on a sunny day, dancing on a night out with your mates, etc. Are you thinking of yours now? Does it happen to be a song that takes you straight back to your teens or twenties? If so, you’re not alone.
Scientific studies show we remember more from our teens and early twenties than any other period of our lives. The music we listen to during this period has a greater lasting influence than songs in later life because of a psychological phenomenon called the Reminiscence Bump.
We have fewer memories from birth to about eight years old, while later in life our minds can easily recall memories that happened most recently, although this does go down with age. However, researchers have found there is a key age between the ages of 10 to 30 years old when the Reminiscence Bump applies, meaning our memories have a particular affinity (喜好) for recalling events. The Reminiscence Bump happens with everything, but music stands out.
Prof. Loveday at the University of Westminster found there is a peak in both memory and preference for music people listened to during their teenage years. One theory for why this happens is that our minds go through a rapid period of development during our teenage years and early twenties so our brains and memory systems are at their peak taking in as much information about the world as they can. And during this period, we start to make key decisions that help shape who we are. The musical Reminiscence Bump is so powerful because we connect music to these deeply emotional times.
So with this in mind, the next time you feel like listening to the old song The Sign, there’s no need to worry. It’s probably not your questionable music taste, it’s more likely music’s powerful ability to connect us with the people, places and moments that make us who we are.
8. What message does the author convey in paragraph 2?
A. Music activates memories of youth.
B. Music of teen years has a durable impact.
C. Teenage memories are the most vivid in life.
D. The Reminiscence Bump only applies to music.
9. Which statement might Prof. Loveday agree with?
A. Music affects memory types. B. Music boosts present emotions.
C. Memory systems peak in twenties. D. Memory for teenage music hits the top.
10. Why are people fond of the old song The Sign?
A. It brings comfort to people.
B It reminds people of old classics.
C. It represents a unique taste for music.
D. It connects people with previous experiences.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To advise listening to old songs. B. To discuss music’s development.
C. To explain a memory phenomenon. D. To illustrate the quality of old songs.
B 9. D 10. D 11. C
根据第二段第二句“The music we listen to during this period has a greater lasting influence than songs in later life because of a psychological phenomenon called the Reminiscence Bump.(由于一种叫做‘怀旧高峰期’的心理现象,我们在这个时期听的音乐比后来生活中的歌曲有着更持久的影响。)”
Loveday at the University of Westminster found there is a peak in both memory and preference for music people listened to during their teenage years.(威斯敏斯特大学洛芙迪教授发现,人们对青少年时期听过的音乐在记忆和偏好上都达到了顶峰。)”
根据最后一段最后一句“It’s probably not your questionable music taste, it’s more likely music’s powerful ability to connect us with the people, places and moments that make us who we are.(这很可能不是因为你那令人质疑的音乐品味,更有可能是因为音乐具有强大的能力,能将我们与那些塑造了我们的人、地方和时刻联系起来。)”
D
Even after 40 years, seeing a tiger still fills Ullas Karanth with respect. “It is beyond anything a human could imagine,” says Karanth, founder of the Centre for Wildlife Studies, a wildlife protection group in India, where he has been studying tigers since the 1980s.
Tigers can weigh more than 800 pounds. But for all their strength, their position atop the food chain in their habitats can be unstable. To survive, a single tiger must eat about 100 pounds of food each week. “This means tigers require very large areas of land to survive,” says Karanth.
The global tiger population was about 100, 000 in 1900, but today there are only around 5, 500 left. That’s an increase from 3, 200 tigers in 2010. But the numerical uptick, he says, more likely reflects better survey efforts and methodology than an actual increase in numbers. In fact, tigers now live in less than 7 percent of the areas they used to inhabit historically.
In India, home to some 70 percent of the world’s wild tigers, human population growth and development are pressing people and tigers closer together. Karanth’s daughter, Krithi Karanth, a famous wildlife researcher in her own right and now the head of the Centre for Wildlife Studies, spends much time and resources trying to reduce human-tiger conflict.
She is now active in nearly 1, 000 rural schools and teaches children about the important role tigers play in their local ecosystems; otherwise, Krithi Karanth says, “The kids view tigers with hate and fear.” She also provides the students with simple tips, such as carrying flashlights and talking loudly while traveling in groups, to keep them safe near tigers. “If we can teach empathy (同情) — that every non-human life matters — I think people and tigers will be better off.”
12. How does the author illustrate the tigers’ condition?
A. By describing tigers’ physical features.
B. By telling stories about a tiger’s habitat.
C. By analyzing the composition of tigers’ food.
D. By combining the use of figures and comparisons.
13. What does the underlined phrase “the numerical uptick” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A small rise in recorded data. B. A mistake in statistics.
C. A slight change in tigers’ weight. D. A drop in tiger numbers.
14. What is the focus of Krithi Karanth’s work at present?
A. The population size and groups in India.
B. The role of education in protecting tigers.
C. The development of tigers’ survival ability.
D. The differences between cities and rural areas.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Tigers in Crisis: A Global Challenge
B. Human-tiger Conflict: A Struggle for Existence
C. Human-tiger Coexistence: The Key to Saving Tigers
D. Tigers’ return: A Double-Edged Sword of Emotions
D 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第三段“The global tiger population was about 100, 000 in 1900, but today there are only around 5, 500 left. That’s an increase from 3, 200 tigers in 2010.(1900年全球老虎数量约为10万只,但如今仅剩下约5500只。这比2010年3200只老虎有所增加。)”可知,这里通过具体数字“100,000”“5,500”“3,200” 以及不同年份老虎数量的对比,体现了老虎数量的变化情况,说明作者通过数字和比较的方式来阐述老虎的现状。故选D项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“That’s an increase from 3, 200 tigers in 2010. But the numerical uptick, he says, more likely reflects better survey efforts and methodology than an actual increase in numbers.(这比2010年的3200只老虎有所增加。但他说,the numerical uptick更可能反映的是更好的调查努力和方法,而不是实际数量的增加。)”,结合前文提到老虎数量从2010年的3200只到现在的约5500只可知,老虎的数量是有增长的,所以“the numerical uptick”指的是记录数据上的一个小增长,与A选项A small rise in recorded data(记录数据的小幅上升)意思相符。故选A项。
根据第四段“Karanth’s daughter, Krithi Karanth, a famous wildlife researcher in her own right and now the head of the Centre for Wildlife Studies, spends much time and resources trying to reduce human-tiger conflict.(卡兰斯的女儿克里希・卡兰斯,凭借自身能力成为一名著名的野生动物研究员,现在是野生动物研究中心的负责人,她花费大量时间和资源试图减少人虎冲突。)”以及第五段“She is now active in nearly 1, 000 rural schools and teaches children about the important role tigers play in their local ecosystems(她现在活跃在近 1000 所农村学校,教孩子们老虎在当地生态系统中所起的重要作用)”可知,克里希・卡兰斯目前工作重点是通过教育来减少人虎冲突,让人们了解老虎的重要性,即教育在保护老虎方面的作用。
Human-tiger Coexistence: The Key to Saving Tigers(人虎共存:拯救老虎的关键)符合文章主旨。故选C项。

Dear Nicole,
I’m excited to share our school’s “Turn Trash into Treasure” handicraft exhibition. It was an amazing experience. I created a pencil holder using old newspapers. By rolling and gluing the paper strips, I shaped them into a hexagonal container and painted it with nature-themed patterns.
This activity made me realize that creativity can breathe new life into discarded items. Even small efforts can reduce waste meaningfully. I felt a great sense of achievement when I saw my work displayed among so many other wonderful pieces. Have you tried similar projects? I’d love to hear your ideas!
Yours,

Lila’s hands shook slightly as she stared at the blank canvas (画布). The afternoon sunlight streamed through the dusty art room windows, making the “Young Artists Showcase” poster shine brightly. The red deadline date — This Friday! — seemed to jump out of the poster at her. For three weeks, the shy 15-year-old had been slipping into this quiet corner every day after school. She hid behind tall painting stands, secretly practicing painting skills, where no one could see her. Despite the great joy that painting brought to her, the thought of showing her work to others made her feel extremely nervous.
Her fear all came from last year’s painful memory. At the middle school art exhibition, one of her landscape paintings of a forest was laughed at by a boy. “Is that supposed to be a tree or a broccoli?” The whole class burst out laughing. Embarrassed and ashamed, Lila ran to the bathroom, exploding with emotion. Since that day, Lila only drew in the dim (昏暗的) light of her closet. Every finished artwork went into an old wooden box under her bed — her secret treasure chest.
But Mr. Avon, the new art teacher, changed everything. During their first one-on-one session, he didn’t comment on her shaking lines or confusing colors. Instead, he placed a jar of wildflowers on the windowsill. “Paint what you feel inside, not just what you see,” he said gently. “Remember, every artist faces criticism, but it’s your courage that defines your art.” That day, Lila noticed how sunlight danced through the flower petals (花瓣).
Now, holding the competition entry form, she still felt two things left her palms sweat. One was that the showcase would be in the main hallway where hundreds of students passed every day. The other was Mr. Avon had secretly submitted her painting Rainy Day Sunflowers — the first artwork from her treasure box. She wanted to run, to hide, to pretend this opportunity didn’t exist. But a small voice inside her, one that sounded a lot like Mr. Avon’s,urged her to be brave. With a deep breath, Lila picked up a pen. Her hand shook as she filled out the form, her name and the title of her painting.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

But then, she heard a sigh of admiration from the crowd.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A question repeated in Lila’s mind, “What if everyone laughs again?” On the day of the showcase, Lila’s knees trembled as she stood near her painting Rainy Day Sunflowers. The hallway was filled with students. She caught snippets of conversation and flinched at every laugh, convinced it was directed at her. Her palms were so sweaty that she kept wiping them on her jeans. Just as she was about to dash away, Mr. Avon appeared. “Trust your art,” he whispered. Lila stared at the painting, recalling how she’d captured the sunflowers’ resilience in the rain, pouring her own struggles into each brushstroke.
But then, she heard a sigh of admiration from the crowd. A senior leaned in, studying the details. “The contrast between the dark rain and the bright petals... it’s like hope breaking through,” she said. More students gathered, their eyes filled with awe. One boy even asked, “Can you teach me how to paint like this?” Lila’s throat tightened with emotion. When a teacher offered to feature her work in the school newsletter, she finally smiled. For the first time, she understood that facing her fears could transform pain into pride, and her hidden masterpiece into a source of inspiration for others.

Her writing gained international attention, and she became a voice for millions of girls who were denied their rights to learn.
In 2012, Mala’s life took a dramatic turn. While riding a school bus, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman. The attack left her critically injured, and she was flown to the United Kingdom for treatment. After a long recovery, Malala became even more determined to fight for education. She refused to be silenced and continued to speak out for girls’ rights.
In 2014, Malala became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She shared the award with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian activist fighting against child labor. Malala used her platform to call for global action to ensure every child has access to education.
Malala’s courage and determination have made her a role model for millions, proving that no barrier is too great when fighting for what is right.

A By describing tigers’ physical features.

Lila’s hands shook slightly as she stared at the blank canvas (画布). The afternoon sunlight streamed through the dusty art room windows making the “Young Artists Showcase” poster shine brightly.
Since that day, Lila only drew in the dim (昏暗) light of her closet.
