There are many reasons for this. Firstly, some people are still hunting wild animals to make profits. In addition, the habitats of wild animals are being destroyed by human beings. Finally, environmental pollution also leads to the extinction of wild animals. As for protecting wild animals, what we can do is to make laws to stop hunting them and destroying their habitats. What’s more, measures should be taken to stop pollution. All in all, it is high time that we devoted ourselves to protecting wild animals. To protect wild animals is to protect ourselves. All she had was a small purse with ten English pounds in it! Ann found a place to change her English money for Spanish money. She would stay here for two weeks. After changing her money, Ann bought some cheese, some bread and some oranges. C Our culture is the system we use to build our identity. All living things are part of a culture. Even animals have a culture! So what is culture? It's the way we behave in a group. It begins with each individual(单个的) family. Within our families we do things to build relationships with each other. This can include routines like daily housework and weekly shopping. It also includes traditions. Traditions are activities that are repeated on a regular basis. Culture is not limited to individual family groups. The real strength of culture is in larger community groups. These larger groups are called societies. Every society makes rules for itself. It decides how people should act in different situations. Some of these rules are written down. Some are just things that are naturally expected of all members of that society. Often, cultures can be recognized by what the people believe. Cultures are also known by what they choose to include in their art. Sometimes cultures may be formed by people who speak the same language. Cultures may also be known for their customs, including the foods they make and the things they do. 3 Our cultures help us understand who we are and what we believe. There are very strong feelings connecting us to our own society. Two different cultures may disagree on something, especially if they both feel strongly about it. When that happens, war is a common result. People are learning better ways to communicate with each other. The more we communicate, the more we appreciate the differences in cultures. 8. The underlined word routines in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______ . A. hobbies B. behaviors C. formal activities D. daily activities 9. Where does the real strength of culture? ______ A. In arts. B. In societies. C. In families. D. In languages. 10. How can people appreciate cultural differences? ______ A. By communicating. B. By preparing to fight. C. By building a wall. D. By making friends. 11. What is the best title for the passage? ______ A. What Is Culture? B. What Is Society? C. What Is Tradition? D. What Is System? D California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素). The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源). But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪). Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been 4 rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. 14. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The increasing variety of California big trees. B. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California. C. The distribution of big trees in California forests. D. The influence of farming on big trees in California. 15. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees? A. Ecological studies of forests. B. Banning woodcutting. C. Fire control measures. D. Limiting housing development. 16. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre? A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season. C. Dampness of the air. D. A warmer climate. 30. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests? B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon C. California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone? D.
