It’s every teenager’s nightmare (恶梦): exam time. During the last three days of the term, we had six exams.
My easiest exam was maths. All of its questions were from earlier exams.
The biology exam was hard. At first, I thought I had failed it. It asked lots of things we never studied in class, so we could use our textbooks. But there wasn’t enough time to check every question. I guessed on many of them. But my teacher said I did well.
On the career (职业)planning and computer applications (申请)exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation (展示), a book report and a class evaluation (评估). I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn’t think so much. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games.
I don’t think I did very well in the English exam. We had to write an essay (读后感)about books we’ve read in class. But I didn’t study enough.
At our school, we can “Test out” of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take a class exam. If they pass, they don’t have to take the class, I tested out of both computer and health classes.
Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes go for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it’s all over, and now it’s the summer holiday.
For my classmates, it will be two and a half months of fun without school or homework. But I’m a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parents do with their kids’ free time: still more homework.

Dawn Loggins, a homeless girl from Burns High School, is going to Harvard University in the fall.
Dawn grew up in a poor situation. Her house had no electricity or running water. So she had to do her homework in the dark. She lived with her parents who took drugs.
One summer, Dawn left home for a one-month program in North Carolina for outstanding high school students. When she came back, she found her house empty, with a government notice on the front door. Her parents had left already and Dawn became homeless.

Dawn applied (申请) to four North Carolina universities and her dream one, Harvard. In March this year, she got a reply from Harvard. It said that she was not only admitted to the university, but also offered a full scholarship (奖学金).
Dawn’s story has gone around the world. People have sent best wishes and money to her. “Make-A-Wish” is one of the world’s most well-known charities (慈善机构). It makes wishes come true for children who have serious illnesses. It gives them hope and joy and helps them forget about their health problems and have fun.
It all started in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. Christopher was a 7-year-old boy who was very sick. He always dreamed of becoming a police officer. Tommy Austin and Ron Cox, two police officers, made his wish come true. They gave Christopher a tour of the city in a police helicopter (直升飞机) and made a real police uniform (制服) for him.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants. Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment(公寓房间) in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series(系列) of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States.” Keeping up with the Joneses’ came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you.”

3.“NO VACANCIES” in English means ________.
A.no free rooms B.free rooms C.not away on holiday D.holidays
4.If you see a road sign that says “Diversion”, you will ________.
A.fall into a hole B.have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself
C.find that the road is blocked by crowds of people D.have to take a different road

Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications (沟通误解) were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her. She had raised her eyebrows. In Micronesia, it means “yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded (点头) his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. It was about 10 years ago, on a cold, gray winter day. I was walking to visit my dad. I knocked on his door and stepped into his house. Warm steam (蒸汽) came from the kitchen. It touched my nose and suddenly I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Nana’s special sauce (酱汁).
Growing up, Nana would make us an Italian dinner every Sunday. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce for hours. It always left our bellies (肚子) full, our hearts happy and our house smelling yummy.
I sat down when Dad made me a plate. I felt like a boy again. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories, both good and bad. And I noticed something, too. I didn’t feel cold any more. My heart was warm, and my spirit was light.
Dad and Nana have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every day. Although my daughter and I both know how to make Nana’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we should. No matter how hard I try, I can never get it quite right. Maybe I am missing an ingredient (成分). Or maybe, it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. “How was your weekend?” “Did you see the game on TV last night?” “Isn’t the weather beautiful today?” These questions and the answers to them are examples of “small talk” — the short, friendly talk that people have with friends and partners.
Some people avoid (避免) making small talk at work. They think they shouldn’t talk about things that aren’t important for the job, or their partners will think they aren’t serious about their work. And some people just don’t enjoy talking about themselves.
But small talk is important! Knowing how to make small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making small talk, you show that you are friendly and interested in your partners. You become a better team member. If you don’t make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you’re unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager (经理) at the Apex Company in the USA, says, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate (交流) with each other and with our customers (客户).”
Here are some tips (提示) for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programs, and famous people like movie stars, singers, etc. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events, but don’t share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too. But avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don’t just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making small talk takes practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at making small talk!

①We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? Much like colors, different shapes can show different personalities (特征) of characters in the scenes.
②Circles represent (代表) things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, raindrops and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces ... All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters’ bodies—heroes, good people—are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness.
③Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In Up, Carl, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters’ personalities. Carl is stubborn (执拗的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
④The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons—they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable (稳固的) and don’t easily fall down. In films, this personality makes bad people difficult to deal with.
⑤Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
1.The writer explains the relationship between squares and personalities of characters by ________.
A.telling a story B.giving an example
C.raising a question D.showing the results of a study
2.Why is Shengongbao mentioned in Paragraph 4?

3.What does the underlined word “triangle” refer to?
A. B. C. D.
4.Which of the following is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
5.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Why different shapes represent different things.
B.What makes heroes in films have great charm.
C.What different shapes represent in films.
D.How to make cartoons with different colors and shapes.

Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It’s bad to all living things in the world.
Polluted air from cars, planes and factories is so thick that it is like a quilt (被子) over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog (烟雾) . Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away. And they mustn’t blow dirty smoke into the air. We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw it on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

5.When someone offered me more coffee and I said “Thank you” in French, I ______.
A.didn’t really want any more coffee B.wanted them to take the coffee pot away
C.really wanted some more coffee D.wanted to express my politeness

A.telling a story B.giving an example

A. B. C. D.
4.Which of the following is the structure of the passage?
