Some haven’t been able to do their jobs at all while others don’t interact with customers the same way. Just as many services have changed, so should tipping. Some old standards no longer seem fair, and several newer ones will apply long after the pandemic is over. As for specific situations, here’s what the experts recommend: FOOD AND DRINKS Restaurant workers OLD RULE:Leave a tip only when you dine in. NEW RULE:Always tip, even for takeout. TIP: 15 to 20 percent when you dine in, and 10 to 15 percent on takeout or delivery orders. HOME DELIVERIES Package delivery drivers OLD RULE:Don’t tip. NEW RULE: Show appreciation if you get deliveries more than once a week. TIP: Drinks, snacks, or $5 to $20 if a package is particularly heavy or large. Postal workers cannot accept cash or gifts worth more than $50 per year. UPS tells drivers to decline tips unless a customer insists. And FedEx bans employees from accepting cash or cash equivalents (such as gift cards). PERSONAL SERVICES Ride-share drivers OLD RULE:Tip in cash. NEW RULE:Ask your driver. The Lyft and Uber apps let you add gratuities, but some drivers prefer cash. TIP:15 to 20 percent. Hotel housekeepers OLD RULE: Tip at the end of your stay. NEW RULE: Many hotels now do housekeeping by request only, so tip every time you ask them to come. TIP:A few dollars per night, plus $5 for any extra requests, such as asking for additional toiletries. Next time, you’re unsure whether a tip is in order, follow this simple rule: When in doubt, tip. “Tipping well is one way to make things easier for someone else.” 21. According to new rules, which of the following cannot get tips in cash or similar things? A. A restaurant waiter. B. A FedEx deliverer. C. A Lyft driver. D. A hotel housekeeper. 22. If the shared ride booked through the Uber App costs you 20 dollars, which tipping is appropriate? A. Paying 22 dollars through the app. B. Leaving a gift card. C. Tipping 3 dollars in cash. D. Offering a bag of snacks. 23. Where is the passage most probably taken from? A. A research report. B. A fashion magazine. C. A short story. D. An advice brochure. B More than 30 years ago, there was a well-known boxer named Eugene Hart. Hart was heavily favored to win his next round against an ungifted boxer, Antuofermo. It was said that the only thing that Antuofermo could do was “he bled well". However, here was an important thing. He had good qualities that you couldn't see. During the fight, Hart controlled Antuofermo, knocking him down and giving him a good beating. Antuofermo absorbed the punishment that was dealt to him by his naturally superior opponent, and he did it so well that Hart became discouraged. In the fifth round, Hart began to tire, not physically but mentally. Taking advantage of the situation, Antuofermo attacked and knocked Hart down, thus ending the fight. When the fighters went back to their temporary restrooms, only a thin curtain was between them. Hart's room was quiet, but on the other side he could hear Antuofermo's coach talking about who would take the fighter to the hospital. Finally he heard Antuofermo saying, "Every time he hit me with that left hook (左勾拳)to the body, I thought I was going to quit. After the second round, I thought if he hit me there again, I'd quit. I thought the same thing after the fourth round. But he stopped hitting me there." At that moment, Hart began to weep. He was crying because for the first time he under- stood that Antuofermo had felt the same way he had and even worse. And the only thing that distinguished the guy who was talking from the guy who was crying was perseverance (毅力). The coward (懦夫)and the hero had the same emotions. They're both humans. The important question to ask yourself here is this: How does each man respond to the tough situation that they are experiencing? Maybe you are in a tough position right now or, if not, one might be coming. How will you react? Like a hero or a coward? 24. What can we learn from paragraph 1? A. Hart was an ordinary boxer. B. Antuofermo was hardly defeated. C. Hart was believed to win the game. D. Antuofermo was gifted in boxing. 25. How did Antuofermo win the fight? A. He trained hard before the fight. B. Hart became discouraged by his coach. C. He was confident about his boxing talent and power. D. He dealt with the punishment properly and grasped the chance. 26. Why did Hart cry after the fight? A. He realized he was just mentally defeated. B. He was hurt and sent to a hospital. C. He lost the game easily. D He was considered to be a coward. 27. What are Antuofermo's qualities? A. Hard-work and honesty. B. Humor and intelligence. C. Perseverance and determination. D. Enthusiasm and responsibility. C Happiness is not natural. It’s a mere human construct. It’s a state of contentment discouraged by our genetic design because it would lower our guard against possible threats to our survival. Chasing happiness is like chasing a shadow, but the positive thinking industry claims to know its secrets. Self-help was popularized by Norman Vincent Peale, an American minister. He invented “positive thinking”, a concept now deeply rooted in our culture and steadily growing in influence. Popular films and books are full of supposedly inspirational statements about how all you need to do is believe in yourself and then you’ll be able to achieve anything in life. This is simply, and obviously, not true. I don’t think there is a need to explain that many obstacles and misfortunes in life are unavoidable, or cannot be overcome. Our ancestors knew this, and many philosophical and religious traditions are based on the acceptance that being alive is a very challenging task, which comes with significant amounts of suffering. It goes without saying that we should do all we can to maximize our sense of wellbeing and minimize our suffering, but the end result cannot be a state of sustained happiness. We are not designed that way. It could be argued that positive psychology blames those who are suffering for their suffering, as it is based on the idea that unhappiness is entirely avoidable. It follows therefore that an unhappy person must be inadequate and incompetent. Positive psychology encourages people who are struggling with a particular goal to persevere in the face of unfavorable possibilities, which is much more punishing psychologically in the long run than accepting defeat. I believe that coming to terms with life as it is, and not as the happiness industry tells us it could be, will make us happier, and we will feel more at peace with ourselves and with the world. Unfortunately, the devil always has the best tunes. 28. Which of the following statements will the writer probably agree? A Happiness is a goal that can be achieved. B. Happiness is an idea created by human being. C. Popular culture helps discover the secrets of happiness. D. Happiness enables people to fight against our survival dangers. 29. What’s the writer’s attitude towards positive thinking industry? A. Disapproving. B. Supportive. C. Sympathetic. D. Indifferent. 30. What does the writer mean by saying "the devil always has the best tunes" in last paragraph? A. Happiness industry has strong influence on people. B. People begin to accept that life is full of challenge. C. Reducing suffering can guarantee life-long happiness. D. Unhappiness will not necessarily dominate people’s life. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Happiness in Suffering B. The pursuit of Happiness C. The Happiness Fantasy D. Happiness Chasing Industry D People today are much cleverer than they were in previous generations. A study of 72 countries found that average IQs rose by 2.2 points per decade between 1948 and 2020. This stunning change is known as the Flynn Effect after James Flynn, the scientist who first noticed it. Flynn was initially confused by his discovery. It took millions of years for the brain to evolve. How could it improve so rapidly over just a few decades? The answer is largely that people were becoming better nourished and mentally stimulated. Just as muscles need food and exercise to grow strong, the brain also needs the right nutrients and activity to develop. Kids today are much less likely to be malnourished (营养不良的) than they were in past decades, and more likely to go to school. Yet there is no room for satisfaction. In poor and middle-income countries, many children are still too ill-fed to reach the cognitive potential. The world grows enough food, but several obstacles stop nutrients getting into young brains. One is war. Families sheltering around cannot risk out to plant or harvest, and some governments intentionally starve certain regions into submission. Another is disease. Hungry children fall sick more often, and the energy they spend battling bugs cannot be devoted to growing brains. Poverty is also a big part of the problem. But global data from UNICEF, an aid agency, show that although half the children with very restricted diets (including no more than two food groups) are indeed from poor families, the other half are not. Other factors, such as poor eating habits, are to blame as well. Research about how to overcome the obstacles is needed. Some argue that human intelligence will matter less as people entrust (委托) their thinking to artificial intelligence. To assume this would be as foolish as betting 100 years ago that the invention of the car would make it unnecessary to walk. In the workplace, human intelligence and AI will probably assist each other. And brains are for the joy of thinking, as well as earning money. Steven Pinker of Harvard University calls human intelligence “a tailwind in life”, helping people adapt rationally to new challenges or a changing environment. For a modest price, the next generation can have a stronger tailwind. It would not only be wrong to refuse them the tailwind. It would be stupid. 32. What can we learn about the Flynn Effect? A. Average IQs have risen fast in the past decades. B. Intelligence has been stable across generations. C. People now are as intelligent as their ancestors. D. Better education leads to improved physical health. 33. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean? A. The Flynn Effect has reached its peak. B. Global problems continue despite IQ gains. C. Society values human intelligence less. D. Malnutrition is merely a result of poverty. 34. What does the author think of artificial intelligence? A. Useless. B. Unique. C. Beneficial. D. Ineffective. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A. Stages of IQ Development B. Secrets to Rising IQs Worldwide C. Insights Into Global IQ Trend D. Whether you can go to an ideal university you usually do. A. depends on what B. depends in what C. depends what on D. depends on 【答案】A 【解析】 【详解】考查固定搭配和宾语从句。句意:你是否能上理想的大学取决于你平时做什么。固定搭配depends on ,表示“取决于”,根据空后you usually do可知,空处有宾语从句引导词,从句缺宾语,指物,用what引导。故选A。 2. —If you are admitted to a key university, ________ as a prize? —I’m looking forward to being paid for a journey to Xizang with my friends. A. It; that B. As; where C. What; where D. As; that 【答案】B 【解析】 【详解】考查定语从句。句意:正如人们所相信的那样,孩子们正处于能说单个单词但不能说完整句子的阶段。分析句子可知,逗号前后两个句子之间缺少引导词,因为It不能引导从句。故排除A选项。因为根据句意理解,需要“正如”,故排除C项。此处为定语从句修饰先行词stage,先行词在从句中作地点状语,故用关系副词where引导。故选B。 4. —I’m thinking about applying for the job in Beijing. What do you think? —________. It is a great chance for you. A. My pleasure B. It depends C. Never mind D. Go ahead 【答案】D 【解析】 【详解】考查情景交际。句意:——我正在考虑申请北京的工作。你怎么认为?——去吧。这对你来说是个好机会。A. My pleasure愿意为您效劳;B. It depends 视情况而定;C. Never mind 没关系,不用担心;D. Go ahead 去吧。由“It is a great chance for you”可知,空格处应表达鼓励,“去吧”符合语境,故用Go ahead。故选D。 5. A. having not been invited B. not having invited C. having not invited D. not having been invited 【答案】D 【解析】 【详解】考查非谓语动词。句意:因为没有被邀请参加聚会,托尼很不高兴。根据句意可知,动作已经完成,所以用完成时;因为托尼是被邀请,所以用被动式;动名词的否定式,否定词前置。故选D。 8. ________ by curiosity, many experts say, will have a positive effect on adolescents’ creativity. PERSONAL SERVICES Ride-share drivers OLD RULE:Tip in cash NEW RULE:Ask your driver. D A hotel housekeeper. 【答案】21. B 22. C 23. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇应用。文章主要介绍了大流行结束后对于某些行业小费的建议。 【21题详解】 细节理解题。根据HOME DELIVERIES部分的“And FedEx bans employees from accepting cash or cash equivalents (such as gift cards).(联邦快递还禁止员工接受现金或现金等价物(如礼品卡))”可知,根据新规定联邦快递的送货员不应该收小费以及类似的等价物。故选B。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据PERSONAL SERVICES部分的“Ride-share drivers(共享乘车司机)”,“The Lyft and Uber apps let you add gratuities, but some drivers prefer cash.(Lyft和Uber的应用程序允许你添加小费,但有些司机更喜欢现金支付)”和“TIP:15 to 20 percent.(小费:15%到20%)”可知,共享出行的小费是15%-20%。因此,如果通过优步应用程序预订的共享乘车花费20美元,那么小费应该是3美元到4美元现金。故选C。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Some old standards no longer seem fair, and several newer ones will apply long after the pandemic is over. As for specific situations, here’s what the experts recommend:(正如许多服务已经改变一样,小费也应该改变。一些旧的标准似乎不再公平,一些新的标准将在大流行结束后很长时间内适用。对于具体情况,专家建议如下:)”以及下文的具体建议推知,本文很有可能出自一本建议手册。故选D。 B More than 30 years ago, there was a well-known boxer named Eugene Hart. A Hart was an ordinary boxer. D. He was considered to be a coward. 27. What are Antuofermo's qualities? A. Hard-work and honesty. B. Humor and intelligence. C. Perseverance and determination. D. Enthusiasm and responsibility. 【答案】24. C 25. D 26. A 27. C 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述一名叫Antuofermo的拳手凭借自己的果断和坚持不懈打败了比自己强大的对手。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段Hart was heavily favored to win his next round against an ungifted boxer, Antuofermo(人们普遍看好Hart在下一轮比赛中击败没有天赋的拳击手Antuofermo)可知,Hart被认为会赢下比赛。故选C项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段During the fight, Hart controlled Antuofermo, knocking him down and giving him a good beating. Antuofermo absorbed the punishment that was dealt to him by his naturally superior opponent, and he did it so well that Hart became discouraged. In the fifth round, Hart began to tire, not physically but mentally. Taking advantage of the situation, Antuofermo attacked and knocked Hart down, thus ending the fight(在比赛中,哈特控制住了Antuofermo,把他打倒在地,狠狠地揍了他一顿。Antuofermo接受了天生比他强的对手对他的惩罚,他做得很好,使得哈特感到灰心丧气。在第五轮,哈特开始感到疲倦,不是身体上,而是精神上。Antuofermo乘机进攻,将哈特击倒在地,战斗就此结束)可知,他接受了哈特的惩罚并且在哈特表现出疲惫的情况下抓住机会将其击倒在地。故选D项。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段At that moment, Hart began to weep. He was crying because for the first time he under- stood that Antuofermo had felt the same way he had and even worse. And the only thing that distinguished the guy who was talking from the guy who was crying was perseverance. The coward and the hero had the same emotions. They're both humans(就在那一刻,哈特开始哭泣。他哭了,因为他第一次明白了,Antuofermo也有过和他同样的感受,甚至更糟。唯一能区别说话的人和哭泣的人的是毅力。懦夫和英雄有着同样的情感。他们都是人类)可知,Hart哭泣是因为没有足够的意志力才被打败。打败他的是意志力。故选A项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段Taking advantage of the situation, Antuofermo attacked and knocked Hart down, thus ending the fight(Antuofermo乘机进攻,将哈特击倒在地,战斗就此结束)可知,他是一个果断的人。再根据文章倒数第二段Antuofermo的描述Every time he hit me with that left hook to the body, I thought I was going to quit. After the second round, I thought if he hit me there again, I'd quit. I thought the same thing after the fourth round. But he stopped hitting me there(“每次他用左勾拳打我的身体时,我都以为我要放弃了。第二轮之后,我想如果他再打我,我就放弃了。第四轮过后我也这么想。但他不再打我了)可知,每次Antuofermo都想放弃,但每次他都没有放弃坚持了下来。说明Antuofermo是一个有决心有毅力的人。A. Hard-work and honesty 努力工作和诚实;B. Humor and intelligence 幽默和聪明;C. Perseverance and determination坚持不懈和果断;D. Enthusiasm and responsibility 热情和有责任心。故选C项。 C Happiness is not natural. A. Happiness is a goal that can be achieved. Happiness Chasing Industry 【答案】28. B 29. A 30. A 31. C 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章认为快乐不是自然就存在的,是人们自己架构出来的。追求快乐就像追逐影子一样。挪威人 Peale 发明了正向思考来解释快乐,但作者认为有些磨难是人生中不可避免的,最终结局也未必是持久的快乐。作者认为接受现实会更快乐和使人平静,但快乐确实对人有很大的影响。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“Happiness is not natural. It’s a mere human construct.”(幸福不是自然就有的。是人类创造出来的)由此可知,幸福是人类创造的一种观念。故选B项。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“This is simply, and obviously, not true. I don’t think there is a need to explain that many obstacles and misfortunes in life are unavoidable, or cannot be overcome.”(这很简单,很明显,不是真的。我认为没有必要解释生活中的许多障碍和不幸是不可避免的,或者是无法克服的)由此判断出,作者对正向思考持反对的态度。故选A项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据上文“I believe that coming to terms with life as it is, and not as the happiness industry tells us it could be, will make us happier, and we will feel more at peace with ourselves and with the world.”(我相信接受生活本来样子,而不是像幸福告诉我们的那样,会让我们更快乐,我们会更加平和地面对自己和世界)再综合全文的语篇架构,第一段讲快乐的状态会让人们降低对危险的警醒,第二段又讲正向思考根深蒂固,有很大的影响。第三四两段表明作者不同的观点,第五段强调作者的观点,然后用了转折意义的词“Unfortunatefuly”来说明快乐的“魔力”快乐对人有很大的影响。所以判断出,通过划线词的意思作者意在表明快乐对人有很大的影响。故选A项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章的主要内容,尤其第一段的“Happiness is not natural. It’s a mere human construct.(幸福不是自然就有的。是人类创造出来的)”和第二段的“Chasing happiness is like chasing a shadow, but the positive thinking industry claims to know its secrets. (追逐幸福就像追逐影子,但积极思考行业声称知道它的秘密)”结合下文,挪威人 Peale 发明了正向思考来解释快乐,但作者认为有些磨难是人生中不可避免的,最终结局也未必是持久的快乐。作者认为接受现实会更快乐和使人平静,但快乐确实对人有很大的影响。所以短文的最佳标题为“幸福幻想”。故选C项。 D People today are much cleverer than they were in previous generations. Influence of the Flynn Effect 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了全球智商尽管有所提高但仍存在的挑战,提供了对影响全球智商上升趋势因素的深入观察。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“A study of 72 countries found that average IQs rose by 2.2 points per decade between 1948 and 2020. This stunning change is known as the Flynn Effect after James Flynn, the scientist who first noticed it.(一项针对72个国家的研究发现,从1948年到2020年,平均智商每十年上升2.2个百分点。这种惊人的变化被称为弗林效应,以第一位注意到这一现象的科学家詹姆斯·弗林的名字命名)”可知,过去几十年里,平均智商上升得很快。故选A。 根据最后一段“In the workplace, human intelligence and AI will probably assist each other.(在工作场所,人类智能和人工智能可能会相互帮助)”可知,作者认为人工智能是有益的。故选C。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“People today are much cleverer than they were in previous generations. E 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了轻松保持苗条的五个秘诀。 【36题详解】 上文“To stay a healthy weight, most slim people don’t go on restrictive diets. (为了保持健康的体重,大多数苗条的人不节食)”及下文“Researchers analyzed the habits of 147 adults through an online Global Healthy Weight Registry, whose responses stressed one major thing for healthy living: Routine is key. (研究人员通过在线全球健康体重登记处分析了147名成年人的习惯,他们的回答强调了健康生活的一个重要因素:常规是关键)”可知,苗条的人通过其他方式保持体重,空处承前启后,与上文是转折关系,C项中“habit”与下文的“the habits of 147 adults”一致,所以C项“相反,他们练习简单的习惯”符合此处语境。故选C项。 【37题详解】 上文“Those who give up a morning meal tend to consume more calories at lunchtime. (那些放弃早餐的人往往在午餐时摄入更多的卡路里)”及下文“Therefore, eating breakfast could, instead, really be a sign of living healthfully. (因此,吃早餐反而可能是健康生活的标志)”可知,不吃早餐对于身体的不利影响,空处承前启后,引出下文的结果,F项中的“Skipping breakfast”与上文“give up a morning meal”相呼应,所以F项“不吃早餐也会导致体重增加,随着时间的推移体重也会增加”,符合文意。故选F项。 【38题详解】 上文“Exercise does so much for our bodies and brains, including reducing stress and depression as well as the risk of diabetes (糖尿病 ). (运动对我们的身体和大脑有很多好处,包括减轻压力和抑郁,以及患糖尿病的风险)”及下文“That’s winwin for weight loss. (这对减肥来说是双赢的)”可知,锻炼对于身体的好处,空处承上启下,G项“习惯性锻炼还有一个很酷的好处,那就是它会让你渴望更健康的饮食”呼应了本段主题,且句中的“more”与前一句形成的递进关系。故选G项。 【39题详解】 下文“According to the research, 44 percent of participants reported at least one “nonrestrictive strategy” to their eating, such as listening to inner calls, eating highquality and lowprocessed foods and cooking at home.
