They took me shopping for the stuff to cook them, and then we eat all the dumplings together. That's great. Now it's like that were a little family. It's made me feel much Better about my future here. I think IT would be more and . more pleasant. Listen to the next question. There is a floating area in the pacific ocean where rubbish and waste have gathered. IT is mainly composed of plastic bags, plastic bottles and other single use items. These items are slowly broken down in two microplate tics, which are harmful to see life. Thankfully, there are actions we can take to reduce the amount of waste and plastic pollution. Experts have introduced the concept of the three hours for packaging, reduce, reuse and recycle. By reducing the amount of packaging used on products, we can decrease waste from the start. Reusing packaging is another effective way, and finally, recycling the used materials can ensure they are given a new life instead of ending up in our oceans. At the same time, it's crucial that we all play our part in addressing this crisis. We must be responsible consumers trying to choose products with paper packaging to reduce waste. Governments and industries also need to conduct stricter rules and adopt sustainable solutions. Only by taking collective action can we hope to deal with a great pacific garbage patch and protect our ocean ecosystems for future generations. If you are a sushi or Chinese food expert, you are probably familiar with the neat little chopstick package that accompanies your meal. But, did you ever think about the life cycle of the chopsticks? What happens to these little wooden sticks when we are done with the meal? Felix Bock actually thought about it!
Bock, an engineer whose mother describes him as a garbage man with a PhD, began a PhD program in structural bamboo materials a decade ago. As a sushi lover, he usually spends his evenings trying out the local sushi restaurants in Vancouver. One evening at dinner, he suddenly realized the connection between the bamboo chopsticks in his hand and his long-standing desire. This realization contributed to the creation of Chop Value. “I had been trying to complete a regional program to tackle urban wood waste,” Bock said. “So, I thought the little chopstick was a more relatable resource to show how you can build practical business opportunities from resource efficiency.”
The program produces dozens of products using only the humble, little chopsticks, according to the woodworking network. The transformation of chopsticks has to go through a series of steps. Under high pressure, the chopsticks are transformed from individual sticks into a smooth, wooden material. After that, all that’s left is to cut, sand, and build the chopstick wood into whatever its final form will be. “We harvest used chopsticks in urban areas. Our resource is what others may view as waste — that means we don’t take original materials from our environment. Every chopstick is perfect, making them ideal to develop an innovative engineered material.” Bock said.
Chop Value rescued more than 100 million chopsticks from a landfill fate. That is to say that not all used chopsticks end up in the trash and landfills. Some are given a new life as luxury furniture and tidy coasters (杯垫), which is just what Chop Value has been doing. That’s a pretty major accomplishment for a garbage man with a PhD.
24.What can we learn about Felix Bock from the first two paragraphs?
A.He has a thinking mind. B.He runs a sushi restaurant.
C.He used to be a cleaner. D.He enjoys the foreign flavors.
25.Why does Bock set up Chop Value?
A.To clean up the urban waste. B.To recycle wasted wood.
C.To design a building of bamboo. D.To reduce the use of chopsticks.
26.Which of the following best describes the program?
A.Short-lived. B.Productive. C.Traditional. D.High-standard.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wood: A Kind of Raw Material Easier to Obtain
B.New Energy Resources: Way Out to the Climate Change
C.From Landfill to Home: The Chopsticks Recycling Revolution
D.Chopsticks Transformation: A Complex and Multi-Step Process
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.B 27.C
根据第一段中“But, did you ever think about the life cycle of the chopsticks? What happens to these little wooden sticks when we are done with the meal? Felix Bock actually thought about it!(但是,你想过筷子的生命周期吗? 当我们吃完饭的时候,这些小木棍会发生什么? Felix Bock真的想过这个问题!)”以及第二段中“One evening at dinner, he suddenly realized the connection between the bamboo chopsticks in his hand and his long-standing desire. This realization contributed to the creation of Chop Value.(一天晚餐时,他突然意识到手中的竹筷与他长久以来的愿望之间的联系。这一认识促成了“筷子价值”项目的创立)”可知,Felix Bock会思考筷子的生命周期,还能突然意识到手中竹筷与自己长久以来的愿望之间的联系,由此推断从文章前两段我们可以了解到Felix Bock有一个善于思考的头脑。故选A。
根据第二段中““I had been trying to complete a regional program to tackle urban wood waste,” Bock said. “So, I thought the little chopstick was a more relatable resource to show how you can build practical business opportunities from resource efficiency.”(Bock说:“我一直在努力完成一个处理城市木材废料的区域项目。
C选项“From Landfill to Home: The Chopsticks Recycling Revolution(从垃圾填埋场到家:筷子回收革命)”准确概括了文章主旨,适合作为本文标题。故选C。

Directly measuring soil carbon rather than relying on predictive models can provide hard evidence of how much carbon is being stored, allowing for better assessments of confidence in carbon markets for croplands, according to a study co-authored by Yale School of the Environment scientists.
The research team found that sampling 10% of fields over large areas and longer periods provides reliable data. By directly measuring soil carbon, the credits sold accurately reflect carbon storage. This ensures buyers’ confidence in real climate benefits and reduces costs as projects increase.
“The study suggests that we can do direct measurement at scale (规模), taking its application beyond carbon markets to other greenhouse gas accounting efforts like those conducted by countries to report their national emissions,” said co-author Mark Bradford, the E. H. Harriman Professor of Soils and Ecosystem Ecology.
To help farmers calculate the cost-benefit of soil management projects, Eric Potash, a research scientist from the Agroecosystem Sustainability Center (ASC) at the University of Illinois, developed an open-source web app that allows users to explore the costs and profitability of soil carbon projects based on specific parameters: project size, duration, analysis costs, and sampling strategy.
“This study suggests that people may be able to reliably quantify how much soil carbon is changing due to adoption of climate-smart agricultural and regenerative practices,” said Bradford. “If you can address the measurement and verification concerns around how soil carbon stocks are actually responding, it will help prioritize policies and investments that achieve soil restoration and protection, leading to improved water and nutrient retention in soils, aeration, and soil biodiversity. Such healthy soils will be more resilient to extreme weather and build food security.”
28.Compared to predictive models, what’s the advantage of directly measuring soil carbon?
A.It offers more accurate carbon data. B.It is more cost-effective for small farms.
C.It needs less time to produce the outcome. D.It focuses only on greenhouse gas emissions.
29.What does Mark Bradford think of direct soil carbon measurement?
A.It has a broad application. B.It is only for research purposes.
C.It has a limitation on carbon markets. D.It is too costly for widespread adoption.
30.Why was an open-source web app developed?
A.To monitor global carbon emissions.
B.To provide farmers with soil health data.
C.To facilitate the trading of carbon credits.
D.To help assess the economics of the soil carbon project.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Insights into Carbon Market Regulations B.The Role of Predictive Models in Agriculture
C.Exploring Soil Carbon in Modern Agriculture D.Direct Soil Carbon Measurement: a New Frontier
【答案】28.A 29.A 30.D 31.D
根据第一段“Directly measuring soil carbon rather than relying on predictive models can provide hard evidence of how much carbon is being stored, allowing for better assessments of confidence in carbon markets for croplands, according to a study co authored by Yale School of the Environment scientists.(根据耶鲁大学环境学院科学家共同撰写的一项研究,直接测量土壤碳而不是依赖预测模型,可以提供关于储存了多少碳的可靠证据,从而更好地评估农田碳市场的可信度)”可知,与预测模型相比,直接测量土壤碳能提供更准确的碳数据。故选A项。

Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials flexible, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!
Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, flexibility, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’ any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.”
32.What’s the purpose of the study?
A.To protect diverse plants. B.To grow more trees.
C.To predict disappearing forests. D.To reduce tree losses.
33.What does the underlined word “tune” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Adopt. B.Change. C.Destroy. D.Increase.
34.Which can be concluded about the plant materials from the findings?
A.Higher hormone levels produce less dense cells.
B.Lower hormone levels lead to denser cell structures.
C.The level of hormones influences their flexibility.
D.Their density affects the shape of the cells.
35.What is the most suitable title of the text?
A.An Innovative Technique on Plant Materials.
B.A Profound Study on Global Plant Growth.
C.Protecting Plant Diversity in Natural Forests.
D.Comparing Tree Growth in Labs and Nature.
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第一段最后两句“To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees.(为了解决这个问题,现在麻省理工学院(MIT)的研究人员已经率先在实验室中开发出一种技术来制造类似木材的植物材料。这使得在不砍伐树木的情况下 “种植” 木质产品成为可能)”可知,因为世界森林因砍伐树木在减少,而该研究能在不砍树的情况下得到木质产品,所以研究的目的是减少树木的损失。故选D项。
33.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells.(通过调整激素水平,研究人员可以tune细胞的物理和机械特性)”以及后文“They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures.(他们发现,较低的激素水平会导致植物材料具有更圆润、开放且密度较低的细胞,而较高的激素水平有助于生长出细胞结构更小但更密集的植物材料)”可知,通过调整激素水平可以改变细胞的特性,所以tune意思是“改变”,与change意思相近。故选B项。
根据第三段“They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials flexible, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics.(他们发现,较低的激素水平会导致植物材料具有更圆润、开放且密度较低的细胞,而较高的激素水平有助于生长出细胞结构更小但更密集的植物材料。较低或较高的细胞结构密度使植物材料具有柔韧性,有助于这些材料生长出不同的类似木材的特性)”可知,激素水平的高低会影响细胞结构的密度,而细胞结构的密度又会影响植物材料的柔韧性,所以激素水平会影响植物材料的柔韧性。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章主要介绍了麻省理工学院的研究人员开发出了一种在实验室中制造类似木材的植物材料的新技术,以及这种技术的具体过程和优势。所以A项An Innovative Technique on Plant Materials.(一种关于植物材料的创新技术)符合文意。故选A项。

Winston Sinclair’s quiet evening was interrupted by a squat grey robot at his door. The machine delivered an apology video from Karl Anderson, a former colleague who sabotaged Winston’s job application at Future Industries nine years prior. Karl confessed to spreading rumors that Winston was “impossible to work with,” driven by fear of competition.
Initially furious—“THAT SCOUNDREL!”—Winston recalled his dashed career hopes. Yet his wife Elizabeth reminded him: missing that job led him to IndustriCorp, where they met, married, and had their daughter Rachel. “Things worked out just fine,” she said. Winston accepted Karl’s apology, realizing life’s unexpected blessings.
The robot then demanded Winston record his own apology, calibrated to match Karl’s in “value.” His trivial confessions—scratching a hover-bike, childhood theft—were rejected as “insufficient.” Finally, Winston recalled breaking Cherisse’s heart at 22. The robot approved: “Value is sufficient.”
As Winston apologized for fleeing love out of fear, he felt “lighter,” mirroring Karl’s catharsis. The robot departed to deliver both messages. Watching it vanish into the night, Winston—inspired—declared: “I’m going to build a robot.”
This encounter bridged past regrets and present gratitude. Winston’s journey from resentment to forgiveness, and his resolve to create his own reconciling machine, underscored the transformative power of accountability and serendipity.

With tools scattered across the workbench, Winston stared at the blueprints of his homemade robot, determined to create a machine that could heal broken relationships. Winston’s robot, designed with emotional recognition algorithms guiding users to vulnerability over hollow apologies, emerged from nights soldering circuits. Testing staged a sandbox quarrel, the bot asking, “What hurt your heart?” sparked tearful reconciliation. Yet doubting machinery’s capacity for human messiness, he added a “silent listening” mode, inspired by Karl’s video resolving rage.
However, when he activated the robot for the first time, its screen flickered unexpectedly, displaying a familiar face from his past. Cherisse’s aged yet unmistakable features materialized, eyes filled with tears. The machine had tracked her down, cross-referencing Winston’s apology with her digital footprints. “Message pending delivery,” it intoned. Winston’s hands trembled. Before he could abort, Cherisse’s live response played: “I waited years to hear that.” Her voice softened. “But seeing you build this… maybe some fractures make room for better things.” The camera captured Winston’s stunned reflection beside Rachel’s crayon drawings, weaving past and present into a single frame of healing.

The concept of a shorter workweek has gained popularity due to its potential benefits, such as reduced stress and improved work-life balance. However, Emelia Quist, 56 (represent) the Federation of Small Businesses, recently raised concerns about the 57 (suitable) of adopting a four-day working week across various industries.
“Industries like social care present a significant challenge 58 it comes to carrying out a reduced workweek. These sectors (行业) demand continuous staffing 59 (safeguard) the well-being and safety of those under their care. Striking 60 balance between allowing for shorter work hours and maintaining the necessary level of care 61 (be) essential.” Quist’s remarks highlight the need for careful consideration and adaptation to meet the unique requirements of different sectors.
To make a four-day working week viable (可行的) in such industries, 62 (innovation) solutions must be explored. One possibility is to introduce flexible scheduling, 63 employees work varied shifts over four days. Additionally, taking advantage of technological advancements could ease the pressure 64 staff, making it easier to switch to shorter workweeks while still maintaining care quality.
In a word, it is important to recognize that a four-day working week cannot 65 (apply) universally without considering the unique challenges of each sector. We can better manage the challenges of this change by customizing solutions for each industry.
