B I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded. I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading. This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed. Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument. Yet, now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax. We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless. 56. Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands? A. She wanted mom to read the news to her. B She was anxious to know what had happened. C. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart. D. She couldn’t help but stop mom from reading. 57. According to Paragraph 3, the author’s reading of road signs indicates ________. A. her unique way to locate herself B. her eagerness to develop her reading ability C. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules D. her growing desire to know the world around her 58. What was the author’s view on factual reading? A. It would help her update test-taking skills. B. It would allow much room for free thinking. C. It would provide true and objective information. D. It would help shape a realistic and serious attitude to life. 59. The author takes novel reading as a way to ________. A. explore a fantasy land B. develop a passion for learning C. learn about the adult community D. get away from a confusing world 60. What could be the best title for the passage? A. The Magic of Reading B. The Pleasure of Reading C. Growing Up with Reading D. Reading Makes a Full Man C Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom. However, a growing body of research suggests that late-in-life learning is possible in reality education does an aging brain good. Throughout life, people’s brains constantly restore themselves, In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman studied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were making new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new. Of course, that doesn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects of time. Just as height usually declines over the years, so does brain volume: Humans lose about 4 percent every decade starting in their 40s. But that reduction doesn’t necessarily make people think slower; as long as we are alive and functioning, we can change our brains with new information and experiences. In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep people’s minds more flexible. New pathways can strengthen our ever-changing mental structure, even as the brain shrinks. Conventional ways like word puzzles and brain-training apps can contribute to mental durability. Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy. A desire for new life challenges can further boost brainpower. Research about aging adults who take on new enterprises shows improved function and memory as well as a reduced risk of mental disease. Openness —a, characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge — may also help folks pass brain tests. Some folks are born with this take-in-the-world attitude, but those who aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily out of luck. While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s not that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe old dogs don’t realize why they should.” 61. What do some people think of aging adults? A. Their wisdom grows as time goes by. B. Their memory is gradually getting worse. C. They can benefit from late-in-life learning. D. They are likely to have mental health issues. 62. What can we conclude from Geoffrey Raisman’s finding? A. Brain damage seriously prevents one’s learning. B. Brain power weakens slower than we imagine. C. Brains may refresh and improve with learning. D. Brains make connections under good physical conditions. 63. What is one thing that helps maintain the health of our brain even as it shrinks? A Doing daily routines by conventional means. B. Avoiding worrying about our mental strength. C. Imitating old dogs’ way of learning new tricks. D. Approaching everyday tasks in novel ways. 64. What does the author say can contribute to the improvement of brain function? A. Being curious and desiring knowledge. B. Being eager to pass brain tests at an old age. C. Rising to life’s challenges and avoiding risks. D. Boosting immunity to serious mental diseases 65. What is the finding of the 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging? A. Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power. B. Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory. C. Desiring new experiences can help to refresh the brain. D. Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only. D To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human. Common sense is not all that common. Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse? These three popular misquotes(戏谑的引语)are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature .To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do .The original quote about human nature went like this:” To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的).”This saying mirrors an deal people should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite –find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a making of great maturity. Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Commonsense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine.Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company,”the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.” And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people. get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that: if good excuse is “good”even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth? 66. According to title passage, which of following seems the most human? A. To search for truth. B. To achieve one’s ideal C To make fun of others’mistakes. D. To criticize others for one’s own error. 67. According to the author, what is a sign of a man’s maturity? A. Doing things his own way. B. Bearing responsibility for his mistakes. C. Making as few mistakes as possible. D. Thinking seriously about his wrongdoing. 68. Which of the following isN0Tbased on common sense? A. A man tries to take charge of everything in a large company. B. A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather. C. A company’s next move follows a good plan. D. A lawyer acts on fine judgments. 69. What is the author’s opinion about a good excuse? A. Making a good excuse is sometimes a better policy. B. Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas. C. A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty. D. Bitter truth is better than a good excuse. 70. What would be the best title for his passage? A. A Mirror of Human Nature B. To Blame or to Forgive C. A Mark of Maturity D. Truth or Excuse There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. B. She was anxious to know what had happened. D. A. Doing daily routines by conventional means. 61. B 62. C 63. D 64. A 65. Openness — a characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge — may also help folks pass brain tests.(对新生活挑战的渴望可以进一步提升智力。 故选A。 根据文章最后一段“While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. C。 D To err is human. B. To achieve one’s ideal C. To make fun of others’mistakes. D. To criticize others for one’s own error. 67. According to the author, what is a sign of a man’s maturity? A. Doing things his own way. B. Bearing responsibility for his mistakes. C. Making as few mistakes as possible. D. Thinking seriously about his wrongdoing. 68. Truth or Excuse 【答案】66. D 67. B 68. A 69. D 70. 从引言后第一段倒数第三句话“The original quote about human nature went like this:” To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的).”This saying mirrors an deal people should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite –find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a making of great maturity.“(关于人性的起初说法是犯错是人,宽恕是神。 引言后第一段最后一句“ However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a making of great maturity.”(然而,勇于承担错误带来的责任就是成熟的标志。) 倒数第二段“Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything.”(常识似乎对于一个大的组织并不适合,因为有太多的事情要处理以至于一个人不可能负责全部工作。) 从“Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm”(常识告诉你,暴风雨时应该带把伞出门)得出B项正确。“Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. 故选A。 从最后一段最后一句话“if good excuse is “good” even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth? 得出D项是正确答案;C项一个好的借口和诚实一样的有价值 是错的;从“what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art?”(认为编一个好的理由就是在创造一件艺术品,这样的社会怎么了?) 选A。
