The number of babies born in Japan last year fell to a new low for an eighth straight year, government data (数据) shows. Besides, the number of marriages continues to drop.
It was reported Tuesday that 758,631 babies were born in Japan in 2023. That showed an about 5.1 percent decline (下降) from the year earlier. It was the lowest number of births since Japan started recording the statistics (统计) in 1899.
The number of marriages fell by 5.9 percent to 489,281 couples, falling below a half-million for the first time in 90 years. Fewer marriages are one of the reasons for fewer births. Having children outside of marriage is hard to see in the East Asian country.
Opinion studies show that many younger Japanese do not want to marry or have families. They note the lack of good jobs and high cost of living as reasons. Some say the working culture in Japanese businesses makes it hard for both parents to work. Young parents say they often feel quite uneasy as people do not want to hear crying babies or children playing outside.
A high government official called the ongoing declining birth rate “critical (危机的).” He said, “The period over the next six years or so until (the) 2030s, when the younger population will start declining rapidly, will be the last chance we may be able to reverse the trend (扭转趋势).”
The number of births in Japan has been falling for 50 years after a highest top of about 2.1 million. The decline to a yearly number below 760, 000 has happened faster than expected. Experts had predicted that it would take place by 2035.
Japan’s population of more than 125 million is expected to drop to 87 million by 2070 with four out of every 10 people at age 65 or older.
A declining and aging population has a big effect on the economy and national security. Recently, Japan lost its place as the world’s third-largest economy, falling behind Germany.
8. How long has Japan been recording the number of births?
A. For about 100 years. B. For more than 120 years.
C. For 1899 years. D. For 2023 years.
9. Which of the following numbers shows the second lowest number of births in Japan?
A. 758,631. B. 489,281. C. 760,000. D. 799,728.
10. Which of the following isn’t the reason for the low number of births in Japan?
A. The number of marriages continues to drop.
B. In Japan, having children outside of marriage is not popular at all.
C. Crying babies or children playing outside are welcome to most people in Japan.
D. Many younger Japanese find it hard to find good jobs and the cost of living is too high.
11. Which of the following is false?
A. The number of marriages fell by 5.9 percent to 489, 281 people in 2023.
B. By 2070, there will be about 34,800,000 people no younger than 65 years old in Japan.
C. The number of births in Japan has been falling to new lows for eight straight years.
D. The yearly birth number below 760,000 happened 12 years earlier than predicted.
D
People, rich and poor, crowd into Owino Market. Owino is a huge open market in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. People here are mostly looking for secondhand clothing, clothes that have been worn by someone else. The clothes are usually low-cost but still are well made.
Such clothes usually come from Europeans and Americans who no longer want or need them. Businesses buy the used clothing, and other businesses sell them in Africa. The business is worth at millions of dollars.
Some people say the need for such clothes proves that Africans believe Western fashion is better than clothes made in Africa. Others say most Africans can't afford expensive clothes.
In 2017, the U. S. Agency (政府专门机构,政府内的局,部,处) for International Development hoped to find out about the clothes East Africans buy. Its study found that about two-thirds of people in seven East African countries have “bought at least a part of their clothes from the secondhand clothing market. ”
Although they are popular, secondhand clothes are facing increasing resistance (抵制) . Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has held power in Uganda since January, 1986. He declared (正式宣布) in August, 2023 that he was stopping imports (进口) of used clothing. He said the clothes are “from dead people”.
“When a white person dies, they gather their clothes and send them to Africa, ” Museveni said.
Trade officials have not yet followed the president’s declaration, which requires a legal (法律的) measure.
Other African governments are trying to stop used clothing imports, saying the business is like sending waste to Africa and harms local cloth industries.
The East African Community includes Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. It has advised stopping imports of secondhand clothing since 2016. However, member states have not put it into effect.
12. Which is the most important city in Uganda?
A. Owino. B. Kampala. C. Tanzania. D. Kenya.
13. How long has Yoweri been the top leader of Uganda so far?
A. About thirty years. B. Less than thirty years.
C. More than forty years. D. Over thirty-eight years.
14. Why do so many East Africans buy secondhand clothing from Europeans and Americans?
①Because the clothes are usually very cheap but well made.
②Because quite a number of Africans don’t have much money.
③Because some African governments are trying to stop used clothing imports.
④Because Africans like Western fashion better than theirs.
⑤Because they can make millions of dollars from the businesses.
A. ①②④ B. ①③④ C. ①②⑤ D. ②④⑤
15. Which of the following is not true according to this story?
A. The East African Community is made up of seven countries.
B. People in Africa are much poorer than people in the USA and Europe.
C. Anything said by a president in a country is correct and must be followed by his people.
D. Around every two out of three people in seven East African countries have bought clothes from the secondhand clothing market.

Dear Libby,
Here I am deep in Guatemala (危地马拉)! It’s six in the evening, and nearly time for dinner. Papa is looking at the map and planning tomorrow’s activities.
We arrived in Guatemala City at 11: 30 p.m. on Wednesday night. We decided to stay in an expensive hotel because this was our first night in a new country. The next day we did a few sights—governmental palace, textile (纺织业) museum etc. Then we caught a bus to Quetzaltenango (or Xela). It’s four hours by bus and we got there about 9 p.m. Unluckily it was dark so we couldn’t see the volcanoes (火山) and lakes as we drove up into the highlands.
Next day (yesterday) we traveled around the market and I bought some gifts. From there we took a number of local buses to Lake Aititlán, and then a boat to a place called Santa Cruz, and this wonderful little hotel where we are now. It is very cheap and the food is delicious. This morning we swam in the lake—I’m glad I brought my swim suit and talked to the local children, who taught us some of their language.
Tomorrow we’ll go back to Xela for the independence day (September 15th) festivities. Then on to a little village near the Mexican border (墨西哥的国境) on the north. As we all know, Mexico is the northernmost (最北的) country in Latin America.
Well, I’ll write more later. Now it’s time for more rice and vegetables!
Best wishes,
Marjory

Best wishes,
Marjory
PS: I forgot to tell you, there was an earthquake when we were in Xela. Not a very big one, but frightening!

【答案】范文:
Dear Andy,
Summer vocation is coming, and I’d like to invite you to visit Pingyao, an ancient town with a history of 2, 800 years in the middle of North China’s Shanxi Province, which has been on the World Cultural Heritage list since 1997.
In my opinion, May to October is the best time to visit Pingyao. It’s about 2 hours’ drive from Taiyuan, and high-speed trains also lead there. Pingyao is a wonderful place with many places of interest. Walking around the town, visitors will see ancient buildings, streets and walls, which can bring people back to the old days. One of the most famous places is Pingyao Xianya, which sits in the center of the town. Rishengchang Bank, the first modern bank in China is also worth visiting. Besides, the ancient city wall attracts most of the tourists. By the way, you can try some special local foods like different noodles and Pingyao beef.
Welcome to Pingyao. It is a place that you will never forget if you visit.
Yours,
Yu Xinyi
