Researchers have predictions that show virtual reality will make a great difference to our society. In the same way that the smartphone changed our lives, virtual reality may be set to do the same. Virtual reality changes how we view technology. Until now technology has always been something that we have viewed but never been truly immersed in (沉浸其中). Virtual reality has the power to change that. There will come a time when we sit on a VR chair or step inside a VR room, put on a VR device (设备), and enter a totally different world. The technology is largely available already, so with further advances taking place we could be about to enter entirely different worlds. Today the obvious application of virtual reality is gaming but there are many more applications as well. In business, virtual reality could be used to improve communications. Many companies have to pay a lot for sending their team to different places. As worldwide business continues, it is increasingly important for teams in different areas of the world to work together. Although the video meeting solutions have been a success, they are just not as good as the real thing. Virtual reality can offer an experience as good as the real thing without any of the expense of travel. While the virtual reality technology is still being developed we are not far away from a truly immersive experience. Within the next ten years, a solution will be in place, which will be so believable that people will be unable to tell the difference between it and reality. In time the cost will reduce as well, making it possible to have a VR experience in every home and business. 8. Why is the smartphone mentioned in the first paragraph? A. To show the popularity of virtual reality. B. To praise the development of virtual reality. C. To state people’s anxieties in terms of virtual reality. D. To explain the influence of virtual reality on people’s lives. 9. In which way is virtual reality technology different from the traditional technology? A. It reduces the need for the communication. B. It can provide an immersive experience. C. It is applied to gaming and business. D It is more convenient to operate. 10. What does the underlined word “expense” mean in the third paragraph? A. Tiredness. B. Schedule. C. Stress. D. Cost. 11. What can we expect of the virtual reality technology? A. It will help reduce technology costs B. It will take people away from reality. C. It will be widely used in people’s lives. D. It will take the place of other technologies. D John Von Neumann was the oldest of 3 children of a banker, and his speed of learning new ideas and of solving problems stood out early. At 17, his father tried to persuade him not to become a mathematician because he may lead a poor life being a mathematician, and so Von Neumann agreed to study chemistry as well. In 1926, at 23, he received a degree in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in mathematics. From then on, mathematics provided well enough for him, and he never had to turn to chemistry. In 1930, Von Neumann visited Princeton University for a year and then became a professor there. His first book was published in 1932. In 1933, the Institute for Advanced Study was formed, and he became one of the 6 full-time people in the School of Mathematics (Einstein was one of the others). World War II hugely changed Von Neumann’s areas of interest. Until 1940 he had been a great pure (纯粹的) mathematician. During and after the war, he became one of the best mathematicians who put mathematics theories into practice. During the last part of the war he became interested in computing machines and made several fundamental contributions. After the war, Von Neumann continued his work with computers, and was generally very active in government service. He received many awards, was president of the American Mathematical Society and was a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. He died in 1957 of cancer. Von Neumann made several great contributions and any one of them would have been enough to earn him a firm place in history. He will be remembered as one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Von Neumann really was a legend (传奇) in his own time, and there are a number of stories about him. His driving ability is a part of this legend. He reported one accident this way: “I was driving down the road. The trees on the right were passing me in an orderly fashion at 60 miles per hour. Suddenly one of them stepped in my path.” 12. According to the text, Von Neumann’s father believed that ________. A. a mathematician couldn’t earn a lot of money B. a mathematician needed a good memory C. Von Neumann had the ability to learn two subjects at the same time D. Von Neumann had a gift for solving problems at a high speed 13. Von Neumann published his first book at the age of ________. A. 23 B. 26 C. 29 D. 32 14. How did World War II affect John Von Neumann? A. He realized the importance of engineering. B. He began to research how to put mathematics into practice. C. He left college and served at the government department. D. He lost interest in chemistry. 15. From the last paragraph, we can infer John Von Neumann was _______. Why?”___17___ Give them time to think. In business virtual reality could be used to improve communications. D. It is more convenient to operate. 8. D 9. B 10. D 11. You only have to share your children’s curiosity. Listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. After my sharing, a boy raised his hand and asked me some questions, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”___17___ Give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer. ____18____When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers. ____19____ Once you have a child in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting”or “I’d never thought of it that way before,” or coming up with more questions or ideas. Show rather than tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass (放大镜).____20____ A. Do not interrupt. B. Pay attention to your words. C. There is no time for a child to think. D. The people who drank this water were much more likely ____49____ (get) cholera than those who drank pure or ____50____ (boil) water. 46. that 47. and 48. was polluted 49. to get 50. boiled 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文,主要讲述了Snow对霍乱病因的研究,指出宽街水泵的水被废物污染,以及伦敦其他霍乱病例与不同供水公司的水之间存在联系,喝被污染水的人更容易患霍乱。 故填 that。 “a link between...and...” 故填 and。 故填 was polluted。 “be likely to do sth.” 故填 to get。 51. The threat of cholera around the world saw a substantial decrease. the threat of cholera“霍乱威胁”作主语,around the world“世界各地”做状语,saw“见证、目睹”作谓语, a substantial decrease“大幅减少”作宾语。 故选A。 52. (选择符合中英文习惯的译文) A. What he says and does don’t concern me. B. What he says and does doesn’t concern me. What he says and does表示的是复数概念,谓语动词用复数。 故选A项。 53. (选择符合中英文习惯的译文) A. Robert felt comforted to have friends around him. B. Robert felt comfortable to have friends around him. 故选A项。 54. (选择符合中英文习惯的译文) A. I hope that we can cooperate with each other. B. I hope that we can cooperate. (选择符合中英文习惯的译文) A. Facing up to your problems is the best approach to solving the problem. B. Facing up to your problems is the best way to solving the problem. approach to doing sth做某事的方法。 故选A项。 Dear Alex, _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Alex, I am so excited to hear that you are considering your further education options and that studying in China is on your radar. Mr. Brown had asked the class to do presentations. Today was Mary’s turn. However, her hands shook so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer to the point of silence. Mr. Brown kindly ended Mary’s part of the presentation, even though she did clearly not finished. He also asked Mary to stay after class for a moment. “Mary. I know you’ re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Brown hesitated, before saying. “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Mary nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon. When she reached home that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mom was baking. Mom studied Mary’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, baby?” Tears shone in Mary’s brown eyes. She told Mom the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment. her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about everything but you can’t talk to your class?” Mom asked and then said, “Let me show you something.” Mary followed Mom to her bedroom. There Mom showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a red ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents. “I won it for public speaking. When I started on the speech team I was quiet as a mouse, but I ended the year as the winner. It wasn’t easy at first — I wasn’t sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.” Hearing Mom’s words. She imagined the scene where Mom had tried her best to overcome her fears and picked up the courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Realizing Mary’s anxiety, Mom reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the red ribbon onto Mary’s wrist with a smile. Restored and determined, Mary gritted (咬紧牙关) her teeth to find her courage. She stood in front of a mirror and practiced. “You can do it,” she told herself when drowsiness (昏昏欲睡) fell upon her. The next day Mary again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. She nervously lowered her head and averted her gaze, feeling numb for a few seconds. But courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the red ribbon on her wrist. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, and said “Dear fellow students.” Mary cast a glance at Mr. Brown who was standing in the corner and smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Mary’s face. She knew for sure that she had now found her courage. 词汇激活 行为类 ①克服:overcome/get over ②练习:practice/exercise ③看见:catch sight of/see 情绪类 ①焦虑:anxiety/worry ②受到鼓舞的:inspired/encouraged 【点睛】 [高分句型1] She imagined the scene where Mom had tried her best to overcome her fears and picked up the courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience.
