Eighth-grader Nataley Stejskal from Stillwater Public Schools in Oklahoma, US, did something good for her community.
She carried out a blanket (毛毯) drive in November, 2023, picking up blankets from different places and giving them to homeless shelters (庇护所) and organizations such as Home Pantry.
“Since she is a Payne County team leader who likes doing community service projects, and she tries to come up with one or two a year to do, this is the one that she decided she wanted to do this year,” Stejskal’s mother told Stillwater News Press.
To donate to Stejskal’s community service project, people could either drop off blankets at a local county office or call her to come by and pick the blankets up. The drive resulted in a donation of 125 blankets to the Home Pantry.

A company called OpenAI has shown a new type of its AI artist, DALL-E 2. Given just a short sentence describing a picture, the tool can create pictures in many different styles.
OpenAI had already changed the world once with its AI writing tool, GPT-3. When it was seen for the first time in 2020, it surprised people by quickly creating complete, well-written articles in different styles.
DALL-E actually grew out of an effort to apply (应用) GPT-3 to pictures. OpenAI showed the first type of DALL-E last year. DALL-E2 is even more powerful. It can create larger pictures with more information. Its most exciting use; it can edit pictures. The user can choose an area of a picture and ask DALL-E 2 to put something into the picture or take it out.
The power of DALL-E 2 has made many people excited, but it also has made some people worried. Some artists are worried that their job might be influenced if a computer system can draw such great pictures according to people’s needs so easily. But I believe DALL-E 2 will only be a tool to help people to show themselves creatively. It helps us understand how AI systems see and understand our world. It is important for our task of creating AI that is good for humans.

Once in a village, there lived a woman. She often got angry at every little thing and said bad things to people around when angry. People living nearby were afraid to talk to her.
The woman felt sad about her situation. One day a wise old man came to the village. The woman turned to him for help. After hearing what the woman said, the old man gave a bottle to her and said, “From now on, whenever you get angry, take some of the medicine. That will help you.”
The woman was happy after getting the medicine. She thanked him and went back to her home. From that day on, whenever she got angry, she would drink the medicine and slowly she began to stop feeling angry.
After 10 days, when the medicine was finished, she went to the old man and said, “You have given me wonderful medicine. The medicine was eaten up. Please give me more of the medicine.”
The man smiled and said, “There was no medicine in that bottle. It was filled with water.” The woman couldn’t believe her ears. Following four simple steps at home can help protect you and your kids from food poisoning (中毒)
Stop keeping food together
* Keep meat, seafood and eggs away from other foods in the fridge when you store them.
* Use one cutting board for meat and seafood, and a separate cutting board for bread and other foods.
Wash often under running water
Meat, seafood and eggs can spread germs (细菌) to ready-to-eat foods like bread unless you keep them separate.
* Wash your hands with soap (肥皂) before, while and after making food, and before eating.
* Wash fruit and vegetables under running water.
Cook food to the right temperature
Food is safely cooked when its temperature gets high enough to kill germs that can make you sick. The only way to tell if the food is safely cooked is to use a food thermometer (温度计). Checking the color won’t help.
Use the fridge in a right way
Keep your fridge at 8℃ or below and your freezer (冷冻柜) at 0℃ or below, and know when to throw food out. For example, the right temperature for ham is between 0℃ and 8℃, or it will go bad.

Eighth-grader Nataley Stejskal from Stillwater Public Schools in Oklahoma US, did something good for her community.
Stejskal chose to do a blanket drive because schools usually do coat drives while other organizations do gloves drives. A blanket is nice because it can help people stay warm at night, and it isn’t as heavy as a coat, she told Stillwater News Press.

A. To create pictures. B. To write articles.
C. To describe pictures. D. To understand the world.
