So he gave me a map with street names and directions on how to walk to school. School is 3 miles away, and I had never been off my home street by myself, ever. My father said, “Lily, everything you need to know is written on the map. Read the map and follow the directions.” My father kissed me goodbye and sent me out the door. I was afraid. How could I walk to school alone? On my way to school, I cried as I walked. I don’t know how long it took for me to get to school, but I do remember how I felt when I came around the last street corner and saw my school. I jumped up and down. I wished I could tell my father that I made it. My father wasn’t there when I got home and I was asleep when he got home. The next day I waited for him to ask what had happened. He never did. Years later I asked him why he did that and why he didn’t care about what had happened. He just looked at me for a while and then said, “I didn’t have to ask you because I knew. I followed you all the way. I saw you jump up and down at the last street corner. It’s also one of the only two cities in the world where big cats walk wild inside the city. But big cats and highways do not mix, which is why Los Angeles will soon be home to one of the world’s biggest wildlife corridors (走廊). Last month the governor of California, Gavin Newsom began the work of building the corridors. The cats in question are mountain lions. They live in the Santa Monica Mountains. Their numbers are unchanging. Their habitat is mostly natural wilderness (荒野), full of deer, the lions food. The ecology of their home, the largest city national park in the world, is healthy. Yet animals can be in danger without habitat loss. Genetic degradation (基因退化) can be just as deadly. Cutting through the mountains is Route 101, carrying up to 1000 vehicles (including cars) an hour. It cuts the Santa Monica Mountains off from the north. The southern area is not big enough for all the lions. The result is a population troubled with only mating (繁殖) closely of a same species (物种). And this could lead to genetic degradation. Four years after that study showed that the big cats were suffering physical damage. In the early 1990s biologists studying the Florida panther (美洲豹), found that many of the males had the same genetic shortcomings. The Florida panther avoided dying out only thanks to the introduction of females brought from Texas to refresh the gene pool. California does not need to go that far. There are healthy mountain-lion populations north of the Santa Monica Mountain, which is now separated by the road. Hidden cameras show the animals waited at the side of the highway. They were afraid to cross. The solution is a 165-foot-wide dirt bridge which would allow them to walk high over the traffic. The animals become sexually mature at 2 to 3 years and have babies every other year. So the great-grandchildren of the first mating beyond the mountains could have babies after the building of the corridor. This would probably take 10 years. Genetically, even a few matings would make a difference. “We’ll certainly save the mountain lion,” says Paul Edelman of the Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). “It’s just a matter of how long it takes.” 26.What can we know about the corridor? A.It is being built by MRCA. B.It will take about ten years to complete. C.It is supported by the governor of California. D.It was the world’s biggest wildlife corridor years ago. 27.What does the underlined word “habitat” mean in paragraph 2? A.the baby of an animal B.danger that animals face C.problems that animals meet D.living place of a certain type of animal or plant 28.Why can mountain lions be in danger? A.They don’t have enough food to eat. B.They don’t have places to live in. C.Their genes are becoming worse. D.They are being killed by humans. 29.What the solution to the problem with mountain lions? A.Making laws to protect their habitat. B.Introducing females from other states. C.Setting up more national parks for them. D.Building a dirt bridge for them to cross Route 101. 30.Where can we probably find the text? A.In a textbook. B.In a novel. C.In a travel guide. Because they are difficult to understand and I want to read something relaxing 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了夏洛克·福尔摩斯如何通过敏锐的观察(比如华生的姿势、肤色和身体状况)推断出华生的过去,展示了福尔摩斯的逻辑推理能力而非魔法。 46.根据“Watson was introduced to Holmes as a doctor.”可知,文中明确提到华生被介绍为医生,故填doctor。 47.根据“Holmes says to Watson, ‘How do you do? I see you have been to Afghanistan.’” 可知,福尔摩斯初次见面即说出华生去过阿富汗,故填he had been to Afghanistan 48.根据“Observation One”、“Observation Two”、“Observation Three”和“why Holmes knows where Watson has been”可知,这些依据是为什么福尔摩斯知道华生去过哪里的“原因”。 reason“原因”符合,且不止一条原因,此处用可数名词复数。故填reasons。 49.根据“Holmes thought that the way he stood and walked made him seem like a soldier.”可知,第一个观察点指出华生的姿态像军人,故填the way Watson stands and walks。 例文: I Can Manage My Time I can manage my time well. I have learned to do so from my parents and teachers. They always told me the importance of time management. I make a schedule every day and follow it strictly. I divide my time into study, exercise, and rest. This helps me to be more efficient and achieve my goals. I manage my time because I want to be successful in my studies and have a balanced life.
