A
One steamy July afternoon in central Arkansas, my house caught fire unfortunately. I was lost for words to describe the feeling of seeing my home going up in flames. But the panic that filled my shocked heart in that awful moment was for the nine cats that shared my home after being rescued from situations of abuse and abandonment.
The amazing firefighters arrived in time, but the chemical-laden smoke had already caused deaths. I examined and kissed each cat goodbye, extremely grateful that they had passed away gently, without injuries or burns. After staying with a friend for weeks, I was relocated to a furnished apartment. One evening I was occupied in writing a mystery novel when a “meow” sounded from outside the apartment door. Was it my mind playing tricks again? More than once I had heard, seen or felt the brush of one of my departed furry roommates. The meow grew louder and more insistent. Curious, I opened the door.
Sitting on the doorstep was a kitten (小猫) with a black coat and alert amber eyes. A neighbor walking by picked him up and began petting him. When I remarked how cute her kitten was, she explained that he had been born under a bridge and looked around for food. This kitty-loving neighbor was quick to offer an extra litter box asking if I was interested in giving him a home. My immediate reaction was a seemingly humorous “that’s all I need!” After all, my determination had been well reasoned and remained firm. But without hesitation she put the adorable kitten down. I thanked her and closed the door, determined to just let him stay until a real home could be found.
That night, as I slid between the sheets of the bed in the still unfamiliar apartment, the energetic little fur ball jumped onto the bed yawned dramatically, and nestled by my side. That was the first night since the fire that I actually slept. Needless to say, the cat community knew the precise treatment for healing far better than I.
The name Starlight (Star for short) just occurred to me because that night he brought some light back into my life. He adored wrestling rubber bands, raced up and down the stairs, darted outside anytime the door opened, suddenly appeared everywhere I didn’t want him to be, held onto the broom while I was trying to sweep, and rolled in catnip or whatever else happened to be on the floor.
In the five years since the fire, we have been through a lot, Starlight and I. We returned to the house, managed to keep the business alive, brought the mystery novel to the final edits before it’s submitted in the hope of publication. Star helped me through a massive, yet untraditional, healing of spirit. The memories of the kitties that passed away in the fire now spark only warmth in my heart and win some smiles. Every single day, I appreciate the serendipitous (有意外收获的) nature of the Universe that sent me hope in the form of a little black fur ball.
So take a little advice from my furry friend: no matter how hopeless things may become or how fixed your resolution may be, open the door whenever opportunity knocks. It just might be a star to light your way.

根据第二段第二句“I examined and kissed each cat goodbye, extremely grateful that they had passed away gently, without injuries or burns. (我检查了每只猫,并和它们吻别,非常感激它们安然离世,没有受伤或烧伤)”可知,猫咪在火中离世没有受伤或烧伤让作者在火被扑灭后感到安慰。故选B。
【37题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段倒第三句“More than once I had heard, seen or felt the brush of one of my departed furry roommates.(我不止一次听到、看到或感觉到某位过世的毛茸茸室友的擦身而过)”和最后两句“The meow grew louder and more insistent. Curious, I opened the door.(猫叫的声音越来越大,越来越坚决。出于好奇,我打开了门)”可知,作者非常思念自己的猫咪,想确认外面是不是一只小猫的想法让作者打开了门。故选D。
【38题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段最后一句“I thanked her and closed the door, determined to just let him stay until a real home could be found.(我谢过她,关上了门,决心只让他留到找到一个真正家)”可知,作者并不打算收养这只小猫,所以“After all, my determination had been well reasoned and remained firm.”
根据倒第二段第二句“We returned to the house, managed to keep the business alive, brought the mystery novel to the final edits before it’s submitted in the hope of publication.(我们回到房子里,设法让生意继续下去,把这部悬疑小说在提交之前进行了最终的编辑,希望能出版)”和最后一句“Every single day, I appreciate the serendipitous (有意外收获的) nature of the Universe that sent me hope in the form of a little black fur ball.(每一天,我都在欣赏宇宙的偶然发现,它通过一个小小的黑色毛球给我带来了希望)”可知,作者说Starlight使他重获希望,取得进步。
根据最后一段“So take a little advice from my furry friend: no matter how hopeless things may become or how fixed your resolution may be, open the door whenever opportunity knocks. It just might be a star to light your way.(所以,请接受我这位毛茸茸的朋友的一点建议:无论事情变得多么无望,无论你的决心多么坚定,只要机会来敲门,就去开门。它可能就是一颗照亮你前进道路的星星)”可知,文章主要是讲作者的猫咪Starlight就像一颗照亮前进道路的星星一样使他重获希望,取得进步。故选D。
B
By the age of seven months, most children have learned that objects still exist even when they are out of sight. Put a toy under a blanket and a child that old will know it is still there, and that he can reach underneath the blanket to get it back. This understanding, of “object permanence”, is a normal developmental milestone, as well as a basic tenet of reality. It is also something that self-driving cars do not have. And that is a problem. For a self-driving car, a bicycle that is momentarily hidden by a passing van is a bicycle that has ceased to exist.
This failing is basic to the now-widespread computing discipline that has arrogated to itself the slightly misleading moniker of artificial intelligence (AI). Current AI, based on the idea of machine learning, works by building up complex statistical models of the world, but it lacks a deeper understanding of reality. Similar techniques are used to train self-driving cars to operate in traffic. Cars thus learn how to obey lane markings, avoid other vehicles, hit the brakes at a red light and so on. But they do not understand many things a human driver takes for granted—that other cars on the road have engines and four wheels, or that they obey traffic regulations (usually) and the laws of physics (always). And they do not understand object permanence.
In a recent paper in Artificial Intelligence, Mehul Bhatt of Orebro University, in Sweden, describes a different approach. He and his colleagues took some existing AI programs which are used by self-driving cars and bolted onto them a piece of software called a symbolic-reasoning engine.
Instead of approaching the world probabilistically, as machine learning does, this software was programmed to apply basic physical concepts to the output of the programs that process signals from an autonomous vehicle's sensors. This modified output was then fed to the software which drives the vehicle. The concepts involved included the ideas that discrete objects continue to exist over time, that they have spatial relationships with one another-such as “in-front-of” and “behind”—and that they can be fully or partly visible, or completely hidden by another object. The improvement was not huge, but it proved the principle. And it also yielded something else. For, unlike a machine-learning algorithm, a reasoning engine can tell you the reason why it did what it did. A machine-learning program cannot do that. Besides helping improve program design, such information will, Dr Bhatt reckons, help regulators and insurance companies. It may thus speed up public acceptance of autonomous vehicles.
41. Why does the author mention a bicycle hidden by a van in the first paragraph?
A. To show the self-driving car isn't as able to know an object permanently exists as a 7-month-old child.
B. To make a comparison between a self-driving car and a bicycle that can for a moment cease to exist.
C. To consolidate the problem a self-driving car has as opposed to a 7-month-old child.
D. To verify the fact that a self-driving car isn't as intelligent as a 7-month-old child.
42. What do we know about current AI technology?
A. It fails as a misleading computing discipline used on self-driving cars.
B. It basically works on machine learning which is effective to train cars how to operate in traffic.
C. It is not that intelligent compared with the real human intelligence, hence the name AI.
D. It can teach cars many things except the reasons why they have engines and four wheels.
43. If a car is fitted with a reasoning engine, what can the car possibly do?
A. When an accident is around the corner, the car automatically alarms the driver.
B. If the car momentarily blocked the sight of another, it could predict and take steps to avoid bumping.
C The car can make up reasons for hitting the brakes when a bicycle hidden by a van is about to appear.
D. When you are at a loss how you can make it to the destination, the car can always figure out the best route.
44. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Is reasoning-engine better than machine learning?
B. Is it smarter than a seven-month-old?
C. Al---a misleading moniker
D. The self-reflection of a self-driving car
C 42. D 43. C 44. A
根据“By the age of seven months, most children have learned that objects still exist even when they are out of sight. For a self-driving car, a bicycle that is momentarily hidden by a passing van is a bicycle that has ceased to exist.(到7个月大的时候,大多数孩子已经知道,即使在看不见的时候,物体仍然存在。
根据第二段的“Similar techniques are used to train self-driving cars to operate in traffic. Cars thus learn how to obey lane markings, avoid other vehicles, hit the brakes at a red light and so on. But they do not understand many things a human driver takes for granted—that other cars on the road have engines and four wheels(类似的技术也被用于训练自动驾驶汽车在交通中行驶。汽车因此学会了如何遵守车道标志,避免其他车辆,在红灯时刹车等等。但是他们不了解许多人类司机认为理所当然的事情——路上的其他汽车有引擎和四个轮子)”可知,AI技术被应用到自动化汽车时,汽车能学会一些固定的交通规则。但是不能像人类一样理解为什么汽车有引擎及四个轮子。选项D符合语意。故选D。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“The concepts involved included the ideas that discrete objects continue to exist over time, that they have spatial relationships with one another-such as “in-front-of” and “behind”—and that they can be fully or partly visible, or completely hidden by another object. The improvement was not huge, but it proved the principle. And it also yielded something else. For, unlike a machine-learning algorithm, a reasoning engine can tell you the reason why it did what it did.
根据第一段“And that is a problem. For a self-driving car, a bicycle that is momentarily hidden by a passing van is a bicycle that has ceased to exist.(这是一个问题。对于自动驾驶汽车来说,被路过的面包车暂时隐藏起来的自行车就是一辆已经不复存在的自行车。)”,第二段“Similar techniques are used to train self-driving cars to operate in traffic.(类似的技术也被用于训练自动驾驶汽车在交通中行驶)”,第三段“The improvement was not huge, but it proved the principle. And it also yielded something else.(改进并不大,但它证明了原理。它还产生了其他一些东西。)以及Besides helping improve program design, such information will, Dr Bhatt reckons, help regulators and insurance companies. It may thus speed up public acceptance of autonomous vehicles.(Bhatt博士认为,除了帮助改进程序设计,这些信息还将帮助监管机构和保险公司。因此,这可能会加快公众对自动驾驶汽车的接受)”可知,作者首先提出自动化汽车存在的问题,然后提出技术改进方法,即应用推理引擎到自动化汽车上,最后对比推理引擎与学习引擎对自动化汽车的作用,选项A符合语意,故选A。

Children as young as ten are becoming dependent on social media for their sense of self-worth, a major study warned.
It found many youngsters(少年)now measure their status by how much public approval they get online, often through “likes”. Some change their behaviour in real life to improve their image on the web.
The report into youngsters aged from 8 to 12 was carried out by Children's Commissioner (专员) Anne Longfield. She said social media firms were exposing children to major emotional risks, with some youngsters starting secondary school ill-equipped to cope with the tremendous pressure they faced online.
Some social apps were popular among the children even though they supposedly require users to be at least 13. The youngsters admitted planning trips around potential photo-opportunities and then messaging friends—and friends of friends — to demand “likes” for their online posts.
The report found that youngsters felt their friendships could be at risk if they did not respond to social media posts quickly, and around the clock.
Children aged 8 to 10 were "starting to feel happy" when others liked their posts. However, those in the 10 to 12 age group were "concerned with how many people like their posts", suggesting a “need” for social recognition that gets stronger the older they become.
Miss Longfield warned that a generation of children risked growing up "worried about their appearance and image as a result of the unrealistic lifestyles they follow on platforms, and increasingly anxious about switching off due to the constant demands of social media.
She said: "Children are using social media with family and friends and to play games when they are in primary school. But what starts as fun usage of apps turns into tremendous pressure in real social media interaction at secondary school."
As their world expanded, she said, children compared themselves to others online in a way that was "hugely damaging in terms of their self-identity, in terms of their confidence, but also in terms of their ability to develop themselves".
Miss Longfield added: "Then there is this push to connect—if you go offline, will you miss something, will you miss out, will you show that you don't care about those people you are following, all of those come together in a huge way at once." "For children it is very, very difficult to cope with emotionally." The Children's Commissioner for England's study—life in Likes—found that children as young as 8 were using social media platforms largely for play.
However, the research—involving eight groups of 32 children aged 8 to 12—suggested that as they headed toward their teens, they became increasingly anxious online.
By the time they started secondary school—at age 11—children were already far more aware of their image online and felt under huge pressure to ensure their posts were popular, the report found.
However, they still did not know how to cope with mean-spirited jokes, or the sense of incompetence they might feel if they compared themselves to celebrities(名人) or more brilliant friends online. The report said they also faced pressure to respond to messages at all hours of the day—especially at secondary school when more youngsters have mobile phones.
The Children’s Commissioner said schools and parents must now do more to prepare children for the emotional minefield(雷区) they faced online. And she said social media companies must also "take more responsibility". They should either monitor their websites better so that children do not sign up too early, or they should adjust their websites to the needs of younger users.
Javed Khan, of children's charity Bamardo's, said: "It's vital that new compulsory age-appropriate relationship and sex education lessons in England should help equip children to deal with the growing demands of social media.”
“It’s also hugely important for parents to know which apps their children are using.”

She said social media firms were exposing children to major emotional risks, with some youngsters starting secondary school ill-equipped to cope with the tremendous pressure they faced online.
Some social apps were popular among the children even though they supposedly require users to be at least 13.
根据文章第九段children compared themselves to others online in a way that was "hugely damaging in terms of their self-identity, in terms of their confidence, but also in terms of their ability to develop themselves".
It’s also hugely important for parents to know which apps their children are using.

Some social apps were popular among the children even though they supposedly require users to be at least 13.
In the years of my growing up, Dad was strict with me. He made sure I made my bed and did my homework. He would call in advance to make sure there was no alcohol at the party. I got so angry with him for laying down the law. I would scream, “ I hate you!” Dad would yell back, “Good! I don’t care!” Deep down I knew he did.
One time at a party, I drank too much alcohol and got so sick. I said, “ Call my dad.” Next thing, Dad was carrying me to the car. I woke up the next morning, thinking I would definitely be criticised. As expected, I got a roasting, but I now understand why I need discipline.
Dad was 29 when he got his big roles in films. I had an early start at the age of nine with a role in a 1990s TV series, but it wasn’t until I finished film studies that I pursued my career as an actress. Like those early days for Dad, I faced lots of rejections. Working in such a competitive industry, I’ve sometimes thought, “ I can’t do this any more.”
Once, after a trip to Hollywood, I returned to Australia so depressed and spent months in my bedroom painting, listening to Eckhart Tolle’s music and trying to find myself again. Dad sat me down and said,“Alice, I know it’s hard, but it’s all about persistence(坚持不懈).”
Now I get to work with Dad a lot, which I love. We both passionate about acting, which comes from us being so interested in people. If it weren’t for Dad, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He’s my biggest fan, and when you have that in your life you can go a long way.
51. What rules did Alice’s father set for her when she was growing up?(no more than 15 words)
52. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?(no more than 5 words)
53. What did Alice’s father do when she felt depressed?(no more than 5 words)
54. According to the last paragraph, what do Alice and her father have in common?(no more than 10 words)
55. What do you think of Alice’s father? Please explain.(no more than 20 words)
51. She should make her bed, do her homework and drink no alcohol.
Or: Making her bed, doing her homework and drinking no alcohol.
52. I got/was criticised/scolded.
53. He encouraged/comforted/inspired her.
54. They are both passionate about acting and interested in people.
55. He is a good/devoted/caring/loving father because he was strict with his daughter and encouraged her when she was in trouble.Or:He is always supportive/a source of strength.Whenever she is in trouble,he is there for her.

根据文章第一段的句子“He made sure I made my bed and did my homework. He would call in advance to make sure there was no alcohol at the party. I got so angry with him for laying down the law. ”(他确保我整理床铺和做作业。他会提前打电话确认聚会上没有酒。我很生他的气,因为他提出了法律。)可知,作者爱丽斯的父亲给他制定了铺床,做作业和不许喝酒的规章制度。故答案为She should make her bed, do her homework and drink no alcohol. Or: Making her bed, doing her homework and drinking no alcohol.。
根据文章第二段划线句子前面的内容:“Dad was 29 when he got his big roles in films. I had an early start at the age of nine with a role in a 1990s TV series, but it wasn’t until I finished film studies that I pursued my career as an actress. Like those early days for Dad,”(父亲29岁时获得了电影中的重要角色。 I got/was criticized/scolded.。
根据文章第一段内容“Once, after a trip to Hollywood, I returned to Australia so depressed and spent months in my bedroom painting, listening to Eckhart Tolle’s music and trying to find myself again. Dad sat me down and said,“Alice, I know it’s hard, but it’s all about persistence(坚持不懈). ”(有一次,在去了好莱坞之后,我沮丧地回到澳大利亚,在我的卧室里呆了几个月,画画,听埃克哈特·托尔的音乐,试图重新找回自己。爸爸让我坐下,对我说:“爱丽丝,我知道这很难,但这都需要坚持。)可以判断出在爱丽斯感到精神不振的时候,父亲鼓励或者安慰或者激励了她。故答案为He encouraged/comforted/inspired her.。
根据文章最后一段中“We both passionate about acting, which comes from us being so interested in people.”(我们都对演戏很有激情,这是因为我们对人很感兴趣。) They are both passionate about acting and interested in people.。
根据文章的内容和最后一段的句子“Dad was strict with me. He made sure I made my bed and did my homework. He would call in advance to make sure there was no alcohol at the party.和As expected, I got a roasting, but I now understand why I need discipline”(爸爸对我很严格。 和第四段内容“Once, after a trip to Hollywood, I returned to Australia so depressed and spent months in my bedroom painting, listening to Eckhart Tolle’s music and trying to find myself again. Dad sat me down and said,“Alice, I know it’s hard, but it’s all about persistence(坚持不懈).”(有一次,在去了好莱坞之后,我沮丧地回到澳大利亚,在我的卧室里呆了几个月,画画,听埃克哈特·托尔的音乐,试图重新找回自己。爸爸让我坐下,对我说:“爱丽丝,我知道这很难,但这都需要坚持。)可以判断出爱丽斯的父亲对女儿的关爱和鼓励,所以判断出爱丽斯的父亲是一个好父亲,是女儿力量的源泉。故答案为He is a good/devoted/caring/loving father because he was strict with his daughter and encouraged her when she was in trouble.Or:He is always supportive/a source of strength.Whenever she is in trouble,he is there for her.。

It’s perfectly normal.” Days later, my life took another twist (转折). Searching the internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such_____29_____people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. Another____31____to my self-confidence came days later as I was watching the news about Oprah Winfrey, the famous talk show host and writer — she’s black too! Whenever I think of her story and my_____32_____dislike of my color, I’m practically filled with shame.
Today, I’ve grown to accept what I am_____33_____pride; it simply gives me feeling of uniqueness. The idea of self-love has ____34____a whole new meaning for me: there’s always something fantastic about us, and what we need to do is learn to_____35_____it.

A
One steamy July afternoon in central Arkansas, my house caught fire unfortunately.

C. The car can make up reasons for hitting the brakes when a bicycle hidden by a van is about to appear.
C
Javed Khan of children's charity Bamardo's, said: "It's vital that new compulsory age-appropriate relationship and sex education lessons in England should help equip children to deal with the growing demands of social media.”
“It’s also hugely important for parents to know which apps their children are using.”
45. Why did some secondary school students feel too much pressure?
A. They were not provided with adequate equipment.
B. They were not well prepared for emotional risks.
C. They were required to give quick responses.
D. They were prevented from using mobile phones.
46. Some social app companies were to blame because ________.
A. they didn't adequately check their users' registration
B. they organized photo trips to attract more youngsters
C. they encouraged youngsters to post more photos
D. they didn't stop youngsters from staying up late
47. Children's comparing themselves to others online may lead to ________.
A. less friendliness to each other
B. lower self-identity and confidence
C. an increase in online cheating
D. a stronger desire to stay online
48. According to Life in Likes, as children grew, they became more anxious to ________.
A. circulate their posts quickly
B. know the qualities of their posts
C. use mobile phones for play
D. get more public approval
49. What should parents do to solve the problem?
A. Communicate more with secondary schools.
B. Urge media companies to create safer apps.
C. Keep track of children's use of social media.
D. Forbid their children from visiting the web.
50. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The influence of social media on children.
B. The importance of social media to children.
C. The problem in building a healthy relationship.
D. The measure to reduce risks from social media.
