Etymology, the study of words and word roots, may sound like the kind of thing done by boring librarians in small, dusty rooms. Yet etymologists actually have a uniquely interesting job. They are in many ways just like archaeologists (考古学家) digging up the physical history of people and events. The special aspect of etymology is that it digs up history, so to speak, through the words and phrases that are left behind.
The English language, in particular, is a great field to explore history through words. As a language, English has an extraordinary number of words. This is partly due to its ability to adapt foreign words so readily. For example, “English” words such as kindergarten (from German), croissant (from French), and cheetah (from Hindi) have become part of the language with little or no change from their original sounds and spellings. So English-language etymologists have a vast world of words to explore.
Another enjoyable thing about etymology for most word experts is solving word mysteries (谜). No, etymologists do not go around solving murders, like the great detective Sherlock Holmes. What these word experts solve are mysterious origins of some of our most common words.
One of the biggest questions English language experts have pursued is how English came to have the phrase OK. Though it is one of the most commonly used expressions, its exact beginning is a puzzle even to this day. Even its spelling is not entirely consistent — unless you spell it Okay, it is hard even to call it a word.
Etymologists have been able to narrow OK’s origin down to a likely, although not certain, source (来源). It became widely used around the time of Martin Van Buren’s run for president in 1840. His nickname was Old Kinderhook. What troubles word experts about this explanation is that the phrase appeared in some newspapers before Van Buren became well known. It is likely that Van Buren could be called its primary source. Etymologists will doubtlessly keep searching for the initial source. However, it is clear that OK’s popularity and reputation have topped those of the American president to whom it has been most clearly linked.

A man accused of failing to return more than 700 children’s books to five different libraries in the county was released from prison after a book publisher agreed to post his bond (保释金) of $1,000. The publisher said, “There’s a story here. This is a man who loves books. He just can’t let go of them. He hasn’t stolen a single book. So what’s the crime? We think that Mr Barush has a story to tell. We plan to publish his story.”
When asked why he didn’t return the books, Mr Barush said, “Well, how could I? They became family to me. I was afraid to return them, because I knew that kids or dogs would get hold of these books and chew them up, throw them around, tear the pages, spill soda on them, get jam and jelly on them, and drown them in the toilet.”
He continued, “Books are people, too! They talk to you, they take care of you, and they enrich you with wisdom, humor and love. A book is a guest in my home. How could I kick it out? I repaired torn pages. I dusted them with a soft clean cloth. I turned their pages so they could breathe and get some fresh air.”
“Every week I reorganized them on their shelves so they could meet new friends. My books were HAPPY books. You could tell just by looking at them. Now they’re all back in the library, on the lower shelves, on the floors, at the mercy of all those runny-nosed kids. I can hear them calling me! I need to rescue them. Excuse me. I have to go now.”
8. Why was the man put into prison?
A. Because the book publisher persuaded the police to do so.
B. Because he stole 700 children’s books from the five different libraries.
C. Because he refused to return the books that he had borrowed.
D. Because he wanted to publish his story.
9. How did the man treat books?
A. He treated them as real people. B. He treated them as his own children.
C. He treated them as his furniture. D. He treated them as his job.
10. From the passage we can learn that the man is ________.
A. a thief B. a writer C. crazy about books D. unfortunate
11. What is mainly talked about in this passage?
A. A funny thief who loves stealing books.
B. A person who refuses to return borrowed books and wants to look after them.
C. A person who is crazy about books so he keeps stealing them from the library.
D. A person who may have some mental problems.
D
One morning, I stepped out of bed and put my feet on the floor. Suddenly, a mean little man jumped out from under the bed and stabbed (刺,扎) an ice pick (碎冰锥) through my left foot.
Figuratively (比喻地) speaking, yes.
I took another step and he stabbed it again. This went on all day. Step, stab, scream. Over the next few days, I started limping (跛行). My whole body hurt. Even my hair. I kept thinking that the little man would get tired of stabbing me and go pick on somebody else. We often take things for granted until we lose them or they start to hurt.
My brother deals with pain every day. He’s also blind and suffers from cerebral palsy (脑瘫), needs a walker to walk, doesn’t take much for granted. I had to wonder: What would he think about my foot?
Finally, after a week of pain, I went to see a very nice foot doctor. The doctor studied my foot, took X-rays, shook his head, and said the little man’s name: Arthur Itis, or Arthritis (关节炎).
I knew it well. I’d often heard it hissed angrily by my grandparents and parents, all attacked by Arthur’s ice pick when they got older.
“Wait,” I said. “Doesn’t Arthur usually just pick on old people?”
The doctor smiled looking at my chart. “How old are you?”
I gave him a look. “Never mind,” I said. “Can you fix it?”
“Well,” he said, “we can try.”
He listed several options and I chose the injection (打针). It didn’t hurt much. Not half as much as the ice pick.
That was yesterday. This morning, I awoke, took a few careful steps and … hallelujah! It hurt just a bit, but no ice pick. I looked under the bed. No sign of Arthur. Maybe he was hiding in the closet, waiting for another day. But for now, he was gone, and I was grateful. My mind began to race with plans to do all the things I’d been putting off for days: unpack, clean the house, wash my hair …
Then it hit me. Another stab. Not in my foot. In my heart. I remembered that I hadn’t called my brother in a long time.
It’s easy to take some things for granted. But it should never be the people we love.
12. Why didn’t the author go to see the doctor for the first week?
A. Because she was afraid that her brother would laugh at her.
B. Because she thought it was too cold to step out of her room.
C. Because she expected that the pain would gradually disappear.
D. Because she believed that she could endure the pain like her brother did.
13. Who had a disease that was different from the other people mentioned?
A. The author. B. The author’s brother.
C. The author’s parents. D. The author’s grandparents.
14. After having the injection, the author’s _______.
A. felt regretful because it hurt so much
B. was first satisfied with her recovery
C. felt better but could still feel the “ice pick” pain
D. was busy with housework that had been delayed for days
15. From her experience of arthritis, the author learned that _______.
A. a stabbing pain in the heart is as painful as one in the foot
B. people who help us relieve pain should be thanked properly
C. we should always remember to show our love to those we love
D. we should never take for granted the pain we experience in life

How to Survive Exam Stress
Exam time is one of the most stressful in school, whether it is high school, college or graduate school. Even the best students feel the pressure. The first sign of a problem while preparing for an exam is worry. ___16___ If we can get rid of worries, or at least control them, then we're in a much better position to do well on our tests. Take the following steps to survive exam stress and increase your overall performance as a result.
___17___ What causes you anxiety when you are studying? Too much noise? Then move to a quieter place. Delayed work? Catch up with your studies a couple nights before. That way you can save the final night before the exam to review and get a good night of sleep.
The second way to deal with worry is to displace thoughts. Suppose you wake up at three in the morning and you're worried about an exam. What do you do? ___18___ Doing something productive might allow you to sleep better when you finally do go back to bed.
Another way to displace negative thoughts is to do something physically active. Work out. Take a quick walk or a nice run. ___19___ For example, I might worry about the exam having surprise questions that I'm not prepared to answer. But I can shove those thoughts aside by reminding myself that I've taken many exams and I've handled surprise questions before.
The third option is to treat the symptoms. Keep things in perspective. Think of one final exam that causes you the most anxiety. Now think of the worst thing that could happen. If you've prepared, then likely the worst grade you could get is a C. And, if you've been applying what we've been talking about, then you'll likely to do no worse than a B. ___20___
A. How bad is that really?
B. The first is to delete the causes.
C. Another idea is to think positive thoughts.
D. Worry robs us of energy, focus and motivation.
E. How about getting up and studying for an hour?
F. What we should do is to think positively and get rid of it.
G. So just face the result bravely and make an effort to improve your grade.

C 2. B 3. A 4. C
根据第二段中“This is partly due to its ability to adapt foreign words so readily. For example, “English” words such as kindergarten (from German), croissant (from French), and cheetah (from Hindi) have become part of the language with little or no change from their original sounds and spellings.(这部分是因为它拥有能很容易地适应外来词的能力。例如,“英语”单词,如kindergarten(幼儿园)(来自德语),croissant(来自法语)和cheetah(来自印地语)已经成为语言的一部分,与原始发音和拼写几乎没有变化。)”
根据第四段“One of the biggest questions English language experts have pursued is how English came to have the phrase OK.(英语语言专家一直pursued最大问题之一是英语中OK这个短语是如何产生的。)”以及下文“Though it is one of the most commonly used expressions, its exact beginning is a puzzle even to this day.(虽然它是最常用的表达方式之一,但它的确切起源至今仍是个谜。)”
根据第三段中“What these word experts solve are mysterious origins of some of our most common words.(专家们解决我们最常见的词的神秘起源的问题)”以及倒数第一段中“Etymologists have been able to narrow OK’s origin down to a likely, although not certain, source (来源). It became widely used around the time of Martin Van Buren’s run for president in 1840. His nickname was Old Kinderhook.(词源学家已经能够将OK的来源缩小到一个可能的(尽管不是确定的)来源。它在1840年马丁·范布伦竞选总统时被广泛使用。他的昵称是Old Kinderhook。)”可知,词源学家们发现单词可能的起源,故选A。
【4题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Etymology, the study of words and word roots, may sound like the kind of thing done by boring librarians in small, dusty rooms. Yet etymologists actually have a uniquely interesting job. They are in many ways just like archaeologists (考古学家) digging up the physical history of people and events. The special aspect of etymology is that it digs up history, so to speak, through the words and phrases that are left behind.(词源学,研究单词和词源,听起来像是无聊的图书管理员在满是灰尘的小房间里做的事情。

This is partly due to its ability to adapt foreign words so readily这部分是因为它拥有能很容易地适应外来词的能力。
What these word experts solve are mysterious origins of some of our most common words专家们解决我们最常见的词的神秘起源的问题。

The doctor smiled, looking at my chart.
