B On a recent trip to the island of Newfoundland, Canada, my husband asked our talkative cab driver what made him most proud to be from there. “Our generosity and hospitality (好客),” he replied in a strong local accent. “Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, someone will stop to help. People here are kind like that.” His answer lingered in my mind during that ride with my husband and teenage kids, as we headed out to explore on the first day of our vacation. Little did I know we were about to experience some of that remarkable Newfoundland kindness for ourselves. We met Alma that same morning at the start of a long hike. Our teenagers hurried ahead, and as we walked behind, admiring the scenery, two women in sunglasses and summer hiking gear stopped. They’d heard us discussing different routes, then asked if we’d like suggestions. They looked to be in their 40s, and were both enthusiastic to share their local expertise. We listened eagerly, taking mental notes, until one of the women asked, “You have a car, right?” I explained that there were no cars available during our week on the island, so we had to rely on cabs instead. “Oh no,” she said, “you need a car.” And then, as casually as if offering a piece of chewing gum (口香糖), she said: “Take mine!” Dumbfounded, my husband and I just smiled in disbelief. “Why not?” She insisted. “You need a car to get to know all these places.” “But you don’t even know us,” I said. “That doesn’t matter,” she continued with absolute determination. Stunned, I looked over at her friend, who shrugged and said, “That’s Alma.” Forty minutes of talking later, my family climbed into Alma’s car. We spent the rest of our vacation discovering different areas of this beautiful island But it wasn’t the groups of whales we saw or the vast areas of woodland, that made this place so memorable. Instead, it was the act of kindness from a complete stranger that made us realize how special Newfoundland really was. Next year, there’s no doubt where we’ll be taking our summer vacation. Who knows what act of kindness we’ll meet then? 24. What problem did the author’s family have in Newfoundland? A. They couldn’t understand the local accent. B. Their car broke down on the first day. C. They got lost during a hike. D. They didn’t have a car. 25. The underlined word “dumbfounded” in Paragraph 12 is closest in meaning to ______. A. shocked B. satisfied C. relieved D. embarrassed 26. What impressed the author most during her stay in Newfoundland? A. The talkative cab driver. B. The whales swimming. C. The beautiful scenery of the island. D. The help from an enthusiastic stranger. 27. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph? A. She is looking forward to meeting Alma once more. B. She expects to visit Newfoundland again. C. She hasn’t decided where to go next year. D. She also wants to be kind to others during vacation. C You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella. The designer says he come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp.” he said. The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed. According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter. 28. Belyaev created the lampbrella aiming to _______. A. predict a heavy rain B. help people avoid getting wet in the rain C. check the weather forecast D. remind people to take an umbrella 29. How does the lampbrella work? A. Electric motor can open or close the sensors on demand. B. Electric motor is controlled by the rain sensor to open the canopy. C. Sensors offer pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. D. Sensors can work only three minutes. 30. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the lampbrella? A Its moving speed. B. Its appearance. C. Its installation. D. Its safey. 31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The designer is confident that his creation is practical. B. The designer will open a company in Moscow. C. The lampbrella could be put into immediate production. D. The lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow. D A tragic case of Kitty Genovese, who was killed, happened in New York in 1964. However, subsequent investigations concluded that several people saw or heard what was happening, but did nothing to intervene. This has been termed the “bystander effect” — a well-known psychological phenomenon where individuals are less likely to offer help to someone when other people are present. The more people there are, the less likely they are to help. None of us like to think we’d walk on by when someone needed our help. But sometimes we behave in ways we wouldn’t expect when faced with a situation we are unsure about. While we might like to think we would rush to someone’s assistance, we know from studies that often people hang back. Research from the British Heart Foundation has suggested that a third of people would not give first aid if they saw someone collapse on the street, with some even admitting they wouldn’t call an ambulance. There are various factors contributing to this effect — people think that others will get involved. Afterwards people often say they did not feel qualified or important enough to be the one to intervene. It is also partly down to “pluralistic ignorance” — since everyone is not reacting to the emergency, they don’t need to either; it’s not serious because no one else is doing anything. Other studies have shown that once people are aware of the bystander effect, they are less likely to be affected by it. Self-awareness is the best solution to it. When facing an emergency, think to yourself how you would behave if you were on your own. Ignore everyone else and go with your gut (直觉) — If you’d run for help, do it. If that’s how you would have behaved when you were on your own, then that’s probably the right course of action. The worst that can happen is that you’ll look a little foolish at having overreacted. You might also save someone’s life. 32. What is the author’s purpose of telling about the case of Genovese? A. To show the high frequency of killing. B. To highlight the indifference of bystanders. C. To introduce the topic of the passage. D. To lead to the investigations. 33. What can we know from paragraph 2? A. No one would like to admit the truth. B. People tend to help when no people are present. C. Few people will encounter uncertain situations. D. Many people will not rush to help in an emergency. 34. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The consequences of the phenomenon. B. The reactions to different accidents. C. The seriousness of an emergency. D. The reasons for not helping. 35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. Don’t Be A Bystander B. Life-Saving Response C. Importance of First Aid D. They both had great passion for dancing and dreamed for bigger stages. They were both friends and competitors. They had similar taste in music, and had similar dressing styles. They had both devoted themselves to preparing for the upcoming contest. Grace’s journey to the competition was marked by countless hours of practice and determination. She would rise before the sun, and the studio lights were her only company. Every movement was perfected with unwavering mind. She knew that this competition wasn’t just about personal success; it was also about upholding her school’s honor. “Grace, you’re incredible!” Grace’s dance instructor, Mrs. Anderson, often praised her. “Your hard work will pay off.” Ellen had been practicing hard for this competition as well. Her love for dance was her driving force. After school, she would head straight to the dance studio, tirelessly perfecting every step. Her dance shoes had become a part of her feet, and her heart burned with a strong desire for victory. “Ellen, you’re a natural,” her fellow dancers would often say. “You’ve got this!” The day of the competition finally arrived, and there were five competitors fighting for the championship title. Ellen was scheduled to perform before Grace. As Ellen stood backstage, the butterflies in her stomach seemed to have turned into a whirlwind. She practiced every move once again but suddenly broke her dress with a sharp movement. Panic set in as her mind raced for a solution. “Ellen, you’re up next!” the stage manager announced. In the dimly lit backstage area, Grace overheard Ellen’s whispers to her friend, Sarah. “I broke my dancing dress, Sarah,” Ellen’s voice trembled. “What am I going to do?” Grace’s heart sank as she overheard the conversation. Grace knew her dress would fit Ellen perfectly, but she hesitated. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tears of thanks welled up in Ellen’s eyes as she put on Grace’s dress. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$英语听力第一节听下面5段对话。 What do you think we need to buy for our new flat? We spent the rest of our vacation discovering different areas of this beautiful island. But it wasn’t the groups of whales we saw, or the vast areas of woodland, that made this place so memorable. D 25. A 26. D 27. 由第十段中的“I explained that there were no cars available during our week on the island, so we had to rely on cabs instead.(我解释道,我们周末来岛上度假没有汽车,我们只能打出租车)”可知,作者一家人在纽芬兰岛上旅行时遇到的问题是,他们没有一辆车。 并且此处单词与第16段中的stunned(使震惊,目瞪口呆)呼应。 故选A。 Instead, it was the act of kindness from a complete stranger that made us realize how special Newfoundland really was.(取而代之,是一个陌生人的善意之举让我意识到纽芬兰的真正特别之处。) Next year, there’s no doubt where we’ll be taking our summer vacation. Who knows what act of kindness we'll meet then?(毫无疑问我们明年会去哪里过暑假。 C You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. A. Its moving speed. B 29. B 30. D 31. 由第一段中“But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. (但设计师米哈伊尔·贝利亚耶夫并不认为出门前忘记查看天气预报会导致你淋湿)”,第二段中“Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp. 我觉得在路灯上加一个雨棚是合适的)”和第三段中“Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. 由第三段中“It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. 由第五段“According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. 由最后一段“While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter. 故选A项。 D A tragic case of Kitty Genovese, who was killed, happened in New York in 1964. A. It wasn’t what I really wanted to be doing with my life and that was what frustrated me the most. Here I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn’t even really want to do. Various people said how terrible my system was and that it would never work.(有一次我去参加一个会议,遭到了言语攻击。 B“I can give you a personal example.(我可以给你举一个我个人的例子。)” 【37题详解】 根据上文“That didn’t bother me too much.(这并没有太让我烦恼。)”可知,被别人攻击这件事并没有让作者太烦恼;而空后“That really upset me and at the time, I was absolutely furious (暴怒的) at that comment.(这真的让我很心烦意乱,当时,我对这样的评价简直是怒不可遏。)” D“But one of them said, “Your job is pointless.”(但其中有个人说:“你的工作毫无意义。”)”中的“Your job is pointless”即下文提到的“that comment”,而且but表示转折,说明这个评论让作者生气,符合上下文逻辑。故选D。 【38题详解】 根据上文内容“I was so angry and upset that they should treat me that way. Once I took the time to think about what was really making me so mad, I learned a lot.(我非常生气和沮丧,他们竟然这样对待我。 G“I realized that the comment was truer than I wanted to admit.(我意识到,这个评价比我愿意承认的更接近事实。)” 【39题详解】 根据上文“It wasn’t what I really wanted to be doing with my life and that was what frustrated me the most. Here I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn’t even really want to do. I was using it as a crutch because I didn’t have confidence in myself to take the scary road towards what I really wanted to do.(这并不是我真正想在生活中从事的工作,而这才是最让我感到挫败的地方。 F“As soon as I realized that, a lot of my anger just melted away.(一旦我意识到这一点,我的很多愤怒就消散了)”承接上文作者对自己工作和自身情况的认识,“愤怒消散”与前文的愤怒形成对比,符合逻辑。故选F。 【40题详解】 根据上文“I now consider this incident as a great gift.(现在我把这件事看作是一份珍贵的礼物。)” E“It got me back on track and moving in my desired direction.(它让我回到正轨,并朝着我期望的方向前进)”中的“it”代指上文提到的“this incident”,而“回到正轨并朝着期望方向前进”解释了为什么这件事是很棒的礼物,符合语境。 Jamil Jan Kochai moved to America from Afghanistan at age one. You can wear my dress on stage.” Ellen’s eyes widened in surprise. “Grace, you would do that for me?” she asked, her voice trembling.“Of course, Ellen,” Grace replied, a gentle smile on her face. “Now, go out there and show them what you’ve got.” Tears of thanks welled up in Ellen’s eyes as she put on Grace’s dress. She knew that she had let herself down and almost gave up, but Grace’s act of kindness restored her faith in herself. She vowed to herself that she would not let Grace down and would do her best in the competition. Finally, Ellen won the competition with her outstanding performance. But what made her happiest was having such a good friend. 词汇激活 行为类 ①靠近: approach/get close to ②回答:reply/answer/respond 情绪类 ①惊讶地:in surprise/in amazement ②高兴的:happy/delighted/joyful 【点睛】[高分句型1]However, Grace also understood that sometimes in competition, we should put aside our differences and help each other.
