(2024·辽宁葫芦岛高二联考)
Four Inventions from Women
Though it wasn't always easy to get patents or the credit, women are responsible for many items we use today. Below are some of them.
A Solar House
In 1947, Mária Telkes, together with Eleanor Raymond, invented the world's first modern residence heated with solar energy. The house was called Dover Sun House, built in Dover, Massachusetts, in 1948. She also invented other devices capable of storing energy captured from sunlight, and her remarkable achievements made a difference to current solar industry.
A Computer Term
Grace Hopper programmed for the earliest computer machines. Interestingly, Hopper's first major invention in the field of software design was the creation of a famous computer term, “bug”. In 1947, she found a small moth in the Mark II computer, and it was this little bug that was “jamming (卡住)” the machine, Hopper jokingly referred to “failing to work” as a “bug”, a strange term that has since developed into a computer industry term.
Dish Washing Machine
Along with another engineer, Josephine Cochrane invented the first handpowered dishwasher. Patented in 1886, the first dish washing machine combined high water pressure, a wheel, a boiler, and a wire framework like the ones still used for dish drying. As its inventor, Josephine Cochrane never used dishwasher herself, but it made others' life easier.
Home Security System
You might be surprised to discover that the first home security system was actually invented by Marie Van Brittan Brown in 1966. Alongside her husband, she created a system containing a sliding camera, a twoway microphone, TV monitors. There was also an emergency button with which the police could be contacted in case of emergencies, and a remote control used to unlock doors.
21.Which of the following was created by a woman alone?
A.The solar house. B.The computer term.
C.The home security system. D.The dish washing machine.
22.What powered Josephine Cochrane's dish washing machine?
A.Solar energy. B.Electricity. C.Air pressure. D.Manpower.
23.How can we call the police when using the first home security system?
A.By turning to a remote control. B.By using a new twoway microphone.
C.By pressing on the emergency button. D.By calling for help into sliding camera.

(2024·潍坊高二统考)Jenn Larson was just 14 years old when she took over the bookkeeping for her family's dairy farm near Firth, Idaho. She soon saw firsthand how challenging it was for her parents, who lacked any college education, to properly manage the unpredictable earnings of farming. This started a lifelong passion for finance, and it led her down an unexpected path to becoming a role model she never had.
Yet, such ambitions ran in obvious contrast to everything familiar to her. “I didn't have any advisors,” Larson says. “I didn't have anyone to look up to for a professional example. All the women I associated with were stayathome moms.” Despite having parents who couldn't fully understand her ambitions, Larson went to the BYU Marriott School, where she earned a business degree and focused much of her coursework on international finance.
Larson worked for seven years as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, advising clients on important financial decisions. Larson returned to BYU Marriott in 2008 to earn an MBA, and accepted a position in the school as an assistant professor following her graduation. For more than a decade, Larson has taught finance classes to undergraduate and MBA students. While she teaches finance, Larson tries to help her students see how mastering finance principles can also impact their personal lives.
Constantly balancing motherhood and work, Larson makes adjustments to the way she teaches. She gave birth to her first three children in three years while teaching at BYU Marriott, wondering at times if labor might start while in front of a class full of students. During the pandemic, Larson taught online classes from her dining room table while taking care of a newborn and other young children at home.
As a female instructor in the often maledominated finance industry, Larson works to inspire other women who seek a similar path to hers. Larson became the role model that she never had—the example that a 14yearold girl staring at a farming expense sheet couldn't find. Now, Larson's children and students will always have that example.
24.What motivated Larson to major in finance?
A.Her experience of managing accounts. B.Her strong desire for college education.
C.The high expectations from her parents. D.The challenging labor on her dairy farm.
25.What problem did Larson face when she decided to study finance?
A.She had no one to ask for advice. B.She was unsure about the coursework.
C.She was misunderstood by her neighbours. D.She was unfamiliar with everything at school.
26.What does the underlined word “labor” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.The work of looking after a baby. B.The process of dealing with students.
C.The process of giving birth to a baby. D.The work of adjusting teaching methods.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Following Your Interest B.Balancing Work and Family
C.Becoming Your Own Role Model D.Seeking a Way to Become a Role Model

“I am not crazy,”says Dr.William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture(针灸)on a rabbit.“I am ahead of my time.”If he seems a little defensive,it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he'll have the last laugh. He's one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians(兽医)now practicing“holistic”medicine—combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic(按摩疗法)and herbal medicine.
Farber,a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain.He tried musclerelaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture,an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So,after studying the techniques for a couple of years,he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale's dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack,Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber's treatments eased her dog's suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse,Nappy,“moves more easily and rides more comfortably”after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication,he may be right:Since 1982,membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700.“Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,”he says.“I will do anything to help an animal. That's my job.”
28.What do some of Farber's coworkers think of him?
A.He's odd. B.He's strict. C.He's brave. D.He's rude.
29.Why did Farber decide to try acupuncture on pets?
A.He was trained in it at university. B.He was inspired by another veterinarian.
C.He benefited from it as a patient. D.He wanted to save money for pet owners.
30.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Steps of a chiropractic treatment. B.The complexity of veterinarians' work.
C.Examples of rare animal diseases. D.The effectiveness of holistic medicine.
31.Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association?
A.To prove Farber's point. B.To emphasize its importance.
C.To praise veterinarians. D.To advocate animal protection.

(2024·福建联考)Leaving our hostel in the centre of Phnom Penh, we climb inside our small Tuk Tuk cabin attached to the back of Kiwi's motorbike ; a bottle of water in one hand and a surgeonstyle mask in the other we set off on our 45minute commute. It is a familiar start to the day for me and two other volunteers. We are setting out to work in an orphanage just outside Cambodia's capital city.
The morning rush hour in Phnom Penh is crowded and chaotic. Kiwi directs our path between the trucks,4×4 Lexus' and countless motorbikes, which often carry entire families. We reach the dusty highway, masks and sunshades firmly in place to protect our eyes and lungs. A mixture of concrete buildings and huts exist along the side of the road among a sea of rubbish. The residents often smile and wave as we pass by.
We turn onto a farm track. The last part of our journey is a roller coaster, jumping out of potholes(路面坑洼) and turning to avoid falling off the sinking road. We pass huts on stilts(高跷),skinny cows and farm yards where children jump and scream upon seeing us. The stream along the side of the road is almost bone dry and vegetation is rare across the fields.
Finally we arrive at our destination: the oasis(令人快慰的地方) is Samrong Farm. By the gates, a group of 10yearold children compete in the area of marbles. We're greeted by the shouts of “Cha, cha(short for ‘teacher’)!”from several other kids gathering round. As we climb out of our vehicle, the sun is already hot and the oasis is as dry as the fields surrounding it. In such conditions you would imagine life to be hard, but you wouldn't know it to see the warm smiles and hear the laughter of the residents at Samrong Orphanage.
Compared to children in the Western World they have little and yet they give so much in generosity of spirit and enthusiasm for every day. Despite the journey, it is so good to arrive at work in the morning.
32.Where was the author going?
A.To Samrong Orphanage. B.To the oasis of Samrong.
C.To the capital of Cambodia. D.To the centre of Phnom Penh.
33.What word can be used to describe Kiwi?
A.Disciplined. B.Confident. C.Devoted. D.Ambitious.
34.What did they see along the farm track?
A.Dry bones. B.Shy children.
C.Almost bare fields. D.A roller coaster beside it.
35.What can we learn from the story?
A.Enthusiasm of the children. B.Comfort of riding a motorbike.
C.Beauty of working in the morning. D.Pleasure of being in a different culture.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
My friend James did some firstaid training last week to learn the fundamentals of the CPR. And he asked if I'd ever done the same.
“Yes,” I said, “...and no.”
Because, yes, I've attended several resuscitation (复苏) sessions over the years. __36__ In fact, despite being shown all the key information at various points in my career, I don't think I can remember any of it now.
What's the problem? Every time I've had this type of training, it's been a perfectly good opportunity to learn:an important topic, taught well, in a focused environment, with plenty to see, hear and do. I've always taken it seriously, too, and been focused. And I've always come away with a wealth of information.__37__
Here's what I should have done—and what you can do now—to make sure any training doesn't go to waste.
•__38__ You might be surprised to find that you've got some foundations of knowledge to build on. Pretesting sparks your curiosity and puts you in a frame of mind to remember.
• Challenge your recall later.__39__ If it's hard to remember, but just about possible with effort, then that's perfect. You need that little bit of struggle to start embedding (把……嵌入) information in your brain.
• Keep coming back. Put a note in your diary to test yourself again in a week, then ten days after that, then a month on…leaving longer gaps between checks.__40__
Talking to James has inspired me to book myself onto yet another CPR course. But this time I'm determined to do it right. Remember that it's the next day when the real training begins.
A.Test yourself before you start.
B.Wait a day, then see how much you still know.
C.Stay curious about what you are eager to know.
D.All the basic information has stuck in your mind.
E.But no, I don't exactly feel “trained” to save lives.
F.Yet virtually nothing has ever made it to my longterm memory.
G.Use the questions you wrote on the day to keep challenging yourself.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Daniel got a job as a delivery man to work his way through college. His parents couldn't save up all the money he needed to get into law school, so since he was 16, he has been taking summer jobs to earn extra money.
The boy usually wakes up at 5 a.m. in summer or winter, riding his rusty (生锈的) old bike delivering packages. It isn't an easy job, especially during winter. Besides that, his old bike is slow, making things harder. But that isn't a problem for Daniel. “Come on, boy! We can do this,”he says to himself.
Daniel's route is always the same and people in the neighborhood have already known him. He calls them by their names, and they often wave and greet him as he passes.
One day, Daniel came to McReynolds' house. He parked his bike at the doorstep. He rang the doorbell but no one answered. He tried again, still no answer. Then he left the parcel at the doorstep.
As Daniel jumped back on his bike, he noticed his bike broken down. “Bad luck!”But as he turned around, he saw a strange man secretly looked around and placed a package under his jacket. Daniel shouted at the man, “Hey there! What are you doing? That's not yours!”
The man saw Daniel and started to run. Daniel looked at his broken bike helplessly and ran fast after the man, shouting, “Stop!Thief!” When the man saw that Daniel was gaining on him, he threw the package at him. Daniel caught it, but he didn't give up the chase. Then the man tripped over a stone and fell on the floor. Daniel came a few seconds later and got him.
The ruckus (喧闹) alarmed all the neighbors. Then the police were called. McReynolds came out from the house, “I couldn't get the door when you rang because I was taking a shower. Thank you for stopping him!” Daniel smiled back at her and was turning around to leave.

Text 10
W:Running a few kilometres each day is good for our health. However, new research says running too much could be bad for us. Running long distances regularly for many years could make our life shorter, not longer. The study is from the Minneapolis Heart Institute. A researcher said too much running could lead to heart disease. He wrote that running too much for many years takes away the good things from exercise. He added that the risk of heart disease could be the same as someone who never exercises. Researchers looked at the health and training of 3,300 runners over the age of 35. Seventy per cent of them ran over 30 kilometres a week. Men who ran marathons for 25 years had 62% more chances of developing heart disease than men who did little or no exercise. Another doctor said he felt cheated. He started running marathons and doing triathlons in 1967. He used to run 60 kilometres every week. He said:“I thought I was out there exhausting myself, building an absolutely indestructible heart.” The doctor advised people to exercise regularly but not to overdo things.

Career Planning
Career planning is an essential exercise for senior students, because career is a crucial part of who we are, thus defining our future life to some extent.
Unfortunately, many students struggle with career planning with just a few ideas bouncing around in their heads, leading to stress or lack of motivation. To overcome these challenges, we students can complete a “career aptitude test” to get some insight on a possible career. If still in a dilemma, we can turn to parents or teachers for advice.
By prioritizing career planning, we are bound to excel in our academic and personal lives.

When Daniel was to pick up his bike, he heard a voice behind him, “Wait!” He turned around and saw McReynolds was running towards him. Daniel was thinking she had already expressed her appreciation to him for what he did. He thought he was doing the right thing. Therefore, he said, “That was no big deal, Miss McReynolds. I have to get my bike repaired now.”McReynolds smiled, “Please wait right here, Daniel. I'll be back in a minute.” Daniel wondered what else she wanted him to do.
Minutes later, McReynolds returned, with a beautiful blue bike. She said to Daniel, “I bought this bike but I have never used it. I have been considering giving it to someone who is in need. Now I want you to have it, please!” Daniel was shocked, in disbelief. Daniel appreciated her generosity and kindness with tears in his eyes. He touched the bike, admiring its beauty, and it was light, too. With the incredible bike, now the boy can deliver his packages more effectively and still have some time left for his studies.
