B I am a Canadian artist living in Victoria. My work focuses on peace. My art helps me find answers, or at least deal with some of the worrying realities of the modern day. My trips into Baghdad standing for peace caused huge stress to my family and me. It took a few years before I was able to come to accept that whole experience and work out how to continue to work as an artist. I put my energy into creating natural art facilities that awoke a sense of peace in myself and others. I set up my first project in a large field, using a simple mother and child design. I later did two similar, small works, one in Scotland and the other in Baghdad. I wanted to create something more permanent(永恒的), however, and so I created the Peace Image in Hudson’s Hope. It can’t be seen very well on the ground these days, because the locals just loved riding over the large piles of dirt. I don’t mind that at all. The Peace Image still turns up well from the air and on Google maps though. For more than 50 years now, I’ve felt pleased to be able to express myself through my art. In the autumn of 2013, I was encouraged to lead the creation of a Peace Garden art project at Woodwynn Farms in Central Saanich. After everything we had been through, it was such a gift to work closely with my wife, Elizabeth Wellburn, a talented artist. It was and still is a labour of love. 4. What made the author suffer from great pressure? A. His lack of enough money. B. Some worrying realities. C. The failure of his first project. D. His strong support of peace. 5. Why did the author create the Peace Image? A. To produce a more lasting thing. B. To raise people’s awareness of peace. C. To make people remember him. D. To satisfy local people’s requirement. 6. How does the author feel about his own artistic works? A. Doubtful. B. Discouraged. C. Satisfied. D. Confident. 7. What is a suitable title for the text? A. An Artist Concentrating on Peace Design B. The Life Story of a Canadian Artist C. Artistic Works Meaning a Labour of Love D. An Unforgettable Experience C “For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first to scale a peak, cross a frontier or document a new species or landscape. Now, in some cases, we’re racing to be the last,” said The New York Times’ Paige McClanahan. In recent years, a growing industry has been spurred on (刺激) by climate change — last-chance tourism. According to Eco Sustainable Solutions, a UK-based organic recycling and waste processing company, last-chance tourism is a kind of tourism geared toward seeing the last of something due to climate change. As temperatures and water levels rise, this could mean seizing the last chance to see the Great Barrier Reef, an Arctic glacier and a remote island that is sinking. As millions of tourists rush to imperiled destinations, some are taking advantage of the increased demand to spread environmental awareness. One tourist spot, Charmonix’s Mer de Glace or “Sea of Ice” in France, opened an exhibit in 2012 to educate visitors on glaciers and climate change. This educational push seems to be having an impact, as a 2020 survey showed that 80 percent of the visitors would “try to learn more about the environment and how to protect it” while 77 percent said they would reduce their water and energy use. However, the last-chance tourism industry may also be harmful. As more and more people flock (蜂拥) into these areas in a panic to see them before they’re gone, they in fact contribute to the increased greenhouse gas emissions and overtourism, leading to their destruction. Many scholars are calling last-chance tourism a paradox (悖论). Although tourists may acknowledge the broader risks and importance of climate change, it’s even more important to connect the responsibility of the individual tourism to climate change. 8. What has contributed to the boom of last-chance tourism, according to the text? A Increased publicity. B. Global warming. C. Environmental awareness. D. Economic development. 9. What does the underlined word “imperiled” in the third paragraph most likely mean? A. Endangered. B. Preserved. C. Popular. D. Remote. 10. Why does the author mention Charmonix’s Mer de Glace? A. To show the positive effect of climate change. B. To demonstrate its success in environmental conservation. C. To discuss a potential benefit of last-chance tourism. D. To highlight the impact of climate education. 11. Which of the following best describes last-chance tourism? A. It is environmentally friendly. B. It helps address climate change. C. It is a double-edged sword. D. It does more harm than good. D A man in a lab coat bends under a dim light with tight eyes looking at a microscope. Time is short, the pays-off are high, and only this scientist can save everyone. That kind of romanticized picture of science was standard for a long time. But it’s far from the truth. Some scientists search for the causes of some observable effects, such as the link between destroyed forests and Earth’s temperature increase. Others may investigate the “what” rather than the “why” of things. For example, ecologists build models to estimate gray wolf abundance in Montana, US. It’s impractical to spot them all and count them. Abundance models are not 100 percent accurate, but they offer estimates that seem good enough to set harvesting quotas (限额) and maintain the ecosystem. Beyond the “what” and the “why”, scientists may focus on the “how”. For instance, the lives of people living with illnesses can be improved by research on how to relieve symptoms, even if the true causes of their disorders are largely unknown to current medicine. People often think “real science” should provide definite, complete and perfect answers to their questions. However, given various limitations and the world’s complexity, keeping multiple perspectives in play is often the best way for scientists to reach their goals and solve the problems at hand. In the world of science, healthy disagreement is a feature, not a bug. Science is a social process in which the community’s scrutiny (监督) ensures we have the best available knowledge. “Best available” does not mean “definitive”, but the best we have until we find out how to improve it. The long history of atomism (原子论) shows how science is a process rather than a fast delivery of results set in stone. As scientist Jean Baptiste Perrin conducted his 1908 experiments that seemingly settled all discussion regarding atoms, questions about the atom’s properties were about to spark decades of controversy with the birth of quantum (量子) physics. Similar discussions continue to the present day. So, real science is a collective, imperfect and may-sided process in which scientists contribute multiple and often partial solutions to complex and diverse problems. 12. How does the author introduce the topic of the article? A. By describing a scientific research process. B. By telling a scientist’s personal experience. C. By giving an example of scientific failure. D. By presenting a common misconception. 13. What do paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about? A. The challenges faced by scientists. B. The history of scientific research. C. The methods scientists use to share results. D. The various focuses of scientists in their research. 14. What is the author’s view on healthy disagreements in science? A. They are essential for scientific progress. B. They create confusion and delay conclusions. C. They indicate problems in scientific methods. D. They often lead to the rejection of old theories. 15. Why does the author mention Jean Baptiste Perrin’s experiments and the subsequent debate ? A. To show science is a collection of facts. B. To prove scientific knowledge is always absolute. C. To illustrate science is a dynamic and evolving process. D. To show scientific conclusion can be reached after discussion. Successful individuals do things just a little differently than the average people. ____16____ Here are four key habits that athletes have to create success. · They get real. But it is still there, like lava bubbling inside a dormant (休眠的) volcano. Occasionally, the lava boils over and I do something I regret. Fortunately, I find my homemade cookies is the best way to repair the damage. The round-shaped little gifts, giving off a pleasant smell, can open the door of a heart that’s hurt. Last week, the cookie again saved me from myself. It all started when I put the cookie dough into the oven, set the timer and waited for them to puff up (膨胀). Then through my kitchen window, I spotted my new neighbor across the street, who placed a Ping-Pong table on his front lawn. He is a college student, wearing a white T-shirt, his dark hair shiny and wild. Sensing my gaze, he nodded and gave me a friendly smile. Yet, for me, it was another story. A Ping-Pong table on a front lawn was not just a Ping-Pong table. It was an annoying game-pong table. Let me explain. Game-pong involves bouncing balls, accompanied by chatting, laughter and loud music. I wouldn’t know about it if I hadn’t spent years living closer to the university, where game-pong tables dotted front yards. At that time, the sounds of game pong extended late into the night and early into the morning. These students embraced game pong as a lifestyle, but for us, it was disaster. The best we could do was move to a quieter part, but at great expense. And now, here was this guy, placing a new game-pong table within full view of my window. The awful memories tripped the anger inside me. So I walked right past that stupid table, pounded on his door and told him that it had to go. I expected him to apologize. Instead, he returned my rage. “Who are you?” he asked. “And what gives you the right to make such a silly demand?” His response made me angrier and I started yelling. Paragraph 1: Suddenly, I heard the timer ringing from my kitchen. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: In no time, the student answered the doorbell. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 广元中学高2023级高二下期第一次阶段性测试 英语试题 (时间:120分钟,满分150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. An Unforgettable Experience 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据文章第二段第1句内容“My trips into Baghdad standing for peace caused huge stress to my family and me.(前往巴格达维护和平之旅给我和我的家人带来了巨大的压力)”可知,说明让作者感到有压力的是他对于和平的向往。 根据文章第三段第1句内容“I wanted to create something more permanent, however, and so I created the Peace Image in Hudson’s Hope.( 然而,我想创造一些更持久的东西,所以我在《哈德逊的希望》中创造了和平的形象)”可知,作者创作Peace Image 的原因是想要创造出一件更持久的东西。故选A项。 The Peace Image still turns up well from the air and on Google maps though.可知,从室外和谷歌地图中都能看到我创作的和平艺术形式,结合第四段第1句内容“For more than 50 years now, I’ve felt pleased to be able to express myself through my art.(50多年来,我一直很高兴能够通过艺术表达自己)”可推断,作者对于自己的作品是满意的。 因此第一段提出了文章的主旨要义“I am a Canadian artist living in Victoria. My work focuses on peace. My art helps me find answers, or at least deal with some of the worrying realities of the modern day.( 我是住在维多利亚的加拿大艺术家。我的工作重点是和平。我的艺术帮助我找到答案,或者至少帮助我解决现代社会的一些令人担忧的现实问题)”可知,本文主要讲述了这位艺术家在维护和平方面的创作和感受。故选A项。 C “For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first to scale a peak, cross a frontier or document a new species or landscape. As millions of tourists rush to imperiled destinations some are taking advantage of the increased demand to spread environmental awareness. A. Increased publicity. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据文章第二段“In recent years, a growing industry has been spurred on (刺激) by climate change — last-chance tourism.(近年来,在气候变化的刺激下,“最后一次旅游”旅游业蓬勃发展)”可知,气候变化影响了“最后一次旅游”旅游业蓬勃发展。 根据文章划线词上一段“According to Eco Sustainable Solutions, a UK-based organic recycling and waste processing company, last-chance tourism is a kind of tourism geared toward seeing the last of something due to climate change. As temperatures and water levels rise, this could mean seizing the last chance to see the Great Barrier Reef, an Arctic glacier and a remote island that is sinking.(根据英国有机回收和废物处理公司Eco Sustainable Solutions的说法,最后的机会旅游是一种为了看到气候变化导致的最后的东西而进行的旅游。随着气温和水位的上升,这可能意味着要抓住看到大堡礁、北极冰川和一个正在下沉的偏远岛屿的最后机会)”可知,这些旅游目的地因为气候影响受到生存威胁,因此,划线词表示“处于危险之中的”,与A选项意思相近。故选A。 根据文章第三段“One tourist spot, Charmonix’s Mer de Glace or “Sea of Ice” in France, opened an exhibit in 2012 to educate visitors on glaciers and climate change. This educational push seems to be having an impact, as a 2020 survey showed that 80 percent of the visitors would “try to learn more about the environment and how to protect it” while 77 percent said they would reduce their water and energy use.(2012年,法国夏蒙尼(Charmonix)的“冰海”(Mer de Glace)举办了一场展览,向游客介绍冰川和气候变化。这一教育推动似乎正在产生影响,2020年的一项调查显示,80%的游客将“尝试了解更多关于环境以及如何保护环境”,而77%的人表示,他们将减少水和能源的使用)”可知,作者提及法国夏蒙尼的“冰海”是为了论述“最后一次旅游”的潜在好处,能帮助人们意识到环境问题并设法保护。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“This educational push seems to be having an impact, as a 2020 survey showed that 80 percent of the visitors would “try to learn more about the environment and how to protect it” while 77 percent said they would reduce their water and energy use.(这一教育推动似乎正在产生影响,2020年的一项调查显示,80%的游客将“尝试了解更多关于环境以及如何保护环境”,而77%的人表示,他们将减少水和能源的使用)”及第四段“ However, the last-chance tourism industry may also be harmful.(然而,“最后一次旅游”可能也是有害的)”结合最后一段“Many scholars are calling last-chance tourism a paradox. Although tourists may acknowledge the broader risks and importance of climate change, it’s even more important to connect the responsibility of the individual tourism to climate change.(许多学者称最后的机会旅游是一个悖论。虽然游客可能承认气候变化的更广泛风险和重要性,但将个人旅游的责任与气候变化联系起来更为重要)”可知,“最后一次旅游”能帮助提升人们的环保意识却也有害处,在旅游中的个人责任也起到很大的重要,因此,它是一把双刃剑。故选C。 D A man in a lab coat bends under a dim light with tight eyes looking at a microscope. D 13. D 14. A 15. 由文章第一段“A man in a lab coat bends under a dim light with tight eyes looking at a microscope. Time is short, the pays-off are high, and only this scientist can save everyone. That kind of romanticized picture of science was standard for a long time. But it’s far from the truth. (一个穿着实验室大褂的男人在昏暗的灯光下弯着腰,紧盯着显微镜。时间很短,回报很高,只有这位科学家能拯救所有人。这种浪漫化的科学图景在很长一段时间内都是标准的。但事实远非如此。)”可知,作者通过呈现一个常见的误解引入这篇文章的主题。故选D。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。由文章第二段中“Some scientists search for the causes of some observable effects, such as the link between destroyed forests and Earth’s temperature increase. Others may investigate the “what” rather than the “why” of things. (除了“是什么”和“为什么”之外,科学家可能会关注“如何”。)”可知,这两段主要讨论了科学家在研究中的不同关注点。故选D。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中“In the world of science, healthy disagreement is a feature, not a bug. Science is a social process in which the community’s scrutiny (监督) ensures we have the best available knowledge. “Best available” does not mean “definitive”, but the best we have until we find out how to improve it. (在科学界,健康的分歧是一种特征,而不是缺陷。科学是一个社会过程,在这个过程中,社会的监督确保我们拥有最好的可用知识。“现有的最佳”并不意味着“确定的”,而是在我们找到改进方法之前我们所拥有的最佳。)”可以推断,作者认为健康的意见分歧对于科学进步是必不可少的。故选A。 根据倒数第二段“The long history of atomism (原子论) shows how science is a process rather than a fast delivery of results set in stone. As scientist Jean Baptiste Perrin conducted his 1908 experiments that seemingly settled all discussion regarding atoms, questions about the atom’s properties were about to spark decades of controversy with the birth of quantum (量子) physics. Similar discussions continue to the present day. Successful individuals do things just a little differently than the average people. ____16____ Here are four key habits that athletes have to create success. · They get real. Basically 40. have developed 41. to rise 42. when 43. quickening 44. shared 45. what 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。 故填on。 故填was elected。 故填have developed。 be expected to do sth. 故填when。 此处是while引导的时间状语从句“while we are quickening the sport’s growth.”,由于从句主语和主句主语一致,谓语中有 be动词相应形式,可同时省略“we are”。 故填what。 Protect the Natural Heritage Ladies and Gentlemen, Today, I stand before you to address a pressing issue: the urgent need to protect our natural heritage. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Protect the Natural Heritage Ladies and Gentlemen, Today, I stand before you to address a pressing issue: the urgent need to protect our natural heritage. Our planet is blessed with a range of stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems and invaluable wildlife. However, our cultural heritage is under attack from neglect, urbanization and climate change, leading to great losses. The significance of protecting our natural relics cannot be overstated. They are not just stones and relics but also a reflection of our ancestors’ wisdom. Firstly, promote sustainable tourism that prioritizes the preservation of sites over commercial gains. Secondly, raise public awareness to educate communities about the value of the heritage. Let us act now to ensure that these priceless pieces of our history are not lost to time. 词汇积累 极好的:stunning→ unexceptionable 然而:however→ nevertheless 夸大:overstate→ exaggerate 确保:ensure→ make sure 2. They are not just stones and relics but also a reflection of our ancestors’ wisdom. Not only are they stones and relics but also they serve as a reflection of our ancestors’ wisdom. 1】However, our cultural heritage is under attack from neglect, urbanization and climate change, leading to great losses.(运用了现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】Firstly, promote sustainable tourism that prioritizes the preservation of sites over commercial gains.(运用了that引导的限制性定语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. Coming from a long line of angry folks, I have always tried to soften my anger. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Suddenly, I heard the timer ringing from my kitchen. It was obvious that my cookies were ready. I ran back as quickly as possible. The moment I opened the oven, the familiar smell brought all senses back to me. How could I blame someone who did nothing wrong in the first place? I was ashamed and I decided to make up for the hurt I had done to the boy. So, I put the cookies on the plate and walked across the street to the kid’s doorstep. This time, instead of pounding on his door, I chose to ring the doorbell. In no time, the student answered the doorbell. Gathering up all my courage, I offered the plate of cookies and said sorry. Then came the long silence. For one horrible moment, I even pictured him knocking over the plate, sending cookies across the yard. What happened next made me surprised. His face softened and he reached out to accept the lovely cookies. He said sorry and hoped we could start all over again. “Of course,” I agreed. Walking back, I felt like I’d witnessed a miracle. 词汇激活 行为类 ①跑回:run back/dash back ②弥补:make up for/compensate for ③说:say/express ④决定做某事:decide to do/determine to do 情绪类 ①羞愧的:ashamed/embarrassed ②惊讶的:surprised/astonished 【点睛】[高分句型 1].
