People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.
11. Which of the following can be put in “________” in Paragraph 1?
A. Humans may not like animals. B. Scientists know nothing about it.

A. B. C. D.
13. How did the volunteers help with the research?
A. By listening to the chicken calls. B. By taking care of the chickens.

14. What does the underlined word “identify” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Control. B. Hide. C. Recognize. D. Hurt.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Chickens’ Food Calls B. Happy Chickens, Sad Chickens
C. Farmers’ Best Choice D. Smart Farmers, Healthy Farmers

Last week, I went to a restaurant for dinner. I recognized the face of the boy sitting at the table next to me. I was sure I had seen him before, but couldn’t remember his name. Have you ever had an experience like that?
Humans have a great ability to recognize faces. From movie stars to our relatives, friends and classmates, we can actually remember the faces of a large number of people. The question is: How many faces a person can remember at most?
Humans are much better at recognizing faces than at remembering names: Early humans didn’t have spoken language. They largely depended on their visual (视觉的) abilities to tell their family members from strangers. As a result, our vision has developed to be one of our strongest senses. When we talk to others, we often keep eye contact with them and look at their faces from time to time. Our brain takes in and stores their looks, such as the color of their eyes and the shape of their mouth.
In a study, a group of people were tested on their facial. memory abilities. They were asked to. recall (回想) the faces of all the people they knew about. Then, they were asked to identify their pictures. It turned out that normal people were able to remember between1,000 and 10,000 faces. The average was about 5,000.
Meanwhile, some people have much stronger facial memories than others. They are called super recognizers remembering about 10,000 faces is the upper limit. for a normal person; but these people may be able to recall many thousands more different-faces. Most people can, only recognize about twenty percent of the faces they have seen. Super recognizers, however, can remember up to 80 percent of them!

C. didn’t know how to speak D. were very clever
23. According to the study mentioned; how many faces can a normal person remember at most?

24. How are super: recognizers different from normal people?
A. They have excellent eyesight.
B. They pay very close attention to people’s looks.

The Maori arrived in New Zealand from Polynesian (波利尼西亚) islands about a thousand years ago. They were the first people to live in New Zealand.
In the late 18th century, Europeans came to live in New Zealand. At that time, the population of the Maori was maybe 250,000 in New Zealand. Over the next one hundred years, wars and disease killed many Maori people. By the end of the 19th century, there were only about 40,000 Maori people left. Many of the new marae are in the cities. Now people in the cities can meet and learn about their Maori traditions.
Today most New Zealand cities have Maori festivals each year. Among festival activities are competitions in speaking, dancing and singing. Children practice for months. Then all the Maori in the area arrive to watch the competitions and see who wins.

七、阅读表达 (共5小题,计10分)

How important is music? When they are asked this question, some students and parents usually answer that music is nice, but not very important. It is often considered only as entertainment, but not the first choice for education. This opinion is shortsighted. In fact, music education is necessary and important for all students.
Music influences us greatly. 3.Music shows the creators’ thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. For example, just as Mozart music represents a lifestyle, rock music represents a lifestyle too. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions.
4. Music gives a kind of ability to know the world in a different way. Science explains how the sun rises and sets. Music tells the emotive (情感的) meanings. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world because no one way can get it all.
Music is a form of thought, as powerful as science. It is a way we human beings “talk” to each other. Through the language we express our feelings, our discoveries, our ideas, our imagination and our hopes so that they can be shared with others. When we do not let our children receive good music education, we keep them away from the meanings that music expresses. Science does not tell us what it means to be human. Music does.

Music does.
