B
Going into my Ph.D. program, I knew I loved to communicate science to the public as much as I liked doing science. But the few times I presented to broader audiences, I struggled to explain how my research might apply in the real world and why it matters.
The problem came to a head 5 years into my Ph.D. when I took a trip to Maine. Many fellow travelers excitedly shared stories about the latest books they’d consumed. I could vividly recall every detail of the papers piling up back in the lab, yet I couldn’t remember the last book I had read for fun. And so I found myself mostly talking about my research. As I struggled to convey its broader relevance, I noticed that the enthusiasm in my voice faded away with each new conversation. “Is my Ph.D. killing my love of science?” I thought.
When I returned home, I resolved to dedicate more time to reading for pleasure, and my brother had recommended a science fiction book, which blew me away by the scientific technologies and plots crafted within a wildly imaginative storyline. It was like nothing I had ever read before.
I kept reading science fiction after I finished my Ph.D. But I still hadn’t gotten back to communicating science to the public until a colleague invited me to speak at a pop culture convention(大会), where I gave a talk about the science behind the classic Dune books by Frank Herbert.
When the day came to present, I felt anxious until I was behind the podium and saw the bright-eyed, eager attendees. After I finished, I was overwhelmed with questions and comments that spilled over beyond the given time. It suddenly occurred to me that this was my path back to science communication. I’m glad science fiction helped me professionally, fueling my ability to communicate the wonders of science to broader audience.
4. What was the author’s initial problem?
A. How to sustain interest in science consistently. B. How to spread science to the public effectively.
C. How to apply science to the real world practically. D. How to recall something about the research vividly.
5. Which word can best describe the recommended book by the author’s brother?
A. Plain. B. Professional. C. Complex. D. Novel.
6. What is the turning point on the author’s path back to science communication?
A. Preference for reading science fiction. B. Attendees’ unsatisfaction and doubts.
C. A classic book written by Frank Herbert. D. A speech on the science behind a book.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The dilemma of most ph.D students. B. The impact of pop culture convention.
C. The joy of rediscovering science communication. D. The significance of public engagement in science.
B 5. D 6. D 7. C
根据文中第一段“Going into my Ph.D. program, I knew I loved to communicate science to the public as much as I liked doing science. But the few times I presented to broader audiences, I struggled to explain how my research might apply in the real world and why it matters.(在攻读博士学位时,我知道我喜欢向公众传播科学,就像我喜欢做科学一样。但在为数不多的几次面向更广泛的听众的演讲中,我努力解释我的研究如何应用于现实世界,以及为什么它很重要。)”以及文中第二段第一句“The problem came to a head 5 years into my Ph.D. when I took a trip to Maine.(读博5年后,当我去缅因州旅行时,这个问题达到了顶峰。)”
根据文中第三段“When I returned home, I resolved to dedicate more time to reading for pleasure, and my brother had recommended a science fiction book, which blew me away by the scientific technologies and plots crafted within a wildly imaginative storyline. It was like nothing I had ever read before. (回到家后,我决定花更多的时间来阅读消遣,我哥哥给我推荐了一本科幻小说,书中的科学技术和充满想象力的故事情节让我深深着迷。这是我以前从未读过的。)”可知作者哥哥推荐的书非常新颖,故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文中倒数第二段“But I still hadn’t gotten back to communicating science to the public until a colleague invited me to speak at a pop culture convention(大会), where I gave a talk about the science behind the classic Dune books by Frank Herbert.(但是,直到一位同事邀请我在一个流行文化大会上发言,我才重新开始向公众传播科学,在那里我做了一个关于弗兰克·赫伯特经典小说《沙丘》背后的科学的演讲。)”
根据文章第一段“Going into my Ph.D. program, I knew I loved to communicate science to the public as much as I liked doing science. But the few times I presented to broader audiences, I struggled to explain how my research might apply in the real world and why it matters.(在攻读博士学位时,我知道我喜欢向公众传播科学,就像我喜欢做科学一样。但在为数不多的几次面向更广泛的听众的演讲中,我努力解释我的研究如何应用于现实世界,以及为什么它很重要。)”可知作者自从读博士时就喜欢向公众传播科学,根据文章第二段“And so I found myself mostly talking about my research. As I struggled to convey its broader relevance, I noticed that the enthusiasm in my voice faded away with each new conversation.(所以我发现自己大部分时间都在谈论我的研究。当我努力表达它更广泛的意义时,我注意到我声音中的热情随着每一次新的谈话而消失。)”可知作者发现自己很难有效地向公众传播科学,文章第三、四、五段集中讲述作者通过阅读哥哥推荐的科幻小说以及一次流行文化大会上所做的关于经典小说《沙丘》背后的科学演讲终于让作者找到了向大众传播科学的有效途径。纵观全文,文章主要围绕着作者是如何重新找到传播科学之路这个话题展开的,所以C项The joy of rediscovering science communication.(重新发现科学传播的乐趣。)

Administrators of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu province, are striving to harmonize tourists’ exploration of the site with the need to safeguard murals and artifacts, through innovative measures such as digital presentations.
Sandstorms, rainfall and tourist visits constitute the most severe threats to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, said Wang Xiaowei, director of the Dunhuang Grottoes Monitoring Center at the Dunhuang Academy.
Since the Mogao Caves opened to the public in 1979, the number of visitors has been growing at an average annual rate of around 20 percent, reaching 2.15 million in 2019 before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the site is expected to receive a record 3 million visitors.
“If you enter the caves during the peak tourism months of July, August and September, you’ll find it hard to breathe,” Wang said. The carbon dioxide and moisture exhaled by visitors accumulate inside the caves and cause damage to the murals, Wang said.
To preserve the caves, the duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms. To try and ensure visitors aren’t disappointed when restrictions are in place, the center provides a digital exhibition, he said.
Currently, the center is being expanded to cater for an additional 3,000 visitors on top of the existing capacity of 6,000.
The Dunhuang Academy began digitally recording and storing images of murals and painted sculptures over 30 years ago. The digitization project has successfully covered over 200 caves, with a dedicated team of 110 experts currently undertaking the work.
The Mogao Caves are immovable, and transporting them is impossible, according to Su Bomin, head of the Dunhuang Academy. And he added, “However, with digitization, we can perfectly replicate Dunhuang art and showcase it worldwide, introducing Eastern culture to the world.”
In 2016, the Digital Dunhuang repository went live, sharing high-definition images and panoramic tours of the most exquisite 30 caves globally. Currently, visitors from 78 countries have accessed the repository, totaling over 16.8 million visits.
Su said Dunhuang can provide diverse cultural exchanges through its cultural relics. “By digitizing these relics, we enable people worldwide to understand Dunhuang’s culture, thereby gaining a deeper appreciation for China’s historical commitment to diverse cultural exchanges — that is, an ethos of inclusivity, mutual learning and a shared future,” he said.
8. Which of the following is NOT the reason for providing a digital exhibition?
A. The factors related to COVID-19 put the caves in grave danger.
B. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves.
C The authority is aimed at balancing tourism and relics conservation.
D. The duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms.
9. What does the underlined word “replicate” probably mean?
A. Copy. B. Safeguard. C. Access. D. Transport.
10. What does Su Bomin think of digitization?
A. It records and stores images of murals and painted sculptures.
B. It shares high definition and panoramic tours of the most exquisite caves.
C. It allows for an international exchange of cultures through the relics.
D. It enables people to appreciate the lasting beauty of the murals.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Significance of the Mural Paintings
B. The Restoration in Mogao Caves
C. The Innovation on Mogao Caves’ Preservation
D. The Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese Culture
A 9. A 10. C 11. C

根据第二段“Sandstorms, rainfall and tourist visits constitute the most severe threats to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, said Wang Xiaowei, director of the Dunhuang Grottoes Monitoring Center at the Dunhuang Academy.(敦煌研究院敦煌石窟监测中心主任Wang Xiaowei表示,沙尘暴、降雨和游客来访是对联合国教科文组织世界遗产最严重的威胁。)”,第四段“The carbon dioxide and moisture exhaled by visitors accumulate inside the caves and cause damage to the murals(游客呼出的二氧化碳和湿气会在洞穴内积聚,对壁画造成损害)”和第五段“To preserve the caves, the duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms. To try and ensure visitors aren’t disappointed when restrictions are in place, the center provides a digital exhibition, he said.(为了保护洞穴,参观的时间是有限的,有时在下雨或沙尘暴期间停止。他说,为了确保游客在实施限制措施时不会感到失望,该中心提供了一个数字展览。)”可知,提供数码展览的原因包括B,C,D三项,不包括A项,故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第三段“The Mogao Caves are immovable, and transporting them is impossible(莫高窟是不可移动的,运输它们是不可能的)”,“with digitization(通过数字化)”和“showcase it worldwide, introducing Eastern culture to the world(向世界展示,向世界介绍东方文化)”可知,莫高窟是不可移动的,通过数字化,我们可以完美地复制敦煌艺术,并向全世界展示,划线词replicate的意思是“复制”,和copy意思相近,故选A。
根据最后一段“Su said Dunhuang can provide diverse cultural exchanges through its cultural relics.(Su说,敦煌可以通过其文物提供多种文化交流。)”和“By digitizing these relics, we enable people worldwide to understand Dunhuang’s culture, thereby gaining a deeper appreciation for China’s historical commitment to diverse cultural exchanges — that is, an ethos of inclusivity, mutual learning and a shared future(通过将这些文物数字化,我们让全世界的人了解敦煌文化,从而更深刻地认识到中国对多元文化交流的历史承诺——即包容、互学、共享未来的精神)”可知,Su Bomin认为数字化使得可以通过文物进行国际文化交流。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Administrators of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu province, are striving to harmonize tourists’ exploration of the site with the need to safeguard murals and artifacts, through innovative measures such as digital presentations.(甘肃省敦煌莫高窟的管理人员正在努力通过数字展示等创新措施,使游客对该遗址的探索与保护壁画和文物的需要相协调。)”
D
“The climate time bomb is ticking,” said UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres at a recent meeting. Preventing global warming from reaching the 1. 5 °C limit is “achievable” but it will take a giant leap in climate action, Guterres added.
As cities develop, some sources of carbon emissions (排放) may be hard to notice for most people, for example, the bricks used in buildings. US company Biomason has produced bio-based cement (水泥), which can sharply cut emissions during traditional cement production.
“We grow cement the same way nature does,” wrote the company’s website. How the cement is “grown” is based on biomineralization, the process by which living organisms produce minerals. One example of biomineralization is coral reefs. Massive reef structures are formed when each individual stony coral produces calcium carbonate, a kind of mineral. Although the stony corals are tiny, one reef structure, built by millions of stony corals, can grow to weigh several tons.
This biobased cement alternative is called Biolith. During the production of each Biolith tile, bacteria and nutrients are mixed with sand. Organisms then produce calcium carbonate by absorbing a liquid made of calcium and nitrogen (氮). However, the process doesn’t change the size of the Biolith tile instead, it increases the density. The produced calcium carbonate forms bridges between the grains, strengthening the unit from within. It takes less than 72 hours to let a Biolith tile “grow” fully, while traditional concrete requires about 28 days to make a brick.
The company aims to “remove 25 percent of carbon emissions from the concrete industry by 2030,” according to its website. Traditional concrete is made of crushed stones. The process involves heating the stone to temperatures greater than 1,300 °C, during which carbon dioxide is emitted. The manufacture of Biolith, however, doesn’t involve heating, which greatly reduces carbon emissions. The company plans on increasing the use of bio-based bricks, covering 35,000 square meters in Europe by the end of this year.
12. What is biomineralization?
A. The process of producing bio-based cement.
B. The process of controlling calcium carbonate.
C. The process of producing minerals by living organisms.
D. The process of absorbing a liquid made of calcium and nitrogen.
13. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about the production of Biolith?
A. It requires temperatures greater than 1,300° C.
B. It takes as long as traditional concrete to fully harden.
C. It involves the use of living organisms to create calcium carbonate.
D. It releases more carbon dioxide than traditional concrete production.
14. What is the main advantage of Biolith over traditional concrete?
A. It makes bricks larger and more durable.
B. It requires no heating, cutting carbon emissions.
C. It reduces the amount of sand used in construction.
D. It reduces the time needed for concrete to set by half.
15. Which of the following best summarizes the purpose of the article?
A. To explain how climate change affects coral reefs.
B. To highlight the difficulties in creating eco-friendly cement.
C. To discuss global climate goals and their impact on construction.
D. To describe a company’s efforts to reduce emissions in the concrete industry.
C 13. C 14. B 15. D

Fear is one of our strongest emotions. However, people with phobias(恐惧)have an extreme fear response that causes both physical and psychological pain. In everyday life, some phobia triggers(诱因)are much easier to avoid than others. For instance, people who suffer from a fear of bats are highly unlikely to be troubled by these creatures every day. ____16____
The good news is that there are a variety of different methods used to treat phobias. Among the most popular are cognitive behavioral therapy(疗法), exposure therapy, and virtual reality therapy.
*Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT)
____17____ It is thought that unreasonable anxiety is caused by a patient’s negative interpretation of events, rather than the events themselves. CBT is a talking therapy that helps patients assess their reactions to situations, replacing the worry cycle with more useful or realistic thoughts.
*Exposure therapy
The aim of exposure therapy is to gradually desensitize(使脱敏)the patients to the source of their phobia. ____18____ A person who fears spiders might place thinking about a spider at the bottom of the list, and having a spider move along his arm at the top. With the help of a psychologist, the patient systematically works their way through the list, using relaxation techniques until they are comfortable with each stage.
*Virtual Reality therapy
Exposure therapy isn’t a usable option for all phobias. ____19____ Advancements in virtual reality systems mean that patients can now face their fears through a headset rather than in the real world. ____20____ In the case of people with a phobia of flying, they can take a course of sessions in which they board a virtual plane and experience announcements, take-off and landing without having to buy a plane ticket each week.
A. Luckily, modern technology offers an alternative.
B. The patient ranks situations from least to most terrifying.
C. Instead, our brains can be retrained to overcome a phobia.
D. The aim of CBT is to change how we think about certain situations.
E. Someone suffering from a social phobia, however, will struggle to lead a normal life.
F. This enables patients to face their phobias, while knowing they are in no physical danger.
G. CBT is as effective as medication in treating many anxiety disorders.
E 17. D 18. B 19. A 20. F

根据前文“In everyday life, some phobia triggers(诱因)are much easier to avoid than others. For instance, people who suffer from a fear of bats are highly unlikely to be troubled by these creatures every day. ”(在日常生活中,有些恐惧症的诱因比其他的更容易避免。例如,那些害怕蝙蝠的人不太可能每天都受到这些生物的困扰。)可知,有些恐惧症的引发的因素是不常见,可以避免的,不会影响正常的生活。下文“The good news is that there are a variety of different methods used to treat phobias. ”(好消息是治疗恐惧症的方法有很多种。)可知,有很多治疗恐惧症的方法,既然是“好消息”,说明有很多人的日常生活是受到恐惧症的影响的。选项E.“然而,患有社交恐惧症的人将很难过上正常的生活。”,引出下文对各种疗法的描述,符合题意,故选E。
【17题详解】
根据下文“It is thought that unreasonable anxiety is caused by a patient’s negative interpretation of events, rather than the events themselves. CBT is a talking therapy that helps patients assess their reactions to situations, replacing the worry cycle with more useful or realistic thoughts.”(人们认为,不合理的焦虑是由病人对事件的负面解释引起的,而不是事件本身引起的。
根据下文“A person who fears spiders might place thinking about a spider at the bottom of the list, and having a spider move along his arm at the top. With the help of a psychologist, the patient systematically works their way through the list, using relaxation techniques until they are comfortable with each stage.”(一个害怕蜘蛛的人可能会把思考蜘蛛放在列表的底部,让蜘蛛沿着他的手臂移动放在列表的顶部。

故填was drawn。

The sun was setting over Springdale, casting shadows across the busy community center. A group of teenagers, the members of the Springdale Youth Committee, gathered at a table. They looked determined and worried. Among them was Emily, a smart but often unnoticed girl who loves helping others.
For weeks, they had been organizing a fundraising event for the local homeless shelter, as the shelter struggled to assist the increasing number of individuals seeking help. The big day was one week away, and everything was set — until they discovered another group had a similar charity event on the same day. This could divide the people who might come and the donations they hoped to get.
“We can’t change the date now,” said Tom, a senior member, his voice filled with frustration. “We’ve already sent out invitations, and the place is booked.” Emily listened quietly to the discussion. She knew changing the date wasn’t possible, but she also realized competing with another worthy cause could hurt both sides.
After the meeting ended without a solution Emily decided to take action. She spent the next day looking into ways to work with the other group, hoping to find a way that would help both the homeless shelter and the other cause.
The next day, she came to the committee with a suggestion. “What if we join our events?” she asked. “We could share resources, work together on promoting, and most importantly, make sure both causes are supported by the community.”
The members looked at each other, some doubtful, others interested. “That’s a great idea, Emily, but how will we get them to agree?” Laura, another member, asked. Emily had already thought this through. “I’ll talk to their organizer and show them the benefits of a joint event.” She knew the path ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to make it happen for Springdale and its people.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The committee agreed to let Emily lead this effort. As expected, the idea of partnering with the rival organization met with opposition. The other group, protective of their previous hard work, was initially reluctant to accept Emily’s proposal. They worried that their unique voice would be lost in the mix, insisting that their event should stand alone. Emily, unshaken, continued to highlight the benefits of partnership, emphasizing the potential for more donations and increased community involvement. It was a tough sell, but Emily’s determination and the sound reasoning of her plan gradually broke through their initial reluctance.
After days of negotiation, Emily finally got a positive reply. They had come to realize the value in Emily’s proposal and agreed to collaborate. The two teams began working together, pooling their resources and expertise to create a single, unified event. The result was an overwhelming success, attracting a larger crowd and fostering a sense of unity among the participants. The substantial funds collected profoundly benefited both the homeless shelter and the other cause, showing that when organizations put aside their differences and worked together towards a common goal, the power of collaboration could make a real difference.

A. Plain.

C. The authority is aimed at balancing tourism and relics conservation.
D. The duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms.
9. What does the underlined word “replicate” probably mean?
A. Copy. B. Safeguard. C. Access. D. Transport.
10. What does Su Bomin think of digitization?
A. It records and stores images of murals and painted sculptures.
B. It shares high definition and panoramic tours of the most exquisite caves.
C. It allows for an international exchange of cultures through the relics.
D. It enables people to appreciate the lasting beauty of the murals.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Significance of the Mural Paintings
B. The Restoration in Mogao Caves
C. The Innovation on Mogao Caves’ Preservation
D. The Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese Culture

After the meeting ended without a solution, Emily decided to take action.
