It looks as if it could flap its colorful wings and fly free from its white cloth background. This 55-year-old embroiderer from Guizhou Province was born in a closed and underdeveloped village deep in the mountains, where most residents live by farming or as migrant workers. Losing her left arm at a very young age meant she could not feed herself, but she refused to become downhearted, and learned embroidery from her mother diligently and determinedly. After producing several works featuring butterflies and goldfish, she won many national professional skills awards in 2011 among people with disabilities. In 2012, she opened her workshop, with embroiderers putting their designs on the shelves to sell to locals, but business was poor. However, Liang’s career prospered after an online commercial order. Now, clothes, ties, paintings and handicrafts produced by the workshop are sold to consumers worldwide via e-commerce platforms, with profit reaching from 300,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan annually. As the number of orders rose, Liang employed more workers, offering jobs to more than 100 female embroiderers in the neighborhood. She has also organized training courses for jobless women. “Thanks to the online buyers, our products sell well, which has changed our lives and brought us income and dignity,” Liang said. Wang Danqing, an online seller, has worked with Liang’s team since 2015. She said, “Many young consumers prefer products with cultural elements and personal appeal. Only by combining embroidered designs with modern life can cultural heritage be seen, loved, protected and passed down.” 4. What do we know about Liang Zhongmei? A. Products with personal elements are favored by the youth. 7. What is the main idea of the text? A. Online shopping gains popularity in China. B. Young people take a great interest in embroidery. C. Liang became an expert in embroidery despite her disability. D. Disabled Liang achieved success by trading embroidery online. C Tourists visiting La Gomera and EI Hierro in the Canary-Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling-not a tune but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a whistled Spanish language. Whistled languages are almost developed in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. That’s because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout. On La Gomera, for example, a few traditional shepherds (牧羊人) still whistle to one another across mountain valleys that could take hours to cross. Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be produced in a whistle, says Meyer. We distinguish(区分) one speech sound from another by small differences in their sound frequency patterns. A long e, for example, is formed higher in the mouth than along o, giving it a higher sound. To language scientists, such languages are more than just a curiosity. By studying whistled languages, they hope to learn more about how our brains get meaning from the complex sound patterns of speech. Whistling may even provide a chance to know one of the most dramatic jump forward in human evolution(进化): the origin of language itself. Despite their interest to both language experts and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some, such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico, have already disappeared. “...now you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity and less access to roads,” Meyer says. Fortunately, there is still hope. UNESCO, the UN cultural organization, has listed two whistled languages, Silbo, and a whistled Turkish, as the world’s cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts. 8. What led to the development of whistled languages? A. Geographic inaccessibility. B. Rapid increase in tourism. C. Greater information capacity. D. Interest of language experts. 9. Why are a long “e” and a long “o” mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To show what key elements speech has. B. To explain the differences between speech sound frequency patterns. C. To prove the popularity of whistled language in the world. D. To compare whistled languages and ordinary languages. 10. What might be a reason for the disappearance of whistled languages according to Meyer? A. Construction of cities. B. Lack of attention. C. Expansion of other cultures. D. Modernization. 11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. Why People Used Whistled Languages B. When Whistles Languages Disappeared C. How Whistled Languages Developed D. Why Whistled Languages Matter D One thing that many Americans can agree on, even in an era of deep political polarization (两极分化), is that our country is in a moral free fall. In survey after survey, US adults of all ages, education levels, political or religious backgrounds say that people are less kind, honest, generous, and respectful than they used to be. So is our nation’s moral foundation falling apart? Not necessarily. In fact, two psychologists, Columbia’s Adam Mastroianni and Harvard’s Daniel Gilbert, say that the widespread belief in moral decline (下降) is a misconception. They recently conducted a meta-analysis of all the major surveys that asked Americans about the state of moral values in this country and they found that US residents have been complaining about one another’s declining morality for as long as researchers have been seeking their opinions on the matter. And yet when individual respondents are asked multiple times, over the span of a decade or more, to describe the level of politeness and kindness they observe in their fellow citizens, their descriptions of other people’s attitudes and behaviors do not actually worsen at all. Mastroianni and Gilbert whose paper appears in the journal Nature, say the results of similar surveys conducted in dozens of other countries over the decades suggest that people all over the world are easy to be influenced by the misconception that their peers are less moral than they once were. They say that this misconception is likely explained by two well-established psychological phenomena acting together: that we tend to pay closer attention to negative rather than positive information about people’s actions in the present day; and that we tend to selectively forget such negative impressions as the years roll on, leaving us with good memories for the past. Mastroianni and Gilbert also say that their discovery has important social and political implications, especially given that, as one 2015 survey found, three-quarters of all Americans believe that addressing the moral breakdown of the country should be a high priority (优先项) for the government. “The United States faces many well-documented problems, from climate change and terrorism to racial injustice and economic inequality — and yet, nowadays it is believed that the government should devote fewer resources to reversing an imaginary trend.” 12. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To provide a historical review of American society. B. To present contrasting viewpoints on moral decline. C. To introduce the topic of moral decline in American society. D. To discuss the method of psychological research on moral decline. 13. What is the main argument presented by Mastroianni and Gilbert in their research? A. The morality of American society seems to be on a rapid rise. B. American citizens’ belief in declining morality is a false idea. C. The moral breakdown has already been a long-term issue in America. D. American society has realized its own misconception of moral decline. 14. According to the passage, what is the reason for the widespread belief in moral decline? A. Selective memory about previous impressions. B. The mixed influence of psychological phenomena. C. Negative descriptions of morality from peers. D. Lack of government involvement in moral issues. 15. What does Mastroianni and Gilbert’s research imply on social and political views? A. Americans should attach more importance to global issues. B. Americans should help the government reverse the moral decline. C. Government resources should be focused on addressing the moral decline. D. Addressing the imaginary moral breakdown should not be a top choice. Does your teenager seem addicted to the Internet? Fortunately there is still hope. C Greater information capacity. Why Whistled Languages Matter 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. Mastroianni and Gilbert, whose paper appears in the journal Nature, say the results of similar surveys conducted in dozens of other countries over the decades suggest that people all over the world are easy to be influenced by the misconception that their peers are less moral than they once were. 12. C 13. B 14. B 15. Thus##Therefore 42. A 43. those 44. surrounded 45. which 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 故填are prized。 故填Thus/Therefore。 故填A。 故填those。 故填which。 Dear Adam, _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Adam, Knowing that you intend to pay a visit to China next month, I’m more than delighted to recommend you a fascinating city — Xi’an. Xi’an, located in Shaanxi Province, is famous for its rich history dating back thousands of years. One of its most iconic attractions is the Terracotta Army, a vast collection of terracotta sculptures describing the army of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Additionally, you can explore the ancient city walls, which are among the best-preserved in China, and visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a symbol of Xi’an’s Buddhist heritage. I sincerely hope that you can enjoy yourself. If you have any problem, please feel free to contact me. 词汇积累 打算:intend→plan 迷人的:fascinating→appealing 坐落于: located in→ situated in 保存最完好的:best-preserved→most well-preserved 2. Xi’an, located in Shaanxi Province, is famous for its rich history dating back thousands of years. Xi’an, which is located in Shaanxi Province, is famous for its rich history that dates back thousands of years. 1】Knowing that you intend to pay a visit to China next month, I’m more than delighted to recommend you a fascinating city — Xi’an. 2】One of its most iconic attractions is the Terracotta Army, a vast collection of terracotta sculptures describing the army of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China.(运用了同位语a vast collection of terracotta sculptures对the Terracotta Army 进行解释说明;运用了同位语the first Emperor of China对Qin Shi Huang进行解释说明,以及现在分词作定语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
