It was a nervous time. World War II had started, and British ships were always watching for German submarines called U-boats. The ship Ben Lomond had left Cape Town, South Africa, with a crew of 55, including a young officer named Poon Lim.
On November 23, 1942, the worst fear came true. The Ben Lomond was attacked by a U-boat. Within minutes the boat was sinking. Poon Lim grabbed a life jacket and leaped over the side. He swam rapidly away from the ship in case it exploded. Sure enough, it let out a large boom and sank beneath the waves. For two hours Poon Lim struggled in the water. Once he almost got onto a life raft with five other sailors, but it got away from his grasp. Then he saw another life raft that was empty, swam to it, and climbed aboard. He found a few cans of biscuits, a water jug, some flares, and a flashlight, which could be enough supplies for about a month.
Day after day Poon Lim had his few biscuits and a couple of sips of water. He searched the horizon for ships. Twice he leaped up to shout and wave when he saw help coming. Once he saw a freight ship. It passed him. At a later time, he saw a United States Navy plane. It flew low over the raft but then disappeared. Still later a U-boat spotted him but for some reason left him alone.
Poon Lim knew he needed to stay strong. He couldn’t get much exercise on an eight-foot-square raft, but he could swim. A couple of times a day, he circled the raft, always watching for sharks. Soon his food and water ran low. He knew that drinking seawater would make him sick, so he tore off the canvas cover on his life jacket and set it out to catch rainwater. Then he took apart the flashlight and used a wire inside to make a fishhook. For months Poon Lim drifted, catching fish and sometimes birds. One time he even caught a shark. Finally, after 130 days, he noticed that the color of the water was changing. Two days later, on his 133rd day, he saw a boat. Three sailors in a small sailboat picked him up and took him to Belem, a city on the coast of Brazil. Poon Lim had crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
No one ever had survived longer on a raft at sea. Poon Lim received many honors, including Britain’s highest award. A booklet of his survival methods was put into every British life raft.
41. What happened just after Poon Lim’s ship was hit?
A. It immediately exploded. B. Poon Lim jumped over the side.
C. Poon Lim found a life raft. D. The U-boat picked up survivors.
42. How many chances of rescue did Poon Lim miss?
A. Four. B. Five.
C. Three. D. Two.
43. What did Poon Lim do just after his food and water ran low?
A. He jumped up and down and waved, hoping to attract help.
B. He went swimming, hoping to find some fish.
C. He made a rain catcher and some fishing equipment.
D. He spotted a United States Navy plane.
44. Which of these things happened last?
A. Poon Lim noticed that the water had changed color.
B. Poon Lim landed in a Brazilian city.
C. Some sailors picked up Poon Lim.
D. Poon Lim caught a shark with his fishhook.
45. Why was Poon Lim presented with many honors?
A. He had voyaged the longest time on the Atlantic Ocean.
B. He managed to spend 133 days on a life raft with determination.
C. He had a knowledge of survival methods on the sea.
D. He didn’t surrender himself to German U-boats.

TikTok is setting a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.
Hitting the limit, users affected will receive a new passcode on the screen in their app to unlock extra time. Anyone who rejects the new 60-minute restriction and goes on to use the app for 100 minutes a day will receive a warning from TikTok to set their own screen time controls. Parents of children using the Family Pairing option on the app will also be able to set screen time limits, as well as access a dashboard (控制面板) which would give a breakdown of app usage.
Cormac Keenan, head of trust and safety at TikTok, said the company had worked with researchers in developing the new limits. “Since there’s no agreement on the ‘right’ amount of screen time, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” he said.
Critics of the video app welcomed the screen time limit, but described it as the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to TikTok’s response to young users’ exposure to the platform. “TikTok has won the race for the hearts and minds of 14 to 24-year-olds in the United States and the United Kingdom,” said Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. “It is the one that needs to be dealt with most urgently.” Mr Ahmed said his centre’s research at the end of last year found that within minutes of opening a TikTok account, a 13-year-old girl user was receiving eating disorder and self-harm content in her feed. He called on the platform to focus its efforts not just on limiting screen time, but also to “clean up” feeds of harmful content to make it a “safe environment for children”.
46. In the first paragraph, TikTok is introducing the new screen time limit to________.
A. encourage in-person interactions B. increase the use of the platform
C. help teens stay in control of their use D. avoid criticism from concerned parents
47. What will happen when users under 18 reach their screen time limit?
A. Their parents will send them a warning message.
B. They will be locked out of their account for the day.
C. They must enter a passcode to continue using the app.
D. Their parents must access a dashboard to activate the app.
48. How did TikTok develop the new limits?
A. By seeking expert advice. B. By consulting the government.
C. By launching a survey among its users. D. By copying other social media platforms.
49. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. An insufficient action to keep teens safe on TikTok.
B. An noticeable part of network security problems.
C. An urgent issue waiting for TikTok to deal with.
D. An over reliance on TikTok among teens.
50. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.
A. TikTok exposes young users to mental disorder B. TikTok is dangerously addictive to teens
C. TikTok appeals to young users worldwide D. TikTok is popular but not safe enough for teens
D
Many years ago, I bumped into an old friend of mine. He had devoted his life to acting but had never been quite successful. In his middle age, he seemed defeated and sad.
I thought of his dogged perseverance. Was it smart or foolish? What could he have achieved? Had he quit his dream of acting and moved on? Our culture does not look kindly upon quitting. Failure is perfectly acceptable as long as it eventually results in success.
We chant “Winners never quit” and “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.” We lap up stories of persistence, of the author who submitted stories for years before her novels were published or of the athlete who trained since childhood to win gold at the Olympics.
Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published. For every Olympic athlete, there are innumerable others who trained every day of their lives and never made the cut.
We all agree that doing the same things and expecting a different result is unwise. So why do we believe that persevering through failure after failure is a good idea? We consider quitting in the face of failure to be weak. We believe that perseverance is the key to success. Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion and drive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success.
Our society believes that anything is possible, as long as you “believe”. But not everyone can make it. Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do. Obviously, if you enjoy a pursuit, regardless of its outcome, you should continue. If you knew your novel would never be published, would you want to write? If you could never be a champion swimmer, would you still train? Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else.
Failure is not always the path to success. Sometimes, failure is the door to something new.
51. What do we know about the author’s old friend?
A He was dissatisfied with his acting performance.
B. He switched his dream of acting to something else.
C. He failed in acting because of a lack of persistence.
D. He failed in all attempts to become a successful actor.
52. The author mentioned JK Rowling mainly to ______.
A explain how she achieved success in writing
B. show that success doesn’t happen to everyone
C. prove that success favors those who are perseverant
D. encourage readers to pursue their dream until they succeed
53. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase in paragraph 4?
A. Held on to their dreams.
B. Met the required standard.
C. Improved their performances.
D. Promised to be good players.
54. What does the author advise us to do if we’ve failed many times?
A. Make an effort to try new things.
B. Stick to your goal until we succeed.
C. Wait for the right time and good luck.
D. Ask friends or family members for help.
55. Which of the following do you think is the best title for the passage?
A Stick to your dream--anything is possible
B. Perseverance: the secret to success
C. Flexibility vs. Perseverance
D. Perseverance-the only access to success?

We would all love to learn how to be happy. And sometimes, the solution comes from a surprising place.
During his fieldwork in a remote African village, an anthropologist (人类学家) had devoted himself to studying the unique habits and culture of the local tribe. He had been working in the village for quite some time and on the day before his scheduled return home, he composed a gift—a basket full of delightful fruits from the area, wrapped thoughtfully in a piece of cloth. He placed this offering beneath a tree and then gathered the village children around.
The man drew a line in the dirt, looked at the children, and said, “As soon as I signal to start, dash to the tree; the first to arrive will claim the basket of fruits.” However, when he signaled, instead of racing against each other, the children joined hands and ran together to the tree. Then They settled around the basket and enjoyed their treat as a group.
Bewildered by their act of unity, the anthropologist asked why they chose to run collectively when any one of them could have seized all the fruits. A young girl looked up at him and said innocently, “How can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”
Years later, Desmond Tutu, the well -known South African activist, remembered how a girl once thought about things in a simple yet deep way. He used the word “ubuntu” to describe her thinking. “Ubuntu” means “I exist because we all do.” In other words, we are who we are because of our relationships with others. For that tribe, to be human is to relate with and through others. They think that our happiness comes from the union of our joys and the meaningful impact they have on the community.

根据第一段“TikTok is setting a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.(TikTok为18岁以下的用户设置了每天60分钟的屏幕时间限制。这款视频应用由中国字节跳动公司所有,该公司表示,推出这一功能是为了鼓励青少年管理他们的屏幕时间。TikTok补充说,新的限制是在去年引入提示符之后出台的,这使得他们的屏幕时间工具的使用率增加了234%)”可知,在第一段中,TikTok引入了新的屏幕时间限制,以帮助青少年控制自己的使用。故选C。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Hitting the limit, users affected will receive a new passcode on the screen in their app to unlock extra time.(达到限制后,受影响的用户将在其应用程序的屏幕上收到一个新密码,以解锁额外的时间)”可知,当18岁以下的用户达到屏幕使用时间限制时,他们必须输入密码才能继续使用应用程序。
根据第三段““Since there’s no agreement on the ‘right’ amount of screen time, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” he said.(他说:“由于对屏幕时间的‘正确’量没有一致意见,我们咨询了目前的学术研究和波士顿儿童医院数字健康实验室的专家,选择了这个限制。”)” 故选A。
根据划线词上文“Critics of the video app welcomed the screen time limit”以及后文“when it comes to TikTok’s response to young users’ exposure to the platform”可知,这款视频应用的批评者对屏幕时间限制表示欢迎,但在TikTok对年轻用户接触该平台的反应方面,他们称这只是“保护青少年在TikTok上安全的行动不足”的其中一个问题。 故选A。
根据最后一段“Mr Ahmed said his centre’s research at the end of last year found that within minutes of opening a TikTok account, a 13-year-old girl user was receiving eating disorder and self-harm content in her feed. He called on the platform to focus its efforts not just on limiting screen time, but also to “clean up” feeds of harmful content to make it a “safe environment for children”.(艾哈迈德表示,他的中心去年年底的研究发现,一名13岁的女孩用户在开通TikTok账户的几分钟内,就收到了饮食失调和自我伤害的内容。他呼吁该平台不仅要集中精力限制屏幕时间,还要“清理”有害内容,使其成为“儿童的安全环境”)”可推知,TikTok很受欢迎,但对青少年来说不够安全。故选D。

A. He was dissatisfied with his acting performance.
B. He switched his dream of acting to something else.
C. He failed in acting because of a lack of persistence.
D. He failed in all attempts to become a successful actor.
52. The author mentioned JK Rowling mainly to ______.
A. explain how she achieved success in writing
B. show that success doesn’t happen to everyone
C. prove that success favors those who are perseverant
D encourage readers to pursue their dream until they succeed
A. Stick to your dream--anything is possible
B. Perseverance: the secret to success
C. Flexibility vs. Perseverance
D. Perseverance-the only access to success?
D 52. B 53. B 54. A 55. D

根据第四段中“Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published. (坚持会得到成功的回报,但这并不会回报每一个人。对于每一个JK Rowling来说,都有成千上万的有抱负的作家永远无法出版自己的作品。)”可知,作者提到JK Rowling主要是表明成功是不会发生在每个人身上的。故选B项。
【53题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. (坚持会得到成功的回报,但这并不会回报每一个人。)”以及“For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published. For every Olympic athlete, there are innumerable others who trained every day of their lives and never... ( 对于每一个JK Rowling来说,都有成千上万有抱负的作家永远不会出版。对于每一位奥运会运动员来说,还有无数其他人每天都在训练,但从来没有……)”可知,本段主要讲的是不是每个人都会成功,因此划线短语所在句子的意思是“虽然无数的奥林匹克运动员每天训练,但是却不成功”,也就是不一定会达到奥运标准,划线短语的意思是“符合要求的标准”。A. Held on to their dreams坚持他们的梦想;B. Met the required standard符合要求的标准;C. D. Promised to be good players承诺成为好球员。
根据倒数第二段中“Quitting when you’re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do. (当你没有领先的时候放弃有时候是最聪明的做法)”以及“Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else. (有时候,把你的精力放在其他事情上是明智的。)”可知,如果我们失败了很多次,作者建议我们努力尝试新事物。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是由文章倒数第二段中“Sometimes, it is wise to put your energy into something else. (有时候,把你的精力放在别的事情上是明智的。)”和最后一段“Failure is not always the path to success. Sometimes, failure is the door to something new. (失败并不总是通往成功的道路。有时候,失败是通往新事物的大门。)”可知,文章主要论述的是当屡试屡败的时候,选择放弃并转向其他事物也是明智的,即毅力并非是通往成功的唯一途径。D项“毅力——是通往成功的唯一途径吗?”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选D。

阅读下列短文并回答问题。
