By the end of this year, according to IVN Nature Education, an organization leading the country’s plan, there will be 200 such small forests in the Netherlands. In many other countries, communities are creating such small-area and native forests as positive responses to big environmental challenges. The forests can be any shape, but must be at least four meters wide based on IVN’s instructions. A tiny forest can be built under a year. And it generally includes between 20 and 40 different tree species. Since the first forest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the idea has become popular. Daan Bleichrodt launched IVN’s Tiny Forest plan with the goal of making it easier for children to know the significance of protecting environment. He thinks it is popular because people are becoming more and more aware of major environmental challenges. It’s a very practical way for people to do something positive considering climate change and loss of biodiversity. Data released by Wageningen University researchers in April shows that the forests hold a range of animal and plant species. Across the 11 tiny forests in a study, volunteers observed 636 animal species. They also recognized 298 plant species in addition to the original species planted in the areas. Daily maintenance of the forests sometimes involves obliterating unwanted weeds, but in general, new plant species, such as wildflowers, are allowed to grow, according to Bleichrodt. Suzanne Valkman, head of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Netherlands forests unit, said, “I was just amazed to see how many total species were recognized.” A WWF report in 2020 found that wildlife populations in the Netherlands decreased by half over the last three decades. Butterflies, birds and reptile species were particularly hard hit. Valkman said, “The Tiny Forest data shows that the small project can improve that biodiversity in cities.” 46. What is the feature of the Muziekplein forest? A. It has a small size. B. It includes only rare species. C. It has an interesting shape. D. It is beside a park lot. 47. What’s the purpose of creating tiny forests in the Dutch city? A. To make a great profit out of them. B. To raise the awareness of kids’ education. C. To set an example to other countries. D. To help improve the local environment. 48. What do we learn about IVN’s Tiny Forest plan? A. It was first talked about in 2015. B. It was put forward by Daan Bleicbrodt C. It is aiming at improving local pollution situation D. It is becoming increasingly welcome among people. 49. What does the underlined word “obliterating” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Checking. B. Protecting. C. Removing. D. Discovering. 50. Why did the author mention Suzanne Valkman’s words? A. Te describe the current situation of wildlife species. B. To show the effects of the Tiny Forest plan. C. To explain the importance of biodiversity. D. To encourage all of us to plant more trees. A 47. D 48. D 49. C 50. 根据第一段“Next to a tall building, the Muziekplein forest is one of seven such special and very small forests in the Dutch city of Utrecht, and 144 tiny forests across the Netherlands. It's about the size of a basketball court.(在一座高楼旁边,Muziekplein森林是荷兰乌得勒支市七个这样特殊和非常小的森林之一,在荷兰还有144个小森林。大概有一个篮球场那么大)”可知,Muziekplein森林的特点是尺寸很小。故选A。 根据第二段中“In many other countries, communities are creating such small-area and native forests as positive responses to big environmental challenges.(在许多其他国家,社区正在建造这样的小面积和原生森林,作为对重大环境挑战的积极回应)”可推知,在荷兰的城市里建造小森林的目的是帮助改善当地环境。 根据第三段“Since the first forest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the idea has become popular. Daan Bleichrodt launched IVN’s Tiny Forest plan with the goal of making it easier for children to know the significance of protecting environment. He thinks it is popular because people are becoming more and more aware of major environmental challenges.(自从2015年在荷兰种植了第一片森林以来,这个想法就开始流行起来。Daan Bleichrodt发起了IVN的小森林计划,目的是让孩子们更容易了解保护环境的重要性。他认为它之所以受欢迎,是因为人们越来越意识到重大的环境挑战)”可知,IVN的小森林计划越来越受到人们的欢迎。故选D。 【49题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“Daily maintenance of the forests sometimes involves(森林的日常维护有时需要……)”以及后文“unwanted weeds, but in general, new plant species, such as wildflowers, are allowed to grow(不需要的杂草,但一般来说,新的植物物种,如野花,是允许生长的)”可知,森林的日常维护有时包括去除不需要的杂草。 根据最后一段“Suzanne Valkman, head of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Netherlands forests unit, said, “I was just amazed to see how many total species were recognized.” A WWF report in 2020 found that wildlife populations in the Netherlands decreased by half over the last three decades. Butterflies, birds and reptile species were particularly hard hit. Valkman said, “The Tiny Forest data shows that the small project can improve that biodiversity in cities.”(世界自然基金会荷兰森林部门的负责人Suzanne Valkman说:“看到这么多物种被确认,我非常惊讶。”世界自然基金会2020年的一份报告发现,在过去30年里,荷兰的野生动物数量减少了一半。 蝴蝶、鸟类和爬行动物受到的打击尤其严重。Valkman说:“小森林的数据表明,这个小项目可以改善城市的生物多样性。”)”可推知,作者提到Suzanne Valkman的话是为了展示小森林计划的效果——改善了城市的物种多样性。故选B。 D It’s something that many of us realize: the sense that we’re not quite as sharp as we once were. As I wrote my recent book, A History of the Human Brain, which describes the evolutionary (进化的) tale of how our brain got here, I began to realize that so many of the same influences that once shaped our brain evolution are the very measures we use to keep our cognition (认知) functional today. Be social, and highly communicative. Explore creative achievements. Eat a varied diet. Be physically active. These behaviors help review our past, and play an important role in why we are still on the planet today: And they all were, at least in part, enabled by our brain. Human history is full of risks of extinction. Humans were never the fastest lot on the African plains, and far from the strongest. Tigers, leopards and lions held those honors. In our world, natural selection instead favored wisdom. Plenty of us became cat food, but those with a slight cognitive edge lived on. For us, smarts overcame strength and speed in enabling survival. Ecology, climate, and just luck would’ve played an important part in who lived or died as well, as they do for most living beings. But the evolutionary pressure for more complex mental abilities would lead to a great expansion in our brain’s size and neural circuitry Such an expansion is surely the major reason why we control the planet like no other species ever has. Much of this “success”, if you can call it that, was due to our social lives. Our close monkey and ape cousins are incredibly interactive (互动的), cleaning each other for hours a day to keep relationships. An active social life is now a known method for keeping our brain functional. Research shows that loneliness worsens cognitive decline (not to mention mental health, as many of us experienced this in the past year). Larger social networks and regular social activities are related to mental wellness and slowed dementia (an illness) process. 51. What did the author find when wring his book? A. Factors affecting our brain evolution support our cognitive functions. B. Humans live longer than other species because of varied diets. C. Humans are the most communicative species on earth. D. Our sense develops with our evolutionary process. 52. Why does the author mention some animals in Paragraph 4? A. To list their special features. B. To indicate their similarity to humans. C. To stress humans’ advantage over them. D. To show humans’ dangerous living environment. 53. Which of the following is the result of the evolutionary pressure? A. Smaller brains. B. Higher intelligence. C. Better sensing abilities. D. Greater physical strength. 54. What does the author mainly stress in the last two paragraphs? A. The reasons for our liking for social activities. B. The connection between monkeys and humans. C. The importance of social interaction. D. The direct result of being alone. 55. What can be the best title for the text? A. Social lives benefit humans’ mental health B. Humans survived from natural selection C. Developed brain makes humans today D. Humans’ senses change with time 【答案】51. A 52. C 53. B 54. C 55. 根据第二段“As I wrote my recent book, A History of the Human Brain, which describes the evolutionary (进化的) tale of how our brain got here, I began to realize that so many of the same influences that once shaped our brain evolution are the very measures we use to keep our cognition (认知) functional today.(当我写我的新书《人类大脑的历史》时,我开始意识到,许多曾经影响我们大脑进化的因素,正是我们今天用来保持认知功能的措施。这本书描述了我们的大脑是如何进化到现在的。)”可知,作者在写这本书时意识到,曾经塑造我们大脑进化的许多因素,正是我们如今用来保持认知功能的方法,即影响大脑进化的因素支持了当前的认知功能。故选A项。 根据第四段中“Human history is full of risks of extinction. Humans were never the fastest lot on the African plains, and far from the strongest. Tigers, leopards and lions held those honors. In our world, natural selection instead favored wisdom. Plenty of us became cat food, but those with a slight cognitive edge lived on. For us, smarts overcame strength and speed in enabling survival.(人类历史充满了灭绝的危险。 根据第五段中“But the evolutionary pressure for more complex mental abilities would lead to a great expansion in our brain’s size and neural circuitry (神经回路). Such an expansion is surely the major reason why we control the planet like no other species ever has.(但是,更复杂的心理能力的进化压力将导致我们大脑的大小和神经回路的巨大扩张。这种扩张无疑是我们控制地球的主要原因,而其他物种从未有过这样的控制。)”可知,对更复杂的心理能力的进化压力会导致我们大脑的大小和神经回路的极大扩展,这种扩展是我们能够控制地球的主要原因,也就是会带来更高的智力。故选B项。 【54题详解】 主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“Much of this “success”, if you can call it that, was due to our social lives. Our close monkey and ape cousins are incredibly interactive (互动的), cleaning each other for hours a day to keep relationships.(这种“成功”,如果你可以称之为成功的话,很大程度上要归功于我们的社交生活。我们的近亲猴子和类人猿有着令人难以置信的互动,每天互相清洁几个小时以保持关系。)”以及最后一段“An active social life is now a known method for keeping our brain functional. Research shows that loneliness worsens cognitive decline (not to mention mental health, as many of us experienced this in the past year). Larger social networks and regular social activities are related to mental wellness and slowed dementia (an illness) process.(活跃的社交生活现在是保持大脑功能的一种已知方法。 I'm no literary luddite I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full time job after I graduated college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me. Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag (which is exactly what I did on vacation). But I don't read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading. I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes — shaky ones when I've been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling — I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read. It's just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for. When I read paper books, I hold onto them for long periods of time. I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my “to be read” pile. Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul. Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle, by all means. But I'll be happy hoarding with my library. 56. Why did the author give his iPad to his brother? (no more than 10 words) 57 What is the second paragraph mainly about? (no more than 6 words) 58. Which word can take the place of the underlined word in paragraph 3? (1 word) 59. When the author has to give away some books, how does he feel about it? (no more than 15 words) 60. Do you like e-readers or physical books? Please explain your opinion. (no more than 25 words)(open) 【答案】56. Because he didn't like reading on the device . Because it couldn't give him the right reading experience . Because reading on the device couldn't help trace his life . Because it couldn't add personal depth and experience to stories . 57. The advantage of e-readers . Why the technology lovers choose e-readers. 58. Reading 59. He feels that he is giving away (a) part of his soul. He feels that he is parting with (a) part of his soul. He feels that it is like giving away/ paring with (a) part of his soul. 60. Possible answers: I like reading physical books, because they are like my companions and more meaningful to me. I like reading e-readers, because they are very convenient for me to lake them anywhere. 根据第一段的“But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.( 但经过两年偶尔在这个设备上的阅读以后,我把它交给了我哥哥。 对我来说这不是正确的阅读体验)”以及第三段的“I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions.(我可以用一直陪伴我的书来追踪我的生活。)”和“I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read.( 我能够增加一个额外的个人深度和经验到我即将重新阅读的故事中。)” Because he didn't like reading on the device ./Because it couldn't give him the right reading experience ./Because reading on the device couldn't help trace his life ./Because it couldn't add personal depth and experience to stories . 根据第二段的“Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag(科技爱好者选择电子阅读器而不是书籍,因为电子阅读器更方便。他们是对的。比起把五本书装在你的包里,客观上携带7盎司重的平板电脑更容易,成千上万本书触手可得)”可知,第二段主要讲述电子阅读器的优点,爱好科技的人为什么喜欢选择电子阅读器。故答案为The advantage of e-readers ./Why the technology lovers choose e-readers. 上文“I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read.( 我能够增加额外个人深度和体验到我即将重新阅读的故事中)”可知,重读已经读过的故事,作者增加了个人的认识深度,以及体验,因此推断作者不只是简单的读这个故事,即划线词词义为“阅读”,可以用reading代替。 根据倒数第二段的“Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul.(偶尔,我会经历一个决定捐赠哪些书的过程,但通常与一本书分开的想法就像赠送我灵魂的一部分)”可知,当作者必须捐赠一些书籍时,他感觉就像与自己的灵魂分离。 He feels that he is giving away (a) part of his soul./He feels that he is parting with (a) part of his soul./He feels that it is like giving away/ paring with (a) part of his soul. I like reading physical books, because they are like my companions and more meaningful to me./I like reading e-readers, because they are very convenient for me to lake them anywhere. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Carrie, I’m writing as I’m worried about your recent focus on appearance leading to a sharp decline in grades. To me, real beauty is a blend of inner qualities like kindness and intelligence. Outer looks are just a small part. It’s great to dress up, but studies should come first. B Keelyn Harper, a waitress from Georgia, was on her way home from her shift at Roosters Drive In last Thursday when she saw something burning on the side of Hwy, 213 near Mansfield. It was around 9:30 p. m. Instead of just calling 911 and continuing-heading home to see her-14-month-old daughter, Harper pulled over to see what was going on. “From far away it looked like someone had thrown something out in the bushes that caught on fire. I didn’t know it was a car until I stopped,” Harper told Fox News. By the time Harper got to the car, the front of the car was already in flames (火焰) and smoke had begun into the car. Although getting close to the fiery crash was dangerous, Harper feared that if she didn’t stop, nobody was going to. She pulled back the airbags which had been destroyed in the car to see if there was anyone inside. That’s when she found Ashley Strawn. She immediately jumped into action out of fear that Strawn was just going to die. “It was just the human instinct (本能) to help,” Harper said. Strawn’s whole body was lying over to the side and her legs were still caught underneath. There was a huge gash (伤口) on her leg where her bone was completely showing and she was bleeding really badly on her head. Harper ran to the passenger side, got Strawn’s arms and began to pull, knowing full well that the fire was getting progressively worse. “I was telling her, ‘the car was about to blow; we have to get out of here now’,” Harper said. With great effort, Harper pulled Strawn out of the car and held her in her arms until the ambulance arrived. Although Strawn is still recovering in the hospital, she sent Harper a big thank-you right from her hospital bed. “Thank you for saving my life,” Strawn said in a short video. 41. What was Keelyn Harper doing when she found the burning car? A. She was driving back home from work. B. She was picking her daughter up C. She was going out for dinner. D. She was visiting her friend. 42. Why did Keelyn Harper pull back the car’s airbags? A. To control the fire. B. To figure out the loss. C. To find if anyone had survived. D. To report the details to the police. 43. How was Ashley Strawn back then? A. She lost her mind. B. Her leg was badly hurt. C. She was burned seriously. D. Her arm was bleeding slightly. 44. What did Keelyn Harper do to save Ashley Strawn? A. She gave her first aid. B. She sent her to hospital. C. She ran to others for help. D. She got her out of the car. 45. What kind of person is Keelyn Harper? A. Brave and kind. B. Careful and clever C. Generous and friendly. D. Positive and confident. C Next to a tall building, the Muziekplein forest is one of seven such special and very small forests in the Dutch city of Utrecht, and 144 tiny forests across the Netherlands. It’s about the size of a basketball court. Before it was planted, the area was a parking lot. A It has a small size. D It’s something that many of us realize: the sense that we’re not quite as sharp as we once were. Our close monkey and ape cousins are incredibly interactive (互动), cleaning each other for hours a day to keep relationships. An active social life is now a known method for keeping our brain functional. Research shows that loneliness worsens cognitive decline (not to mention mental health, as many of us experienced this in the past year). Larger social networks and regular social activities are related to mental wellness and slowed dementia (an illness) process. 51 What did the author find when wring his book? C Better sensing abilities. D. Greater physical strength. 54. What does the author mainly stress in the last two paragraphs? A. The reasons for our liking for social activities. B. The connection between monkeys and humans. C The importance of social interaction. D. The direct result of being alone. 55. What can be the best title for the text? A. Social lives benefit humans’ mental health B. Humans survived from natural selection C. Developed brain makes humans today D. Humans’ senses change with time I'm no literary luddite I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full time job after I graduated college. (no more than 10 words) 57. What is the second paragraph mainly about? (no more than 6 words) 58.
