For most students, it’s the first time they’re living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life. Goal setting When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, re-member they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success. Interpersonal skills At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence. Studying With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule. Budgeting Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings…and the fun stuff(movies, dinners out), too. 31. Who is this passage most probably written for? A. College teachers. B. University graduates. C. High school teachers. D. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. "Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society," said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them." Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25,31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working — at any age — is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence — the underpinnings(基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work." 36. What do we know about John? A. He enjoyed his career and marriage. B. He had few childhood playmates. C. He received little love from his family. D. He was envied by others in his childhood. 37. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as . A. a description of personal values and social values B. an analysis of how work was related to competence C. an example for parents’ expectations of their children D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men 38. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by . A. recording the boys’ effort in school B. evaluating the men’s mental health C. comparing different sets of scores D. measuring the men’s problem solving ability 39. What does the underlined word "sharp" probably mean in Paragraph 4? A. Quick to react. B. Having a thin edge. C. Clear and definite. D. Sudden and rapid. 40. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Competent adults know more about love than work. B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life. C. Love brings more joy to people than work does. D. Independence is the key to one’s success. A 37. D 38. C 39. C 40. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier.,可知,他的工作满意度更高,婚姻更美满,身体也更健康。 故选A。 Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society可知,在家庭或社区工作的男孩获得足以过温饱生活的收入,并开始觉得自己是有价值的社会成员。 The researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores,可知,Vaillant的团队获得他们的发现是通过对比不同的得分。 Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid. One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how too love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work,可知,如果一个人懂得如何工作,懂得如何去爱,懂得为所爱的人工作,懂得爱自己的工作,那么他就能在这个世界上活得很精彩。 B。 C Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is. However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do ,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway. Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into. 41. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________. A. the reasons for success B. the meaning of success C. the standards of success D. the importance of success 42. In Paragraph 2,the underlined word that refers to ______. A. being good at something B. setting a practical goal C. putting in more time D. succeeding in life 43. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______. A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. one gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed 44. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. Successful people like to show their great skills. B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent. C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life. D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success. 45. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. One cannot succeed without time and practice. D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. A 42. B 43. D 44. B 45. 根据第一段“Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.”(有些人认为成功只属于那些有天赋或有良好家庭环境的人,而另一些人则认为成功主要取决于运气。 “However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. ”(然而,要在生活中取得成功,你必须要设定一个目标,然后逐步将它变得更加实际。除此之外,要变得更加擅长某事,必须花费至少10,000个小时进行学习和实践。)可知,除此之外,指的是前面的设定实际的目标。此外,也可以从结构上找到答案,出现两次的needs. 属于原词重现。故选B。 【43题详解】 细节理解题。根据“To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.”(要精通某些事情,甚至需要更多的时间,而大多数人不会投入这些时间。) 以及第三段的“This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. ”(这就是为什么许多成功人士建议你去做你喜欢的事情的一个重要原因。)可知答案的关键是this。而this 指代的内容刚好是与时间(To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.) 根据第四段“It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.” 通过but之后的内容“thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.” D项可以根据第四段最后一句的does you no good排除。 通过文章最后一段主题句“Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. ”(无论你做什么,如果你想在这方面做得很好,你需要日复一日地工作,几乎到上瘾的程度,而且要持续很长一段时间)以及文章多次提到要花费时间和精力可知正确选项为C。ABD项都是以偏概全。属于原词重现。故选C。 四、阅读表达(共计5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 My dad is a kind, gentle man, and a man of few words. Throughout my life, he offered advice rarely. But the words were always appropriate to the situation I was facing. As a teen when I struggled with making sense of the world around me, he said, “All things are relative.” He taught me the right view of the world. When I was offered the opportunity to be a manager of an organization as an undergraduate student, I asked him for advice because he was a senior manager of a large company. His advice was simple, “Only when you become the manager can you have a vision for how you can make the organization better; management isn’t about power and it’s about leadership.” I learned what I needed was not only to be responsible for my team but also to have leading ability. When I was feeling down, he explained, “Think that you make the wrong choices in life, sometimes.” My dad is 86 now, living on his own and enjoying life while struggling with the challenges that aging brings. He keeps a positive attitude despite long pain and the losses that come in life. Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone, and he shares the joys of my young family. As I tell him how we’re heading off cycling or on a trip or out to play tennis, now his typical response is, “Do it while you can.” This is very important. We can’t be sure of the future. My father’s advice is like the ancient dictum(格言)of “ carpe diem”— seize the day and enjoy it to the fullest. My dad rarely “lectured me”. He trusted me, and helped me when I needed help. His patience and wisdom have been true gifts in my life. As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”. It’s enough to “just get me started”. 46. Why did the author’s dad tell him “All things are relative.”? (No more than 10 words) 47. What qualities should a manager have according to the author? (No more than 5 words) 48. What is the purpose of the author’s father talking with him on the phone every day? (No more than 10 words) 49. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (No more than 10 words) 50. How do you feel about the ancient dictum of “carpe diem”? (No more than 20 words) 【答案】46. To teach the author the right view of the world. 47. Both responsibility and leading ability. 48. Learning (To learn) more about the pleasure of the author’s family. 49. His father’s words make him take action. 50. Open.(Answers may vary) (One possible version: ) I totally agree with it, because I think one should seize the day to enjoy his life without regret. As a teen when I struggled with making sense of the world around me, he said, “All things are relative.” He taught me the right view of the world. To teach the author the right view of the world. I learned what I needed was not only to be responsible for my team but also to have leading ability. Both responsibility and leading ability. Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone, and he shares the joys of my young family. Learning (To learn) more about the pleasure of the author’s family. As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”. His father’s words make him take action. I totally agree with it, because I think one should seize the day to enjoy his life without regret.(我完全同意,因为我认为一个人应该抓住这一天,享受他的生活没有遗憾) 五、书面表达。 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Daniel, I’m really sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious and inferior because of your appearance. I can understand how you feel, but please don’t worry too much. In my opinion, appearance is not the most important thing. What really matters is the inner beauty. People who are kind, friendly and helpful are always the most attractive. A good personality can make a person shine and be loved by others. Moreover, everyone has their own unique charm. It’s not necessary to compare ourselves with others in terms of appearance. In my eyes, true beauty is a combination of inner qualities and a positive attitude towards life. It’s about being confident and comfortable with who we are. I believe that as long as you focus on developing your inner self and being true to yourself, you will find your own beauty and be happy with it. 。 词汇积累 焦虑的:anxious→worried 在我看来:in my opinion → in my view/as far as I am concerned 吸引人的:attractive→charming/ fascinating 专注于,关注:focus on→ focus your attention on 2. A good personality can make a person shine and be loved by others. What makes a person shine and be loved by others is his good personality. 1】What really matters is the inner beauty.(运用了what引导的主语从句) 【高分句型2】People who are kind, friendly and helpful are always the most attractive.(运用了who引导的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 天津市微山路中学高二下学期3月份阶段检测英语学科试卷 一、单选选择(共计15小题,每小题1分,满分15分) 1. —I think our headmaster should be invited to the party. —______. B University graduates. C. High school teachers. D. Would-be college students. 32. What is the author’s suggestion for reaching a huge goal? A. Divide it into smaller, more achievable ones. B. Reward oneself for each goal one has set. C. Purchase a clear, updated roadmap. D. Push oneself to an upper level. 33. One of the suggested ways to enhance your interpersonal skills is to ________. A. prepare complicated questions B. try on someone else’s shoes C. listen to others carefully D. take advantage of others 34. What is the key to successful college study according to the author? A. Being well-organized. B. Being well-informed. C. Effective reading skills. D. Reliable research methods. 35. To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is________. A. save money for financial investment B. estimate one’s income and expenses C. set aside money for fun activities D. open a personal bank account B When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. C Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. one gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed 44 What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. Successful people like to show their great skills. B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent. C People need to achieve success at the cost of life. D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success. 45. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. One cannot succeed without time and practice. D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. My dad is a kind, gentle man, and a man of few words.
