Do you want to get your creative juices flowing? Film-maker and writer Wanuri Kahiu and sci-fi author Charlie Jane Anders recommend this list to you to motivate your imagination
Perfectly Parvin by Olivia Abtahi
This novel is a romantic comedy about identity and belonging. It’s a debut from Olivia Abtahi, a writer and film-maker from Washington D. C. It is about misadventures of a 14-year-old heroine. You’ll experience nothing but pleasure.
Perfectly Parvin is fresh, charming and a joy to read. Author Olivia Abtahi does an excellent job “introducing” Parvin’s Iranian culture without it feeling like an introduction. Seeing the life of an American teenager through a different lens (视角), particularly this one, is illuminating and heartfelt.
The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin
This is a sci-fi novel, which is incredibly clear and from deep feeling. It can be read as a mirror to present-day challenges.
Along with her portrayal of New York, Jemisin has created characters that are every bit as brash, smart, and culturally diverse as the city itself for this adventure.
Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki
Charlie Jane calls this read “a beautiful story of friendship and love”. This hopeful sci-fi novel tells the story of a runaway and unique violinist.
Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
Wanuri suggests the classic Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. The book can help you find your voice, identify your purpose and better understand yourself to grow as an artist and a human.
21. Who is the author of a romantic comedy?
A. N. K. Jemisin. B. Ryka Aoki. C. Rainer Maria Rilke. D. Olivia Abtahi.
22. Which book can reflect present challenges?
A. Light from Uncommon Stars. B. The City We Became.
C. Letters to a Young Poet. D. Perfectly Parvin.
23. What is Light from Uncommon Stars mainly about?
A. Adventure and misfortune. B. Friendship and love.
C. Science and opportunity. D. Art and culture.

Wang Zhenhua, 88, from Wuhan, Hubei Province, suffers from some diseases. He uses a wheelchair and struggles to stand up, but remains independent. “I can walk by myself. I don’t need anyone’s help,” he said. In reality, even a short walk can leave him breathless and tired. But he doesn’t want his family to spend too much time and energy caring for him, nor does he want to pay the high cost of hiring a caregiver.
“The Wang family’s situation will become more common as China’s population ages and drives reassessment (重新评估) of how healthcare and eldercare are delivered,” experts said. The number of elderly people in China, those aged 60 and above, soared to 297 million, or about 21.1 percent of the population in 2023, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
“In the past, China’s approach to elderly care has been mainly family-centered,” said Winnie Yip, a professor at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. “In China, 90 percent of individuals prefer to receive care at home, 7 percent choose community-based care, and a mere 3 percent turn to hospitals.”
Yin Shushan, a scholar at the Institute of Population Research of Peking University, said the traditional Chinese model of family care, once the cornerstone of elderly support, is under stress. “The rapid pace of modern life, coupled with economic pressures, has weakened the ability of younger generations to provide the same level of care, leading to an obvious tension between tradition and contemporary realities,” Yin said.
In the future, hugong, or professional caregivers, will play a greater role, which will require better standards and training. “It’s also a matter of human resources, as the qualifications and training programs for caregivers are still being established,” Yin said.
24. What’s the author’s purpose by mentioning Wang Zhenhua in paragraph 1?
A. To praise independence of seniors. B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To show sympathy to the old. D. To care about Wang’s health.
25. What does the underlined word “soared” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Exposed. B. Responded. C. Rose. D. Occurred.
26. What did Yin Shushan say about traditional Chinese model of family care?
A. It faces challenges from reality. B. It remains little changed.
C. It gets young people’s support. D. It strengthens family’s connection.
27. What might the author continue talking about?
A. The role and training of professional caregivers.
B. The economic pressure young people overcome.
C. The training programs young adults accept.
D. The hard life the old people are faced with.
C
Donating your old, unwanted clothes is a great way to give back to your community while cleaning out your closet. But those clothes don’t always go to those who need them — or to anyone at all. Believe it or not, a large part of the clothing you donate ends up in landfills
If you’re donating your clothes or taking them to a consignment shop (寄售商店), often the clothing won’t be accepted due to certain problems. And in the case of consignment shops, if the clothing is no longer in style, then there’s little to no resale value.
There’s also the issue of the gap between the amount of clothes that are donated and the amount of used clothes that are actually purchased. About 28 percent of people donate used clothing, but a mere 7 percent of people purchase used clothing, according to Savers 2018 State of Reuse Report.
With that kind of math, it’s not so surprising that landfills — and not other people’s closets — become the final destination for the clothes. All the clothing in landfills just translates to more waste that pollutes the environment; this is true whether the fibers are natural or artificial.
It would be unrealistic to expect fashion cycles to slow down anytime soon. More and more clothes will be manufactured; they’ll continue to be purchased, and in many cases they will one day be thrown away. And while more people may jump on the second-hand clothes activity, it seems unrealistic to think this will become a worldwide trend.
This is not to say that all is hopeless. There are plenty of textile (纺织品) recycling services out there. There’s American Textile Recycling Service, which provides recycling bins for various textiles all throughout the country. New York City is home to FABSCRAP, which is an organization that helps recycle and repurpose textile waste left over by fashion designers, costume designers and tailors. And of course, you can always search for a local textile recycling service in your area.
28. Which is a finding of Savers 2018 State of Reuse Report?
A. There is an increasing need of used clothing.
B. Donating used clothing has become a major trend.
C. Modern people spend too much money on clothing.
D. The supply of used clothing is much bigger than the need.
29. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 5?
A. Fashion cycle moves too fast. B. It’s vital to study fashion trend.
C People should buy fewer clothes. D. Donating old clothes is impractical.
30. What does the author advise us to do with unwanted clothes?
A. Recycle them. B. Exchange them.
C. Give them away. D. Share them with neighbors.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Is Clothing Recycling Practical? B. Are You Ready to Buy Used Clothes?
C. Why Should We Donate Used Clothes? D. Will Used Clothes End up in the Right Place?
D
Whale songs are impressively beautiful to listen to. While many believe whales only sing to attract a mate, there is a lot more communication in whale songs. However, the exact purpose is not yet known. Now, two different projects are hoping to solve this mystery.
One project that is being conducted by Humans and Algorithms Listening to Orcas (虎鲸) (HALLO) is studying a family of orcas named the Southern Residents. The goal of the orca project is to be able to recognize members of the Southern Residents family group by their songs, and track them in real time. Knowing where the whales are could help keep this endangered family alive. The waters they travel are along the routes of major international shipping lines. If the presence of the orca s is noted, ships could be told to quiet their engines and slow down, avoiding crashes.
Another project, Project CETI (the Cetacean Translation Initiative), is studying sperm whales (抹香鲸) off the coast of Dominica in the Caribbean. CETI attempts to go even further. The goal, according to the researchers, is to not only track and organize sperm whale calls, but to decode (破译) them as well, and create what would be a dictionary of sperm whale language.
Though the projects are studying two different types of whales and have slightly different goals, they are both using similar methods. Both are using artificial intelligence to help them figure out patterns in the various noises the whales they are studying are making. This, in turn, could help them categorize and show them.
Both HALLO and CETI are excellent examples of how innovative technology can be used to help humans better understand and appreciate the natural world around them.
32. What can be inferred about the orcas?
A. They live in an inaccessible area. B. Their waters are heavily polluted.
C. They can be recognized by shape. D. They are likely to meet with accidents.
33. What does Project CETI expect to do?
A. Protect the oceans. B. Tell different whales.
C. Explain sperm whale calls. D. Communicate with whales.
34. What do the two studies have in common?
A. Subjects. B. Goals. C. Approaches. D. Locations.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the projects?
A. Favorable. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Opposed.

A summer storm brought heavy rainfall without warning in Missouri. The sky turned an ominous (不祥的) shade of gray as thick clouds gathered rapidly. Lightning flashed across the horizon, followed by the deafening roar of thunder. Wind blew hard through trees, bending branches and sweeping away leaves. Despite the chaos, there was a strange beauty in the storm’s raw power. Six inches of rain caused floodwaters to pour into the streams, causing them to burst their banks. The rainfall quickly flooded parts of the city. As the storm passed, the air grew still, leaving behind a fresh landscape.
Two boys 15-year-old Dominic Viet and 16-year-old Joseph Diener, escaped the water rise by riding their bikes to higher ground. They were heading home during the storm when they suddenly heard a young woman’s scream for help. They searched the area, trying to locate the woman. To their shock, they spotted her holding onto a basketball hoop in a nearby court, which had become submerged (淹没) in 6-to 7-foot-deep floodwater. The helpless woman was struggling to keep her head out of the water.
The boys noticed the young woman earlier in the day as she swam in the area with a friend. Hours later, deep floodwaters from the nearby stream pulled her into the engulfed (吞没的) basketball court. She was quickly trapped in high floodwaters and trying to stay floating.
Watching the basketball court transformed into what looked more like a muddy pond, the boys stopped their bikes. They could see the woman sinking more down every second. Her head was barely above the water. “We must get her out as soon as possible,” Dominic said. As some people standing by dialed 911, the boys knew there was no time to waste.

Gu Kaizhi is regarded as one of the pioneers of traditional Chinese painting, and his paintings represented the painting style of the period. Gu Kaizhi loved painting particular persons. The characters in his paintings were famous because he caught the spirit, as well as the look, of his subjects. Wang Wei, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, did a lot of landscape paintings. And he painted the inner spirit of landscape. Hui-tsung was actually the last emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty. He loved painting flowers and birds. His paintings were very colorful. Unfortunately, he spent too much time painting and not enough time ruling his country. Gao Kegong painted landscape because he loved nature. He did a lot of his paintings in ink. All the works of these Chinese painters are very, very old and very valuable. Now, let’s look at some Chinese painters whose works are not so old.

A
Do you want to get your creative juices flowing? Film-maker and writer Wanuri Kahiu and sci-fi author Charlie Jane Anders recommend this list to you to motivate your imagination.

【答案】24 B 25. C 26. A 27. A
根据第一段“Wang Zhenhua, 88, from Wuhan, Hubei Province, suffers from some diseases. He uses a wheelchair and struggles to stand up, but remains independent. “I can walk by myself. I don’t need anyone’s help,” he said. In reality, even a short walk can leave him breathless and tired. But he doesn’t want his family to spend too much time and energy caring for him, nor does he want to pay the high cost of hiring a caregiver.(88岁的王振华来自湖北武汉,患有一些疾病。他使用轮椅,挣扎着站起来,但仍然独立。“我可以自己走。我不需要任何人的帮助,”他说。事实上,即使是一小段散步也会让他喘不过气来,感到疲惫。但他不想让家人花太多时间和精力照顾他,也不想支付高昂的费用请保姆)”可知,本段讲述了王振华老人的情况,他虽行动不便但不想给家人增添负担也不愿请护工。以及第二段中““The Wang family’s situation will become more common as China’s population ages and drives reassessment (重新评估) of how healthcare and eldercare are delivered,” experts said.(专家表示:“随着中国人口老龄化,并促使人们重新评估医疗和养老服务的提供方式,王家的情况将变得更加普遍。”)”
根据第二段划线单词句中“The number of elderly people in China, those aged 60 and above, soared to 297 million, or about 21.1 percent of the population in 2023, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.(根据国家统计局的数据,到2023年,中国60岁及以上的老年人数量……至2.97亿,约占人口的21.1%)”可知,这里是在说中国60岁及以上老年人的数量达到了2.97亿,占2023年人口的约 21.1%,结合语境,数量是在上升的。“soared”意思是“上升,激增”,与C选项“Rose”(上升)意思相符。故选C项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Yin Shushan, a scholar at the Institute of Population Research of Peking University, said the traditional Chinese model of family care, once the cornerstone of elderly support, is under stress. “The rapid pace of modern life, coupled with economic pressures, has weakened the ability of younger generations to provide the same level of care, leading to an obvious tension between tradition and contemporary realities,” Yin said.(北京大学人口研究所的学者Yin Shushan表示,中国传统的家庭养老模式,曾经是老年人养老的基石,现在正面临压力。“现代生活的快节奏,加上经济压力,削弱了年轻一代提供同样水平的照顾的能力,导致传统与当代现实之间的明显紧张,”Yin说)” 可知,Yin Shushan认为中国传统的家庭护理模式曾经是养老的基石,但现在现代生活的快节奏和经济压力削弱了年轻一代提供同样水平护理的能力,即传统家庭护理模式面临着来自现实的挑战。故选A项。
根据最后一段“In the future, hugong, or professional caregivers, will play a greater role, which will require better standards and training. “It’s also a matter of human resources, as the qualifications and training programs for caregivers are still being established,” Yin said.(未来,专业护理人员将发挥更大的作用,这将需要更好的标准和培训。Yin说:“这也是人力资源的问题,因为护理人员的资格和培训计划仍在建立中。”)”可知,未来将发挥更大作用的专业护理人员需要更好的标准和培训,而目前护理人员的资格和培训项目仍在建立中。由此可推测,作者接下来可能会继续谈论专业护理人员的角色和培训。故选A项。
C. People should buy fewer clothes.
D 29. D 30. A 31. D
根据第三段“There’s also the issue of the gap between the amount of clothes that are donated and the amount of used clothes that are actually purchased. About 28 percent of people donate used clothing, but a mere 7 percent of people purchase used clothing, according to Savers 2018 State of Reuse Report.”( 还有一个问题是,捐赠的衣服数量与实际购买的旧衣服数量之间存在差距。
根据第五段“It would be unrealistic to expect fashion cycles to slow down anytime soon. More and more clothes will be manufactured; they’ll continue to be purchased, and in many cases they will one day be thrown away. And while more people may jump on the second-hand clothes activity, it seems unrealistic to think this will become a worldwide trend.”(期待时尚周期在短期内放缓是不现实的。
根据最后一段“This is not to say that all is hopeless. There are plenty of textile (纺织品 ) recycling services out there.”( 这并不是说一切都没有希望。 故选A项。
根据第一段中“Believe it or not, a large part of the clothing you donate ends up in landfills (废弃物填埋场).”(信不信由你,你捐赠的大部分衣服最终都被填埋了。)
A. Favorable. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Opposed.
D 33. C 34. C 35. A

Two boys, 15-year-old Dominic Viet and 16-year-old Joseph Diener, escaped the water rise by riding their bikes to higher ground.

At that critical moment, some emergency workers and lifeguards arrived.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Without thinking about the risks, they quickly jumped into the water. The boys quickly swam out to the woman. The water was still rising rapidly. In the water were floating objects. They struggled to swim, trying to avoid dangerous things. Eventually, they managed to reach the woman. They each grabbed one of her shoulders and held her up. Holding tightly onto the woman, they desperately swam with her to the safety of dry ground. Suddenly, some rapid currents tried to pull them down and the three were almost submerged in currents.
At that critical moment, some emergency workers and lifeguards arrived. Without hesitation, they approached the three and carried them out of the water. People standing around also gave necessary assistance. The two boys were exhausted, out of breath. And the young woman was in danger. Immediately, the emergency workers performed first aid on the young woman and rushed her to the hospital. People present were impressed with the two boys’ brave actions. They said, “What they did is really amazing. They saved a life that day.” With a smile, a boy said, “We did it because it was the right thing to do.”
