The Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal competition asks the UK students one question: “If you were an engineer, what would you do?” And 12-year-old Rebecca Young had her answer right away. The young Scottish student wanted to help members of her community facing homelessness.
Young entered the Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal competition as one of 70,000 engineering designs and won the Commendation Medal, an award determined by public vote. She also won a silver medal in the main competition. Young invented a solar-powered heated blanket with the goal of helping unhoused people keep warm.
Young started by researching sleeping bags and backpacks, curious as to how they could be designed to offer even more warmth. Of course, heated blankets do exist, though they must be plugged (插入) into power supply to function to their full potential — a luxury homeless individuals often do not have.
With assistance from an engineering firm, Young presented a prototype (模型) for the heated blanket. The design is integrated into a backpack and powered by the sun, allowing for easy on-the-go use. While simplistic in application, Young’s design is thorough.
Using the average human sleep time of eight hours as a required run time, she conducted in-depth research on the most suitable batteries and solar panels to use in the prototype. The invention also includes a control circuit that automatically alternates the blanket between on-and-off states based on temperature readings to conserve battery life. The blanket itself is also designed similarly to a sleeping bag to allow for heat retention and to keep users warm amid any shifts or movements. The outer frame of the blanket’s backpack also offers more storage space to the user.
While created with the intention to support people sleeping on the streets, Young also said the design could be applicable for camping, hiking, or traveling.
“It felt amazing to see my drawing turn into something real. I never thought that could happen. Homelessness is a big problem that needs fixing, and if you see a homeless person, help in any way you can,” Young said.
4. What motivated Young to enter the competition?
A. To win a medal. B. To keep homeless people warm.
C. To improve her engineering skills. D. To design a new type of sleeping bags.
5. Why did Young’s blanket need to be solar-powered?
A. To be more portable.
B. To be cheaper to use.
C. To be used without access to power supply.
D. To be environmentally friendly.
6. What enables the heated blanket to automatically keep battery life?
A. Its solar panel. B. Its storage space.
C. Its unique shape. D. Its control circuit.
7. What can we say about Young’s heated blanket?
A. Portable and practical. B. Cheap but complicated.
C. Simple and Ineffective. D. Eco-friendly but expensive.
B 5. C 6. D 7. A

Encouraging bilingualism (双语能力) at home can have many cognitive benefits, which may be particularly helpful to kids with autism spectrum disorder (孤独症谱系障碍) or ASD, new research from the University of Miami’s College of Arts and Sciences indicates.
A team of researchers led by Celia Romero, a graduate student in clinical psychology, explored the role of bilingualism in 112 children, including typically developing children and children with autism, between the ages of 7 to 12 years old. Overall, they found that children who spoke two or more languages often had stronger executive (执行的) functioning skills. This means they are able to control impulses (冲动) and to switch between different tasks more easily than children who only spoke one language.
The results are significant because executive functioning skills are a key challenge for children on the spectrum but are important for all kids to thrive in school and later in the workplace. Yet, the team found the benefits of speaking more than one language were not limited to children with autism.
The study also looked at the impact of multilingualism on core symptoms of autism, including perspective taking, restricted and repetitive behaviors and social communication.
“We also found that multilingual children have enhanced perspective taking skills, or the ability to understand someone else’s thoughts or point of view,” Romero said.
An idea called joint activation from the field of neuroscience can help explain the results. Prior research suggests that the bilingual brain has two languages constantly active and competing. As a result, the daily experience of shifting between these languages is associated with enhanced executive control. This concept is also known as the “bilingual advantage”, according to the researchers.
“If you have to juggle two languages, you have to suppress one in order to use the other. That’s the idea that inhibition — or the ability to stop yourself from doing something — might be enhanced by knowing two languages,” said another researcher.
8. What benefit does bilingualism bring to children with ASD?
A. Social skill enhancement. B. Academic performance boost.
C. Cognitive ability improvement. D. Language learning acceleration.
9. What can we say about executive functioning skills?
A. They contribute to better leadership skills.
B. They affect children’s future work life.
C. They determine children’s language level.
D. They enhance children’s physical abilities.
10. What may happen when speaking two languages?
A. Learning delay. B. Language confusion.
C. Delayed multitasking. D. Brain language competition.
11. What does the underlined word “juggle” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Employ. B. Switch. C. Adapt. D. Explore.
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

McGill University researchers have discovered that changes in clouds are slightly relieving global warming. While greenhouse gases continue to cause temperatures to rise, a reduction in low-cloud cover over land has brought about a modest reduction of the amount of heat being trapped close to ground level.
“We started this research to observationally confirm the increase of greenhouse effect of the Earth atmosphere,” said Yi Huang, associate professor in McGill University’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. “We indeed confirm that, although to our surprise we also found an offsetting (抵消的) effect due to changes in clouds.”
“Without these cloud changes, the surface would warm even faster,” said Lei Liu, graduate student in McGill University’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the first author of this study. “This work offers observational truth about how clouds affect warming, which can be used to improve climate models and guide environmental policies,” Liu added.
To discover this surprising effect, the team used the measurements of a key radiative instrument, the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI), along with satellite data, climate models and a technique called “optimal spectral fingerprinting” co-designed by Yi Huang and Lei Liu to isolate the effects of clouds from other atmospheric processes.
The researchers focused on longwave radiation, the heat energy the Earth emits back into the atmosphere. Usually, clouds trap some of this heat and send it back to the ground. But as the climate warms, there are fewer low clouds in some areas, which means less heat is returned to the surface.
The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences of the university looks to continue using their critical data for understanding regional climate dynamics and enhancing climate modelling.
“Our research emphasizes the value of precise, long-term climate observations,” said John Gyakum, a professor. “This is essential for understanding the Earth’s response to global warming and making informed decisions for future generations.”
The researchers cautioned that their discovery does not throw doubt on global warming. “It’s like having a heater that adjusts itself a little,” the researchers explained. “But even with this adjustment, the room is still heating up.”
12. What does the reduction in low-cloud cover over land lead to?
A. An increase in global warming. B. A significant rise in temperature.
C. A slight decrease of ground-level heat. D. A complete stop in the greenhouse effect.
13. According to Lei Liu, what can their findings apply to?
A. Improving cloud coverage globally. B. Lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
C. Forecasting short-term weather patterns. D. Improving climate prediction models.
14. Why did the researchers mention the heater?
A. To caution the public. B. To prove their discovery useful but little.
C. To praise their findings. D. To emphasize its importance.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Role of Clouds in Relieving Global Warming
B. The Importance of Long-term Climate Observations
C. The Impact of Greenhouse Gases on Global Warming
D. The Accuracy of Climate Models in Predicting Warming
C 13. D 14. B 15. A

As the nights draw in, our energy levels will dip, but the demands placed upon us probably won’t. Here’s how to avoid burnout.
Tick off (给……画上钩) the basics
____16____Other activities, such as journaling, reading and yoga have been shown to lower cortisol (皮质醇) levels. Even a walk in the woods can help. Studies show that people who regularly go for walks in a forest or in green spaces have lower levels of cortisol.
____17____
The tiger is not outside the cave any more, but we think it is. Modern stresses such as deadlines lead to the same “fight or flight” response as the tiger. Learning to introduce small stresses and practise such as exposure to cold water helps us contextualise the threat and build tolerance. Mindful breathing also helps. It regulates the nervous system.
Set boundaries and stick to them
Good fences make good neighbors.____18____When we define what we need to feel secure and healthy and protect those parts of ourselves, we can do wonders for our well-being. Boundaries may include the hours you work, how much screen time you have, or when you go to bed.
Avoid workplaces where burnout is normalised
The latest State of the Global Workforce report suggests that 40% of the UK employees are stressed.____19____Watch out for red flags in the recruitment process. Poor communication, ghosting, endless rounds of interviews, repetitive questions and untrained interviewers are bad signs.
Shape your definition of success
Success is a slippery concept. For some, it’s about having meaningful relationships and fulfilling experiences; for others, it’s tied to career wins and financial gains. Defining what success means to you is a first step towards establishing priorities in life, enabling a focus of energy on the things that matter to you.____20____
A. Challenge your definition, too.
B. Introduce healthy stress to your life.
C. Try to avoid any stress that harms you.
D. It’s also important to set boundaries with yourself.
E. But how do we avoid going from one tiring job to another?
F. So what can we do to leave a workplace that makes us tired?
G. Getting enough sleep, eating well and exercising properly are the foundations of good health.

“open to sb.” 故填to。
“each ____ approximately three months” 是独立主格结构,“each” 与 “last” 之间是主动关系,即 “每次(展览)持续……”,所以用现在分词。
故填a。
此处引导非限制性定语从句,先行词是 “an Emperor Qianlong-period replica of the helmet used by Nurhaci”,指物,关系词在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词 “which” 引导该从句。故填which。
此句是一个倒装句,陈述客观事实,为一般现在时,正常语序为 “A saber-like knife from Isfahan and a saber-like knife from Torghut ____ among them”,句子的主语是 “A saber-like knife from Isfahan and a saber-like knife from Torghut”,是复数,所以谓语动词用复数形式 “are”。故填are。
故填to learn。

During the holiday, Lily went to stay with her grandmother in the countryside. Her grandmother’s house was a simple cottage with a small yard, where an old cow named Daisy lived. Daisy was gentle and always seemed to understand when Lily talked to her. Lily loved visiting her grandmother, but she had never taken care of the animals alone before.
One morning, Lily found her grandmother lying in bed, looking pale. “Grandma, what’s wrong?” Lily asked, her voice filled with worry.
“I’m not feeling well, dear,” her grandmother replied softly. “I think I need to rest today. Can you take care of Daisy for me?”
Lily nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. “Don’t worry, Grandma. I’ll look after her.”
Lily went outside to the yard. The morning was bright and sunny, but the air was cool. She found Daisy standing by the fence and looking at her with soft, trusting eyes. “Hey, Daisy,” Lily said, patting the cow’s head gently. “I’ll take care of you today.”
Lily brought Daisy some fresh hay and watched as the cow ate it slowly. She felt a sense of pride as Daisy seemed to enjoy the food. But as the morning turned into afternoon, the sky suddenly darkened. A storm was coming.
The wind picked up, and the first drops of rain began to fall. Lily could see Daisy starting to look anxious. She knew cows could get scared during storms. “It’s okay, Daisy,” Lily said, trying to sound calm. “Let me get you inside.”
She led Daisy into the barn (畜棚), but the cow kept mooing (哞哞叫) nervously. Lily’s heart raced. She had no idea how to calm Daisy down. She tried patting her, but Daisy just kept mooing louder. Lily felt helpless. She had never been in this situation before.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, Lily remembered something her grandmother had told her once. Sometimes, animals just need a gentle touch and a calm presence. Lily took a deep breath to calm herself down and walked up to Daisy. She gently placed her hand on Daisy’s soft, warm fur and began to touch her gently. “It’s okay, Daisy,” she whispered softly. “I’m here with you. You’re safe.” At that moment, Lily felt a stronger bond with Daisy.
Daisy’s mooing gradually softened, and she began to relax under Lily’s gentle touch. She even took a few steps closer to Lily, as if seeking more comfort. Lily continued to touch her, consumed with indescribable pride and fulfillment as the storm raged outside. Eventually the storm ceased and the sun started to peek through the clouds, soaking the world in a serene and peaceful glow. It was at that time that Lily realized that conquering difficulties and being brave through attempts brought a great sense of achievement. Lily looked at Daisy, who was now calm and content, and said with a radiant smile, “We made it through the storm.”

Houghton Festival
This intimate woodland party is one of the UK’s most praiseworthy new festivals, and it’s easy to see why. Everything you hear at Houghton is broadcast through the finest sound-systems, selected by Craig Richards, who organizes the event.

As a result the daily experience of shifting between these languages is associated with enhanced executive control.

C A slight decrease of ground-level heat.

Set boundaries and stick to them
Good fences make good neighbors.____18____When we define what we need to feel secure and healthy and protect those parts of ourselves we can do wonders for our well-being.
