18. Who is the talk probably intended for?
A. Animal activists. B. Zoo visitors. C. Zoo keepers.
19. Why are night animals hard to be observed?
A. Because they are sleeping during the day.
B. Because they are not allowed to be watched.
C. Because they are uncomfortable with daylight.
20. What is the function of red light in the system?
A. To create natural daylight.
B. To enable visitors to watch.
C. To put night animals to sleep.
B 19. A 20. B
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the City Zoo’s newest show, World of Darkness. Here is a new world of night animals to you. Not too many years ago, zoo visitors were unable to watch the behavior of night animals because these animals were active during the night and generally slept during the day when the zoo was open to visitors. But in the 1960s, zookeepers at the Bronx Zoo in New York City found a way to settle this problem and developed the system that we now use in our show. The animals’ living places are lit with white light at night. Then the animals think the white light is daylight, so of course they go to sleep. During the day, their living places are lit with red light, which makes the animals think it is at night, so that they will be active. On the other hand, the red light enables visitors to watch these animals going about their normal activities at night. So, just enjoy your visit to the World of Darkness and enjoy watching these amazing animals of the night. And remember, next month is the opening of World Down Under, a new show of Australian animals. Are you looking forward to learning about Australian animals in person? Well, you are lucky. Just please come and join us for that event.

Arbeia Roman Fort (城堡) and Museum
Location and History
Arbeia Roman Fort is situated on Hadrian’s Wall. It was the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain, and now it has been a World Heritage (遗产) Site. Built around AD 160, Arbeia Roman Fort was the military supply base for the soldiers who were stationed along Hadrian’s Wall. The fort has been gradually uncovered and some original parts have been revealed. There are reconstructions that show how Arbeia Roman Fort would have looked.
The Reconstructions
The reconstructions of the Commanding Officer’s house and soldiers’ quarters are strikingly different. The accommodation for soldiers is dark and uncomfortable, while the Commanding Officer’s house is spacious and luxurious, with courtyards with fountains for him and his family to enjoy.
The Museum
Visit the museum and see many objects that were found at Arbeia. They are historically important and show what daily life was really like at that time. You will see weapons, tools, jewellery, and so on. You can also discover how the Romans buried their dead and see tombstones (墓碑) which survive to this day. There is a “hands-on” area allowing visitors to dig on a certain site and study their findings with the help of museum staff. You can piece together pottery (陶器), or try writing just as the Romans would have done. For children, they can build this ancient Roman fort with building blocks by themselves.

When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock, and shielding soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work.
I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I created a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities.
In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium.
Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die.
24. How did the author use to improve the soil?
A. By adding rich soil. B. By covering it with bags.
C. By removing the weeds. D. By applying chemical fertilizer.
25. What does the underlined word “shielding” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring.
26. What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A. To explain the process of transplanting. B. To illustrate the prevention of insect attacks.
C. To stress the competition of different species. D. To state the formation of multi-species communities.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild
C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers
A 25. C 26. D 27. A
根据文章第一段“In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.(以前,在那些小得多的花园里,我会用从苗圃买来的几袋优质土壤来改良土壤)”可知,作者过去是通过添加优质土壤来改善土壤的,也就是添加肥沃的土壤。故选A项。
根据划线词上文“Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock(现代农业的两个核心原则可以指导这一转变:尽量减少土壤扰动和强调生物多样性。在实践中,轮流种植作物;优先使用有机肥料而非化肥;将农作物、树木以及家畜进行整合)”和划线词后面“…soil from being washed away with cover crops (用覆盖作物来……土壤被冲走)”可知,这里说的是一些现代农业的原则及实践方法,提到用覆盖作物来防止土壤被冲走,划线词在此处应是“保护、防护”的意思,与“Sheltering”意思相近。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium.(五月的时候,我决定移栽一株开花植物。
根据文章第二段“The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. (摆在我面前的挑战是重振土壤)”和最后一段“Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right.(我用手指穿过土壤,比以往任何时候都更清楚地意识到,我改变的不仅仅是我的院子——它完全改变了我对土壤的看法。它不仅仅是作为生命的媒介,而且本身就是一个有生命的实体)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者打理花园改造土壤的过程,通过实践对土壤有了新的认识,认为土壤不仅仅是生命的介质,它本身就是一个有生命的个体,强调了土壤的重要性及独特“生命力”,因此,A选项“土壤的灵魂”作为标题最为合适,能够概括文章的主旨。故选A项。
C
Zero-emission (排放) large passenger aircraft powered by hydrogen (氢) will be technically available in five years, according to Airbus, but they will not enter service for at least a decade as the price of the fuel needs to come down.
The prediction comes from Glenn Llewellyn, vice-president of zero-emission technology at the European plane-maker. He said that while Airbus planned to demonstrate hydrogen-powered aircraft in 2025, over the next 10 years, hydrogen won’t be more economic than the fossil fuel. “To make real emissions free hydrogen-powered planes, which give out only water and heat, their fuel needs to come from hydrogen produced via renewable sources such as wind and solar,” he added. “Another barrier is building up the ecosystem that hydrogen aircraft will need.”
However, Mr. Llewellyn predicted that there was enough interest to make this happen. In an interview, Mr. Llewellyn said, “We already see massive increases in the amount of renewable energy being produced across the world. Wind energy production has multiplied by two over the last five years and solar energy production has multiplied by four.” He added, “There are a number of independent institutes that have mapped out how hydrogen costs can come down over the next decades. We see a 30% reduction in renewable hydrogen costs in 2030 compared to where it is today, and a 50% reduction in renewable hydrogen costs by 2050. They are exactly the kind of cost figures that are interesting for us, because it makes zero-emission aircraft commercially viable (可行的) in the 2030s.”
Last month UK-based ZeroAvia conducted the world’s first flight of a commercial-grade aircraft powered by hydrogen. A few days before, Airbus announced a series of design proposals for hydrogen-driven aircraft, including a “blended wing” concept that provides greater storage capacity. This design could be key to hydrogen-powered aircraft as the fuel is less energy dense (密度大) than conventional fuel and so requires more space to match performance of existing airplanes.
28. What does Paragraph 2 focus on?
A. The future to make hydrogen-powered aircraft.
B. The importance of making hydrogen-powered aircraft.
C. The problems with making hydrogen-powered aircraft.
D. The possibility of making hydrogen-powered aircraft.
29. What does the underlined word “capacity” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Space.
B. Ability.
C. Place.
D. Capability
30. What is Mr. Llewellyn’s attitude towards the future of Zero-emission large aircraft?
A. Cautious.
B. Negative.
C. Doubtful.
D. Positive.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Zero-emission aircraft’s first flight was tested.
B. Zero-emission large aircraft will be available.
C. Zero-emission large aircraft has been mass produced.
D. The production of Zero-emission large aircraft encountered barriers.
C 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据第二段“He said that while Airbus planned to demonstrate hydrogen-powered aircraft in 2025, over the next 10 years, hydrogen won’t be more economic than the fossil fuel. “To make real emissions free hydrogen-powered planes, which give out only water and heat, their fuel needs to come from hydrogen produced via renewable sources such as wind and solar,” he added. “Another barrier is building up the ecosystem that hydrogen aircraft will need.”(他说,尽管空中客车公司计划在2025年展示氢动力飞机,但在未来10年,氢不会比化石燃料更经济。他补充说:“要制造真正的无排放的氢动力飞机,这种飞机只释放水和热,它们的燃料需要来自风能和太阳能等可再生资源产生的氢。“另一个障碍是建立氢飞机所需的生态系统。”)”可知,无排放的氢动力飞机的燃料成本高,建立氢动力飞机的生态系统也是个问题。由此可知,第二段重点讲制造氢动力飞机的问题。故选C项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“A few days before, Airbus announced a series of design proposals for hydrogen-driven aircraft, including a “blended wing” concept that provides greater storage capacity. This design could be key to hydrogen-powered aircraft as the fuel is less energy dense than conventional fuel and so requires more space to match performance of existing airplanes.(几天前,空中客车公司宣布了一系列氢驱动飞机的设计方案,包括提供更大存储capacity的“混合机翼”概念。这种设计可能是氢动力飞机的关键,因为这种燃料的能量密度比传统燃料低,因此需要更多的空间来匹配现有飞机的性能) ”可知,空中客车公司提出了“混合机翼”计划,后句对该设计的原因进行解释,因为这种燃料的能量密度比传统燃料低,因此需要更多的空间来匹配现有飞机的性能,而“blended wing”设计可以提供更大的储存空间。由此推知“capacity”意为空间,与space同义。故选A项。
根据第三段“However, Mr. Llewellyn predicted that there was enough interest in the sector to make this happen. In an interview, Mr. Llewellyn said, “We already see massive increases in the amount of renewable energy being produced across the world. (然而,卢埃林预计,人们对该行业的兴趣足够大,足以实现这一目标。卢埃林在接受采访时表示:“我们已经看到,全球可再生能源产量大幅增加。”)”以及“They are exactly the kind of cost figures that are interesting for us, because it makes zero-emission aircraft commercially viable (可行的) in the 2030s.(这正是我们感兴趣的成本数字,因为这使得零排放飞机在本世纪30年代具有商业可行性。)”可知,Mr. Llewellyn认为全球可再生能源产量大幅增加,飞机的燃料成本降低,使得零排放飞机在本世纪30年代具有商业可行性。由此推知,Mr Llewellyn对未来的零排放大型飞机的态度是积极乐观的。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段首句“Zero-emission large passenger aircraft powered by hydrogen will be technically available in five years, according to Airbus, but they will not enter service for at least a decade as the price of the fuel needs to come down.(根据空中客车公司的说法,零排放氢动力大型客机技术上将在五年内投入使用, 但由于燃料价格需要下降,它们至少在10年内不会投入使用)”;第三段“However, Mr. Llewellyn predicted that there was enough interest in the sector to make this happen.(然而,卢埃林预计,人们对该行业的兴趣足够大,足以实现这一目标)”以及最后一段“Last month UK-based ZeroAvia conducted the world’s first flight of a commercial-grade aircraft powered by hydrogen. (上个月,总部位于英国的ZeroAvia完成了全球首架氢动力商业级飞机的飞行)”可知,文章主要讲述了尽管面临一些困难,但零排放的大型飞机有望在将来成为现实。故选B项。
D
When you picture a farm, do you think of green fields and a big red barn? The farms of the future may look very different from that. That’s because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won’t have to be above ground. In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty abandoned space. It was unused for almost 70 years before it was turned into the world’s first underground farm.
Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽的) farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other indoor spaces.
Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic technology that grows plants in water but not soil. In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technology allows for the perfect pest-free (无害虫的) growing environment.
These methods save 70 percent less water than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept within a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by weather or growing seasons.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens, as their sugars and starches develop differently under different light spectrums (光谱).”
Right now, the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast enough to be economically (经济地) feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technologies improve, you’ll see soft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said.
The company’s goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within four hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants and people who live in London, but they hope to be entering the local retail markets soon.
32. What makes the underground farm possible?
A. The perfect environment. B. The great demand for fruits.
C. The hydroponic technology. D. The good weather condition.
33. What is the function of the LED lighting system?
A. To get rid of pests. B. To make use of solar energy.
C. To allow greens to grow rapidly. D. To provide various light spectrums.
34. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Difficult. B. Common. C. Impossible. D. Achievable.
35. What does the company expect of the underground farm?
A. It’ll benefit more customers. B. It’ll be environment-friendly.
C. It’ll keep food fresher for longer. D. It’ll introduce more advanced technologies.
C 33. D 34. D 35. A

根据第一段中“In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty abandoned space. It was unused for almost 70 years before it was turned into the world’s first underground farm.(在伦敦,在街道下方100英尺处,有一块巨大的废弃空地。在被闲置了近70年后,它变成世界上第一个地下农场)”和第二段中“Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽的) farm. (Richard Ballard和Steven Dring是Growing Underground公司的创始人,他们认为这里是建造水培农场的理想地点)”可知,Growing Underground公司将一块废弃地下空地改建成了地下农场,结合第三段中的“Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic technology that grows plants in water but not soil.(Growing Underground的农场成立于2015年,使用水培技术种植微型蔬菜和沙拉叶,这种技术在水中而不是土壤中种植植物)”可知,Growing Underground公司使用的是水培技术,由此推知,正是水培技术使得地下农场成为可能。
根据第五段中的“Already, LEDs allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens,as their sugars and starches develop differently under different light spectrums.(LED已经允许种植者改变绿色蔬菜的味道,因为它们的糖和淀粉在不同的光谱下会产生不同的变化)”可推知,LED照明系统为地下农场提供了多样化的光谱,让糖分和淀粉在不同的光谱下发生不同的变化,从而改变绿色蔬菜的味道。

根据画线词前的“the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast enough... (该公司只出售绿叶蔬菜,因为它们是唯一生长速度足够快的作物)”可知,该公司目前仅销售带叶的绿色蔬菜,这是因为它们长得足够快,再结合常识和副词“economically”可推知,销售长得快的蔬菜是为了实现经济上的可行性。划线词feasible与achievable意思相近,指“可实现的,可行性”。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“They currently sell to local restaurants and people who live in London, but they hope to be entering the local retail markets soon.(他们目前的客户是当地的餐馆和住在伦敦的人,但他们希望很快能进入当地的零售市场)”可推知,公司希望他们的地下农场能够惠及更多客户。故选A项。

上文“Century-old trees tower above, sunlight twinkling through them. Birds tweet.(百年老树高耸入云,阳光透过树叶闪烁。鸟儿啾啾叫)”描述的是走进森林后的景象,空处继续描述森林中的景象,E选项“The scent of fallen leaves and ancient soil fills the air.(落叶和古老土壤的气味弥漫在空气中)”符合语境,承接上文,继续描述森林中的景象,共同营造出森林的氛围,符合语境中对森林的描述。故选E。
【37题详解】
下文“But if you live far away from one or don’t have the means to get there, any place that has a lot of trees and quiet spaces will do.(但如果你住得离森林很远,或者没有条件去那里,任何有很多树和安静空间的地方都可以)”中的But表示转折,说明空处内容与下文形成转折关系,D选项“The ideal place to forest bathe is, well, in a forest.(沐浴森林的理想之地,当然是在森林里)”指出沐浴森林的理想之地是森林,而下文则说如果无法去森林,有其他选择,形成转折关系,符合语境。故选D。
上文“To gain the ultimate rewards of forest bathing, plan to spend two to six hours in the woods, says Qing Li, a researcher on forest bathing.(为了获得森林浴的最终益处,计划在树林里待上两到六个小时,森林浴研究者Qing Li说)”说明要在森林里待上足够的时间才能获得益处,G选项“His research showed forest bathing for that amount of time helped boost immunity.(他的研究表明,在那段时间里进行森林浴有助于提高免疫力)”中“His research”指代Qing Li的研究,“that amount of time”指上文的“two to six hours”,承接上文,进一步说明Qing Li的研究结果,符合语境。故选G。
下文“Your forest bathing session is not the time to squeeze (挤) in your hard exercise. Instead, it is about calming down your nervous system and reducing your heart rate and blood pressure.(你的森林浴时间不是挤时间进行剧烈运动的时候。相反,它是关于平静你的神经系统,降低你的心率和血压)”说明森林浴时不是进行剧烈运动的时候,而是要平静神经系统,降低心率,所以该段主要讲的是森林浴要注重降低心率,A选项“Aim to reduce heart rate.(目标是降低心率)”符合该段主旨,可作为小标题,引出下文关于降低心率和血压的内容。故选A。
上文“Many of the benefits of forest bathing come when we breathe in the chemicals that trees release into the air, called phytoncides. They can reduce our stress hormones and increase our levels of white-blood cells known as natural killer cells. What if you can’t make it to a forest?(森林浴的许多益处源于我们吸入树木释放到空气中的被称为植物杀菌素的化学物质。这些化学物质可以减少我们体内的应激激素,并增加被称为自然杀伤细胞的白细胞数量。要是你无法前往森林怎么办呢?)”提到森林浴的很多益处来自于吸入树木释放到空气中的化学物质,即植物杀菌素,然后提出一个问题,即如果不能去森林怎么办,F选项“Dr. Li says you could try spreading tree-based essential oils at home.(李博士说,你可以试着在家里涂抹以树为基础的精油)”承接上文,回答了上文的问题,给出了去不了森林时的替代方法,与上文衔接合理。

In Grade 9 I joined boxing classes. My friend Lea and I were the only girls in the class.
We got to throw our first punches (拳击) and learned how we should stand. I still didn’t know how to do it well, but I felt that choosing the boxing class was a right decision. Mr. Vernon, our boxing teacher, made us work hard and sweat. The boxing pads (防护垫) were my favorite, but my punches weren’t strong enough.
After participating in more practices, we had learned how to punch in six different ways. The boys were improving a lot on their strength, and Lea with her speed. What about me? Well, I had a hard time seeing the difference. Mr. Vernon would always tell me that practice would make me stronger, and this was what helped motivate me to continue.
Each practice there was at least one boy who would make fun of me and say, “Oh, you’re too short to box. Mr. Vernon has to bend down when you are on the boxing pads; oh, you’re not strong enough; you punch like a mouse.”
I know those comments were not to hurt me, but just to have fun. It’s true. I’m a small and short person and I did lack confidence; but hearing those comments can either bring you down, or make you feel motivated to show them they are wrong. In my case, they started to discourage me. I didn’t have the strength to think they were wrong, and part of me thought that they were speaking the truth. I hid it inside my heart because I thought that showing I was doubting myself would make it worse.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Then came one particular practice.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The experience taught me a great lesson.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Then came one particular practice. Somehow I was mad and angry, which made my punches suddenly stronger and faster. What amazed me was that gradually I just didn’t have that anger in me. After the practice, all my classmates burst into cheers for my great performance and Mr. Vernon also said that I was making great progress. With his praise I finally found the strength I needed. In the following practices, he was impressed with my good boxing skills, because they were getting powerful.
The experience taught me a great lesson. Boxing requires a lot of work and effort, but it has also taught me not to feel discouraged about what others say. Thanks to boxing, I have gradually realized that being short doesn’t define me. If we focus on our strong points and improve our weak ones, there is no reason for us to feel disappointed. Day by day I am becoming increasingly confident, definitely sure nothing will limit me to doing what tall or strong people can do.

A. Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring.

A. To explain the process of transplanting. B. To illustrate the prevention of insect attacks.
C. To stress the competition of different species. D. To state the formation of multi-species communities.
27 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild
C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers

C To allow greens to grow rapidly.
